OLD L R14IAN S SUi-REMEBy JAN HOWARD

Perhaps the best way to describe last week's round would be as a day foru,i sets. A look at the quarter-by-quarter scores breakdown also indicates that, forthe fi rst time, weather conditions played an important role at many grounds . Variable«inds and relatively high temperatures (for May) made accuracy difficult and testedthe stamina of many. It seems that some were, in fact, beginning to wilt by thecommencement of the final term .

One of the biggest upsets must havebeen the win by lowly St . Bernard'sover joint A Section leaders De LaSalle on the Malvern Collegians ownground. De La led by two goals athalf time, nine points at three-quartertime, but went down by eleven points, and so St . Bernard's slipped into fourthposition .

Marcellin led Caulfield Grammariansby eight points at the last change butcould only manage one goal one asagainst Caulfield's three goals eightin the last term - to see Caulfield scoreby eleven points and thereby record theirfirst win for the season . Unfortunatelyfor Marcellin they strike St. Bernard'sat Essendon today - a tough game fora team currently struggling to hold onto A Section .

Old Scotch and University Bluesrecorded solid wins over UniversityBlacks and Ivanhoe respectively. Scotch'sgreater winning margin, however, hasseen them take top spot away from theBlues for the first time. this season .

North Old Boys held Ormond atbay to open their account for 1978 .North began slowly and trailed Ormondat the short break, but took commandthereafter. Perhaps the unfortunateaccident involving Reserves player JohnMaguire provided a needed incentive towin at North . Apparently John has abadly broken leg and will be out offootball for some months . Commisera-tions John, and may you be back in thefray as soon as possible .

Old Melbournians were off to a flyingstart aaainst Collegians and led by fivegoals at quarter-time . In the secondterm Collegians came back and trailedby only seven points at the half-waypoint . The stage looked set for the closestruggle that had been anticipated . How-ever, Collegians were out-pointed fromthen on and Old Melburnians ran outeasy, five goal victors . The defeat seesO.M's as undisputed B Section leadersand Collegians "languishing" in fourthplace - on percentage .

Old Haileyburians, after their strongwin over Old Trinity Grammarians, havemoved into second position with Park-side - by virtue of the bye - areholding third .

Despite inaccurate kicking (or maybebecause of it), Monash Blues surviveda desperate last quarter bid by Old Para-dians and "hung-on" to win by twopoints (their own score for the quarter,in fact) .

Fawkner opened their account, andlifted themselves into seventh place withtheir big win over Coburg. Fawkner willbe looking forward to today's clash withCollegians . With Fawkner's renewedconfidence, the result may not be theforegone conclusion it seemed .

The other big match of the day willsee Old Haileyburians at home to OldMelburnians - another second versustop clash for the Section . Maybe thewilds of Keysborough will be Old Mel-burnians undoing - certainly conditionsdown there can be bleak !

Editorial cont. -In C Section last week St . Kilda

C.B.C .O.C . summarily disposed of joint-leaders Alphington, whilst Old BrightonGrammarians won comfortably overHampton Rovers . As the saying goes- "And then there were two" . Todaysees these two pitted against each other, the battle-ground will be to OldBrighton's advantage and come fiveo'clock tonight : "Then there was one ."- It takes a braver person than I(notably Jim Fidge) to predict who the"one" will be :

A .J .A.X, in third spot on percentagefrom Alphington, after their win overOld Carey last week will be eager toconvert this break to one of four pointsplus percentage when the two "A's"meet at Albert Park today . EquallyAlphington will be looking to re-assertthemselves as a major force in theSection again, the Brothers Rittermanwill be keen to do well both for A .J .A .X .today and to enhance their chances ofgaining final Interstate selection .

Old Xaverians capitalized on a threepoint lead at three-quarter time to scoretheir first for the season - over Kew,whilst Geelong also notched their firstwin - defeating Old Ivanhore Gram-marians by fifteen points .

Major upsets occurred in D Sectionlast round, with previously undefeatedWest Brunswick and Old Camber-well Grammarians going down andU .H .S .O.B. scoring its first win - overPower House .

State Bank converted a five point"orange-break" lead into a ten-point vic-tory over Elsternwick, and now seethemselves in second position (on percent-age).

