We continue to have a very positive start to the year. I must make special mention of our newest and youngest students, this year’s Kindergarten. They have been the most settled and ‘ready for school’ group we’ve had here for a long time! They are off to a great start to an exciting life of learning and friendship over the next 13 years. Getting to school safely and stress free

The start of school term signals the start of the Kariong traffic chaos. To ease traffic congestion, improve child safety and decrease parental stress, perhaps your child could walk or catch the bus to school?

Walking is good for you

While younger kids need to be accompanied, older children are often both willing and able to make their own way to school. Obviously we don't all have the time to walk our kids to school, but perhaps a "walk pooling" arrangement could be made with parents that live nearby. Whatever works for you, you'll be doing everyone a favour (including the ozone layer and your purse) by leaving the car at home.

Some good reasons to walk to school:

• the weather is with us - make the most of it! • younger kids benefit from the one-on-one time

with their parents • older kids enjoy the independence that walking to

or from school fosters, not to mention the time to chat and unwind with their friends

• all kids (and their parents) benefit from the exercise and the chance to take stock of their surroundings- you can surreptitiously check out what's going on in their neighbourhood (maybe some good renovating or gardening ideas along the way)

Too far to walk? What about the bus?

The School Student Transport Scheme (SSTS) provides free travel between home and school Monday to Friday on school days. To be eligible for the scheme an applicant must be a resident of NSW, 4 years 6 months of age or older and enrolled as one of the following:

• an infant student (K-2), the distance between their home and school being irrelevant

• a primary student (Years 3-6) who lives more than 1.6 kms (radial distance) from school, or 2.3 kms or more by the most direct practical walking route to the nearest entry point to the school

Application forms are available from the school. Forms must be completed and returned to the school. The school will forward them to the transport operator. If

eligible, the operator will issue the student with a bus pass. Parent-Teacher Information Night

Don’t forget to mark the Parent-Teacher Information Night (Wednesday 13th February) in your diary. This is an important event at which you will receive an overview of your child’s coming year. It is also an opportunity to get to know your child’s class teacher.

While your diary is open, be sure to add our first P&C meeting on Monday 18th February. We’re looking forward to a big turnout. John Barwick

Electronic newsletters

As mentioned last week we offer newsletter delivery in three formats.

1. on the school website, where you can view a

colour version of the weekly newsletter. The

website also is where you can download and

print off any note that has been lost in transit (or

is still at the bottom of the bag next to the

squashed banana). KPS website (www.kariong-

p.schools.det.nsw.edu.au);

2. receive an emailed copy of the newsletter (this is

a colour version and is sent to you individually) or

3. continue to receive a paper copy.

Here is how to make your choice known to us, please fill in the slip on page 3 and return it to your child’s class teacher. 1. If you would like to read the newsletter online (and not receive a paper copy), 2. If you would like to receive an email version of the newsletter, 3. If you would like to continue to receive a paper copy. In the interests of preserving our forests and protecting the school’s printing budget, I am encouraging as many families as possible to utilise the electronic options.

Level One and Behaviour Cards

At Kariong we follow four school rules…Be Kind, Be Proud, Be Safe, Be Considerate, and if students follow these rules they remain on Level 1. As Parents and Caregivers you receive a behaviour card each Friday which records the level your child was on for the week. The card is returned on Monday. At the end of the term all students who have remained on Level 1 will participate in the reward treat or event.

Value of the Month – Co-operation and Participation

Another feature of Kariong’s Student Welfare Policy is the fact that throughout the year we acknowledge students who display outstanding values. For the month of February we will be focusing on Co-operation and Participation. Co-operation involves working together to achieve common goals. We will be talking to the children about helping and supporting others and the importance of working together. Co-operation also involves talking nicely to other people when there is a problem and trying to reach a solution which is acceptable for all concerned. Co-operation is not about people only being concerned about getting their own way. Most conflicts can be resolved in a way that they become a ‘win win’ situation for all concerned. We request that you reinforce co-operative behaviours at home and talk to your children about what co-operation means, using examples from home. Participation is always being willing to be involved. This allows everyone to have new experiences and develops a sense of belonging to the group or organisation. This is particularly important in life as if you limit your opportunities to participate you also limit your opportunities to learn, grow and have fun. The messages behind our Values Education program are universal and it helps children to understand them and live by them if they are modelled, reinforced and discussed at home and at school.

School Photographs

This week your child received a personalised envelope from MSP Photography. This envelope needs to be returned on Photo Day, Wednesday, 20th February whether purchasing photos or not. Students are expected to wear full school uniform, including black shoes. Family Photos, for students who attend our school will be taken on the day. If you wish for your children to have a group photo taken please either collect a family order form from the office or phone to request one to be sent home (43 40 1885) prior to Photo Day. It would be

appreciated if this envelope could be returned to the office no later than Tuesday 19th February so a timetable can be arranged to collect the siblings for their photos.

Text Books

Every child should have received a note this week regarding textbooks. Please return payments in the envelope provided by Wednesday as it will be paid directly to the Top Bookshop. If you will have difficulty with this please contact me at the office. It is essential each child has the required textbook(s) to work from to complete in class activities.

Student Assistance

The school is aware of the additional costs incurred to parents throughout the year. For those parents who are experiencing difficulty meeting costs of school programs, there are limited funds available to support parents as part of the Student Assistance Scheme. We do not want to exclude any child from activities on financial grounds. Further information and application forms for Student Assistance can be obtained from the office or by contacting me.

Morning Assembly

Thank you to the parents who are waiting quietly at morning assemblies. We have student lead assemblies and it is difficult for them to proceed if there is additional

noise. It is important that all students can hear the announcements so they can take any messages home and to be informed about the events for the day. To assist this process I do ask that if you want to wait whilst the assembly is taking place could you either be in the COLA or keep the walk ways clear so we can exit the Courtyard Area safely and quickly. Thanks again for your support in this matter.
