Sat in the Energy Efficiency Class of A++, the Winning Linedishwasher from Bosch maximises water efficiency in the rinse
cycles through heating the water faster. Other clevertechnologies such as targeted water circulation and improved
pump performance contribute towards the dishwasher’s abilityto use less energy while increasing performance through theActiveWater feature. Integrated with AquaStar technology, itwill only ever use six litres of water to wash 13 place settings
every time it is set to a standard Eco 50C programme. Thissaves 43 litres of water compared to the hand washed load.

Industry insight:
“Given how topical the rising cost of
household bills and increased energy
prices currently are in the UK, it is
surprising that water saving products
which offer both energy and money
saving opportunities are not increasing
in popularity at a faster rate.
“From an industry perspective, our
response to the ‘going green’ concept
has been to provide a solution that
satisfies this challenge, for now.
However, rather than so-called ‘eco’
products sitting as an added optional
extra or as a separate category
altogether, eco must become the norm
if we’re to make a difference.
“The fundamental issue as a
designer and manufacturer is the lack
of understanding by the trade and lack
of awareness on the part of consumers,
in terms of the benefits delivered by
energy and water saving products.
Engaging as many people as possible is
the key to achieving this change.
Merchants, retailers and installers need
to be up to date with product
developments and how to advise their
customers on the best products for
them. The whole industry supply chain
needs to have a better understanding
to provide the consumer or specifier
with the best information possible to
aid their purchase, too.
“It will take quite some time to
achieve any major shift change and as
things stand I believe any change will
only be through a gradual process.
This does therefore provoke the
thought that perhaps in the future,
and as demonstrated by other sectors,
the only way to bring about an truly
effective and meaningful focus on
water and energy efficiency, would be
to add an element of enforcement
through legislation. This is especially
so, given how voluntary take-up is
typically very weak – even when
subsidies and incentives are offered.”
Richard Farrow -
Fittings Product
Manager,
Ideal Standard.

”Low energy consumption is one of the top
three factors that consumers consider
when buying a dishwasher. Zanussi
research shows the most important factors
are low energy consumption (83%),
automatic off-functions (68%) and faster
washing cycles (56%).”
Sophie Davidson -
Head of Product Line, Zanussi .
“In the UK, consumers only replace their appliances on average everynine years, so they may be surprised to see how far energy efficiencyhas advanced since their last purchase.”Iain Starkey - Marketing Manager, Hotpoint.
Indesit’s new B energy rated HSD (Humidity Sensor Dryer)tumble dryer features a patented 3-sensor technology that
protects clothes while saving time and energy. Themachine’s three sensors - a humidity sensor and two
temperature sensors (one at inlet and one at outlet) - worktogether to spot when humidity inside the drum reaches
20% and stop pumping in heat. Instead, the machinerecirculates the latent heat that’s already in the drum andthe warm, damp clothes - saving energy and overdrying.

Market Insight: • Which directions are the new
trends taking European design?
Top-end European kitchen manufacturers
set the standard for design trends that
will ultimately filter through to the mid
market. Wall panels will be huge in 2014,
creating a lynchpin for uniting the design
of open plan spacing. Full height décor
panels and fully retractable doors will be
a trend that opens up multiple planning
options for innovative interior designs.
Sliding doors will also be used to create
seamless design and functionality in
freestanding base units and hidden
components.
• Is Britain following the trends or
are British originality and bespoke
offers creating trends of their own?
Britain will continue to look to Europe for
up and coming design trends. A
combination of a rich design history and
huge investment from leading brands,
allows for the continual pushing of
design boundaries. Open plan and multi
space design has a long-standing
reputation in Europe and remains a
growing but relatively new concept to
the UK. This, combined with financial
restraints for smaller companies, ensures
that the UK market will continue to look
to Europe for cutting edge design.
• What are the latest décor trends
in the European kitchen sector?
A key trend for 2014 will be sustainability
as well as a richness of texture. Whether
it’s reclaimed oak veneer fronts from roof
frameworks and floors, or wall panels and
glass fronts, design-led consumers will be
seeking combinations that add real
character and a statement to interiors.

Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house
Tears had appeared, from child through to spouse. The worktops were leant by the chimney with care,In hopes that the kitchen units would soon be there.
The adults tossed with stress in their beds,While visions of kitchens danced in their heads. And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,Had finally realised we were going to snap.
When it began to dawn, amidst the clutterThe kitchen had been ordered in umm, err….A bit of a hurry.
Poor Mama had imagined, the DIY Store would ensure,The kitchen would be here, and we wouldn’t be poor. But Mama is dismayed, and so it would appearThat turkey is off, it’s eight barbecued reindeer!
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snowGave plenty of time to feel pretty low. What I wondered would have occurredIf Mama had chosen Schüller and not followed the herd!