• The 1977 E Section Grand-Finalreplay saw the result duplicated . Afterleading by five points into the last term,West Brunswick could only manage twogoals to Heatherton's five . Thus Heather-ton again emerged victorious.

After leading by only two points athalf-time St. Kevin's ran all over OldCamberwell to record a sixty-two pointwin in one of the day's major upsets .This indicates' that perhaps St . Kevin'sat home on their open, Burnley ground

Page 4

may still be a force to be reckoned with .The Power House "machine" as i t

has been termed faultered again lastweek, and on its home ground. Univer-sity High came from behind at halftime to win by three points and thusrecord their first win. The question is- are U.H.S .O.B. better than at firstthough - or are Power . House not sogood? (A poser for Norm to deliberateon over the coming weeks . )

At Western Oval, in "blustery" con-ditions the inconsistent, but more accu-rate Country Colleges recorded theirsecond win - this time over M .H.S .O .B .Maybe Norm Nugent equates with LouRichards where Country Colleges areconcerned . - Today may tell .

Whilst both still undefeated St . Bede'shave manage to wrest top spot awayfrom Bulleen-Templestowe each scoredby nearly one hundred points last week- over A.M.P. Society and A.N.Z.Bank respectively.

Old Geelong's defeat of LatrobeBlacks has seen them consolidate theirplace at the top, behind Beverley Hillswho scored the upset of the day overNorth Brunswick and thereby relegatingNorth to ninth .

Old Mentonians won convincingly"the battle of the zero" against Bruns-wick and have moved into eighth place.

Commonwealth Bank were a mitedisappointing against Thornbury -scoring only one goal after the firstquarter .

Equally disappointing, since the firstround, have been Clayton, who wentdown, again, this time to UniversityReds .

Therry scored by ninety seven pointsover National Bank whilst honours forthe day went to Footscray who emergedvictorious by twenty goals .

North Old Boys and Old Scotch stillreign supreme in Junior One - afterMonash University removed UniversityBlues from joint lead . Ormond consoli-dated their place with a strong winover St . Bernard's . Hampton Roversscored over the Blacks to record winnumber one and so join Ivanhoe.

"PRACTICE" WIN TO BULLEEN UNITED'

Bulleen United (F Grade) and Parkside ( BGrade) both faced byes last week, until apractice match was hurriedly organised betweenthe two clubs .

Bulleen were naturally skeptical of thevalue in such a game, but their skeptism soonturned to magnificent glory when they ran outvictors by 12 points .

Parkside held a 13 point lead at half timeafter some inaccurate kicking from Bulleenforwards . But in the second half Buileen'sgreater enthusiasm and will-to-win proved toomuch for the shocked Parkside players .

Naturally enough, spirits were very highafter the game where both sides enjoyed alonger than normal after-match drink.

The only glum part of the day was thenon-appearance of the pre-organised V.A .F.A .umpires .

Goalkickers for Bulleen United : Shinn 3,Morley 2, A . Divirgilio 2, R . Bryant 2, McColl,Lillie and Richardson . Best players were :Jenkins, D . Bryant, MacLeod, Richardson, R .Divirgilio and Lachmund .

The scores : Bulleen United 12 .20-92 -Parkside 11 .14-80 .

PREVI EWING TODAY'S GAMES

A SECTIO NFirst loss for De La Salle and another big

win for Old Scotch were the highlights ofRound 4 . De La faltered against St. Bernard'swho turned on an amazing reversal of formafter their dismal performance the previousweek . There was no such faltering though bypace-setters Old Scotch . They started slowlyagainst Blacks, but kicked 19 goals to 5 afterquarter time to take over top place from Uni .Blues.

Today's big game is the clash most followersof A Grade have been eagerly awaiting allseason . It sees Old Scotch at home to De LaSalle. This is the big test for Old Scotch . Ifthey win this one then they must become firmfavourites to emulate the Black's feat of 1974of winning the A Grade premiership in theirfirst year up from B Grade . De La will putmore pressure on Scotch than any other sidethey've met this season and it remains to beseen whether their skilful game will fall apartor not . De La will bounce back after their losslast week and Bernie Sheehy will be very keento bring Scotch down to earth . However, 1 thinkScotch will win . They have a tight backi!ne,high-scoring forward line and some prolifickick-getters in Marx, Tallent and Anderson . DeLa's strength is their backline, but I can't seethem holding Scotch to a losing score .

