The Chiefs are coming off a loss in their most recent contest at Carolina (10/5), but return to Arrowhead where the club has compiled a 10-3 (.769) record in October games going back to 2002. Tennessee registered a hard-fought 13-10 win at Baltimore (10/5). The Titans are off to their best start in franchise history at 5-0. Tennessee and the N.Y. Giants (4-0) are the NFL’s only two remaining undefeated clubs. The Titans are propelled by a staunch defense that leads the league in both turnover differential (+6) and scoring defense (11.2 ppg). QB Kerry Collins has also performed admirably for the Titans and has guided the club to victory in each of his four starts in 2008, including last week’s comeback vs. the Ravens. This contest could signal the return of QB Brodie Croyle to the Kansas City lineup. Croyle, who was injured on Opening Day at New England (9/7), would be seeking KC’s second home win of the season. Dating back to Tennessee’s 26-17 win at Arrowhead (12/16/07), the Titans have won eight straight regular season contests, the longest active winning streak in the league and the club’s longest since winning eight straight in 2000. The franchise’s last nine-game winning stretch came in ’93 when the Houston Oilers went on a franchise-best 11-game run. However, that streak was halted in an AFC Divisional Playoff Game vs. Kansas City (1/16/94). Dating back to ’95, the Chiefs have haulted an opponent’s winning streak of three or more games on 13 different occasions at Arrowhead. Kansas City’s most recent streak-stopping effort came in the club’s last home contest which resulted in a 33-19 victory vs. Denver (9/28). Kansas City broke a string of four straight losses against Houston with a thrilling 24-19 win in a ’93 AFC Divisional Playoff tilt, the fi nal NFL postseason contest ever staged at the Astrodome (1/16/94). Herm Edwards was named the 10th head coach in Kansas City history on January 9, 2006. The fi rst coach in franchise history to guide the Chiefs to the playoffs in his initial season, he helped the 2006 Chiefs become just the fi fth team since 2000 to overcome an 0-2 start and still make the postseason. Edwards guided the N.Y. Jets to three postseason berths during a fi ve-year stint (2001-

05) with that franchise. He originally joined the Chiefs as a recipient of the NFL’s Minority Coaching Fellowship in ’89. He later served as a scout (’90-91, ’95) and also coached defensive backs (’92-94). Born in Fort Monmouth, NJ on April 27, 1954, Edwards served as Tampa Bay’s assistant head coach/DBs coach under Tony Dungy from ’96-00. Edwards concluded his college career as a DB at San Diego State in ’76 and signed as a rookie free agent with Philadelphia (’77-85). In 135 career starts with the Eagles, he established a franchise record with 38 INTs, and started in Super Bowl XV. Edwards concluded his NFL playing career seeing duty in seven games for the Rams and Falcons in ’86. He then coached DBs at San Jose State (’87-89) prior to his arrival in the NFL ranks with Kansas City in ’90.

YOUTH WILL BE SERVED

Jeff Fisher was named the 15th head coach in Titans history on January 5, 1995 after serving on an interim basis for six games in ’94 after originally joining the club as defensive coordinator. He holds the franchise record with 120 regular season wins and he has led the Titans to fi ve playoff appearances. He guided the Titans to back-to-back 13-3 regular season records in ’99 and 2000, including a berth in Super Bowl XXXIV. Fisher also led the Titans to a berth in the 2002 AFC title game. Born in Culver City, California on February 25, 1958, Fisher began his NFL coaching career as defensive backs coach under head coach Buddy Ryan for Philadelphia from ’86-87. He served as Eagles defensive coordinator from ’88-90 and held the same post for the L.A. Rams in ’91. He spent two years (’92-93) coaching DBs for San Francisco before joining the Titans in ’94. A seventh-round draft choice of Chicago in ’81, Fisher spent fi ve seasons (’81-85) as a defensive back for the Bears, fi nishing his playing career with fi ve INTs and 120 punt returns for 1,125 yards and one TD. He played four seasons (’77-80) at Southern California playing under John Robinson and was a member of the Trojans ’78 National Championship squad.

