KAWASAKI GAKUEN, currently consists of five educational institutions
and two university hospitals: Kawasaki Medical School, Kawasaki
Medical School Hospital, Kawasaki Medical School General Medical
Hospital, Kawasaki Senior High School Attached to Kawasaki Medical
School, Kawasaki University of Medical Welfare, Kawasaki College of
Allied Health Professions and Kawasaki Junior College of Rehabilitation. We made its initial steps in Kurashiki under the philosophy that were
laid down by the founder Sukenobu Kawasaki in 1970:
Liberal Humanity; Sound Body; Profound Knowledge.Inheriting the founder’s achievements, as all of our institutions closely
coordinate with the aim of nurturing excellent medical personnel who
demonstrate a rich sense of humanity, we contribute to society through
the realization of and research in excellent medical education as well as
medical welfare and medical technology education, and through the
provision of medical services at our Hospital.
In the future, we look to continuously contribute to substantial
development in medical science, medical care, and medical welfare, and
aim to create medical institutions that can live harmoniously with all as a
comprehensive education center that cultivates medical specialists who
will serve to improve people’s health.
Greetings
In order to be a competent physician, one must have common sense, be conscientious, warmhearted and trustworthy. For this reason, it is imperative to emphasize moral education.
Physicians must be patient-friendly, faithful, and dedicated. They must have physical strength as well as mental strength. In delivering sufficient medical care to patients, one must have physical fortitude generated from breadth of mind.
In order to restore health and enable people to enjoy good health and minimize suffering, physicians must acquire and continually adapt to rapidly-advancing medical knowledge and skills to gain the gratitude of patients and society. At our group of medical institutions, the importance of intellectual training and practical education in medicine are key to achieving a successful outcome.

(Matsushima Campus)
Kawasaki Gakuen, consisting of five educational institutions and two university hospitals, is an integrated group of educational institutions focused on medical science, medical care and medical welfare, where more than 4,500 faculty/staff are engaged in education and professional medical care and nearly 6,000 students learn. Kawasaki Gakuen was founded in 1970. However, it made its initial step as the Showa Surgical Clinic (the predecessor of the current Kawasaki Medical School General Medical Center), which was established by Sukenobu Kawasaki, the founder of Kawasaki Gakuen in Okayama City in 1938. Under the concept that “hospitals should exist for patients” and “hospitals should provide medical treatment 365 days a year, day and night,” he provided medical
services, attending to not only patients’ diseases but also their lives. The founder also established facilities (current Social Welfare Corporation Asahigawa-so) for the physically and mentally-challenged children who could not be only treated through medical care. This is based on the idea of medical welfare: “the integration of medical care and welfare.” In 1970, with rising concerns about a shortage of physicians and the decay of medical education, he established Kawasaki Medical School and Kawasaki Senior High School Attached to Kawasaki Medical School in Kurashiki City in order to educate and train competent clinicians under the philosophy “Liberal Humanity; Sound Body; Profound Knowledge.” He then established the Kawasaki
Medical School Hospital and the Kawasaki College of Allied Health Professions and Kawasaki Junior College of Rehabilitation as part of his continuous approach to developing “team-based medical care.” After Akinori Kawasaki was appointed the second Chairman, with an eye toward a new age, Kawasaki University of Medical Welfare was established in 1991, with the aim of advancing education and research in medical welfare through the integration of medical care and welfare as a world leader. New steps were taken in order to become Japan’s first integrated group of educational institutions focused on medical science, medical care and medical welfare. In 2000, a complete renovation of Kawasaki Medical School and Kawasaki Medical School Hospital began, and an 11-year
construction and expansion period that continued until 2010 created the most modern educational, medical, and research environments. As long desired, Kawasaki Hospital was newly built in a new location, and was renamed Kawasaki Medical School General Medical Center, and opened in December 2016. Under the leadership of its third Chairman Seiji Kawasaki, Kawasaki Gakuen continues along a path of progress toward the 50th anniversary of its foundation in 2020, aiming to make further strides and contribute to local communities.
We continue to make progress toward the future as an integrated group of educational institutions focused on medical science, medical care and medical welfare