As Christmas appeared, all glory and sparkleLunch would be ready, without the debacle!Kitchen fitted and relatives fedAnd at the end of the Eve, Mama peaceful in bed.
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roofThe prancing and pawing of fairy tale proof. As I drew in my head, and was turning around,Down the chimney, the Schüller fitter came with a bound.
How Mama twinkled, her dimples so merryRealising her kitchen would soon feed so many. With Schüller magic and cabinets perfectly madeThe Christmas we feared lost, was about to be saved!
He knew his stuff, that jolly fitterAnd set to his task, he couldn’t have been quicker,And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself!A wink of his eye and a twist of his drill,And the kitchen was fitted, it was utterly brill.
So this is our tale, of near Christmas disasterThat Schüller rewrote because they are just faster. So fit your kitchen in plenty of timeTo ensure a Christmas tale as magical as mine.

ready to be inspired? Each year the Renolit DESIGN 3D Highlights Collection showcases the
latest designs and solid colours that have been added to the company’sCOVAREN and ALKOREN 3D stock range. This year Renolit has added 29
new designs that meet current market fashions and décor trends.
Today’s kitchen design is all about choice
and personal expression; matt colours
are just as on-trend as high gloss; new
deep textured realistic surface finishes are
taking on a new importance, and stand up
well next to subtle soft touch finishes; classic
oak in many different forms and shades never
fails to be popular; while emerging is a taste
for abstract designs.
Keeping its finger firmly on the trend
pulse, Renolit has created several new designs
that reflect not only the current market but
also emerging trends that, as part of the
ALKOREN and COVAREN range, are set to take
the UK market by storm.
New to the ALKOREN range, Babylon
offers a contemporary duo-toned abstract
print. Its modern, rune-like design is based on
historic symbols or lettering that is subtle
enough to cover the entirety of the print in a
non-directional design. It also offers a discreet
surface texture that creates a delicate textile
impression from a distance. Available in two
colour variations, Babylon 1 is modern, non-
intrusive white-grey, whilst Babylon 2 is a
green-blue combination which creates a
stronger colour statement.
New additions continue with the new
fantasy-inspired Kroko design. With a clear
trend towards stylised imitation, animal prints

the matt decorative print diffract the light,
creating a unique twin matt-gloss effect.
Combined with a slight emboss on the
surface, Kroko sets the mood in any room.
Thermo completes the new offerings
from the ALKOREN range. The blackened
oak, which has finely grained areas to give a
charismatic and sophisticated design, is
produced using a refined ash emboss which
gives a sleek grained texture, enhancing the
overall well-finished look of the design. Two

Both have matching MFCs by Egger.
The COVAREN range has introduced the
new Trojan PB. The smoky brown design

extremely realistic and natural surface feel.
It’s also ideally suited, with a wide choice of
different solid colours, to create a unique

And finally, the 3-colour print COVAREN
Cobra 2 SC is a fantasy design that picks up
on the current trend towards irregular
stripes and geometric patterns. An overall
soft grey tone is combined with subtle
charcoal highlights and mid-grey
undertones, completed with a soft coat
surface emboss to create a finely polished

harmonious atmosphere. Different

“Solid stainless steel is regarded as the Rolls Royce of tapmaterials as it offers a premium build quality and looks great. It’s also design-compatible with other stainless steel productsthat are commonly found in the kitchen.“Steve Rutter - Marketing Operations Manager, Franke.
Industry Insight:“Stainless steel is definitely ‘the green
choice’ when it comes to choosing the
type of material for your new taps and
fittings. The best products on the
market are not only manufactured from
100% non-toxic and naturally hygienic
solid stainless steel, but are even
manufactured without using chemical
plating or chroming processes, which is
common with most standard brassware.
As such, there are no toxic effluents
produced during the hand finishing
process. An average 60% of stainless
steel materials are generated from
recycled material and this is slowly
increasing, especially when we consider
that stainless steel is 100% recyclable.
“So, why use stainless steel to make
taps? Aside from the above, the last few
years have seen new regulations limit
the amount of lead that can be
contained in brass or other materials
used to manufacture taps. As such,
stainless steel easily complies with these
exacting standards and, furthermore, its
surface is almost non-porous making it
100% stable. Far more hygienic and
easy to maintain, stainless steel offers
absolutely no risk of surface flaking or
fading, found in traditionally chromed
or plated brass materials, making it not
only ideal for taps but other kitchen and
bathroom appliances.”

development at Decorative Panels
Lamination, dp-BioCote® Quartz is here
and ready to clean up in the marketplace.
Working as a partner company with
BioCote®, Decorative Panels Lamination has
launched a range of commercially available
sheet materials that offers exceptional abrasion
and antibacterial properties. The manufacturing
process of the surface material and the addition
of the BioCote® additive results in the surface
being highly abrasion resistant - according to
Decorative Panels, more so than a standard
high pressure worktop. When tested against
resistance to clinical cleaning products dp-
BioCote® Quartz provides excellent results in all
areas. Testing the parameters with regards to
wet and dry heat, as well as a number of liquids
that commonly leave distinctive marks, the
product also passes with flying colours.