Every Blues/Blacks game is like a GrandFinal for those playing and today's encounterwill be no exception . These games are in-variably of a high standard and are renownedfor surprise results . On form one would haveto go for Blues . They have not lost a gameyet and are very keen to regain the top spotthey lost last week when they failed to presshome -their advantage against Ivanhoe . Theirforward line is functioning well, but their lackof ruck strength might prove costly, especiallyas Black's ruckman Peter Birch has not beenbeaten this year. Blacks will improve on lastweek's dismal showing, but I still think Blueswill win a desperate struggle .

Ormond play Ivanhoe at Elsternwick Park. Both sides were disappointing last week .Ormond expected to win at North, but gavethe home side too much start and were unableto peg them back . Ivanhoe started the seasonwell but have lost their last two. They arelacking the big men to counter Naylor andBourne and despite their pace and enthusiasmI can't see them downing Ormond .

If it wasn't for St . Be rn ard's I would beleading the tipsters' tally instead of languish-ing near the rear. They have been very Incon-sistent and are obviously having trouble moti-vating themselves after some years at the top .Today they are at home to Marcellin who hitrock bottom last week with a loss to Caulfield. They can only improve on that form but I haveto go for St . Berhard's to consolidate theirplace In the Four .

Page 6

North Old Boys finally broke the ice lastweek and today should make it two in a rowby beating Caulfield . Last week was a must forCaulfield and they responded well to the chal-lenge with a good win . They don't seem toplay as well away from home and they meet aNorth side determined to rise up the ladder .North to win .

This week's selections are - Old Scotch,Uni . Blues, Ormond, St. Bernard's and No rt hOld Boys - PETER BRUKNER .

B SECTION

As Brian Lauder was unable to make hisselections this week, "Ed" is going to "havea go" .

The first match of the day sees Old Haiiey-burians awaiting the arrival of Old Melburniansat the open spaces of Keysborough. It is'avital game for both (looking forward to Sep-tember), but the Cordner combination shouldbe able to nullify the home-ground advantageand so allow Old Melburnians to maintain theirunbeaten run .

Fawkner, fresh from last week's victory overCoburg, travel to the Harry Trott to do battlewith Collegians. Whilst Fawkner will be up onconfidence and Collegians' down (after theirrelatively poor display against O .M .'s lastweek), I feel that Collegians will be too strongand too desperate . Experience gained in thehigher grades should allow them to regroupsuccessfully. Fawkner are still gathering thisexperience - and eve ry game helps .

Old Paradlans should be too strong forCoburg - even at De Cherie Reserve . Coburgare in the "horrors" at the moment and mustbe looking desperately for a win . Their havingstruck the bottom of the ladder this week mayprovide some incentive - but the Bundooraboys will be equally determined to stay withinreach of the four . So it's Old Paradians to takethe points . (Sorry Norm, hope I don't "jinx"you! )

The final game for this round sees Parksidewelcome Old Trinity Grammarians . Swayed byBrian's faith in his club, and by the relativeladder positions of each, I see Parksideemerging with the points - and so cementingthe advantage gained from last week's bye .Their game against Bulieen United at leastprovided them with solid match practice (!f notwith a win) :

MonashBiues have the bye (let's hope theyuse it wisely - perhaps a game against theWhites, who have the F Section bye) .

SELECTIONS: Old Metburnians, Collegians,Old Paradians, Parkside - EDITOR (in lieu ofBrian Lauder).

PREVIEWS (cont)C SECTIO N

Only Old Brighton and St . Kilda remain un-defeated after four rounds, while further downthe list, Kew, Hampton Rovers, Geelong andOId,Xaverians all have managed one win andso head the luckless Old Carey . This year'sC Section is particularly even . However, thetop four - St . Kilda C .B .C.O .C ., Old BrightonGrammarians, A .J .A.X . and Alphington - havealready established themselves In "the four"and the task is going to be difficult for thelower teams to displace them .

Who will remain unbeaten after today's OldBrighton-St . Kilda clash ?