KC’s roster has undergone a tremendous transformation this off-season. The Chiefs have 27 players on the 53-man roster or a reserve list (27 of 55 - 49.1%) who originally entered the NFL as Chiefs draftees. Twenty-two of those 55 have been selected over the past three years. Incredibly, 60.4% of the players on Kansas City’s 53-man roster (32 of 53) have three years of NFL experience or less, including 15 rookies (28.3%), the most rookies on any NFL Opening Day roster. The Chiefs started six of those rookies on Opening Day, the highest tally by the club since the AFL-NFL merger. Based on research compiled by Mike Sando of ESPN.com, the Chiefs boasted the NFL’s youngest Opening Day starting lineup in the NFL at 25.18 years old. Based on Opening Day 53-man rosters provided by the NFL, the Chiefs and Packers owned the NFL’s youngest rosters at 25.57 years old. In terms of average experience, no team had a lower average experience than Kansas City at 3.45 years. Kansas City also boasted the distinction of fi elding an NFL-high 17 rookies or fi rst-year players on its Opening Day roster, a fi gure that included a league-high 15 rookies.

Chiefs nine-time Pro Bowl TE Tony Gonzalez ranks fi rst in NFL history among tight ends in receptions (841), receiving yards (10,075) and TD receptions (68+). He bypassed Shannon Sharpe (10,060) at Carolina (10/5) to take over the all-time yardage mark. Gonzalez’s 68 total TDs with the Chiefs trail only RB Priest Holmes (83) in KC annals. Gonzalez ranks second in franchise history with 10,098 combined net yards. In addition, no tight end in NFL history owns more consecutive 60-catch campaigns (nine) than Gonzalez. Gonzalez owns 23 career 100-yard receiving games, the most in Chiefs history. Those 23 100-yard games are second in NFL history among TEs, trailing only Kellen Winslow (24). Gonzalez extended his team-record streak of games with at least one reception to 120 contests at Carolina (10/5). Only Ozzie Newsome (150) has a longer streak by a TE in NFL history.

The Chiefs employed three different starting QBs in the fi rst three games of 2008, a fi rst in Chiefs history. In fact, it’s just the fi fth time the Chiefs have ever started three different QBs over the course of an entire regular season. The Chiefs are just the fourth team since the AFL-NFL merger to start three different QBs in the fi rst three games of the year in a non-strike season. Herm Edwards has made four playoff appearances since 2001 (only Tony Dungy - 7 and Bill Belichick - 6 own more). Since QB Vinny Testaverde started all 16 games for Edwards and the playoff-bound N.Y. Jets in 2001, Edwards has never enjoyed another season where a single QB opened all 16 games.

The whole idea of the American Football League seemed so far-fetched, the original eight owners were whimsically dubbed “The Foolish Club.” Lamar Hunt founded the league with his Dallas Texans franchise and reached out to Bud Adams, who became the second member of “The Foolish Club” when he agreed to form the Houston Oilers. An enduring sense of partnership and friendship bonded Hunt and Adams over the decades. Their two franchises squared off in the second-longest game in pro football history, the ’62 AFL Championship Game, a 20-17 double-OT thriller that was the fi rst of Hunt’s three AFL titles with the Texans/Chiefs. Today’s NFL landscape is undoubtedly better because of the contributions of these two pro football patriarchs.

