GENERAL SCHEDULING INFORMATION

1. According to Vermilion Parish School Board policy, all 9th to 11th grade students are required to schedule seven classes. Seniors are allowed to schedule only the number of classes needed to fulfill graduation requirements. Senior athletes must schedule a minimum of four classes to be eligible for athletics (a senior aide assignment does not count as a class).

2. Students and parents will select courses for the upcoming year during scheduling week in the spring. Schedules will be handed out to students before the end of the school year. Students will have an opportunity at that time to make changes and during designated days during the summer if necessary. Schedule changes may not be made during orientation week or at the beginning of the school year. Only seniors may change schedules for extenuating circumstances at midterm upon approval of the administration.

3. All Kaplan High School students must attend orientation held prior to the beginning of the school year. A student who enrolls after the first day of school goes through an individual orientation with the principal and assistant principal.

4. Please read all scheduling information carefully before turning in a schedule request form. This form is important as it is used in developing the master schedule for the next school year. If you have any questions, please call the school at 337-643-6385 or 337-643-7973.

Louisiana Department of Education Community Service Diploma Endorsement

What is a Community Service Diploma Endorsement? A Community Service Diploma Endorsement is a diploma endorsement that Louisiana high school students may earn upon graduation. Beginning with freshmen entering school year 2013-14 and beyond, local education agencies (LEAs) may award a Community Service Diploma Endorsement to students completing a minimum number of documented community service hours by graduation. Authorized by Act 295 of the 2012 Regular Session of the Legislature, this voluntary diploma endorsement was established to: • Engage students in their communities; • Provide a process to apply what they have learned in a social setting; and • Provide opportunities for students to explore their interests, passions, and potential career aspirations in an engaged, hands-on environment.

What are the requirements? • Students entering as freshmen school year 2013-2014 or beyond; • Local Education Agencies document community service hours using the Community Service Diploma Endorsement Tracking Form. Local education agencies (LEAs) may award a Community Service Diploma Endorsement to students completing a minimum number of documented, approved community service hours by graduation as outlined below.

GRADE MINIMUM HOURS 9 10

10 20

11 25

12 25

TOTAL 80 A student who (1) transfers into a participating LEA after the 9th grade or (2) graduates early may receive a community service endorsement if that student: • Meets the minimum requirements for each year, and • Completes a total of 80 community service hours by graduation.

How do students get started? 1. Determine if your school/district allows students to earn a Community Service Diploma Endorsement. 2. Review types of community service categories. 3. Join school and/or community service clubs to plan and conduct service projects (Note: If your school

does not have a service club, contact local non-profits about planned service projects.) 4. Select and plan carefully for community service events that do not conflict with school and district

calendars (e.g., state tests, required school activities, holidays). 5. Use the Community Service Diploma Endorsement Student Documentation Form to submit your

participation to school/district Community Service contact for inclusion on Community Service Diploma Endorsement Tracking Form.

6. For additional service opportunities, go to http://volunteerlouisiana.gov/ .

DUAL ENROLLMENT PROGRAM The Vermilion Parish School Board will pay (tuition/fees/textbooks) for up to 12 credit

hours total per student for dual enrollment courses taught on the high school campus or at

the Career Campus at Abbeville High School. The parent/student is responsible for all

costs above and beyond what the Vermilion Parish School Board pays. The following

circumstances will require the parent/student to pay:

The student enrolls in more than 12 hours of dual enrollment (DE) credit during

his/her years of high school. The tuition rate will be at the current VPSB MOU

(contract) cost which is a reduced cost from the normal college tuition rate.

If a student withdraws with a grade of “W” or receives a “D” or “F” in any course,

the VPSB will not pay for any dual enrollment course(s) in subsequent semesters. If

the post-secondary institution allows the student to enroll in a course the following

semester, the parent/student is responsible for all costs (dual enrollment tuition, fees,

and books). Receiving a “D” or “F” in a post-secondary course is considered failing

by the post-secondary institution. A grade of “W” is given when a student

withdraws on or after the “census date” which is the 14th class date for the semester.

All dual enrollment courses must be approved by the high school counselor and

principal prior to the student being enrolled in the post-secondary course.

Absences and Grading: Attendance and grading policies are set by the college.

Students must follow these policies. The VPSB cannot overturn/change the grading

and attendance policy of the college.

Dual enrollment college grades are recorded on the college transcript and will

follow the student throughout their college education. NOTE: Grades earned will

affect scholarships and TOPS.

Dual enrollment textbooks are the property of the VPSB and must be returned at the

end of each semester.

Upon the parent/student incurring any cost for a dual enrollment course (example:

additional credit hours above the maximum of twelve or becomes ineligible for the

VPSB to pay for dual enrollment courses due to failing grades or withdrawal), the

parent will submit payment prior to the student being enrolled in the course(s).