Kawasaki Medical SchoolIn response to today’s super-aging society, information-oriented society, globalized society, and technologically innovated society, medical schools are socially required to foster physicians who are capable of coping with all of these social circumstances and to provide advanced medical services. While constantly confirming the advanced educational and medical systems that have been cultivated since its establishment, Kawasaki Medical School will continue to evolve to fulfill additional responsibilities for intelligent integration moving ahead of the times, develop human resources that can predict and meet social demands, and act as a center for medical services that can be trusted by the sick. With the inclusion of Kawasaki Medical School General Medical Center (in Okayama City) for clinical training, our clinical education has been further enhanced. We will step up efforts as a characteristic base for the transmission of education, research and medical services exploiting our uniqueness.Under the philosophy of “Liberal Humanity; Sound Body; Profound Knowledge,”
we seek to contribute to public health and social welfare and advances in medical science
by sending excellent physicians into the world, focusing on “education, research and medical services.”

This room is fully equipped with media facilities that can be used not only for information education but also for other purposes, including language study, clinical education and diagnostic imaging. This classroom offers an environment that enables high-level education through the utilization of computers and networks as well as the Internet.
Multi-Media Classroom Private Study Cubicles
One of the features of our school is that it is mandatory for first-year students to live in a dormitory as the first step toward realizing the philosophy of “Liberal Humanity.” Living with friends in the student dormitory is a great source of strength to acquire a rich sense of humanity, and the student dormitory is the best place for making lifelong friends. The on-campus student dormitory, having private rooms and shared spaces, allows students to live a comfortable dormitory life in a quiet environment.
Introduction of major facilities
LoungeMaking the most of an excellent natural environment in “Furusato (hometown) Forest,” this light-filled, tranquil, elegant lounge takes up an extensive open ceiling space. It is used for many purposes, such as gatherings and workshops, as a place for interaction among students and faculty members.
Based on the philosophy advocated by the founder of Kawasaki Gakuen, all faculty members are involved in education as one. Setting educational objectives are stated at the right in order to educate and train physicians having a sense of ethics combined with intelligence and morality based on the premise of human compassion, diligence about acquiring profound medical knowledge and contributing to new medical science. And having the strong will and physical strength to accomplish the above.

Since the establishment of Kawasaki Medical School Hospital, we have committed ourselves to the development of medical services and to provide patients with medical services as a local base hospital. While being an educational hospital, the hospital was approved as an advanced treatment hospital to provide advanced medical services by the former Ministry of Health and Welfare in 1994; authorized as a designated cancer core hospital by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare in 2008; and re-accredited (as Hospital Type 2) by the Japan Council for Quality Health Care in 2015. The belief of “medical services solely for patients” advocated by Dr. Sukenobu Kawasaki, who founded Kawasaki Gakuen and served as the first hospital director, is our core principle, and all staff have made efforts together in order to achieve this policy. Also, the principle of “offering medical services anytime 24 hours a day” has been our basic stance focusing on emergency medical care from the beginning. As an advanced acute care hospital and as an advanced treatment hospital, we will fulfill our duty to provide highly-advanced and excellent quality medical services while deepening our coordination efforts with community hospitals and health clinics.

Hospital wards and outpatient departments are comprised of centers by organ/function, and each center has its own signature color. The wards are formed mainly by private rooms, which are designed with consideration given to amenities and privacy of patients. A functional, safe, well-lit, and clean convalescence environment is maintained, with access to high-speed Internet at every bedside. The Furusato (hometown) Forest and roof garden provide an alternative space for rest and relaxation. Consideration is also given to the welfare shop, concession area, bookstore, bank, hair salon, barber shop, restaurant, coffee shop, etc., so as not to cause inconvenience for patients in the hospital.

As an educational hospital and as a place of clinical education and learning, we provide medical students and interns with training and residents with discipline to become specialists. Also, as a place of practical training, we annually accept about 3,300 students who aim to develop careers as nurses or medical staff. In addition, our hospital serves as a place of training for people from inside and outside Okayama Prefecture and from overseas, and as a place of training for emergency medical technicians.