Staying with a frustrating pattern, second-half ineffectiveness doomed the Chiefs to a 26-17 loss to the Titans in the Arrowhead Stadium season finale. A promising start that saw Kansas City mount a 14-10 halftime lead dissolved after intermission as Tennessee racked up the game’s final 13 points. QB Vince Young connected with WR Roydell Williams for a 16-yard touchdown on the game’s opening drive, but the Chiefs defense tightened after that forcing punts on the Titans next two tries. Kansas City’s offense would get going in the second quarter as RB Kolby Smith and QB Brodie Croyle heated up. Smith pounded out 24 yards to move the Chiefs inside the Titans 30-yard line. Croyle then hit WR Eddie Kennison on a 17-yard pass before finding WR Samie Parker for a 10-yard touchdown to tie the game at 7-7. Tennessee would tack on a K Rob Bironas field goal thanks to a muffed punt return by Chiefs WR Eddie Drummond at the KC 21-yard line. The Titans 10-7 lead wouldn’t hold up long as Kansas City answered with a 14-play scoring drive. The Chiefs mixed up the play calling to march down to the Tennessee 33-yard line. Croyle then found WR Dwayne Bowe for a 14-yard gain on fourth-and-seven to keep the drive alive. After another first down pass to Bowe, Croyle threw his second touchdown pass of the day, this time a nine-yard pass to TE Kris Wilson, who carried two would-be tacklers into the end zone with him. The Chiefs would take that 14-10 lead into halftime. The Titans opened the second half by forcing a punt and knocking in a 37-yard field goal on the ensuing possession. A 35-yard pass from Young to Roydell Williams was the big play on the drive. KC would answer with a field goal of its own to move the Chiefs lead back to 17-13. Croyle would complete passes to five different receivers to overcome three holding penalties on the 14-play, 59-yard drive. Croyle’s third-down pass fell incomplete from the Tennessee 17-yard line, forcing a 36-yard field goal from K John Carney. Tennessee would take back the lead moments later. A kickoff out of bounds set the Titans up at the 40-yard line. It took Young just three plays to find the end zone as he hit Williams down the sideline for a 41-yard touchdown pass to put the Titans ahead 20-17 late in the third quarter. Rookie S Michael Griffin picked off Croyle on the next play from scrimmage giving the Titans golden field position at the Chiefs 30-yard line. Kansas City dodged a bullet however as a Tennessee touchdown was called back on the holding penalty. Bironas’ third field goal of the afternoon pushed the lead to 23-17. Things didn’t get any better for the Chiefs in the fourth quarter. In only two possessions, Kansas City managed just three first downs and its longest drive ended in an interception at the Tennessee 27-yard line. The Titans would add one final field goal to ice the 26-17 win.

GAME NOTES• The Chiefs converted 11 of their 17 third-down attempts (64.7%), the club’s best mark of the season and the team’s highest conversion percentage since going nine of 13 (69.2%) at Cleveland (12/3/06).

After both clubs exchanged punts, Carolina got the ball on the Chiefs 46-yard line and QB Jake Delhomme drove the offense in seven plays to a touchdown. Most of the damage was done on the ground with the duo of Williams and rookie RB Jonathan Stewart.

Williams went 10 yards up the middle untouched for the Carolina TD, giving the Panthers a 7-0 lead with 5:10 to play in the first quarter.

When the Chiefs got the ball back, they were unable to manage a first down. But, on a third down-and-16 yards to go play, Huard hooked up with TE Tony Gonzalez for a six-yard gain. That play gave Gonzalez the career receiving yardage record for tight ends in NFL history, surpassing TE Shannon Sharpe (10,060).

At the end of the first quarter the Panthers offense began a nice drive, reaching the Chiefs 15-yard line. But Stewart fumbled on a run over the right side when he was hit by DT Glenn Dorsey. The ball was recovered by DT Tank Tyler. However, KC’s offense could not convert.

Carolina again went on a drive into Kansas City territory. The big play was a 38-yard catch and run from Delhomme to WR Steve Smith. Six plays later, Delhomme dropped a short pass to the right side to Williams, who was not covered by a blitzing Chiefs defense. He ran 26 yards for his second TD of the game.

After Kansas City’s offense again couldn’t sustain a drive, Delhomme marched his club down the field, chewing up 6:07 of the second quarter clock on an 11-play drive. It ended with another Williams TD, this one a 32-yard run on a draw play, for a 21-0 lead at halftime.

The Chiefs offense got the ball first in the third quarter, but turned the ball over on their first snap when Carolina DE Julius Peppers knocked the ball out of QB Damon Huard’s hands at the Kansas City 28-yard line.

On a third-and-goal play from the Chiefs five-yard line, S Jarrad Page picked off a Delhomme pass intended for Smith. The officials on the field ruled that Page did not get both feet in bounds on the catch, but the Chiefs challenged and an instant replay review overturned the call and gave Kansas City possession.

However, the Chiefs were picked off on their very next play as Carolina LB Jon Beason stepped in front of a Huard pass. Kasay then kicked a 32-yard field goal to give the Panthers a 24-0 lead.

That lead grew by seven points thanks to another Kansas City turnover. CB Ken Lucas logged the interception and returned it 43 yards. Three plays later, Delhomme hit WR Muhsin Muhammad for a 47-yard TD pass that made the score 31-0 as the third quarter came to an end. Early in the fourth quarter, Kasay added a 43-yard FG.

GAME NOTES• TE Tony Gonzalez surpassed TE Shannon Sharpe (10,060) for the most receiving yards by a tight end in NFL history. Gonzalez now owns more receptions (84), receiving yards (10,075) and TD receptions (68) than any other tight end in NFL history.
