Kids love to dress up as their favorite characters at Halloween, but these days you might not feel comfortable letting them out and about to go Trick or Treating. Why not do something a little different this year and let your kids invite

their friends over for a Halloween Party? They can all get dressed up and enjoy some spooky fun in the safety of your home. for children

1. the not so sPooKy halloween Parade

The little ones will want to show off their costumes so put on some mussy and have the kids put on a Halloween costume parade. Get them to do their best dance moves to the music and ensure the adults whoop, cheer, and look suitable spooked!

2. the tricK or treat bonanza Cut up some paper strips and on

half of them write the word “treat”, on the others write out a number of tricks, such as “hop on one leg”, “growl like a lion” or “sing their favorite song”.

Put all of the paper pieces into a hat or a pillowcase and hide some sweets and candies around the room.

At the party ask each child to draw a piece of paper from the hat. They then have to perform the trick or search for the treats.

Halloween party games

Here are some ideas for party games and Halloween craft activities to keep them entertained.

Halloween craft ideas

1. not so sPooKy halloween MasK MaKinG

Have a supply of white paper plates, glue, ribbons, felt pens and other craft items ready and ask the kids to make their own masks. They can design them to be as fun or as spooky as they like.

When everyone is done with their creations pierce a hole in each side of the plate and attach a piece of elastic so the kids can wear their masks, and pose for a group photo-graph!

2. the Great halloween loot collection

Kids love to take loot bags home from parties so let them decorate their own bags. You’ll need the same craft supplies as for the mask mak-ing, but this time they’ll need brown paper bags to decorate.

When the decorating is complete let the children go back to playing and fill the loot bags with candy and Halloween themed treats, when the party is over they can take their loot bags home.

When the kids have run off all their energy on the party games have them sit around the table for some quiet craft time. Here are some ideas to get you started:

why is it called halloween? There are many different thoughts

about the origins of Halloween, but the one thing people do agree on is that it’s more about harvesting than horror.

The Celts are said to have started this annual tradition because they celebrated their new year on Novem-ber 1 to mark the end of the sum-mer and the start of the long dark, cold winter. They staged a harvest festival called Samhain to protect themselves and their crops from the

winter ahead. The name Halloween didn’t come

about until much later when in the 800s Pope Boniface IV named November 1 All Saints’ Day or All-Hallows Day. This day was to honour those people who had died for their Christian beliefs.

Before too long people started referring to the night before as All-Hallows Eve, and then eventually Halloween.

Did you know that Halloween is America’s second big-gest commercial holiday? October 31 is now a day for dressing up in costumes, going to parties and eating candy, but Halloween is an ancient tradition

that started long before costumes and candy corn were even invented!

The Haunted History of

halloweenwhy do we tricK or treat?

In the early days of All Saint’s Day celebrations in England families would have parades and festivities. Poor people would beg for food and they would be given Soul Cakes if they promised to pray for the family’s

dead relatives. After a time this became a tradi-

tion in itself and children would “go a souling”, visiting houses in the neighbourhood and being rewarded with food and money.

what about the halloween costuMes? Hundreds of years ago it was be-

lieved that ghosts roamed the streets on Halloween so people would wear masks when they left their houses to fool the ghosts into thinking that they were spirits too.

People would also place bowls of food outside their houses to satisfy the ghosts and stop them from enter-

ing the house. As centuries passed these two

traditions of costumes and tick or treating have combined and today children wear costumes for fun and eat the candies that are left out, and no one really worries about the ghosts anymore!

what’s the story behind the JacK-o’-lantern?

There is an old Irish myth that says that an old trickster called Stingy Jack was not allowed to enter heaven or hell because of the trickery he had played while he was alive. The devil gave Jack a glowing piece of coal and a hollowed out turnip so that he could find his way in the dark, and the legend suggests that Jack has been roaming the earth ever since.

The Irish named the ghostly wandered Jack of the Lantern which over time became Jack-o’-Lantern.

Scottish and Irish children would recreate the lantern with a turnip and a candle and use it to scare away spirits like Stingy Jack.

