Civil Air Patrol puts in 10,000 hours for GulfCoast spill cleanup
Members of the Civil Air Patrol have contributed
more than 10,000 man-hours to the oil spill
cleanup efforts in the Gulf of Mexico. That's
more than $179,000 worth of volunteer labor,
according to CAP figures. The calculation is
based on the state's $17.34 hourly rate fordetermining the value of volunteerism. At the
national average of $20.85 an hour, the value
exceeds $216,000, according to CAP
calculations.
In all, 239 CAP volunteers have performed
more than 10,360 hours in service to the Gulf
cleanup efforts. The volunteers are using
vacation time to go to the coast and work. They
include members from Alabama, Georgia,
Florida, Mississippi and Tennessee.
The Alabama Wing has provided pilots,
observers, aerial photographers and mission
staff. All of the 19 squadrons in Alabama are
participating in the efforts.
CAP pilots also have logged more than 1,000 flight hours while photographers have documented the
oil spill from the air -- taking more than 3,000 photos a day, according to CAP.
Those crews are flying more than 700 miles of coastline from Louisiana to Florida, and the images are
primarily of the oil containment barriers and land near the shoreline. The photographs help with
planning and monitoring the effectiveness of the barriers.
Maj. Gen. Amy Courter, CAP's national commander, visited the incident command center in Mobile
recently and said that CAP would continue assisting with the cleanup efforts.
The Alabama National Guard also is continuing to support the cleanup with 350 personnel in the Gulf.
Guard members have been providing security at staging areas, assisting with public affairs,
conducting aerial missions with Coast Guard spotters and installing barriers around Dauphin Island.

This June six members of the Kansas Wing travelled to Nebraska to attend the NorthCentral Regional Staff College at Offutt AFB. NCR Staff College was a great place tointeract with colleague from other wings and regions and allowed us to exchange ideasand methods used in our organization.
Team pride was built with a series of fun exercises and activities and Mary Donley led uswith ease and the practiced hand of an experienced school teacher. The Materials pre-sented were on-topic and relevant to our organization. We were privileged to view avideo clip of General Lorenz of the USAF that demonstrated the great leadership wehave in this country.
Valuable lessons were learned from another presentation about the crash of a B12 andthe steps that could have been taken to avert such a disaster. The discussions that en-
sued were animated and served to show that we are all, individually, responsible as Offi-cers to speak up and do the right thing when it is needed.
A field trip to the Offutt Museum was a welcome break from the classroom. The groupsbroke up and roamed the huge building for a few hours to view a range of aircraft and ofcourse the gift shop!
Although the class was split into 3 groups by the end of the week there was a tangiblebond between us all and strong friendships were forged. The week long experience wasgreat and one that was well worth the effort of attending.
Attending from Kansas Wing included Roger Eaton, Lauri Emery, Paul Bayless, Pam Morris,Nichole and JD Schlesener.

National Blue Beret2010
National Blue Beret (NBB) this summer was attended by 22 members ofthe Kansas Wing, making it the wing with the highest number of staff and ca-dets to participate in this special activity.
The event is held in Oshkosh, Wisconsin and is the largest Airshow inNorth America with 10,000 planes arriving and departing in a one-week period.Multiple van loads of people and equipment caravanned to the event a fewdays before the official start in order to get things set up on site and ready forthe influx of cadets.
In total there were 137 cadets and the Staff of 41 Seniors came allover the nation we even had a remote Staff member, Major Jeff Morris, fromIraq Skyping in to help with the IT setup.
Colonel Regena Aye was the Activity Director again this year and it wasa bittersweet event as it was her last time as such at NBB as her new duties asDean at Allen College preclude her ability to be able to spend that amount of
time for this activity next year. The Staff and Cadets presented Col Aye with agift of appreciation in thanks for her leadership and to mark her last NBB.
Many of the Kansas Staff held key positions at this multifunction event.Colonel Tim Hansen was the ES director instructing safety and flight line mar-shalling and Major Mark Lahan was the Head TAC and in charge of the 12 flightTACS. Each flight consisted of a crew of 12 cadets. The Cadet Commanderwas also a Kansas cadet, Col. Mitchell Edwards.
This year had some special challenges as the weather in Wisconsin de-cided to throw us some heavy rains and winds. Wisconsin had record amountsof rainfall during the first week and the NBB grounds were under water formost of that time making practice very difficult for the cadets. The formationgrounds and the area assigned for tents were flooded and the state bird(mosquito!) flourished in that environment.
The cadets quickly adapted as the weather finally changed and theAirshow began operations. As the second week drew to an end the now-experienced cadets earned the right to wear the Blue Berets that they had cometo Oshkosh for. Cadets learned to shave and shape their berets and when the St.Alban pins were issued they were able to wear their berets for the first time. The sense of achievement in the complex was palpable as the cadets wore theirachievement with pride.
Many of the KansasWing membersattending had beento NBB before andprovided a wealthof experience that
helped to make thisevent run smoothlyand efficiently. Theexposure andchallenges of thisevent make it aunique experience and one that iswell worth earning leaving thoseof us that have just returned tosay..where do Iapply for next year!.
