Local man makes a living on ostriches for over 25 years By Katy Steele

They call him “Jake the Snake.”

But Jake Perkins, 87, doesn’t work with snakes — he works with ostriches.

He’s been at it for 25 years ever since his son convinced him to break into the business. What started off as just two hens and one rooster has grown into the 90 ostriches that make up the Perkins Family Ostrich Farm in Reidsville, North Carolina. Perkins is quick to tell you he loves working the farm and has no plans to stop anytime soon.

“I’ll retire when I’m old enough, or when I get a nest egg,” Perkins jokes.

Collecting the eggs, he says, is one of the most dangerous parts of the job. Back when the farm first started, Perkins remembers watching a man’s first attempt at the task: it ended in four broken ribs and a kidney knocked out of place. Ostriches, especially the males, can be very protective.

“When you get the egg,” Perkins said, “that’s when they’ll kill you. You never turn your back on an ostrich. They can take 10-12 foot strides in a second.”

Although he has to be careful, the bird’s massive size does have its advantages.

“I ain’t worried about nobody stealing them,” he said. “They can take care of themselves. They say they can kill a lion.”

On average, Perkins says his biggest ostrich weighed around 400 pounds and was almost 10 feet tall. Despite the bird’s size, it can still run fast. Perkins has never ridden one, but he says they get up to 45 miles per hour.

“They take care of themselves. They can kill a lion.”

“He’s one of the nicest roosters I got,” Perkins said.

Perkins makes most of his business through breeding and selling. At around $2,000 dollars each, he sells ostriches to buyers all across the country. He also does business selling other parts of the ostrich. For instance, the eyelashes, for artist brushes; the smaller feathers, for computer dusters; and the big feathers, for exotic dancers.

Of all his fast birds Perkins has his favorites. There’s Crip (who ran up the road and broke his foot), One Eye (who Perkins had to hit in the side of the head once out of self-defense) and his all-time favorite: Rufus. When Perkins leans over the fence and calls his name, Rufus comes running.

Perkins is even responsible for supplying the ostriches in the Dolly Parton Dixie Stampede dinner-show. Perkins says when the performers burst onto the stage riding ostriches, it’s more than likely they were bought from his family farm.

Perkins also sells ostrich meat and eggs. He says one egg is equivalent to over twenty hen eggs and that the inside of an ostrich leg tastes like a filet mignon steak.

Today, Perkins cares for the ostriches with a few helpers, including his son who lives down the street. Just three years ago Perkins underwent heart surgery to have his heart valve replaced with a porcine, or a pig heart valve.

“I tried to get the doctor to use an ostrich valve,” he said. “I told him it would last longer.”

But Perkins says his surgery is in the past and that he wants to live in the future. And he’s not about to slow down. When asked if his job working with ostriches was dangerous Perkins replied: “I don’t look at it that way. I respect them and they respect me. And if they don’t? We settle our differences with a stick.”

Town Hall paves the way for Elon University expansion

Elon University gets the green light to carry on with construction proposals including new residences on Fire House Fields

The Elon Board of Aldermen voted Tuesday night in support of Elon University’s newest expansion plans, paving the way for significant construction.

Among several motions passed, the board granted Elon University permission to build four four-story dormitories and to continue plans for The Station at Mill Point, new upperclassmen housing located on Fire House Fields.

The new dormitories will be constructed on the North side of campus and will replace the current residence halls: Maynard, Moffitt, Colclough, Chandler and Staley. According to Ken Mullen, assistant vice president for business and finance, construction is set to begin the day after graduation and will develop in two phases with phase one completed in December of 2012 and phase two completed in the fall of 2014. The new addition will house 600 students in a four-building Global Village along Lake Mary Nell.

The dormitories will be the university’s first four story buildings on campus. Special attention has been given to ensure that the town’s fire department has the necessary resources for such buildings.

According to board member Ron Klepcyk after the meeting, the timing for adding taller buildings on campus is just right. “Two or three years ago the fire department got a new ladder truck,” he said. “We process safety measures beforehand and that’s one of the things we looked at ahead of time.”

The board also approved plans to construct a neighborhood, The Station at Mill Point, to house 324 juniors and seniors. Mullen says the new residences will be for upper classmen and that they will not be typical of the university. “It will be much different than the residence halls we have currently,” he said, “and it will not be brick.”

In addition, Klepcyk said the university looked into architecture and housing models of other universities, particularly Wofford College, when designing the village.

The Station at Mill Point will help the university meet a growing demand from upperclassmen that wish to move back on campus. It will also be opening in two phases, with the first phase done in the fall of 2012 and the second in the fall of 2013. According to Mullen the two-story buildings will have a townhouse feel and offer social space, as well as a lot of green space outside.

The board members also touched on the construction happening downtown on Williamson Avenue.

“One of the things the town wants to do, and the university wants to do, is to bring more businesses and restaurants to the downtown center area,” Mayor Jerry Tolley said. “A lot of it would be for residents of the town, but of course also for the students.”

Board member Lawrence Slade has lived in the town of Elon for all but 10 years

of his life and says he is enthusiastic about the area’s development. “It makes everything grow and brings more people in,” Slade said, “we’re a town from all over the world.”

The board members expressed hope that construction within the university would bring prosperity to the whole town.

“Twenty years from now we might be like UNC-Chapel Hill,” Slade said. “Elon has potential for growth and I’m very proud.”

First-year student Madeline Carlin attended the meeting and said she left with a greater appreciation for all the planning that goes into the town. “It really seems like the board members care and have students’ best interest at heart,” she said.

The next agenda-setting meeting for the board of aldermen will take place at 6 p.m. April 4.

Well we all know the future of journalism is heading to the Internet … and as it does, more and more people are making careers out of it. Hubert-Allen says she knows that students have heard it before, but one of the best things to do to prepare for a career is to get involved at Elon. “I was really intimidated by The Pendulum when I first got here … and then a year later I was an editor. But seriously … get involved.