St . Kilda have White, whose duel withBrighton's Warnock will provide the highlight .Both teams have competent spearheads inDrinan (St . K .) and Priestley (O .B .) .

This is a ve ry hard one to pick : I leantowards Old Brighton . Their better rovers inShepherd and Jones, and the fact that they areplaying at the beach will narrowly give themthe points.

Old Ivanhoe played well, particularly in thethird quarter, last week, when they concen-trated on correct delivery - directed to ex-perienced full-forward Tim Robinson. Robinsonhas size on his side and his strong markingwill worry all opposing full-backs .

Hampton appear to have slipped, so I leantoward Old Ivanhoe on its home ground .

Old Carey won't be accomplished enoughto notch its first win over Old Xaverians, butyou can be sure that Carey will not surrenderthe four points without a mighty struggle .

Alphington slipped for the first time lastweek and are a trifle unfortunate to strikeA .J .A.X . today . However, if Alphington playsclose, it could reduce the effect of A .J .A .X .'s,paqy small players. Scores could be tight atthe final siren, but I favour A .J .A .X .

Geelong visit Kew, where it managed somebig wins four or five years ago - and so dis-pelled the legend that it never played well atVictoria Park .

Following its taste of victory last week,Geelong will be keen to reproduce that result .On the other hand, Kew will be keen to re-bound from last week's upset . I predict thatGeelong will be a shade too strong on the day .

SELECTIONS : Old Brighton Grammarians,Old Ivanhoe Grammarians, Old Xaverians,A .J .A.X ., Geelong - JIM FIDGE.

D SECTIO N

Last week's results, although disastrous toyour tipster's ego, have shown the overallevenness of the competition and that no gamecan be considered as a victory until the soundof the final siren .

Heatherton, enthused by two consecutivevictories, await Country Colleges, who musthave added confidence after last Saturday .Home ground advantage coupled with greaterconsistency on their forward line prompt me

to deny myself again and select Hestherton .(Sorry, Des and Matt .)

Melbourne High Old Boys now find them-selves trailing the competition . State Bank onthe other hand must be counting their assets .I predict the Bankers' overall strength, ledby stalwarts Roberts, Jeffery and Wynd, tohold out Melbourne High and carry themcloser to a finals berth .

University High School Old Boys reallysurprised last week. (Shades of their domin-ance over Power House a generation ago .)Today they will find Elsternwick a tough com-bination on the small No. 2 Oval . Elsternwickhave shown good form over recent weeks andI predict they will score victory No . 2 for1978 today .

Old Camberwell Grammarians await WestBrunswick. Both teams suffered defeat lastweek and each will be all-out for victory toremain in the competition vanguard . The OldGrammarians may be upset by "Magpie"determination but I believe the Grammarians'big men will generate enough drive to bringvictory to their side .

St . Kevin's began the season slowly buthave now responded to Alan Olle's persuasivepleadings and their victory last Saturday hadthe stamp of class . The much vaunted PowerHouse "machine" ground to a halt last week.Premierships are not won in March so "headmechanic" Michael Perry has the task oftuning his players back to winning form. Atthe risk of being wrong, I select St . Kevin's towin over Power House today .

SELECTIONS : Heatherton, State Bank,Eistemwick, Old Camberwell Grammarians, St .Kevin's Old Boys - NORM NUGENT.

E SECTIONMy loyalty would not let me be a "Jim

Fidge" so early in the season, and for thatreason only he is above me on the ladder, butas Jim says it is a long season and I will beafter his blood . It would appear his club maynot help him as much as mine will assist me .

Old Geelong at home to A.M .P. today shouldbe another victory for the Como Boys . OldGeelong are a very fit side and came homeconvincingly against the Blacks last week whenit was really needed. This Is a big Improve-ment as it has been their downfall in the past .

St . Bede's at home to Bulleen-Templestowewill be a real test of strength - both sidesbeing unbeaten until after today's match . Theyeach had convincing victories last Saturday andshould have finished up without too manybruises . This will be the match of the day, andI will say St. Bede's by a narrow margin .

Beverley Hills must have played very well toout-point North Brunswick last Saturday, per-haps North Brunswick were a bit bruised fromthe very tough game of the week before whenthey went down by a point . The A.N .Z. Bankboys will not be able to match Beverley Hills .