This tradition continued for many years until European immigrants arrived in America and saw that pumpkins were much better because of the bright orange colour and soft insides. Today the turnips have been abandoned and people across the world carve faces into pumpkins on Halloween.

breast cancer:Top Things every

woman should Know

Breast cancer is a reality many women will have to deal with. Statistics show that one woman out of nine will develop breast cancer in her life. Whether it be a dear friend, a close family member or herself, every woman

will be touched by breast cancer in one way or the other. Breast cancer accounts for about 30% of all cancers.

Every woman should be aware of the risk factors and change those she can to lower her risk of develop-ing breast cancer in her life.

Women who are not active physically, smoke or consume a lot of alcohol are at higher risk to develop breast cancer.

Women who have their first child at a later age or have never given birth are at higher risk to develop breast cancer.

Women who had their first period at an earlier age (less than 12 years old) are at higher risk for breast cancer.

Woman who have close family members who had develop breast cancer are at higher risk for them-selves.

Women who are older. The further a woman advances in life, the higher her probability of developing breast cancer.

Women who experience a late menopause (after 55 years old) have an increase risk of developing breast cancer.

There is hope however and certain measures have proven to help reduce the risk of developing breast cancer for a woman. It is recom-mended to exercise regularly, lose any excess weight, lower alcohol consumption

and stop smoking. It is also proven that women who breastfeed their babies are at lower risks to develop breast cancer.

Certain measures, by finding breast cancer at an earlier stage can lower the complication rate and morbidity associated with this condi-tion. The two most recommended measures are to do a mammogram exam every two years after the age of 50 (or earlier if a woman has risk factors) and doing a breast self-examination. It is also recommended for a woman to visit her doctor regu-larly. One has to know that about two thirds of breast tumours are found by the woman herself upon doing her self-examination.

Many organizations and industries have joined forces to push back breast cancer and one can only encourage them by donating time or money for this worthy cause. There are many researches on breast cancer conducted worldwide and it is expected that the near future will see the decline of this devastating affliction.

In the US we tipped more than $14 billion in 2007, and that’s just the figure reported to the IRS.

Restaurant tipping is com¬monplace, generally 15% of the bill (excluding tax) for acceptable service, and 20% for superior service.

The question being asked by some is, “Why not in¬crease the price of the meal and pass it on to the server?”

Servers makes less than minimum wage… much less, some as little $2 an hour.

The word “TIP” means To Insure Promptness.

Grammar aside, tipping has be-come a reflection of our need to be outgoing and generous, with a slant toward neurotic and guilty.

Americans also tip hair¬dressers, taxi drivers, park¬ing valets, bar-tenders and massage therapists.

To Make Your Halloween spectacular

October 2011 27

Want to wow family and friends’ this Halloween? The trick here actually is to turn familiar food into a creepy creation yet still retaining its taste.

Using food coloring adds a fun and festive mood to ordinary foods, perfect for the Halloween. Cooking up Halloween party food recipes is not at all difficult. Whether you’re hosting a kiddie Halloween party or an eerie night for adults, the last thing you want is to bore your party guests with the same old treats.

Remember that celebrating the Halloween should be done the way it really should be: scary, spooky and mysterious. So how exactly can you make guests drool in the mouth on your party?

To begin with, start with exciting beverages for all ages. Give a little kick to your Halloween drinks by decorating it. For example, you can buy small plastic creepy crawlies like spiders, beetles or worms and top it on your drink. You can also put them in an ice cube container after filling it with water and then freezing them.

Serve it with drinks and your guests can actually see the spider through the ice cube. Make your par-ty guests drink ‘dirty water’ too. How to do that? Just add sherbet to your lemonade. When mixed with regular lemonade, it turns into a grayish-brown color, much like dirty water. Moreover, add red food coloring to smoothies and you instantly have a drink that looks like real blood.

Now let’s move on to snacks and other Halloween party food. Perhaps the easiest way to bring out some spookiness to your treats is by mak-ing slimy jello. Depending on the kind of spook you want, you can go for popular Halloween colors such as green for goo, black for darkness or red for blood. Serve ‘brain matter’ using green jello or solidified blood with the red variety.

