Kappa League
Roll Call
As promised, in an effort to better
bridge the gap of communication
between the parents, the Kappa
League coordinators, and the members
of Alexandria-Fairfax (AF) Alumni
Chapter, we have created a monthly
newsletter that details events planned
for participants in the Alexandria-
Fairfax Alumni Chapter Guide Right
program—to include the Kappa
League, the AF Kappa League STEM
program, and National Society of
Black Engineers (NSBE) programs.
This newsletter will also offer a
glimpse into some of the other social
programs the AF chapter is actively
involved in and promoting within the
community.
We hope that this new form of
communication will serve as a vehicle
for open dialogue between you the
parents and the various committee
members.

A RESOUNDING SUCCESS!
Thank you to all who attended the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and Scholarship
Workshop on February 28, 2015, at the Multi-Purpose Facility. To say the event was a success would be
an understatement. We expand the FAFSA Scholarship workshop this year by exposing kids to scholarships
that are available from local college alumni members and Greek Organizations. Last year approximately 15
kids attended the workshop. This year we had over 40 participants to include parents, HBCU
representatives, and over 20 kids! Thank you!
The featured speaker of the workshop was Ms. Maisha Challenger (DST) from the Department of
Education who is an expert in federal aid programs. In addition, we had representatives from the college
alumni associations and Greek organizations who gave short presentations on their schools/organizations
and scholarship application process. Below is a short recap of the event and the attendees.
Keynote Speaker: Ms. Maisha Challenger
School Representatives:

The Jr. Kappa League S.T.E.M. program meets at Patrick Henry Elementary School from 10:00am to
12:00pm. The instructors are Alexandria-Fairfax (VA) Alumni Chapter’s own Tsaike Brundige (Chairman),
newly initiated Alexandria-Fairfax member Jason Duffus (Assistant S.T.E.M Instructor) and they are joined
by special guest and Patrick Henry’s science teacher Seth Maher. There are nine (9) students (4th
and 5th
graders) who participate in the program.
This past weekend the students met and were given the Owl Pallet Project. The students separated an owl
pallet to find out what the owl ate. The students found bones of rodents, skew and other small animals and
bugs. The students were then asked to identify the bones on a chart. After they found and identified several
bones, they had to design a food chain, starting with the sun, grass, animals/bugs, and owl. The students
were very intrigued with the project, especially in finding and identifying the bones. Overall, the project
went well and the students enjoyed themselves.
The final part of the session involved reading. Some students are below grade level for reading, some are at
grade level and some are well above grade level. Mr. Maher brought out reading materials and the students
were divided into groups of three where they read for 20 minutes.

CONGRATULATIONS!
Congratulations to one of Alexandria-Fairfax (VA) Alumni Chapter’s
Kappa League Senior, Kofi Roberts!
Kofi recently competed in the DECA competition held in Virginia Beach, VA. DECA’s industry-validated
competitive events are aligned with the National Curriculum Standards in the career clusters of marketing,
business management and administration, finance, and hospitality and tourism. DECA’s flagship evaluation
process involves students in both a written component, such as an exam or report, and an interactive
component with an industry professional serving as a judge. DECA’s competitive events directly contribute
to every student being college and career ready when they graduate from high school.
Kofi competed in a role play exercise on business law and ethics involving prompting a chain of drug stores
to improve the health of employees without making them feel excluded. For his participation, he was
awarded a medal for best role play and a medal for State finalist. Kofi will also be traveling to Anaheim, CA,
this month as part of the NSBE Robotics Team.
Again, congratulations to Kofi on his ACHIEVEMENTS!
CONGRATULATIONS!
In our last Newsletter (February) we announced that
Tarik J. Terry, an Alexandria-Fairfax (VA) Alumni
Chapter Kappa League Senior was accepted to Old
Dominion University (his first choice) over the
Christmas Holidays! Since his acceptance, Tarik has
been busy applying for scholarships. We are pleased to
once again announce Tarik has procured his first
scholarship, the 2015 Jewel Scholarship from the Board
of Directors of the Joyce-Gillespie-Harrington Educational and Charitable
Foundation, Inc. We look forward to updating future Newsletters with
announcements of more scholarships for Tarik.
Again, congratulations to Tarik on his ACHIEVEMENTS!

The Stock Market game is not a new concept;
however, the activity is new to the Kappa League Program of Kappa Alpha Psi
Fraternity, Incorporated. The purpose of the game is to introduce an activity that
fosters teamwork, research, scholastic aptitude, competition, economic exposure
and overall real world learning. This game has been researched and shows that it
has helped students in personal finance, math, economics and college and career
readiness. The Alexandria-Fairfax Alumni Chapter views our Kappa League
students as future leaders who could enjoy this activity as a tool for their future
success.
This activity is a kick starter to a
potential national game where our
AF Kappa League students may
have a chance to compete with
other Kappa League Chapters in
participating in the Stock Market
Game. Stay tuned and be ready to
Buy Low and Sell High!