La Trobe Blacks will be too strong forOld Mentonians out at the University . Theynever gave in against Old Geelong last Satur-day and it was not till the last quarter that OldGeelong really got on top .

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - MAY 13, 1978 Page 7

PREVIEWS (cont)North Brunswick have let me down two

weeks in a row, but I think they will romphome against their neighbours Brunswick, thisweek .

SELECTIONS : Old Geelong, St . Bede's,Beverley Hills, La Trobe Blacks, North Bruns-wick - "NUGGET" STEPHENS .

F SECTION

Clayton at home to Bulleen United will berather close but I have a leaning to the homeside . Neither side has showed its real abilityas yet but the weeks are slipping by and theSection is settling down .

Uni. Reds are at home to CommonwealthBank, but this is a game where the homeground advantage would appear to have lessvalue than ability and dedication . The Bankersfor me. I noticed in last week's A .F . that aperson named Dick kicked four goals forCommonwealth against National Bank. Thatname was once an oft-occurring member ofNational Bank's best players, in fact it is onseveral V .A .F .A . fairest and best awards, whichbrings me to the next match on the pro-gramme, National Bank against the "Fitites" .The Bankers didn't fare too well against Therrylast Saturday but they should have enough ofthe necessary to handle the scholars .

Now for the hard one . Thornbury at home toTherry should tell us something . The Berrieshave height in the ruck and down the centrebut Therry have skill in plenty . It depends onwhether four games have enabled Therry todevelop sufficient team spirit and combinationto handle the two obstacles of height andhome ground . I'm inclined to favour the homeside on this occasion .

Monash Whites - the bye .WINNERS : Clayton, Commonwealth Bank,

National Bank, Thornbury - SYD WHITFIELD .P .S. : Norm Nugent gave himself away last

week by referring to "Predictions" . Must havebought a copy of "Old Moore's Almanac" .

JUNIOR SECTION 1

Round 4 produced a major upset whenpreviously undefeated University Blues wasdowned by Monash University .

Hampton Rovers had their first success forthe season leaving University Blacks andGeelong the only teams not to achieve a resultthis year .

Ormond proved too strong for St . Bernard'sO .C . whilst Old Scotch and North Old Boyscontinued on their winning way.

In the coming round North Melbourne O .B.meet Geelong. There seems to be little chanceof Geelong overcoming the undefeatedNortherners on current form .

The highlight of the round will be the clashbetween Old Scotch and Ormond . Scotch'sforwards should be too strong and will kick awinning score in what should be a high scoringgame .

St . Be rn ard's O .C . meet University Blues onthe eve of the University holidays . The Blues

Page 8

may be weakened by the loss of some of theirplayers and so I'll stick with St . Bernard's .

Hampton Rovers will be brimful of confi-dence after their first win, but Ivanhoe havebeen playing well even in defeat by the twotop sides and I feel they will be too consistentfor the Rovers .

University Blacks meet Monash Universityat home . The Monash side has picked up formin the past two weeks and should win againnext Saturday.

MY SELECTIONS : North O .B., Old Scotch,St . Bernard's, Ivanhoe, Monash University --fMCHAEL ARNOLD .

JUNIOR SECTION 2

This Section appears to be levelling itselfout, with De La as the undisputed leaders, closely followed by my horror team Kew, thenext five sides separated only by percentageand the remaining three sides each have onewin and three losses . Fawkner were successfullast week in erasing their minus from thepremiership table ,

De La Salle O.C. come up against M.H .S .Old Boys today and should have an easy winat home. As the scores for the M .H .S ./OldHaileybury game were unavailable for inclusionin the press it is difficult to make any com-ments on that game . The De La game lastweek was fraught with inaccuracy . Barrassidoes not want to talk .about a champion teamuntil they have won 14 or 15 in a row . Yourscribe will have De La in this category if theysurvive the forthcoming school vacation period .

Kew make the long trip to Keysborough tomeet the mediocre Old Haileyburians. Halley-bury are good at home but Kew had a greatwin over West Brunswick last week. My recordremains at 100% in being unable to "catch"the visitors, but I can assure you hat I am nottrying to attain champion status in this regard .With "tongue-in-cheek", Kew to win .

