Dear KJPHA members:I want to take a minute to

express my gratitude for your support of the 9th Junior National Hereford Expo in Kansas City.

I personally was impressed with the professionalism each member took in presenting their animals in the ring along with your respect you showed toward each other every day in the barn.

Helping each other with supporting words of good luck, or just helping each other in the wash rack, the show chute, and yes, I did not forget the dinner food table. The food was fantastic.

Cooperation and respect shown by the parents filtered down to the smallest member, and makes the week full of good memories that each of us can take home to remember forever.

Sue, I also want to express a special thank you to you for

all you do to make the junior nationals memorable for each of us members. Your hard work does not go unnoticed, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Not to forget the Kansas officer team and directors, your leadership was awesome, and for that I commend you. I am proud to be president of an organization such as ours, thank you for making my job easier.

A) Sandhill FarmsRt. 1, Box 76Haviland, KS 67509(620) 995-4072

Our farming and ranching operation is starting it’s sixth generation.

We hosted our first registered bull and commercial female sale last spring. The bulls sold into 13 states and two Canadian provinces. About 70% of the bulls went into commercial programs. We will be continuing this as an annual event on the first Friday of April each year.

To make our cattle better, we use artificial insemination (AI) and embryo transfer as tools in our breeding program, and most of our sires have been tested in the American Hereford Association’s (AHA) young sire test program.

We collect ultrasound data on all registered cattle at a year of age.

As a promotional tool, we have been exhibiting bulls in the National Western pen show the last 13 years, and have had the champion or reserve pen the last three years.

B) Umberger Polled HerefordsRt. 1, Box 59Rozel, KS 67574(620) 527-4472

What is now Umberger Polled Herefords (UPH) was founded by KPHA Hall of Fame member Frank Brannan. He bought his first Polled Herefords in 1928, and enjoyed a very successful career, shipping cattle throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Following WWII, his son-in-law Dean Umberger came back to the farm, and Frank and Dean’s partnership continued to sell cattle throughout the Western U.S.

Dean exhibited cattle in the Denver yards for many years.

Upon graduating from Kansas

State University and a period of time in the U.S. Air Force, Greg Umberger returned to the farm forming a partnership with Dean. Dean passed away in 2001.

Today the herd consists of 140 registered Polled Hereford cows and 60 commercial Polled Hereford cows. We have sold cattle into 34 states and Canada, and 2008 marks 80 years of continuous Polled Hereford cattle on this farm.

C) Brannan & ReinhardtPolled HerefordsRt. 1, Box 161Bison, KS 67520(785) 387-2428

Brannan & Reinhardt Polled Herefords was formed in 1947 by KPHA Hall of Fame member Les Brannan and his son-in-law Nelson C. Reinhardt. Les had been operating as Les Brannan Polled Herefords since the late 1920s and had bred such bulls as Victor Domino, King Domino and Real Plato Domino (National Champion in the early 1940s).

This herd was dispersed in 1961 after Les’ death. A small remnant of this herd was carried on by grandson Nelson K. (Kent) Reinhardt as Banner Plains Polled Herefords, the herd was sold to his step-father and mother (Dorothy Brannan/Reinhardt/Moore) during Kent’s active duty service with the US Army.

The current herd was started in 1973 by Kent after his return from active duty and while serving as county agent in Decatur County. The herd was maintained in Decatur County until 1990 when circumstances provided an opportunity to move the herd back to the Reinhardt family home in Rush County.

The current herd of 30 cows traces back to cows bred by Floyd Coen and Bob Smith which were

purchased from Dwight Williams. Bloodlines used on these cows include a Tradition 434V son (B&R Mr Les C04, SOD that was owned with Floyd Coen) and by BT Prophet 117P, VCR HPH Relay 707W, Gerber Watchfire 117F, Feltons Legend 242, Feltons Ozzie 492 and MSU Star Headliner.

Present herd sire is a son of BKR Triple Plus 73C 20L out of a Felton Legend 242 daughter (B&R Miss Legend 242 RN01, DOD) that made DOD with her third calf and includes two additional DOD dams in her maternal pedigree.

Future herd sires are sons and grandsons of B&R Mr Watchfire P12, a son of Gerber Watchfire 117F owned with Meadowlark Farms, Kirtland, N.M.