Our Doctor-Heli went into service ahead of all others in Japan in 2001, and has achieved great results in improving life-saving efforts and limiting aftereffects. On busy days, it is mobilized more than 4 times a day, and the annual number of flights is approximately 400.
As a first among other university hospitals in Japan, we have established a department of stroke medicine. We are medically prepared to answer the call through the use of a dedicated hotline. We have gained attention for our results by performing “intravenous thrombolytic therapy using rt-PA.”
Through the use of a cardiovascular medicine hotline, we perform emergency catheterizations and interventional treatments on a 24-hour basis.

System for providing the highest level of safe and specialized medical care
We have established the first advanced emergency medical care center in Okayama with the support of the trinity: the national government, the prefectural government and the university. In addition to general emergency patients, this center admits and treats serious patients requiring a high level of special treatment, such as burns and poisoning. Also, our highly specialized medical service system backed up by physicians from all departments including pediatrics, together with emergency specialists as a key, contributes to regional emergency medical services.
■Advanced Emergency Medical Care Center
■ Intensive cancer treatments
While the Medical Safety Management Department plays a predominant role in its efforts to address hospital-wide medical safety, we conduct such activities as medical safety patrols and enlightenment through malpractice analysis and countermeasures by hospital newsletters. We also take proactive measures against nosocomial infections through the formation of an infection control committee and infection control team (ICT), and other activities that lead the nation.
■Provision of safe medical care
Surgical procedures, angiographic examinations, and intravascular treatments are performed in the Central Operating Theatre, consisting of 13 operating rooms and 4 angiographic laboratories with latest facilities and medical equipment. Operating room environments and clean rooms are well-maintained to facilitate operations of respective departments.
■Central Surgical Unit
Specialized anesthetists, intensive-care specialists and cardiologists are on call 24 hours a day by a system that can provide the highest level of medical care based on a medical team consists of nurses, and clinical technicians.
■ICU and CCU
Including PICU and aseptic rooms, the Children’s Health Center Ward and NICU are set up to provide specialized and advanced pediatric medical services. At the pediatric emergency outpatient department, as many as 70 patients are treated on a busy day.
■Pediatric emergency system
Kawasaki Medical School Hospital, which was authorized as a disaster center hospital in 1997, is emergency-trained to dispatch ambulance rescue staff should a disaster strike. We also operate DMAT (disaster medical assistance team) to provide medical support at the time of disasters.

■CompassionIn order to realize compassion that can elicit feelings of safety and satisfaction, we adopt a primary nursing system. One primary nurse, as a person responsible for nursing care and as a member of team-based medical care, regularly attends to each patient.
■Clinical Education and Training CenterNumber of users of this Center (FY2016):approx.24,000 Number of visitors:approx.2,000
This Center is open not only to our hospital staff but also to all other medical personnel, including physicians, nurses, medical staff, and medical students. In a simulated ward unprecedented in Japan, the latest simulator and medical information equipment are introduced, where trainees can learn not only procedures treatments and examinations, emergency medical care, nursing care, and basic skills and usage of equipment necessary for caring, but also how team-based medical care should be.
We are devoted to promoting and providing patients with advanced medical services and clinical trials that can respond to critical social missions and expectations required of university hospitals and advanced treatment hospitals. In particular, we are actively involved in advanced medical services, including “activated self-lymphocytes introduction therapy using a self-tumor/tissue and dendritic cells” and “diagnosis of Alzheimer’s by positron emission tomography using PDG,” and clinical trials, such as “treatment for lung cancer using immunoregulatory drugs” and “taurine therapy for MELAS patients.”
■Promotion of advanced medical services and clinical trials
Diagnostic imaging provides image information useful in systemic areas, such as dynamic function analysis of abdominal regions as well as prompt action against acute-stage cerebral infarction by means of high-performance equipment, including 3T MRI and CT. In diagnostic breast imaging, we are committed to improving the accuracy of examinations with mammography equipment by the most advanced tomosynthesis technology. In radiation therapy, we actively promote with high-precision radiation treatments, such as stereotactic irradiation and intensity modulated radiotherapy, and perform high-dose rate intracavitary irradiation in cooperation with the department of urology.

