Unit 1. Lab 1. Preparing a Virtual Workstation Image

Windows 7 Virtual Machine “Keyless” Installation and Re-arm Process

Purpose:This section describes the reason for and the procedure to use the “keyless” installation for Windows 7 Professional applicable to our lab environment for IT109/NT1230, and to use the “Re-arm” procedure to extend the trial period to meet our curriculum needs.

Background:In installing Windows 7 Professional into a virtual machine in the VMware Player for the labs in our lab environment, if the Product Key for Windows 7 Professional is applied and activated during or at the end of the installation, the installed virtual machine will be authorized to launch only from the physical computer from which it was installed, as Microsoft registers the product key to associate with the hardware identity of the physical computer in their antipiracy database during the activation process. Subsequently, if the virtual machine is launched from a different computer, Microsoft will deem this as a pirated instance and the WGA (Windows Genuine Advantage) warning will be triggered.

In order for our students to be able to launch the Windows 7 virtual machine on any computer in any of our labs without triggering the WGA antipiracy warning, our curriculum defines a “keyless” installation of Windows 7 Professional so that the installed instance will automatically kick into the trial mode with 30 days of functionality. Prior to the expiration of the 30-day period, the curriculum also defines a “Re-arm” procedure to extend the time for the trial version. This way the installed virtual machine of Windows 7 Professional will be used on any computer without triggering the WGA warning.

1. Installing Windows 7 without the Product Key to Kick into the Trial VersionJust follow the instruction in Step 3 on Page 3 of the Lab Manual for NT1230 “Skip the Product Key and ….” This will automatically kick the installed instance into trial mode with a 30-day functional period.

2. Managing the Trial Period by Re-Arming the 30 Day Period It appears that the original 30 day period can be rearmed twice and possibly three times.

1) Launch the virtual machine of Windows 7 and click the Start button in the bottom left corner.2) Right-click on Computer.3) In the right-click drop-down-window, select Properties. Scroll down as necessary and view

“Windows Activation: 30 days”. It is recommended to plan to “re-arm” the trial period as close to the end of the 30-day period (0 days) as possible.

4) To re-arm, click the Start button in the bottom left corner and click on All Programs.5) Click on Accessories. Then right-click on Command Prompt. In the right-click drop-down-menu,

select Run as Administrator. 6) At the command prompt, type: slmgr.vbs –rearm and hit the Enter key. 7) If all goes well, your prompt will return immediately and a popup window will inform you to reboot

Windows 7.8) Upon rebooting, verify the re-arm extended your trial period by re-visiting Window’s Activation

information described in Step 3 above.

Unit 1. Exercise 1. Upgrading

Assignment RequirementsConsider the following email:

----FROM: Valerie Bernier, DentistRE: Can I upgrade the office? Hi—

I heard from my friend, Bob S., that you have a great deal of knowledge about this, so I’m wondering if you will act as a consultant for me. I have a dental office in town, and we’re running eight Windows XP workstations and a single server running Windows Server 2003.

The person who installed this told me that the server is functioning as a domain controller and the eight workstations are members of an Active Directory domain. The workstations each have 1 gigabyte of memory and a 1.8-gigahertz processor. The video cards support DirectX 9 and have WDDM drivers available from the manufacturer. Three of the workstations are located in a warehouse across town, while the other five in the main office run Microsoft Office applications almost exclusively. The server is also located in the main office. There have been problems with sluggish performance on the warehouse computers when they attempt to access server files.

My question is—can I upgrade? If so, what edition should I use? Thank you for help!

Unit 7. Lab 1. Preparing a Virtual Windows Server 2008 Image

Installing and Re-arming Windows Server 2008

The Windows Server 2008 Evaluation Edition may be installed without activation, and it may be evaluated for 60 days. Additionally, the 60-day evaluation period may be reset (re-armed) three times. This action extends the original 60-day evaluation period by up to 180 days for a total possible evaluation time of 240 days.

How to Install Windows Server 2008 without Activating It

1. Run the Windows Server 2008 Setup program.2. When you are prompted to enter the product key for activation, do not enter a key. Click No when

Setup asks you to confirm your selection.3. You may be prompted to select the edition of Windows Server 2008 that you want to evaluate.