If you opt for another treat, you can never go wrong with cupcakes and decorate them with funky frostings

Page 28: katy cuisine october 2011 lo res single pages

or bake cookies and top them with edible decora-tions. Always make your decorations edible as much as possible. You don’t want to risk your party guests’ safety, es-pecially curious kids who practically put just about anything in their mouths.

You can also surprise your guests with red, peeled grapes. How this works? Have them close their eyes and make them put their hands in the bowl. (Their hands must be clean, of course). With-out saying to them what it is, tell them to just eat it. When it touches their mouth, tell them it’s animal eyeballs! Just for the fun of it! You’re bound to have a spooky night that’s going to scare up a lot of raves from your guests!

1 choose your halloween candy wisely

The first place to start is with the Halloween candy, here you need to be thinking about the safety of your children as well as the environment. Try and go for organic treats and candies that aren’t stuffed full of artificial ingredients. A trip to your lo-cal health food store should present you with a wide number of options. Of course you could also start a new Halloween tradition and bake the treats yourself. The kids will have great fun helping you to bake and decorate Halloween cakes and cook-ies. Just make sure you have enough to go around when word gets out to those trick or treaters!

2 be creative with your decorations

Eco friendly decorations are so much more fun than store bought ones. Leave the plastic decorations on the shelf and opt instead for the more natural look. You can decorate your home with pumpkins, apples, leaves and candles. A little imagi-

nation is all you need to give your home the Halloween wow factor! If you are hosting a party then stick to reusable plates and cutlery instead of throw away items so that you can do what is best for the environment. If you are worried about using your best crockery pick up some cheap plates from the local dollar store, you can use them for other occasions such as Christmas so they’ll work out cheaper than disposable items in the end.

3 recycle your halloween costuMes

No one wants to wear the same old Halloween costume year after year, but buying new costumes isn’t very eco friendly. Instead of buying new why not see if you can swap costumes with friends and family. Or take your old costumes and turn them into something new. You can re-use parts of old costumes and pick up new items from charity and thrift stores to create a wonderful unique Halloween costume that your friends will envy.

Kids and adults love Halloween, there is just something fun about the spooky decorations, costumes and candy. But the downside is a lot of waste, luckily it is possible to have a green Halloween with just a few eco friendly tips and some forward planning on your behalf.

Colourful Waterplay Now here’s one of those activities for kids that is fun but

a bit messy so kids must play it outdoor with an apron. Head outside with bottles of water and a variety of food colorings. Then let your kids mix and match the colors until everyone has the same uniform color in each bottle.

Bookworms If you’re thinking of activi-ties for kids that are not only fun but also enrich-ing, then consider reading books to them. And yes, books aren’t just read in your bedroom. A shaded part in your yard can be a perfect place to enjoy a book with your child. Spread a rug and take out those books.

Be Sandy Let your little ones go wild in their imagination by making anything such as pizza, cake and even castles using sands. Just supply them with small buckets, your old kitch-en utensils, and biscuit cutters. This is indeed one of those activities for kids that can bring out the best in them.

Hidey-Hole And when you think you’re running out of ideas of fun activities for kids, here’s one you should really try make an outdoor home using a sheet and some chairs.

Let Your Young Artist Shine Make the most out of a sunny day, by setting a table outside. Next, arrange an easel, spread the cray-ons, the glitter glue and encourage your kids to be crafty.

My list of fun activities for kids ends here. Actually, the list can be endless if you just add your own activities in this list or even make your own variations. What is most important is that you and your kids will have fun!

GreenHalloween4 reusable halloween loot baGs

If you’re heading out trick or treating then you will need a loot bag to carry all of the treats and candies you’ll collect. Avoid the plastic bags that most stores have to offer and instead opt for a canvas bag that you can use for years to come. You can have some great family fun if you buy some plain canvas bags and use your craft supplies to decorate them in a spooky fashion.

5 after the halloween fun is over

To make sure your Halloween is really eco friendly you need to keep thinking green even after the Holiday has finished. Don’t just throw everything away, you can use that pumpkin for compost and pack away the decorations that will keep for next year. Make sure you clean your Halloween costume and put that away safely for next year too. If you think you won’t wear it again then offer it to a friend or donate it to charity.