Fawkner had a good win last week overCaulfield Grammarians following their forfeitthe previous week and today travel to RoyalPark to meet West Brunswick. This should bea keenly contested game with both sides onone win each . The loser will probably havepossession of the wooden spoon for a weekor, more. West seem to be the more stableside and are my choice.

The battle between Caulfield Grammariansand Therry C .C.O .B. will no doubt be anothereven game in this round . Fellow scribe PeterBrukner describes Caulfield Seniors as a 5 goalbetter side at home and I believe that this isapplicable to all their sides. Therry werethrashed by 170 points at the hands of theCoburg small men and will be eager to makeamends this week . This game may well end ina draw, but I am going for Therry to win withthe last kick of the day .

The final game of the day sees OldParadians at home to Coburg. Both sideshave suffered defeats at the hands of OldHaileyburiens and De La. However, it wouldseem after last week that the Coburg machinehas started to work . I cannot see Paradianscoping with the small man game expertise ofCoburg and select the visitors to win .

SELECTIONS : Coburg, Therry, De La Salle,Kew, West Brunswick - PETER NATHAN .

GLOBE-TROTTING EDITORWhen last heard of, George McTaggart,

together with his wife Nancy and their sonPeter, was due to leave the "frozen wastes" ofnorthern Norway (inside the Arctic Cicie) .

From there, they were planning to travelaround the rest of Scandinavia and arrive inStuttgart (Germany) at the end of March . Aprilshould have seen them motoring generallysouth to reach Rome mid-month. From there itwas back to London in early May.

Before finally leaving Australian shores, heMcTaggart family did a quick "flit" aroundSouth-East Asia, taking in Singapore, Bangkokand Hong Kong -"just to break themselvesinto travelling" . (Sounds like a new pair ofboots! )

Australia was farewelled about Christmas1977, and a cold and wet London welcomedsome four weeks later. Sailing via the SuezCanal one apparently becomes adept at copingwith sudden weather changes - in George'swords :- "it was swimsuits to sweaters in onevery quick lesson" .

Their Asian tour and the trip to Londonwere both by sea and the early part of theirContinental tour by train . Trains in Norwaymust be a joy to travel on : as George putit:- "!t snowed all the way (almost a blizzard)but the train arrived at Oslo right on time -i's a habit they seem to have over here" .(That in itself seems enough to make the aver-age Melbourne "trainite" envious . )

Whilst "out-of-sight" the V .A .F .A. is not"out-of-mind" for the McTaggarts. Those atthe Presidents'/Secretarys'/ Members'/ FullertonTestimonial Dinner will recall apologies beingreceived from them - cabled from Helsinki(Finland) .

George and Nancy have also extended theirbest wishes to all clubs for a successful 1978season .

What I would really like to know, however- and so far, nobody is telling - just whatdo George and Nancy do on a Saturday nightnow? They must feel quite lost with no re-calcitrant clubs to pursue.

To George, Nancy and Peter, may I say -on behalf of all connected with the V.A .F .A .,that I hope you are having one "whale of atime" and "half your luck"!

- Jan Howar d

Commencing with the Juniors some10 years ago, Bob soon found his way intothe Seniors and since then has held downmany important positions in defence, mainlyfull back, with an occasional run on the ball .He played in the Club's "A" Section premier-ship team in 1970 and was captain for the1976 season . A big, fearless, straight aheadplayer, his fair and manly approach to foot-ball has made many friends for him inamateur ranks . While still a player he hashad a big hand in the club's administrationbeing Secretary for the past 2 years. Businesscommitments forced his resignation from thecommittee this season but he has made hisservices available in an advisory capacity andthese are now being freely used and aregreatly valued by the club. All members andsupporters greatly admire this popular club-man and hope that he will be around the clubfor many years to come .

Field, that elusive guy who has really comeof age this year . In his 6 years with the club"Flash" has been a regular player in ourReserves, but this year Robbie has put alot into his game and has come up trumps inall aspects . There mightn't be much of himbut, boy, can he run . Ivanhoe are looking forbig things from the players this year and"Flash" is one of the shining lights in thisdepartment, so keep it up, Rob, and goodluck on your 100th game today .100 GAMES TO U.H.S .O .B . VICE-CAPTAIN

David Blake has been at U.H.S .O.B. since1971, where he played in the successful Under17 premiership team . David is well known forhis high marking and his terrific team spirit. This year, David is vice-captain of the seniorteam, and so far has struck top form - goodluck for the future.