We maintain an active AI program and used EFBeef Schu-lar Proficient N093 during our 2008 breeding season.

Brannan & Reinhardt Polled Herefords has been a Gold TPR Breeder since the program’s inception. The herd has been performance tested since its start with cow weights at weaning since 1990 and ultrasound data collected since 1998.

The herd is owned by Kent, Pat and Nelson Reinhardt, Otis, KS; Derek, Jennifer, Landon, Alexa and Izzi Reinhardt, Bison, KS; and Larry, Allison, Kylee, Bevan and Lilly Gradig, Yoder, KS.

F) Virgil J. Staab & Sons 1962 220 Ave.Hays, KS 67601(785) 628-1102

Virgil J. Staab & Sons began breeding cattle in 1929 under the ranch name Staab Hereford Ranch. Grandpa John C. Staab purchased his first Hereford heifers from Wilfred Truan, a local neighbor.

The ranch bought its first Polled Hereford cattle in 1940, when they

purchased from the Jake Reich Polled Herefords from Natoma, Kan. My dad, Virgil, and his two brothers, Benno and Frank, ran the ranch until 1971, at which time Virgil J. Staab & Sons Polled Herefords was started.

Through the years we have seen many genetic changes. We have always strived to breed efficiency into our cattle, and we have done this thru careful AI selection.

We think by making these selections we have not only increased our bottom line, but also our valued customers’ bottom lines, which in return keeps bringing them back.

In 2006 we began selling our steer calves through the Certified Hereford Beef (CHB) Hereford Verified program, at Ford County Feeders with Danny Herrmann. We have seen fantastic results from our 2005 and 2006 calf crops, we can’t wait to see the results from the 2007 calf crop.

The past seven years we have also sold all of our heifers off the farm as yearling breeding heifers. These heifers have gone to registered and commercial breeders in New Mexico, Missouri, Colorado and Kansas.

We are located 5 miles north of Hays on 183 HWY and 2 1/2 miles west. We look forward to seeing you bright and early Aug. 31, we will have coffee and breakfast for you when you get here.

G) Pieper Land & Cattle/Sutor Hereford Farms400 DD Rd.Palco, KS 67657(785) 737-2830

David and Dana Pieper have lived and worked together on Sutor Ranch since 1998. They married in 1999 and are raising two children Cody (11) and Cady (4). Sutor Hereford Farms (SHF) belongs to Dana’s grandparents, Darrell and Joy Sutor.

Herefords have played a large

role in the history of SHF. The Sutor family was recognized in 2004 as a Century Breeder.

Dana moved to SHF in 1997 and purchased all of her polled cows from her parents at H Bar Ranch. Over the years Dana has purchased all of her Grandpa’s spring calving cows, a few fall calving heifers and several bulls.

The cows are horned bloodlines that mostly originated from Weldon Edwards’ dispersal sale. The fall heifers are the polled daughters of those cows sired by a bull from Sandhill Farms.

In October 2006 David and Dana purchased their own place about 4 miles to the southwest of the ranch headquarters. This last March, they purchased 40-plus horned cows from Kyle Rutt (Rutt Herefords) in Campbell, Neb. Those cows are mainly Miles City Line 1 bred cows but there are also some Holden, Cooper and Jamison Line 1s as well. Their herd is made up of about half horned and half polled cows with a few commercial Angus and black baldie cows as well.

We are going to host the tour stop at our new place which is located off of I-70 at the Ellis exit 14 miles north to 4 Road along the Rooks/Ellis County line. Then you turn north and go 1 mile to DD Road. You can’t miss it. We hope you will come and eat lunch with us.

G) H-Bar Ranch10541 S. Cherokee Rd.Modoc, KS 67863(620) 872-5254

Charlie Moore and his parents purchased their first Polled Herefords in 1976.

While in college Charlie worked for Byron Moberly. The foundation H Bar herd came from Moberly Polled Hereford of St. Francis.

In 1978 Charlie married Darla Sutor and the herd was expanded to about 50 head.

Previously, the Moores had always run grass cattle so the registered cow-calf operation was a new dimension. The herd increased to more than 100 head.

Drought conditions in 2002-03 forced the sale of nearly 40 head. We have 55 spring calving cows and 20 fall calving cows. We are using BR DM Channing ET in our AI program. Our three children were all active in the junior program and continue to have Polled Herefords.