the surface of the product dp-BioCote®
Quartz offers a surface which is up to 99.9%
germ free, achieved by inhibiting the
growth of bacteria, micro-organisms, fungi
and mould. The surface is also protected
against the growth of staining and odour-
causing microbes which may prematurely
degrade the material.
Both in laboratory and real life conditions,
BioCote® has been proven effective against a
wide range of clinically significant bacteria
including MRSA, MSSA, E.coli, Legionella
pneumophila, Pseudomonas aeruginosa,
Salmonella typhimurium and enteritidis,
Listeria monocytogenes, VRE, Campylobacter
and Novovirus. Tests have shown that within
just 15 minutes microbial contamination has
reduced by up to 80% and that after two
hours reductions of up to 99.9% can be
expected. Very significantly, the BioCote®
additive not only acts in minutes, it also
works continuously and lasts a lifetime
without degradation.
dp-BioCote® Quartz has been launched
as a range of six décors: three popular
wood-grains and three unicolours available
for lamination across the extensive range of
substrate materials available from Decorative

Sicam has always been a nice show to visit.
Well organised, easy to find your way
around and with a wide selection of
products for kitchen furniture manufacturers to
see, it always had a lot to offer Italian
manufacturers. But this year something had
changed - something much more than just the
days the fair was open. Visitor numbers may
have been slightly down on last year, especially
on the opening day, but there was a buzz, an
enthusiasm, a real optimism coming from the
exhibitors: Sicam has become a real
international attraction and it has really started
to make its mark on the world market.
“The fair has started very well,”
commented Timo Stiegler from Vauth-Sagel’s
stand on day two. “Important people are
coming and the quality of visitors is very high.
Sicam has definitely become more international
this year. We have had visitors from as far away
as New Zealand and Brazil, Scandinavia and
from across a wider Europe.”
There’s also been a change in the attitude
of exhibitors to Sicam: “We showed prototypes
at Interzum,” continues Timo. “Now, at Sicam,
we are ready for production and we are taking
orders.”
It’s a view echoed by many. “Sicam is a very
international fair, not just Italian,” commented
Tobias Lorenz from a packed Süddekor stand.
“We’ve seen visitors from Central and Southern
Europe, Eastern Europe - and more than 20% of
the visitors to our booth were from Germany.”
He attributes Sicam’s success to the timing of
the fair in mid-October, adding, “It is three
months ahead of IMM in Köln, so it makes it
possible for decisions to be made earlier.”
Whilst many of the stands were reminiscent
of Interzum presentations, products that were
shown tentatively as prototypes in Germany
were now production-ready and available for
orders to be taken. There had been some subtle
twists - Union Knopf’s Raw Level now had an
injection of bright colour and Samet’s Ela hinge
cover was available in fashion colours. The level
of innovation seemed altogether higher and in
the following pages you’ll find some truly
remarkable products that add not only
functionality to great kitchen furniture designs,
they add consumer appeal.
There were innovations to be found among
the printers and décor specialists, too: oak
remains the décor of choice but the look and
feel of décor products has reached a new level
of authenticity. As Claudia Hiepel so rightly
commented from the Renolit stand, “Only
imitation can save the real material.”
The timing for next year’s Sicam will be
announced in forthcoming issues. Don’t miss
out! Head for Pordenone!

Salice has realised the desire to giveaesthetic appeal to a functional fitting
with its new and very sleek Lapis hinge.Twelve colours and 144 combinations
will make Lapis popular withmanufacturers and retailers alike who
want sophistication and designappeal inside as well as out.
If ever a hinge could be described as sexy,
then surely Salice’s new Lapis deserves
the title. A new system for Silentia hinges,
Lapis has a damping system integrated into
the cup and works with longitudinal Domi
snap-on mounting plates (BAP).
The design consists of two covers which
move with the hinge elements, hiding the
technical components and providing
refined aesthetics to complement and
enhance the design of furniture. There are
12 finishes ranging from white to
sophisticated dark silver, chrome and high-
tech. Lapis offers 144 possible combinations
which meet the needs of almost any kind of
furniture. At present, hinges are available
for 0mm and 9mm cranking for doors of a
minimum of 16mm thickness, with 13.5mm
deep cup, 110º opening and door drilling
pattern K from 3-6mm.
Also shown at Sicam were standard
hinges sporting Salice’s Titanium finish
(picture 5). Apart from aesthetics, the
Titanium finish offers a higher degree of
corrosion resistance.
Two further recent developments from
Salice’s Bortoluzzi brand were also shown at
Sicam this year: the S10 Slider (pictures 1 to
3 above), a co-planar sliding system for
doors up to 10kg, which will go down well
with manufacturers of studio kitchens, etc;
and the Bortoluzzi Pocket Door System
(picture 4). The Pocket Door System is
designed for doors of up to 30kg and
heights of up to 2.5 metres (800mm wide
and 30mm thick).

