Club News

Attention: All 4-H members aged 15-21

Have you ever considered being a Youth Leader in one of the clubs you are a member of? Leadership,

communication, teamwork, and mentorship are all key pieces to youth leadership in 4-H. Youth Leaders are

senior 4-H members aged 15-21 who take on additional responsibilities within a club project. 4-H members

will receive an additional credit for completing the youth leader requirements. For more details, please contact

your club leader or the KLH Youth Leader contact, Anne Marie Taylor [email protected] ALL YOUTH

LEADERS MUST REGISTER WITH ANNE MARIE AND ATTEND A YOUTH LEADER ORIENTATION IN

ORDER TO RECEIVE CREDIT.

In 2015, the KLH 4-H Association is offering financial assistance to KLH 4-H members who attend camps and/or conferences. In order to receive partial compensation, 4-H members must complete the following steps:

1) Notify the KLH Activity Co-ordinator - Diane Armstrong that you have applied to a 4-H event. [email protected] or 705-741-8739

2) After you have attended the event, you must make a presentation to a 4-H club or public 4-H venue (i.e. Awards Program) or submit an article for inclusion in the 4-H newsletter and posting to the webpage.

3) Advise the KLH Activity Co-ordinator – Diane Armstrong, as to where the public presentation will occur.

After these steps have been completed, partial reimbursement of registration fees will occur on a first come first serve basis.

The 4-H Horse Club’s First Meeting On Thursday, May 16, 2015, the 4H Horse Club

had their first meeting at the Roberts’ farm to kick

off the club’s series of meetings. The meeting ran from 7:00pm-9:00pm. Mr.

Robert, the person who ran the meeting, started off with the rules that the club had,

followed by information on what they did in the club. After that, they did the 4H pledge. Because of the rain,

the large group of kids had to go inside to hold the elections for the different positions of the club.

Congratulations to Charleigh, the president, Madeline, the vice president, Faith, the secretary, Rebecka, the

reporter, and Clayton the treasurer. The club also settled the dates of the future meetings and whose house they

would be at. All the kids will be anticipating their next meeting at Brooke’s place on May 21.

YAC 2014

At first, I was really excited to go to YAC to be with some of my best friends from KLH. Upon reading the names

of all the campers, I didn’t know any people outside of Region three! That quickly changed though; through ice breaker and leadership games I met many wonderful 4-Hers. Each morning we met at the flagpole for morning refreshers. As the week progressed, we focused on communication skills, teamwork and leadership building through interactions with councillors and the other campers. The rest of the days were filled with low ropes, archery, swimming (though the lake was cold!) and games, my favourite being BARNYARD. Our free time usually consisted of card games and great snacks! It was sad when the week came to an end, and it was hard to say goodbye to our friends. However, since camp I have been in contact with all of the YACers, and have seen some at Regional Go for the Gold, provincial Go for the Gold (at the Royal), fairs and provincial sporting events. YAC was a great experience, and I am so glad to have met such amazing friends! Sadie-Jane Hickson

YAC, Judge It & Go for the Gold 2014 I had an awesome time at Youth Adventure Camp 2014. The camp was jam packed with games and activities.

We played a large variety of games, from camouflage to capture the flag, pen break and hot potato. Each one of the games increased my leadership skills and my relationships with fellow campers. Some of the activities that we did were low ropes, archery, swimming, a campfire, goal setting sessions and team building sessions. To end the camp we had a

giant talent show where campers and councillors were able to share their gifts and talents. By the end of my three days at camp I had made so many new friends. I see these people at other 4-H activities and I have stayed in contact with them since camp. I highly encourage any 4-H members between the ages of 12 and 14 to attend Youth Adventure Camp, you will have a blast!

Other 4-H events that I attended in 2014 were the Region 3 Judge It! and Go for the Gold. I encourage all 4-H members to attend your local judging night and your regional judging competition. Not only do they increase your judging skills but they enable better relationships with fellow 4-H members. I also attended my county Go for the Gold competition, my regional Go for the Gold competition and even continued on to win the Go for the Gold competition at the Royal with my team. Go for the Gold is a great way to increase your knowledge on so many different subjects and to have fun well doing it.

I had a blast attending every one of these activities and I encourage everyone to get out and take advantage of all of these amazing opportunities.

FLIA 2014

This past year I attended FLIA. Future Leaders In Action is a four day camp hosted during march break. In 2014 it was held at Camp Kawartha in Peterborough. The camp is only held every other year and only has space for 40 participants. FLIA is one of the ways a person can receive youth leader training for a 4H club. At camp we did seminars and games to help develop leadership skills. We were put in groups whose job it was to lead one part of the camp activities. Some groups led short activities throughout each day, while others did a longer program on one evening. There were also training sessions to teach new ways of sharing ideas in a large group. These included methods to get people out of their shell and allow everyone to participate. Of course at 4H you learn to do by doing so to teach us the methods of communicating and collecting ideas the facilitators had us participate in and then run many different methods of sharing these ideas. There were team building and bonding activities too, including a high ropes course. On the final evening there was a banquet to thank our sponsor, Dairy Farmers of Ontario. Throughout the whole week an effort was made to include everyone and allow people to make new friends and express their ideas. It was great fun and I would sincerely recommend it to everyone who could possibly attend. March break 2015 the camp running was not FLIA but PLC. Progressive Leadership Camp has space for 80 participants but also fills up quickly. I would recommend going to either camp or even both! They will both be an experience to remember.
