By law, there are set limits and restrictions on the fish you can legally catch and keep in Ontario. Each species has its own limits and restrictions for what you can keep, depending on the type of fishing licence you buy (conservation or sport fishing), the fishing zone (15 & 17) and waterbody, the size of the fish and the time of year.
Visit www.ontario.ca/travel-and-recreation/fishing
HAVE A SAFE TRIPWe recommend at a bare minimum that you should have the following with you: • Canadian-approved flotation device or lifejacket of
appropriate size for each passenger on board • Buoyant heaving line at least 15 metres in length • Watertight flashlight OR approved flares • Sound-signaling device • Manual propelling device (i.e. paddle) & an anchor with
at least 15 metres of rope, chain or cable • Bailer OR manual water pump • Class 5 BC fire extinguisher
If possible, photograph, destroy and report invasive specimens. Call the Invading Species Hotline at 1.800.563.7711, or online www.eddmaps.org/ontario.
On the online reporting website or app you can:• Report sightings of invasive species• Get information & photos of more than 150 invasive species• Create, view & download invasive species reports & maps• Contribute to a community of citizen scientists
These regulations apply across the province: you can attach up to 4 hooks to your fishing line and can use only 1 line. Certain exceptions exist, depending on where and how you are fishing.
Great LakesYou can use 2 lines when fishing from a boat in the Great Lakes, however, exceptions and restrictions apply.
Ice fishingIn most waters, you can ice fish with 2 lines as long as:• you stay within 60 metres at all times of any line or tip-up• you have a clear & unobstructed view of your lines at all times
RULES FOR LEAD SINKERS & JIGSYou cannot use lead fishing sinkers or jigs in Canada’s national parks and wildlife areas. When birds and other wildlife swallow them they can get lead poisoning. Small lead sinkers have been banned from National Parks.
FISHING WITH LIVE BAITBy law, you need a valid fishing licence (e.g., sport or conservation) to catch your own live baitfish, leeches, crayfish and northern leopard frogs.
With a fishing licence, you cannot:• sell baitfish and leeches — unless you have a valid
commercial bait licence• import live fish, crayfish, live leeches or salamanders• capture, import or use salamanders as bait
In Ontario, the fishing regulations control live bait to prevent the spread of infectious fish diseases, unwanted & invasive species.
In some areas of Ontario and many individual waterbodies, you cannot use or possess any kind of live bait. You can find a complete set of provincial rules, including restrictions at www.ontario.ca/page/fishing-live-bait.
BAIT CATCH/PURCHASE LIMITSYou can catch or buy baitfish and leeches up to the possession limit. You can catch crayfish or frogs but you cannot buy them. You cannot have in your possession more than 120 baitfish, 120 leeches, 36 crayfish and 12 northern leopard frogs.

Catch a break.Fishing in Kawarthas Northumberland offers you access to a variety of favoured species including cold and warm water fishes. Interestingly, warm water species such as bass, walleye and muskie are most commonly found in lakes and rivers north of the Oak Ridges Moraine (ORM). Cold water fish, such as rainbow (steelhead), brook, brown trout and salmon, are generally found in waters south of the ORM and in Lake Ontario.
Fish for one species in the morning, have lunch and fish for another species after a short drive or boat ride. Kawarthas Northumberland is a true angler’s paradise, whether you’re chasing tournament bass on Rice or Cameron Lake, fly fishing for rainbow on the Ganaraska River or trolling for lake trout in Chandos Lake. Certain times of the year are especially popular, so book your motel, cottage, B&B or campsite early.
Please use this map as a general guide as to where the many species of fish can be found in Kawarthas Northumberland’s 350+ lakes.