kitchen, every design eventuality has been
covered. For the bedroom, pull out pivoting suit
racks and mirrors, under mounted pull out
clothes hangers and side mounted trouser
holders are just a few of the practical solutions
on offer to maximise space.
Whilst the Elite range boasts thick chrome
plated wire accessories - which have been
created in Vibo’s own chrome plating facilities - it
also offers high quality, soft-close slide
mechanisms and full extension for ease of use.
The Eco range offers a competitively priced,
equally stylish, alternative for those looking for a
chic, space saving solution in the home.
Recent figures suggest that we
spend more time in the
kitchen than ever before,
averaging over two hours a day.
This is mainly due to the multi-
functional living concept that is
currently sweeping across Europe.
But, as we change the way we use
our kitchens, clever companies like
Atim and Vibo are changing the
way we design them.
Functional, stylish and ideal for
hiding items you don’t need all the
time, Italian furniture specialist Atim
offers a range of extending products
that can be assembled as and when
you need them. On its stand at Sicam,
ironing boards, peninsular units, tables
and benches with upholstered cushions
were all cleverly demonstrated and
neatly hidden away under worksurfaces
and behind fascias. Simple to erect,
sturdy and stable, these products will
add interest to larger kitchens and
functionality to utility rooms and
compact kitchens.

Fashion plays a huge
part in furniture
design,” explains
Michael Pohl, Managing
Director of Union Knopf.
“Today, our company name
is associated in the furniture
industry with handles but it was originally formed
in 1911 as a button manufacturer. This link to the
world of fashion certainly plays an important role
in the company today.
“Design trends are constantly changing.
Fashion moves at a faster pace than the furniture
industry, so trends tend to filter down slowly to
furniture manufacturers. This isn’t true for Union
Knopf. We work alongside our in-house fashion
designers to incorporate current catwalk trends
into our handle designs, allowing us to showcase
styles that are still current in the fashion industry.
“At this year’s Sicam, it was clear to see a shift
away from vintage inspired designs. Instead,
designers are focusing on colours that represent
power, joie de vivre and creativity. Looking
forward, this trend will also include subtle shades
and contrasting colours that offer a real style

statement. Dark reds and blues are proving
popular on the catwalk this season so you’re sure
to see these colours appear at next year’s Sicam.
“Texture is also playing a role in today’s
designs and it could be seen on many of the décor
stands at the show. Structure, metal and fabric
combinations are becoming more obvious in
handle design, with industrial character once
again taking centre stage.
"Satin colours like chrome and stainless steel
finishes are still going to be dominant in the
market because consumers are looking to match
their kitchens to their appliances – this is why
industrial style traits reappear time and again. It
would seem, however, that modern day
fashionista’s attitudes to reusing good quality
basics and incorporating high-fashion accessories
into their look is being reflected in interiors across
Europe. We’re seeing a trend for people replacing
smaller items in the kitchen, like handles, to create
a brand new look. This has led Union Knopf to
create some really edgy designs in its RAW Level®
range that can be incorporated into any home.”

Ronald Weber, the CEO of Grass, had
plenty to smile about on the stand at
Sicam this year. His company has sailed
ahead with the introduction of a class-leading
development of the company’s proven
Sensomatic - this time for the opening and
closing of refrigerator doors.
Newest of the new, Sensomatic Refrigerator
is perfect for the handle-less kitchen. Busy chefs
are going to love it every bit as much as style
hunters who want the sleekest kitchen design
on the market - and the odd gadget to impress
friends at dinner parties. Simply press the door
to release (a finger or a shoulder, it really
doesn’t matter) and it swings open effortlessly.
This clever little piece of easy-to-fit wizardry
really doesn’t care whether you close the door
gently, close it with a slam, or don’t close it
fully at all. The Sensomatic system cushions the
door with a soft close function - and if you
leave it partially open by accident for more than
three seconds, it will pull the door gently to a
close for you. The software enables adjustment
to suit different weights of refrigerator door and
the system can be top or bottom mounted and,
with the exception of the hook that connects
with the door, the whole unit can be hidden
discreetly behind a panel of your design.

Steve Robinson is
a self-proclaimed
colour junkie
who has spent the last
20 years pushing the
boundaries of glass
design. Not content
with offering flat
colours and plain designs, the former
Pembrokeshire rocker has delved into the
world of glass splashbacks and tiles,
incorporating texture, deep precise colours
and asymmetrical shapes into his work.
“It’s a different take on glass,” explains
Steve, owner of Steve Robinson Glass. “But
there’s no secret to how I create such depth
in my designs. I use glass enamel, which is
extremely adaptable and versatile. It’s this
material that allows me to replicate the
designs I have in my head without any
limitations.”
A stickler for getting the job done right,
Steve adds, “I want to be able to create
something that immediately screams ‘wow’
to the customer. Even when I’m working on
a small glass tile, I want to be able to see
miniature galaxies of bubbles gathering
around vibrant shots of colour and
unpredictable texture.”
Steve’s love affair with glass has seen him
bring colour to life. His fascination with glass
lies in the relationship between light and the
illumination of colour. By manipulating both,
he creates clever illusions. Designs include
rippling water, sand dunes and swaying
leaves that, with clever positioned lighting in
a kitchen or bathroom, can animate Steve’s
bespoke designs.
It’s a technique that has caught the
attention of retail giant, John Lewis, who
has been selling Steve’s designs for four
years. “John Lewis wanted me to create
some exclusive designs to complement its
kitchen range. They’re a little different and
because of that, my designs have caught
the eye and the imagination of its
customers,” explains Steve. “I’m currently
working on some new designs for its 2014
collection but it’s all very hush-hush at the
moment – watch this space.”
Reading’s Hilton Hotel dining room and
lobby has also been transformed by Steve’s
vibrant Sea Urchin inspired glass panels. An
interesting name choice, perhaps, but his
work is influenced heavily by the sea, thanks
to his coastal location in St Davids,
Pembrokshire. “From shell shaped designs
and sand textures, to abstract mystical sea
creatures, each design, however small, tells
a story,” Steve continues. “For a designer
that makes each product by hand, each
design is equally important.”
So what can we expect to see more of
in the future? Steve explains, “The trend for
heavy textures and individualism is already
starting to shape the glass industry. Whilst
there will still be a market for symmetrical,
1D tiles, people are opening their eyes to
more unique designs that reflect them. It’s
certainly an interesting time for the glass
industry and an exciting time for Steve
Robinson Glass.”

