About Karolinska Institutet

Karolinska Institutet is a globally respected medical university marked by a passion for research and a drive to contribute to the improvement of human health. Karolinska Institutet today stands for more than 40 per cent of all academic medical research in Sweden.

The Stockholm Academic Healthcare SystemAs a medical university, it is essential for Karolinska Institutet to work in concert with the healthcare services, in particu-lar with the Stockholm County Council (SLL). In recent years, the partnership between Karolinska Institutet and SLL has intensified considerably and continues to expand. A common goal is to conduct research and education that is of the

highest international quality, and of benefit to today’s and tomorrow’s

patients. This is being achieved through developing the skills and knowledge of healthcare personnel, implementing research results, and – together with industry – developing and

testing pharmaceuticals and medical products.

SciLifeLabThe Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab) at the KI campus in Solna is a national resource centre for high-throughput bio-science with a focus on genomics, prote-omics, bioimaging and bioinformatics. The SciLifeLab has been formed jointly by the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Stockholm University, Uppsala University and Karolinska Institutet and is funded by strategic grants from the Swedish Govern-ment. Academic research, the healthcare

system and the life science industry can all benefit from SciLifeLab by active collaboration, access to advanced instru-mentation and active programs for know-ledge transfer.

Stem cell research and cell therapyKarolinska Institutet is one of few univer-sities that early and successfully has covered the gamut from advanced experimental stem cell research to clinical applications of cell therapy and regenerative medicine. Karolinska Institutet has established strong clinical expertise in cell therapy through years of world-leading work in transplant-ation medicine. This gives Karolinska Institutet a unique potential to achieve medical breakthroughs in a number of diseases.

EpidemiologySweden has a unique prerequisite for the pursuit of epidemiological research thanks to our long tradition of personal identity numbers, access to national demographic and health registries, and healthcare of high and uniform quality. This enables research on very large populations. World-class resources for epidemi-ological research are available at Karolinska Institutet including the KI Biobank, longi-tudinal cohorts such as the Swedish Twin Registry, and expanding competence in bio-

statistics. This puts Karolinska Institutet at the cutting edge of medical epidemiological research in an international perspective

Innovation systemTo ensure that innovations in medicine and health translate into benefits for health care, Karolinska Institutet has for several years built up a unique innovation system. The innovation system consists of a number of players with services which all aim to utilize ideas originating from research. Support for enterprise collaboration, counseling and education is provided, inspiration to the development of ideas is given by highlight-ing best practice, and collaboration between industry and academia is established.

About Karolinska Institutet

Research at Karolinska Institutet spans the entire medical field, from basic experimental research to patient-oriented and nursing research.

Cancer and haematologyKarolinska Institutet has a very broad, strong and often unique research base in cancer and haematology, which is ex-ploited by many groups distributed among several departments. Leading research is for example carried out in breast and prostate cancers and haematological cancers. The research spans from experimental studies on possible drug targets to clinical and epidemiological studies.

Cell, molecular, and structural biologyResearch in cell, molecular and structural biology is very advanced at Karolinska Institutet and involves the study of genes and their expression, as well as proteins and other organic substances, and how these co-operate in the living cell in order to improve our knowledge of fundamental biological processes. Ongoing research is concerned with certain disease areas like for example cancer, neurodegeneration, cardio-vascular diseases and inflam- matory conditions.

Circulation and respirationKarolinska Institutet has a long tradition of strong clinical research in cardio-vascular disease, atherosclerosis, and other vascular diseases such as complications of diabetes and renal disease. This has been further strengthened in recent decades by ad-ditional elements of strong fundamental research, which provide a clear orientation towards translational research. Pulmonary medicine, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma and lung cancer are other fields of research in this area.

Developmental biology, stem cells, and reproductive, regenerative and reparative medicineKarolinska Institutet is a leader in devel-opmental biology research which includes studies of how genes regulate cell growth, and the differentiation of cells from the stem cell stage and onwards in the forma-tion of tissues and organs with the aim of finding new methods of treating diseases and repairing damaged tissues. In repro-ductive research studies are made on germ cells, infertility, pregnancy, foetal medicine, the newborn infant and into andrology. The reparative medical research at Karolinska Institutet involves surgery and orthopae-dics.

Endocrinology and metabolismKarolinska Institutet´s research into endocrinology and metabolism touches upon many of the most important health problems of our time, including diabetes, obesity, hypertension, osteoporosis and hormonal disturbances. It aims to achieve both better treatments and more effective prevention programs and involves for example nutrition, physical activity, anaes-thesia and intensive care, drug metabolism, nephrology and gastroenterology.

Epidemiology and public health The focus in the epidemiological research at Karolinska Institutet is to understand the genetic, environmental and nutritional factors behind diseases like cancer, asthma/allergies, RA, infections and psychiatric

diseases. Public health research includes studies of

the major endemic diseases and their relationship to lifestyles and

environmental factors. Karolinska Institutet is very active in the global health research where prevention measures as well as health inequities within and between countries are important concerns.

Health care sciencesHealth care science is an extensive subject at Karolinska Institutet that includes studies in a number of disciplines such as nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and health economics. It examines the origins and preconditions for disease and health, as well as the consequences of disease from biological, psychosocial, cultural and econ-omic perspectives and the development of therapeutic measures.

Immunology, infection, inflammation and micro-biologyImmunology, infection and inflam- mation are often interacting factors in both acute and chronic conditions. Leading research in immunology and inflammation into, for example, rheumatic diseases is carried out at Karolinska Institutet. In the field of global health, successful research is performed on infections such as malaria, HIV and tuberculosis, with an emphasis on epidemiology, vaccination and prevention.

Neuroscience, psychiatry and behavioural scienceKarolinska Institutet has the largest neuro-science community in Sweden. Neuroscien-tists at Karolinska Institutet strive to make fundamental discoveries about nervous system function, and to translate research findings into improvements in the diagno-sis and treatment of psychiatric and neuro-logical disorders. Studies are for example made on neurodevelopmental disorders, Alzheimers disease and dementia, suicide and addictive disorders.