Select the edition you want to install.4. When you are prompted, read the evaluation terms in the Microsoft Software License Terms, and

then accept the terms.5. When the Windows Server 2008 Setup program is finished, your initial 60-day evaluation period

starts. To check the time that is left on your current evaluation period, run the slmgr.vbs script that is in the System32 folder. Use the –dli switch to run this script. The slmgr.vbs –dli command displays the number of days that are left in the current 60-day evaluation period.

How to Re-arm the Evaluation Period

When the initial 60-day evaluation period nears its end, you can run the slmgr.vbs script to rest the evaluation period. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, and then click Command Prompt.2. Type slmge.vbs –dli, and then press the Enter key to check the current status of your

evaluation period.3. To reset the evaluation period, type slmgr.vbs –rearm, and then press the Enter key.4. Restart the computer.

This resets the evaluation period to 60 days.

RE: Pandemonium in the US Office.

Hello most esteemed US computer guru,

Thank you for helping set up our new US office. There are some additional issues that we need help addressing.

Our data center in Timbuktu is very well disciplined. They know not to put on unwarranted software. They work on their computers during office hours, which are 8 to 5, and then they go home. In the US they work all kinds of strange hours – many think they are mushrooms and must work only in the dark. The Internet is now as slow as travel by camel. It should not be that way.

It seems like we have wild, wild west cowboys who work in the US office. They have music blaring out of every cubicle. They have new screen savers every week. The new computers are very slow and they are less than a month old. No one knows why.

What can you suggest to help me?

Thank you!

RE: Printers are multiplying like rabbits.

Hello most esteemed US computer guru,

Thank you for setting up our branch office in the US. However, our data center has a problem. It seems that everyone there is in love with Office Depot and has a printer on their desk. We employ 150 people. This is too many printers. The ink is so expensive. I hear many people come in of Saturdays and print baseball schedules, shopping list, and photos of their family.

What can you suggest to help me?

Thank you!

RE: Confusion over where to find files.

Hello most esteemed US computer guru,

Thank you for your help in controlling our printers in the US office. Many have found a new home with employees who decided to buy them from the company.

Unfortunately, our data center in Timbuktu does not communicate well to the US office and vice versa. Files here are not used in the US office and, likewise, here we do not understand what files they are using in the US. There seem to be the same files everywhere but no one knows why. More file storage will be needed soon.

We cannot afford too many new expenses at this time.

Unit 10. Assignment 1. Backup Criteria

Assignment Requirements

Choose a hypothetical company, and develop the criteria for a backup plan. You will need to

make many assumptions. List those here.

What should a company back up? What would be the rotation of data? Partial, Full? How many data sets would you have? What

kind of history is necessary? What is this dependent upon? When should the data be taken offsite? How much data would be lost if the current set in the server room were destroyed? How long could they be down? What is the most data they could lose electronically and still be

able to recover the rest by paper? What time frame would it take for a restore? Detailed procedures need to be in place so nothing

is left to chance. How would you develop these and test the data restore? Will the backup media be tested for corruption? Test restores are a must to check for valid data.

Every level of the backup should be tested and verified. What will the procedures be? Who is responsible for the backup and more importantly the restore? How would you determine

this?

Submission RequirementsDescribe the company and answer the questions thoroughly and completely. Use full sentences and

justify your answers.

Self-Assessment ChecklistI described the hypothetical company.

I answered all of the questions above and justified my reasoning.

RE: Burning Smell in the server room in the US office.

Hello most esteemed US computer guru,

While visiting the US Office I noticed that there was a somewhat disconcerting smell in the server room. It reminded me of my uncle's cooking – somewhat burnt. I am concerned that the employees are not being responsible and having too many of their barbecue parties since we turned off their streaming Internet music to their cubicles. They swear by the Curley's barbecue sauce but I am not a fan.

We are using tape backup in the server room. Could the barbecue smoke affect the tapes? I am concerned because all of our backup tapes are kept in that room.

What would you suggest to take make sure the tapes are not affected by the smoke?

Thank you again for you kind attention to this matter.

Yours truly, Rebop Pakulah