Decorative glass designer and an emerging

trademark floral designs. Inspired by her
popular bespoke splashbacks design service, her

natural wood effect. With a warm Autumnal look,
inspired by British woodlands, customers are able
to mix and match a range of different depths and
visual textures to create something truly unique.
Made from toughened glass and hand illustrated, the range features versatile wood effects

vintage china and her signature florals, the collection of over thirty designs vary in
complexity and contrast. From delicate to bold, masculine to feminine, and contemporary
to traditional, it enables the collection to be more collaborative with the customer’s needs.
It also allows you to co-ordinate with a mixture of kitchen palettes, including sophisticated
gold, illustrative whites and homely pastels. Whether a statement piece, or a subtle
backdrop, glass designs like maple can work in every home.

Family run for over 40 years, GX Glass has seen many
trends come and go but it would seem that glass is
the new ‘it’ product to have in the home. Joanna
Lush, Marketing Manager at GX Glass, explains more:
“In the last few years there has been a huge surge
of interest in glass design. From large, digital prints to
bespoke artwork, glass is becoming a popular material
thanks to recent product innovation and its natural
versatility. Not only is it hardwearing, glass is non-
porous and, thanks to new technology, can be coated
with an antibacterial compound to reduce germs -
making it ideal for use in the kitchen.
“We’re now seeing fewer up stands. Instead, we’re
being asked to create complete glass splash backs for
both commercial and residential use. A practical
solution for many, designers are approaching us with
exact colour requirements, which can be reproduced in
our colour matching facility.
“Whilst large b2b companies are still drawn to
neutral colours and edge on the side of caution with
greys, creams and whites, there has been a dramatic
increase in the number of bright colours being
requested by consumers. Lime greens, bright oranges
and shocking pinks are being favoured for the kitchen,
along with abstract designs and unique artwork. It
would seem that the brighter and bolder, the better,
when looking to create a personal stamp in the home.”

Available in 6 stunning colours and featuring a deeper grain than isstandard with textured woodgrain vinyls, Legno offers affordable luxury.
ECF’s Tressell style door in a matt Mussell finishdemonstrates how natural tones can addsophistication to any kitchen.
• The Handleless Door
Already a popular favourite, the trend for
handleless doors is set to continue into 2014
thanks to its sleek, linear design. “On trend designs
should be attainable to all,” explains Phill. “ECF has
introduced two designs, Elle and Gallio, to its
made-to-measure Goscote range. Not only are
they bang on trend, each design is available in a
plethora of finish options to make it truly unique to
you.” Whilst this design is proving popular, the
handle market is seeing changes too. Phill adds,
“We’re seeing more subtle designs and colours
dominating the market. Glass is making a
comeback too - adding understated glamour to
any room.”
• Shaker Doors
A new take on a classic, ECF’s Shaker door range
has taken on a modern twist. The new, chic Orion,
creates the illusion of a glass door. “The brilliant
white High Gloss acrylic faced construction creates
the look of glass and blends perfectly into any
kitchen style,” explains Phill. “This made to
measure style is going to be big news in 2014 as
the trend for glass in the kitchen grows stronger.”
• Finishes
Neutral finishes will continue to be a popular
choice in 2014 - a trend that can clearly be seen in
ECF’s portfolio of classic finishes. “High Gloss
Mussel, Matt Kashmir and Magnolia are the colours
to look out for next year,” says Phill. “Choosing a
neutral colour in your kitchen offers a timeless
quality - your kitchen will always have a
contemporary feel.”
Continuing the theme of neutral, natural
colours, painted woodgrain effects are also making
a comeback. “Texture has been slowing creeping
into kitchen design in recent years but ECF expect
finishes like our Legno textured vinyl woodgrain to
be a growing trend in 2014,” explains Phill. “To
make the finish look as natural as possible, Legno
features an open pore grain structure which is
deeper than standard, textured woodgrain vinyls,”
he adds. It is available in 6 striking shades: Dakar,
Ivory, Magnolia, Mussel, Stone Grey and White.
• Storage Solutions
Utilising the space in your kitchen is certainly not a
new concept but making the solution smaller and
more adaptable, whilst remaining just as efficient is
key. Phill explains, “ECF’s range of Innostor Plus
storage solutions allow even the smallest of
cupboard spaces to be used effectively.” The
150mm Base Pull-out Plus features a soft closing
action, full extension runners and a framework
design that allows universal access. Phill adds, “It
really allows you to make the most of your
kitchen’s storage potential, proving that ECF can
supply the perfect solution for both the inside and
outside of your kitchen.”

