This & That

Royals Notes - Kansas City Royals @ Cleveland Indians - Wednesday, September 11, 2013

MOOSE TURNS 25--Kansas City third baseman turns 25 years old today but celebrated a few hours early with a huge double in last night’s win...his date of birth is synonomous with several famous muscians including rapper Ludacris (36), Harry Connick Jr. (46), Charles Kelley of Lady Antebellum (32), Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart (70) and Tommy Shaw of Styx (60), as well as fellow big leaguer Jacoby Ellsbury (30)

MAGIC NUMBER ACHIEVED--The Royals blew by the magin 4-run mark last night and in doing so upped their record to 57-12 when scoring at least four times in a game, including a 10-1 mark in the last 11...conversely, the club is just 19-57 when scoring three or fewer.

CHRIS “GETZ” SOME THEFTS--Pinch runner Chris Getz made the most of his abbreviated appearance last night, pilfering a pair of bags in the ninth inning to up his season total to 15...Kansas City continues to lead the Majors with 136 stolen bases on the year, 14 more than the N.L. leading Brewers and A.L. runner-up Texas...the Royals are also second in the Majors in stolen base success with an 82.4 rate, trailing only Boston at 85.5, though KC has attempted 34 more thefts...Alcides Escobar is 18-for-18 in thefts, which has established a single-season consecutive steal record for the Royals, breaking the 16 straight by Gary Thurman in 1989...the club record for consecutive steals over multiple seasons is held by Beltran with 33, while Escobar is currently 25-for-25 dating back to last year.

HOLLY AMONG ELITE GROUP--Closer Greg Holland upped his 2013 save total to 41 with last night’s perfect ninth inning...he’s the fourth different hurler in franchise history to reach at least 40 in a year and accomplishing it for the sixth time overall in team annals...he joins Dan Quisenberry and Joakim Soria, who each hit the 40-mark twice and Jeff Montgomery, who saved 45 in 1993, tying Quiz’s club mark from 1983...Greg has now made good on 34 of his last 35 attempts dating back to May 30...since that date, Holly has four more saves than any other reliever in the Majors, with Craig Kimbrel next with 31, while the A.L. leader in that span is Jim Johnson with 27...a first-time All-Star in 2013, Holland has allowed just 4 earned runs since May 30, spanning 43.0 innings for a 0.84 ERA, while recording 64 strikeouts, a 13.6 strikeouts per 9-inning ratio in that span and limiting the opposition to a .149 average.

PEN STILL TOPS CHARTS TOO--The bullpen continues to lead the American League with a 2.60 mark, trailing only Atlanta’s big league leading 2.32 mark...if the current 2.60 ERA holds up over this final month, it would be the second best A.L. pen since 1982, with only Oakland’s 2.35 relief ERA in 1990 ranking better...Kansas City’s relief corps also leads the American League in lowest opponents batting average with a .223 mark.

DIVISIONAL WORK--Kansas City is 3-2 in this stretch of 12 straight against foes from the A.L. Central...the Royals are now 37-28 in intra-division play, with Cleveland and the Tigers the only opponent KC will face in this dozen game span...KC is currently 11-15 vs. the A.L. West with six still remaining (Seattle-3 and Texas-3)...Kansas City wrapped up play against the A.L. East with the Royals finishing 19-15 vs. that division...KC finished interleague work with a 9-11 record.

GORDO BIDDING FOR GOLD AGAIN--Alex Gordon had his fifth career multi-assist game as an outfielder on August 31 in Toronto to takeover the American League lead in outfield assists with 14, trailing Arizona’s Gerardo Parra by one for the big league lead...since making a position switch from third base to leftfield on a full-time basis in 2011, two-time Rawlings Gold Glove winner Gordon has led all outfielders in the game in assists with 51, 14 more than any active outfielder and 20 more than any other leftfielder...Gordon led the A.L. with 20 in 2011 and finished second to then-teammate Jeff Francoeur’s 19 last year with 17 of his own...the Kansas City outfield as a unit has compiled 137 outfield assists since the start of the 2011 season, 35 more than any other Major League club in that span.

PLENTY OF ROAD WORK AHEAD--The Royals have 17 games left on the 2013 regular season docket, 11 of which are slated for the road...KC enters today with a 36-34 road mark and have a chance to record its first over .500 road season since 2003 when the club was 43-39 out of town...the countdown to the end of the year features today’s series finale in Cleveland, a 3-game visit to Detroit and then the final homestand which features the Tribe in Kansas City next Monday-Wednesday and then following the last off day of the year on September 19, the Royals will play host for the final time in the regular season when Texas invades “The K” for a 3-game set on September 20-22...the final trip is a cross-country venture, with a trio of night games in Seattle on September 23-25 and then a 4-game regular season ender in Chicago.