We promote “team-based medical care” for each patient in close coordination among specialized staff, such as physicians and nurses in order to provide high-quality, safe and secure medical services and to maintain and improve the quality of life of patients.
A dedicated nurse provides smooth support so that an appropriate convalescence environment can be secured for inpatients. Also, a comfortable therapeutic environment and medical services are provided in cooperation with the Bed Control Center and Patients Support Center, and others.
■Inpatients Support Center
■Hospital volunteeringStudents from Kawasaki University of Medical Welfare and Kawasaki College of Allied Health Professions provide volunteer services so that patients can receive medical treatments more smoothly.
We are actively engaged in the promotion of cancer treatments, advanced medical care, palliative care, and medical practice support from patient to patient as multiple departments specialized in ablative surgery, chemotherapy, high-precision radiation therapy, postexcisional functional maintenance, etc. are unified. As about 500 patients receive in-center treatments per month at the Outpatient Center (equipped with 14 beds and 6 reclining chairs), providing chemotherapy to cancer patients, we are authorized as a MHLW-designated cancer core hospital. Also, clean rooms (two beds with a cleanliness rating of ISO Class 5, and five beds ISO Class 6, and nine beds ISO Class 7) are fully equipped for compromised patients to receive hospital treatments.
As a core for local healthcare, our 24-hour emergency medical service system covers not only initial emergency medical care, including infants and secondary emergency medical care, but also wide-area tertiary emergency medical care, including adjacent prefectures.

Under the basic policy of “being a hospital that is trusted by community residents and can provide safe and secure medical services, we provide patient-oriented high-quality advanced medical services with three features: “emergency medical services” by which community residents can live without anxiety, “advanced and specialized medical services” to provide cancer treatment and other cutting-edge medical care, and “rehabilitation” for patients to return to society as soon as possible.
1 Provision of community-based medical services
2 Provision of highly advanced medical services to meet community medical needs
Under the guiding principles “to offer medical services solely for patients,” we provide community-based medical services 24 hours a day in central Okayama City.
We provide expeditious and appropriate emergency medical services on a 24-hour basis for 365 days a year so that community residents can live without anxiety. The Emergency Center is equipped with CT equipment exclusively for critical-care patients and with three severe case treatment rooms and an ER, aiming at emergency medical services without rejections. At the rooftop heliport, we accept critical-care patients arriving by air ambulance. We also offer medical care for patients suffering from strokes or circulatory disease by specialists 24 hours a day. The stroke care unit (SCU), having 15 beds, administers emergency medical treatment requiring expert therapists, such as thrombolytic therapy called rt-PA in response to cerebral infarction and neuroendovascular therapy using catheters at the IVR center. We handle emergency catheterization against acute coronary syndromes (acute myocardial infarction, unstable angina) and cases at any time of day or night on a 24-hour basis.
■ Provision of emergency medical services on a 24-hour basis for 365 days a year
As a regional medical care support hospital, we are committed to enhanced coordination with local medical institutions and also provide comprehensive and consistent medical services with the establishment of open-type beds for treating patients in cooperation/combination with regional private practitioners. As a part of regional medical coordination, we secure smooth examination appointments through the introduction of an appointment system for diagnostic imaging (CT, MRI, PET/CT), upper endoscopy, and other examinations. The Home-care Center practices support for patients’ returning home while interacting with local home-visit nursing stations.
■ Promotion of regional medical coordination and regional comprehensive care system
Our Health Checkup Center contributes to health promotion in communities through proactive health screening and other medical checkup activities. We also transmit the latest medical and welfare-related information to community people by dispatching our physicians, nurses or other medical staff as instructors to provide health classes and courses open to the public on regular basis.
■Health promotion in communities
As a university hospital, specialized physicians perform the most advanced treatment and surgery. We handle a wide range of medical treatment including athletic injury, orthopedic, spine and spinal surgery, children’s and women’s care, head and neck tumor diagnosis, endoscopic gastroenterological disease diagnosis and treatment, strabismus and other pediatric ophthalmology.
■Advanced and cutting-edge surgery
We educate and train specialized generalist physicians and surgeons who can provide initial treatments for various diseases and diagnoses and treatments for common diseases while maintaining a high degree of professionalism in respective fields in order to provide holistic medicine required for local healthcare.
■ Educating and training general practitioners
While educating and training physicians who are capable of primary care as a clinical training hospital and also proactively accepting clinical training of students who intend to be nurses and other medical staff as a clinical training facility, we are dedicated to educating and training medical professionals who are not only well educated with respect to medical science and medical skills but also demonstrate a rich sense of humanity.
■Clinical training hospital/educational hospital
The medical library provides a well-organized academic and research environment for faculty members and students. Approximately 160,000 books within the walls of the Kawasaki Medical School Library are available for loan by using a dedicated online system. Also, online journals are available for access.
■Networking with the library attached to Kawasaki Medical School
One of the many research units of the Central Research Institute of Kawasaki Medical School has been established to enable research centering on molecular biology. Facilities, equipment and other functions necessary for research are centralized so that advanced research can be conducted smoothly as a feature of a university hospital.
■ Establishment of research units
The Rehabilitation Center having a physical therapy room, occupational therapy room and five speech therapy rooms; a subacute rehabilitation ward having 54 beds; and a rehabilitation garden are located on the 8th floor. As these facilities are integrated on the same floor, proactive rehabilitation is implemented from early on for functional recovery and QOL improvement.
■ Implementation of acute phase rehabilitation
Making use of high-quality excellent practices, each patient is gently wrapped in a high level of confidence and trust, and provided with compassionate nursing care.
The hospital wards, consisting of private rooms and quadruple rooms, are designed in consideration of the privacy of patients. A comfortable convalescence environment has been carefully designed and coordinated with a bright and expansive outpatient waiting area, day rooms on the hospital wards, and other facilities. Roof gardens on the 8th and 15th floors and a woody garden with a walking trail on the south side of the building offer places of relief, creating a space in which people can gather and interact.
■ Toward brilliant nursing practice
As prefectural-designated cancer hospital and as a university hospital, we provide high-quality cancer care. Through the introduction of the latest radiation diagnostic equipment, including PET-CT, MRT and CT, we are committed to high-precision cancer diagnosis. Organized around 12 operating rooms, we create an environment for advanced cancer surgery employing surgery support robots including “da Vinci.” At the Radiation Therapy Center, with the adoption of latest radiation therapy equipment LINAC, we have begun cancer therapy using innovative irradiation technology called Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), by which radiation can be focused on tumors alone with the aid of a computer. To the Outpatient Center having 20 beds, specialized medical oncologists, nurses and pharmacists are assigned to provide safe and secure chemotherapy on an outpatient basis with emphasis placed on QOL. On the top floor of the hospital wards is a palliative care ward equipped with 18 beds to provide physical and psychological pain care.
■ Provision of high-quality cancer care
We fulfill our societal responsibility as a hospital attached to a medical university by taking progressive approaches to advanced medical services based on community medical needs and also by providing safe and secure advanced and specialized medical services