“British designers seem to be exploring new, ever more interesting
textured surfaces not only for doors but also for end panels and wall
coverings. This type of design creates a consistent flow that can be
easily incorporated into other areas of the home. Ideally suited for
multifunction living spaces, Crystal Doors’ shallow Tree Bark foil in high

“Stainless steel is a popular choice in the kitchen as it requires
minimum care but still offers a high resistance to heat and it doesn’t
stain. The I F flat edge from BLANCO combines appealing aesthetics
and practical benefits, with the 1mm profile sitting almost flush with
the work surface, creating a sleek, streamlined effect. The low profile

painted colour bring an individuality that consumers are seeking.
Favoured designed for 2014 will still be streamlined and

“From 2014, Granite sink manufacturer SCHOCK will be supplying its
Waterfall designer sink range in ‘Rouge’ - an intense shade of red. The
new colourway, which will no doubt be loved by design aficionados
and kitchen individualists, symbolises optimism and joie de vivre, luck,
energy and love - something consumers look for when faced with
current economic gloom. When it comes to coloured kitchen design,
red can have an activating effect - creating an eye-catching appliance

“We’re finding that the two-tone trend is really taking off and for that
reason our new kitchens follow this design style. The two-tone trend
presents real advantages as the design possibilities are endless and work
well in contemporary and more classic kitchens. Our Cambourne
Natural Oak with Cambourne Cream island is a great example of how
mixing tones and finishes (timber effect painted door) works brilliantly
in a more classic setting offering a beautiful contrast. This can then be
gentle blend into other living spaces.”

Claudia Küchen -Designer, Schattdecor.“There are several emerging trends in the furnituremarket. There is a target for dark colours and for verylight colours. There is a white trend with whitewashedeffects - not solid, clinical, cold white - and vintageeffects. This combines well with woodgrains, which wesee as part of the same trend. Woodgrains themselves
provide the backgrounds for strong accessory colours such as reds, blues andyellows from fashion. Oak remains the strongest but we are also seeing walnut, pinewoods, ash, maple and elder. The new darks, such as Cadbury Oak, tend to bemore elegant and are perfect for upmarket office and kitchen furniture. Where oncewe had grey walnuts, now we have Cappuccino. Red and yellow tints do still comeinto the dark woodgrains but they are brought into the décor in a natural way.
“Patterns are no longer eye-catching; they have become almost optical solidswith a structure, sometimes hand-crafted, sometimes almost fantasy but always witha very natural woodgrain. Specific, eye-catching products are being developed fordigital printing - anything from denim to floorboards which have been used before.Authenticity is the key.”

Les Wicks - Head of ProductManagement, Beko Plc.
“If a colourful kitchen appliance is too much of a radicalchange for consumers to make, the look of cooker
handles and knobs will be important in creating a stylestatement, as will the availability of finishes like mirror
glass which help to make a cooking appliance more ofan interior design feature than a useful piece of kit. For
induction models that do not have handles or knobs, slider touch controlswill be popular as they look sleek and offer maximum control when
cooking. In order to keep their appliances looking as good as the day theybought them, many consumers will demand easy cleaning solutions for
their cooking appliances. Examples include nano oleophobic coatings andpyrolytic cycles, which will help ease the burden of day-to-day chores.”

“Consumers are looking for something different and unique in order tocreate a statement in the kitchen, and we expect design to continue tobe a key purchasing trend for the foreseeable future. Manufacturers arenow developing more appliances that make use of interesting shapesand textures in order to fulfil the demand from the consumer.
“Whilst it would seem that many kitchen manufacturers arestepping away from bright, bold colours, the market for colouredappliances in the UK is growing. We believe this increased uptake incoloured models is due to the consumer’s renewed focus on the homeand its interior design. Keen to make their property look the best it can, updating the home with new appliances can refresh a kitchen withoutthe need to spend a small fortune on redesigning the space. We’re alsoseeing people choose appliances that reflect their personality andindividual tastes - choosing their favourite colours, styles andexperimenting with different finishes. They want products that willmake them happy, and brightly coloured appliances are sure to cheer.”

