SRI SARADA NAVARATHRI MAHOTSAVAM

25.9.2014 – 4.10.2014

Navarathri signifies the triumph of good, of piety and devotion over all evil forces.“During Navarathri, we perform puja to Durga Parameswari, the Parasakthi, Mahalakshmi and Saraswati. Whether we talk of them as three murthis or thirty three crores murthis, all of them are only one Parashakthi. It is this truth that is conveyed by Lalitha Sahasranamam while describing the Para Devata (the supreme Devatha) as : She is the one who creates (Srushti Karthari – Brahma Rupa), She is the one who carries our destruction – Samharam. (Samharini – Rudra Rupa). The same Sakthi which is ‘Lalithai’ and ‘Durgai’ is also Mahalakshmi and Saraswati. In Lakhsmi Ashtotram, the prayer “Brahma Vishnu Sivathmikayai Namah” occurs. In Saraswati Ashtotram too, Brahma Vishnu Sivathimikayayi Namah occurs. These make it clear to us that it is only Sakthi that creates, protects and destroys. Only one Parasakthi wears different make ups and carries out different functions. As Durga, she gives valour, Sakthi, as Mahalakshmi she gives wealth and as Saraswati, she gives jnana”.

-HH Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswathi Mahaswamigal

The Sri Kanchi Mahaswami Vidya Mandir is a manifestation of the desire of the Sage of Kanchi to evolve an education system that combines the best of all. The Vidya Mandir is a bold experiment to demonstrate that the study of Vedas and pursuit of secular education need not be in conflict. Constructed at a cost of about Rs. 50 crores excluding the land donated by the Kanchi Mutt, the Vidya Mandir is set amidst serene surroundings at Rajakilpakkam, Tambaram East, Chennai. Spread over more than 5 acres of prime land, the Vidya Mandir has a CBSE School, Veda Patashala, a Mahaswami Museum and three temples and a memorial for Bharat Ratna Dr. M. S. Subbulakshmi. It was inaugurated by their Holinesses Jagadguru Sri Jayendra Saraswati Swamigal and Sri. Sankara Vijayendra Saraswati Swamigal on 4th June 2010. The Mahakumbabishekam of Devi Kamakshi Temple and other temples in the campus were performed at the holy hands of the Jagadgurus.

Chennites are distinctly fortunate that their Holinesses have consented to celebrate the Shravana Navarathri Mahotsavam

in our Sri. Kanchi Mahaswami Vidya Mandir campus between 25th September and 4th October 2014. After a gap of 12 years (last performed in 2002) the Sankaracharyas are performing Navarathri in Chennai. Special Japas, Parayanams and Homams would be performed during this period for the welfare of humanity at large. The trikala Sri. Maha Tripurasundari Sametha Sri. Chandramouleeswara Swami Puja, Abhishekams, Vishesha Alankarams, cultural programmes, a Grand Kolu and a Sahasra Chandi Mahayagnam conducted under the guidance of Br. Sri. Dinakara Sharma of Kumbakonam are but a few highlights of the Navarathri festival. During the nine days of worship, the Goddess would be adorned with special Alankarams on each day. Devotees are requested to have darshan of the Goddess, the Sages of Kanchi and be beneficiaries of their blessings. The Sri. Kanchi Mahaswami Trust solicits generous contributions from the devotees for conducting the Navarathri festival. May the presiding deity of the Vidya Mandir, the Mahaperiyaval of Kanchi and the Supreme Mother shed their grace on all of us.

Thiru Villaku PujaA special Thiru Villaku Puja has been organized during the Navarathri festival on Friday, 26th September 2014 at 6.00 p.m. for universal peace, harmony and prosperity. Participation restricted to would be 3 x 108 = 324.

For participation, please contact Mr. V. Sethuraman (Tel. No. 09500133590) and/or Trust office (Tel No. 044-22280315/22282268). The participants shall bring alongwith them a Villakku for the Puja. Oil, thread and flowers would be provided by the Vidya Mandir. Manjal Kumkumam would be given to Sumangalees between 6.00 and 8.00 p.m. on that day.

Sahasra Chandi MahayagnamWidely known and revered as Devimahatmyam (Glory of Divine Mother) this cosmic hymn is presented to the world in a dialogue form between Markandeya and Kroshtuki in the Markandeya Puranam. Though the great work was not authored by the Maharshi himself, it has simply originated from time immemorial and has been handed down over thousands of generations as is the case with Vedas.

“Yado vedo dhynadhirhi thadath sapthashathi smrutha“ says Bhuvaneswari Samhitha.

Sapthasathi has its main theme centered around The Supreme Shakthi and elaborates on the worship of the Divine Mother. As propounded by the Tantra “Sakthi is the origin and source of all.

“Shivashakthya yukto yadibhavathi shaktaha prabhavithum.”

Such is the greatness of Amba, the Lokamatha that Adi Sankara in the opening verse of Soundarya Lahari says that one needs to have a lot of merit accumulated to worship Her.

“Twam prnanthum stothram va katham akruthapunya prabhavithi.”

The Scipture Sapthasathy offers 700 valuable slokas divided into 3 episodes covering 13 chapters dealing with 4 incarnations of mother Maheswari, Mahakali, Mahalakshmi, Mahasaraswathy expressed as Kriyashakti, Icchashakti, Ghnyanashakti” etc. Chandipath is recognised as a jewel of sruthis and a great Sadhana Sasthra, which has to be recited with great devotion

and discipline in the method our tradition has prescribed.

“Yatha ashwamedha krathushu devanam cha yatha hari Sthavanamapi sarvesham thathasapthashathistavaha”

Fulfilment of Sahasra Chandi Maha Yagam accordingly calls for such recitations for 1000 times to be followed by Prayoga Homam thereafter.

Sahasrachandi is performed to invoke the potential force of Shakthi to promote tranquility, happiness and general welfare in the society, warding off calamities of all kinds.

The universe is dependent on Her and seeks Her blessings even when they are devoid of desires.

“Janani jagatham swalpe kamepyayam thvayilambatayPurabhithabaley madhye kamepyam thvayilambatayBhahulakaruney shreshtey kamepyam thvayilambatayBhagavathiparey veethey kamepyam thvayilambatay”

When she is worshipped and propitiated she resides in the house of Her devotees as Lakshmi, the presiding deity of prosperity.

“Lakshmi Vridhi Pradha Grihe”, as the script says,“Yadadi vitham puthramascha mathim dharmagathim shubham.”

Propitiated, the devotee receives enough wealth, good progeny, dharmic intellect and a very auspicious life here and hereafter.

Sahasra Chandi would be performed between 25th September and 4th October 2014 under the guidance of Br. Sri. Dinakara Sharma of Kumbakonam.