Sukenobu Kawasaki, the founder of Kawasaki Gakuen believed in “the integration of medical care and welfare,” and this belief was born at the site of medical services, attending to not only each patient’s mental and physical treatment but also to the lives of each physician. Kawasaki University of Medical Welfare is the world’s first four-year university based on the concept of “medical welfare.”
■The future of “medical welfare” begins here
Many of our faculty members are engaged on the medical front including Kawasaki Medical School Hospital, and are charged with practical training at the hospital as well as presenting campus lectures. Based on their wealth of clinical experience and through their instruction based on frontline realities, students can learn what practices are and acquire working knowledge and skills that can be used on-site.
■Detailed instruction by faculty members who offer extensive clinical experience and field knowledge
Students can receive practical training at various facilities, hospitals and other institutions throughout Japan, centered on two affiliated hospitals: adjacent Kawasaki Medical School Hospital and, Kawasaki Medical School General Medical Center located in central Okayama City. Each student’s general school life is warmly supervised and supported by teachers at school and the housemaster and staff members in the dormitory. In this environment, students maintain an orderly lifestyle and develop independent minds, and nurture irreplaceable friendships and compassion on their own.
Boarding school Night study Lectures by graduatesStudents are also provided with study support. During junior high school, students may rely heavily on private tutors or cram school teachers, however, such a dependent learning style can soon be shifted over to an independent style by making use of our study support system. During night study hours, our teachers and outside lecturers offer study instruction according to each student’s level of academic achievement.
Students are given opportunities to hear stories from our school’s older graduates who now play an active role as physicians. Current students can deepen their interest in medicine by touching real medical devices and receive advice that can be obtained only from this network of older graduates, who have experienced school life, study methods, ways of socializing with friends, and so on.