“Each project varies depending on the

For most people, the colour of the
bathroom and the items installed are
usually a style decision. But, when you're
faced with dementia, studies have shown
that contrasting colours can help differ-
entiate between individual bathroom
facilities. “We often use blue and green
tiles behind the toilet and basin to draw
attention to them,” explains Thom. “Each
bathroom has a yellow door and a hand
drawn pictogram of either a toilet, shower
or bath to make the process as simple as
possible.”
To limit stress and anxiety, a continual
floor colour is also used. “If visually
impaired residents, or those with dementia,
see a drastic change in floor colour, it can
be represented as a steep drop,” says
Thom. “Whilst we tend to use blues and
greens throughout the building to limit this
problem, it is important to use slightly
different floor designs or décors in each
room to help residents pinpoint where they
are and why they're there.”
When it comes to sanitaryware and
brassware, familiarity is key when designing
a bathroom. “More recognisable to many
elderly residents, traditional tap designs
with cross heads and manual shower
systems are chosen to limit confusion,” adds
Thom. “Water temperature is best if
controlled to eradicate scalding and non-
slip flooring is used throughout the
bathrooms and en-suites.”
Accessibility to all facilities in the
bathroom is of primary importance. “From
a designer's view point, the rooms need to
reflect a Doc M layout - big enough to
incorporate a wheelchair and for carers to
assist in the bathing and hoisting of
individuals safely, whilst keeping the
resident's dignity intact. Tests showed that
by introducing gentle massage and
Chromotherapy (colour therapy), residents
were more likely to remember a positive
experience and be more at ease next time.”
There are grants available to some of
the elderly and less able for the refitting of
bathrooms, so this is definitely a sector not
to be ignored.

“Consultation is an integral part of our design process, and we talk toeveryone who might be involved in using such bathroom equipment. For ourrecently introduced PLUS track system, we worked with users to see how theyare able to move around a bathroom and how horizontal flexibility wouldbenefit them. But we don’t stop there - we also talk to carers to ask themhow they work and also hygiene specialists, which is particularly importantwhen designing for multi-user installations.”Andrew Lowndes - UK Sales Manager, Pressalit Care.

When it comes to accessible bathing,
providing customers with the best
possible bathing experience is key.
Understanding their needs and tastes is
paramount, but knowing how to tailor an
accessible bathroom to those needs and
tastes is equally important.
‘Inclusive design’ is a buzzword often
used in product design. But what does it
really mean, and what should you be looking
for when it comes to creating bathing and
showering solutions?
Joanna Talbot, Sales and Marketing
Manager at Eurocare Showers, says, “Over
the last decade, the accessible bathing
industry has changed dramatically. An ageing
population and a focus on maintaining
independence is seeing more and more
people remain in their own homes as they
grow older, and a market that was once the
preserve of ‘care’ products, is now delivering
far more extensive product choice.
“With this evolution in the market comes
a greater focus on aesthetics than ever before,
as end users demand products that will fit
comfortably from a design point of view into
mainstream bathrooms and homes.”
But are today’s retailers fully considering
Sliding doors look great in any bathroom. Modern andstylish, they are suitable for broad-ranging bathing
needs and are ideal for multi-user households.
Inclusive design in action: framed glass enhances visibility withoutcompromising on style. Eurocare panels and posts are available ina range of finishes and glazing options.
The ultra-low threshold Jubilee bathoffers a more conventional bathing
experience. Eurocare’s full-length bathsare available with or without in-built
seats, and feature inward-opening doors.
The Adagio Ancora bath is ideal forpeople with reduced mobility, featuringa high, in-built seat that makes sittingand standing easier for users. If theAncora is installed to replace aconventional sized bath, infillcupboards are available (as pictured).

the current and future needs of accessible
bathroom users when selecting products
to sell?
Rica, a consumer research organisation
for older and disabled people, defines
inclusive design as “the design of
mainstream products and services that are
as accessible and usable by as many people
as possible,” and believes that incorporating
features that help make products more
usable for people with disabilities often
make them more user friendly for everyone.
In the accessible bathing market, where
the vast majority of installations are now led
by a general need for greater accessibility as
opposed to a specific care need, inclusive
design comes into its own. Offering
products that have been designed to
provide greater accessibility for end users
leaves retailers with fewer headaches; as well
as delivering genuine value for the user.
“There are many mainstream products
making claims about their suitability for use
in accessible bathing,” says Joanna. “But
have those products been specifically
designed to cater for the needs of an
ageing population and make bathing and
showering easier and safer?
“Is a heavy glass enclosure the right
choice for an elderly, frail user? Is frameless
glass suitable for people in later life with
reduced vision? Have the slip risks of the
showering area been considered? Are
handles easy to use; do posts provide
support; and are hinges designed to
maximise access?
“If the answer to these and other
questions is no, problems will be
encountered when the end user discovers
that the finished room looks fantastic, but
on a practical level simply doesn’t deliver
what they need.”
Customers have high expectations, and
knowing what is - and what isn’t -
achievable, and being able to advise your
customers accordingly becomes invaluable.
Finding a manufacturer that has in-depth
knowledge of the market and is prepared to
share it with you will save you valuable time
and resources - not to mention potential
problems further down the line when it
comes to fitting the products.
Demand for accessible bathing is on the
increase, and - certainly in terms of
aesthetics - has never been closer to
mainstream bathing. Product choice is at an
all-time high. Adopting the principles of
inclusive design, and offering products that
have been created for purpose by
manufacturers who understand the needs
of end users, will avoid potential problems
and help you deliver exactly the right
balance of style and substance, creating
truly accessible bathrooms that deliver to
end user needs.

