• In this presentation I will be looking at representation and identity. I will be looking at these concepts as I will be looking at how people react to my dog due to the image she is given due to her breed, as well as how having a breed that has a strong image can cause her to have a more powerful effect on peoples view towards her behaviour.

• Most of the more powerful breeds are shown as aggressive and dangerous due to the power of the bite.

• The most common misconception of breeds are that those that are protective and have large levels of energy are dangerous where as the truth is the smaller breeds have a more aggressive nature and are more likely to bite.

• It’s due to the damage inflicted that the smaller breeds have a smaller number of recorded dog attacks as the individual over looks the behaviour.

• The record attacks on children are by breeds that are known to interact well with children and have calm temperaments due to this the individuals tend to over look any aggressive behaviour.

• Originally bred to be a guard dog, the Doberman Pinscher makes a protective family pet. (Sometimes, due to their somewhat erroneous reputation, the mere presence of a Doberman is sufficient deterrent to evildoers.) However, a Doberman Pinscher in a loving, stable environment is also a loving, stable dog, and an obedient and loyal companion. A Doberman is a people dog and will show you unflinching devotion. He will need to be by your side. They are incredibly intelligent, perceptive, intuitive, and sensitive, all of which makes them highly trainable.

• However, they require you to be a firm pack leader, or they will assume the role. A Doberman will need to be obedience trained. The Doberman Pinscher is a versatile breed: family dog, agility champion, therapy``` dog, seeing eye dog, police dog. They are used to being active. They are fearless, outgoing, and up for anything, anytime. They need vigorous exercise every day and they need to be mentally stimulated. Dobermans do best when they have a job to do.

• A Doberman will be lovey-dovey with you on the couch, but will be reserved with strangers. They have a natural ability to evaluate a situation and determine whether or not their family is being threatened. The Doberman loves his children and will be protective of them. Dobermans are prone to behavior issues because they are so intelligent and energetic, but a Doberman who is provided with exercise, care, attention, and training should be a perfect gentleman in the home. You just need to have the time and be able to make the commitment.

Using Rogers circle I can show that the public self is the image I show everyone as a dog owner. The part that people see shows this a powerful dog and her owner. The private self shows those who know me and my dog see a cuddly dog with a big bark and her friendly owner and the core self would be the personal view I have of me and my dog which is that she isn’t my dog but more like a sister and a friend as well as the view of the family as they understand the behaviour of our dog Cindy and how to interpret her behaviour.

Someone would also look at the body language of the dog to perceive her emotions to guess how she will behave. Looking at a dogs gaze you can determent if she feels threatened or if she will behave aggressively. The common behaviour of an aggressive dog is head low with a steady gaze and if they feel threatened they will raise their hackles and bear their teeth. The warning if a dog will attack can be over looked due to the lack of knowledge on the breed and behaviour and also the belief that the dog hasn’t behaved aggressively before so they think the dog wont act aggressively now.

Looking at this film you can see she is not acting aggressively however her bark still sounds deep and would scare some people if they couldn’t see Cindy’s behaviour as they cant understand the information given if they have no observation to reflect back to the sounds they hear.

This picture shows Cindy bearing her teeth, the action is not aggressive but can be seen as threatening but in this example she is sniffing the air causing the understanding of the text to be altered by a frame.