KAWASAKI CLUB Kawasaki Gakuen and Asahigawa-soLifelong Education
The concept of “medical welfare institutions “Asahigawa-so arose from the day-to-day contact of Sukenobu Kawasaki, the founder of Kawasaki Gakuen, with patients.Sukenobu Kawasaki graduated from Okayama Medical College (currently Okayama University), worked for Okayama Citizens Hospital, and then opened a surgical hospital (later Kawasaki General Hospital; currently Kawasaki Medical School General Medical Center) in Okayama City. While attending to many patients, he noticed a situation in which the physically-challenged and elderly were not provided with appropriate medical care and education, and came to feel the need for “medical welfare” combining medical care and welfare from his profound thinking as a physician/director of the hospital. Then, he established Asahigawa-so Foundation as a pioneer in Japan in 1956, and in the following year, he launched a children’s facility for the physically-challenged “Asahigawa Ryoikuen,” a children’s facility for the mentally-challenged “Asahigawa Gakuen,” and infant facility “Asahigawa Nyujiin.”The first Chairman Sukenobu Kawasaki’s desire for bright and medicine-centered social welfare institutions was carried on by the second Chairman Yasuhiko Egusa (the first president of Kawasaki University of Medical Welfare) and successively through to the current Chairman Shigeru Suemitsu.
Asahigawa-so (Gion, Kita-ku, in Okayama City)* was established in 1956 by Sukenobu Kawasaki, the founder of Kawasaki Gakuen, aiming to develop comprehensive medical welfare institutions based on the spirit of “Keiten-Aijin (Revere heaven, love people.)” - respect for human beings.*The establishment of Asahigawa-so Foundation was approved by Okayama Prefecture in 1956, and the establishment of the Social Welfare Corporation Asahigawa-so was approved by the Ministry of Health and Welfare in 1959.

TIMELINE
Exchanges with China started with friendly conversations about Japan-China friendship that were held when Sukenobu Kawasaki, the founder of Kawasaki Gakuen visited China and was invited to attend a reception with Chairman Mao Tse-tung 毛沢東 and Premier Zhou Enlai 周恩来. With the Chinese Medical Association, an active exchange program commenced immediately after re-establishment of diplomatic relations in 1978. In 1984, Chairman Sukenobu Kawasaki (at that time) was granted the title of “Honorary Fellow” as the first foreign resident by the Chinese Medical Association, commending him for his great contribution to the modernization of Chinese medicine.

With the advent of the 2000s, we signed a “Memorandum of Understanding” with Green
College of the University of Oxford (currently Green Templeton College) in 2002. From that
time until the end of 2016, twenty two faculty members of Kawasaki Medical School and
Kawasaki University of Medical Welfare attended on a study abroad program, and since 2014,
an annual joint symposium has been held by faculty members from both England and Japan,
deepening exchanges in the fields of medical science, medical care and medical welfare.
We have also widened our circle of international
exchange with an exchange agreement with the
University of Victoria in Canada, Griffith University
in Australia, and the University of Freiburg in
Germany, etc.
Since the 1970s soon after its foundation, Kawasaki Gakuen has focused its energies on
proactive international exchanges. Its history began with the conclusion of a friendship
agreement between Kawasaki Medical School and the University of Minnesota in the
United States, with an advanced postgraduate clinical education system, as a basis for
medical education.
In the 1980s, taking an opportunity on the conclusion of the Treaty of Peace and
Friendship between Japan and the People’s Republic of China, we signed a
“Memorandum of Understanding on Medical and Medical Education Exchanges” with
Beijing Second Medical College (currently Capital Medical University) and Shanghai
College of Traditional Chinese Medicine (currently Shanghai University of Traditional
Chinese Medicine), and concluded a “Friendship Agreement” with Shanghai Medical
Worker’s College (currently Shanghai University of Medicine & Health Sciences).
Our exchanges have expanded through mutual visits by delegations and acceptance of
international students at Kawasaki University of Medical Welfare and Kawasaki College
of Allied Health Professions.
