June, 2015 [email protected]
Hi gang, Field day is behind us but why have I not seen any photos on “LL” like the past years. No one has sent KAR any photos.
My son Kevin NØFNL is not active except FD Saturday all night at the CW station of the Johnson County AR Club. He got his Novice license when he was14. He taught himself the code and a year later was copying 40WPM in his head. He has been with AT&T for 33 years and net work computers in big business and colleges.

u Orlan please add me to your mailing listAlan [email protected] 73
Glad to have U aboard Alan.
u just thought I would pass this along as a reminder to my ham friends....... How old is your coax? I had one run that had some RG-8 "foam" coax that was supposedly pretty good stuff that was 9 or 10 years old. I decided I had better check it out, so this weekend I tested it. Short story: I had one piece that was only 42 ft. long. I measured the RF power going into it (on a Diawa 401) and the power coming out the other end then converted the power ratio to db.... YEOW !! That “short" 42 ft. piece had a 2.44db LOSS at 14.26 Mhz! To wit: "Terrible!" By contrast, a 100 ft. length of 8 year old LMR-400 still met mfr's spec.at 0.5 db loss per 100 ft. at 14 Mhz. Just thought I would pass this along...... clearly....worth your time to check out "old" coax periodically, especiallyif it is in a VHF or UHF application! 73,
Jon Pollack, [email protected]_______________________________________________To post a message to all the list members, send email directly to <[email protected]>
u Additional info: WHEN COAX HAS BEEN DETERMINED TO BE TO OLD TO USE.... Remember that the outer braid is a great source for use as grounding around the shack.. Removing the outer protective cover CAREFULLY to expose the outer shield, remove the center conductor and you have grounding braid.... REMEMBER TO GROUND EQUIPMENT PROPERLY AT YOUR FIELD DAY SITE ALSO!73

Practically ‘ANY' CB microphone will work, with exception of 'cheepie' units that have the electret elements. Will just require wiring the 5 pin plug on the cord, OR finding a mic from a early Cobra 148 or Grant SSB units which have the 5 pin plug. (probably require rewiring) 73,

OK,
Convention time again!
The Kansas Division ARRL Convention is in Salina Sunday August 16th, sponsored by The Central Kansas Amateur Radio Club (CKARC).
We will again this year have a "before Convention" dinner, Saturday evening.(Aug 15th) A number indicated last year theyenjoyed the gathering we had and indicated another one would be in order. This is NOT sponsored by CKARC, but, they are aware of it.
Several will be in town Saturday evening, as well as 'locals', so......
I will need an RSVP if you are interested in attending the dinner this year.
Please respond via eMail, or phone. The venue again will be , 'Martinelli's' Located at 158 S Santa Fe. We will begin at 6:30PM CT so plan on arriving around 6:15 or so.. Feel free to spread the word. I will need to have a total head count at least a week before, August 8th, or sooner. YL's, XYL's, family invited.

u Click here: New Tab (Original Astatic D-104 Golden Eagle microphone cut-sheet) This applies to the Golden AND Silver Eagle microphones, first issued in 1976 (to commemorate the USA's Bicentennial Year). Golden Eagle mics came with a serial-numbered plate on the bottom of the G-stand. Oh, and contrary to popular MISbelief, the mics were amplified ONLY to provide a Hi-Z impedence to newer rigs, but of course those "children band" folks decided that Maximum Modulation was the way to go... u https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Vintage_Heathkit_Transistor_Portable_Broadcaster_Walkie-Talkie,_Model_SK-10,_Circa_1960s_(12843550413).jpg Back in late 1959, I had one of these. It was a 1-transistor modulated-oscillator that "transmitted" on the AM radio band ("you can talk through ANY AM radio, kids"). It used a crystal earphone for the microphone, and the PTT switch eventually ended up in our closet, as part of a buzzer system... see, when anybody UPSTAIRS, wanted to talk to anybody DOWNSTAIRS in the basement, you'd push the button, it'd ring a bell, and you'd communicate through the dirty-clothes chute. I still have a friend in Olathe, KS who lived at the end of the block.. he was the neighborhood hoodlum. One time, another of my neighbors went over to see him, and while he kept Chuck occupied, I hid near his basement window and zeroed in on the station he had on.. Roger (the other neighbor kid) told Chuck that if you adjusted the radio "just so", you could hear the Overland Park PD on it, and as Chuck was well known to the OPPD, he was eager to be "in on the scoop"... I lowered my voice and spoke into a tin-can that I'd held next to the "broadcaster", so my voice was different, and issued an arrest warrant for him... Roger said Chuck got airborne out the back door, and hid in the woods behind our houses, until nightfall. I found him a couple of years ago, andfinally 'fessed up to him about it - he STILL remembered it, and we got quite a laugh. Later, another friend bought one, and using our little transistor radios as "receivers", we had 2 way comms.. on TWO DIFFERENT FREQUENCIES, too. Half-Duplex we'd call it today. Ahhhh, them was the daze... [sic] Tomu For L's list...
Each year, we celebrate the birthdate of our country, the beautiful United States of America. ...and... each year many STILL insists on referring to it as "the 4th. of July". Let's all strike a blow for the country and call it by it's REAL name, because "the 4th. of July" is just another DATE on the calendar, but INDEPENDENCE DAY; well...
that's something special.
Tell your friends.
73 & Happy Birthday, USA.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Back in late 1959, I had one of these. It was a 1-transistor modulated-oscillator that "transmitted" on the AM radio band ("you can talk through ANY AM radio, kids"). It used a crystal earphone for the microphone, and the PTT switch eventually ended up in our closet, as part of a buzzer system... see, when anybody UPSTAIRS, wanted to talk to anybody DOWNSTAIRS, you'd push the button, it'd ring a bell, and you'd communicate through the dirty-clothes chute. I still have a friend in Olathe, KS who lived at the end of the block.. he was the neighborhood hoodlum. One time, another of my neighbors went over to see him, and while he kept Chuck occupied, I hid near his basement window and zeroed in on the station he had on.. Roger (the other neighbor kid) told Chuck that if you adjusted the radio "just so", you could hear the Overland Park PD on it, and as Chuck was well known to the OPPD, he was eager to be "in on the scoop"... I lowered my voice and spoke into a tin-can that I'd held next to the "broadcaster", so my voice was different, and issued an arrest warrant for him... Roger said Chuck got airborne out the back door, and hid in the woods behind our houses, until nightfall. I found him a couple of years ago, andfinally 'fessed up to him about it - he STILL remembered it, and we got quite a laugh. Later, another friend bought one, and using our little transistor radios as "receivers", we had 2 way comms.. on TWO DIFFERENT FREQUENCIES, too. Half-Duplex we'd call it today. Ahhhh, them was the daze... [sic] Tom Dailey, W0EAJ ~~~ [email protected]