It's a small stepping stone in Peter Fraser'sfootball career when he today plays his 50th

Page 16

senior game for the Commonwealth Bank, but,oh!, how valuable some of those games havebeen . . He is fast, elusive and high marking

_

as many opponents will testify. Well done,Pete, and may we see many more games fromYou in the future.

Congratulations to Billy Burrows who playedhis 50th game for Thornbury last week . Billhas always been a very consistent player, inthe forward line, and is looking forward towinning his fourth leading goalkicking awardin a row for Thornbury this season. I amsure with his great determination he will doit . Good luck, Bill, and hope to see youplaying your 100 soon - from everyone atThornbury .

Brian Haratsis recently played his 50th gamefor North Old Boys. Beginning in the Under19's he fought his way up through the Re-serves to be a regular Senior player . He isvery speedy, a clever ball handler and goodkick. And with his hair band everyone seeshim . North looks forward to congratulatim, him for his 100th game in a few short years.

CAULFIELD APPRECIATIONHave courage Gordon Cameron and David

Labram . Suggest as Caulfield Grammarianstroop into the clubhouse and whether you bea tired player, a harassed official, a Puzzledselector, the press correspondent noting the"whoers and goers" or. even a past playerbludging a hot shower after a run around thelake, their advice is always accepted. Thesetwo "unsung and often maligned" club officials,Gordon, Club Treasurer, and David, ClubCatering Officer, do a mighty job after train-ing nights, home game matches and duringclub functions . Their duties are quietly andefficiently performed despite the sometimes in-sulting comments and innuendoes from themotley mob on the other side of the servery .Joking aside, all club members and support-ers whilst seldom expressing their thanks forsuch courteous service, secretly appreciate thefact that they would be hard to replace .Thanks again Gordon and David for a jobbeing well done.

JUNIOR'S COACHCaulfield Grammarians are greatly indebted

to George Voyage for his services to the clubboth as a committeeman and as coach of theJuniors . A constructive and effective playerhimself but one who has had more than hisfair share of injuries during his career, George, despite his personal desire to continue play-ing, was finally persuaded to again coach theJuniors after his return from an overseasbusiness trip last year . Now keenly interestedin this job, lie has a good influence on hisplayers who greatly respect him for his dedica-tion and sincerity of purpose. As a clubadministrator he is factual in debate and hisopinions are always given careful considera-tion . Only a young man, the club looks for-ward to having his valued services for manyyears to come.

Squad training commenced on G'Jednesdav10th May, at Caulfield Grammarians Oval 3 ;A .J.A .X . Oval 2, Albert Park, under the respec-tive coaches (Peter O'Donohue and BernieSheehy) . Sunday morning training Will be heldat V .A.F.A . Headquarters, Elsternwick Park from10 .30 a.m . commencing tomorrow .

Supporters of various clubs are asked tosupport the Sunday training sessions to lendatmosphere to the occasion and generally showinterest for the benefit of those players strivingfor final selection . The V.A.F.A . Social Com-mittee will provide suitable refreshments andhope to create a"pieasant Sunday morning"atmosphere .

To officials of ,clubs who nominated playersbut who were not named in the squad, I wouidlike you to attend any training session and seefor yourselves the standard required . No onedenies that your nominee is not a good feet-bailer but it is a fact of life that there areothers around who are a fraction better andmore used to pressure situations which theselectors must take into account .

At present there are players in the squadwho must produce a lot more otherwise theywill not last . I am sure that there will beplayers added to the squad due to injuries etc .For example, Peter McDonnell (De La Salle),Ed Cordner (La Trobe) and Mike Cooke (OldCarey), were all last minute inclusions in 1977and all performed well.

So the name of the game is to keep tryingand never give up hope . Remember the oldadage - "A winner never quits and a quitternever wins". ,

PETER O'DONOHUEState Coach, V.A .F .A ., 1978
