Karen Refugee Committee Newsletter and Activity Report

May - 2017 Dear All Readers,

On 28th of April, KRC Chairperson and some camp representatives organized trip to Hpa-An and

met with Karen’s religious leaders. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss about the refugee

future. Based on current situation, three conditions have been agreed to follow after the meeting.

(1) To study and analyse the situation of refugees (2) To prepare for emergency needs for refugees

and (3) To plan for long term solution for the returnees. On 3-30 April, KRC and KNU proposed

training related to livelihood program for the refugees and preparedness for their future when

they return. The training was proposed to Mae Fah Luang Foundation. The trainees include KRC’s

representatives, KNU district representatives, CIDKP representatives, representatives from seven

camps, religious leaders and teachers, and village representatives. The total number participated is

35 in total. The training was provided by Mae Fah Luang Foundation and supported by Karen

National Union, Thai government, Burmese government, Committee for Refugee Return, and

Karen Refugee Committee. Based on reflection, the training is very helpful and benefit to the

trainees. Not only that, the skills and knowledge provided during the training will continue serve

benefit to people in refugee camps and other respective areas. We would like to thank Thai

government, Burmese government, especially the Karen State government, KNU Central, especially

Dooplaya district officers and Mae Fah Luang Foundation and its 12 staffs, for your support to

make this training successful. We also want to thank other organizations for helping to prepare for

the refugee’s return.

Sincerely yours,

General Secretary

Karen Refugee Committee