ultimate usability
As emphasis is placed increasingly on
home adaptations, the importance of
having a bathroom that meets the needs
of the individual, whatever their circumstances,
becomes increasingly important. Whether this is
due to reduced functionality or limited mobility,
young or old, the importance of a well-fitted
and appropriate home bathroom cannot be
underestimated.
The new Matrix range of washbasins from
Pressalit Care is a perfect example of how a design
led approach has resulted in a range of basins that
can be used in both the home and more
demanding care environments, and provides
support without compromising on safety.
The Matrix range comprises four styles.
Matrix Small is a narrower washbasin with
two integrated handrails designed for domestic
bathrooms where a practical basin is required.
The rounded handrails are cast into the marble
bowl, still leaving sufficient space for a wheel-
chair to manoeuvre and for the user to reach
the taps without difficulty.
Designed for rooms with more space, the
Matrix Large vanity washbasin is designed so
that wheelchair users can position themselves
close to the basin in comfort. The fully tested,
rounded handrails that are cast into the bowl
give support when the user has to stand or sit
down, helping give the user more
independence.
The Matrix Angle is the third in the
range. The curved front edge provides maxi-
mum freedom of movement around the
washbasin for both users and helpers. Its special
shape makes it ideal for installation in a corner,
right or left facing versions available. The extra-
long handrails make it possible for wheelchair
users to move around horizontally and rise to a
standing position with maximum safety and
support. The basin also has a front drip tray to
prevent water dripping.
Finally, the Matrix Curve has a more
traditional soft shape, without handrails and is
ideal for situations where consideration must be
given to space.
All the Matrix washbasins can be fitted in a
fixed position, or for added flexibility the Matrix
Small can be installed with Pressalit Care’s Select
Basin Bracket, which allows the basin to be
adjusted by a height of 300mm, either by an
electronic lever or wired hand control. Indeed,
where space is tight or awkward, selected basins
can also be fitted onto Pressalit Care’s Plus track
system, which allows horizontal movement as
well as vertical for maximum flexibility.
The Matrix washbasins are available with a
range of accessories, including taps, modular
shelves and baskets, and can be used alongside
Pressalit Care’s extensive range of grab rails and
support arms.

range of Matrix washbasins please visit

Matrix Small offers domesticbathroom users a stylish,
practical basin solution thatincludes two integrated handrails
that can also be used as towelrails. Here the basin is installed
with Pressalit Care’s heightadjustable Select Basin Bracket.
The Matrix Large is a wider vanitywashbasin with integrated handrails
at both the front and sides, designedfor rooms with more space.
The Matrix Angle has been designedto provide maximum freedom ofmovement around the washbasinfor both users and helpers. Itsspecial shape makes it ideal forinstallation in a corner.

The flexibility of the Duo BasinFrame means that the user can
move the basin and mirror to theoptimum height for them, whilst
its décor panels can be decoratedto the style of the home.
The Doc M has been given a fresh new look with a modern cistern andWC seat. The cistern is a smoother, narrow option and the WC Seat hasbeen specifically designed to fit the WC Pan. Each seat contains twosecuring buffers that eliminate any lateral movement when accessing froma wheelchair - crucial for confidence and stability of the user.
The new Walk-in-Shower Bath provides easy access for showering and bathing. It’s also supplied with a sturdy plexi-glass seat and left or right hand opening.
Strengthening its Independent Living portfolio, Barwood Products
has launched the Duo range. Consisting of baths, rising basin
and WC frames and shower doors, each product has been
designed to not only ease showering and bathing for those with a
disability but also to be stylish and comfortable when used by other
members of the family.
The Walk-in-Shower Bath, which includes a fixed shower screen,
removable plexi-glass seat, glass door and headrest, allows total
accessibility when bathing or showering. Not only is it a stylish
addition to any bathroom, the over-bath shower can be used by the
whole family, whilst those with restricted mobility can step into the
Walk-in-Shower Bath by using the door. The bath can also be used in a
conventional fashion or you can rest on the discreet plexi-seat while
the bath fills. The cleverly designed seat can be used when showering
if standing is challenging.
For ultimate flexibility in the bathroom, the Duo range also
includes two rise and fall frames for the basin and WC. Adjusted with a
handheld control, the basin frame has a mechanism to stop it
dropping down on to the legs of the user, whilst the WC frame, which
comes complete with a 6-litre flushing cistern, enables the user to
move the WC to its optimum height. It then rises once again to help
the user stand or be transferred to a wheelchair.
To complete its collection of family-friendly sanitaryware, the Duo
range also offers shower doors and panels in a range of sizes to suit
your needs. Installed onto shower trays or directly onto a wet-floor
installation, a Barwood bathroom offers a practical and stylish solution
to suit the whole family.

Industry insight:Compact sanitaryware has been one of the most important factors
in RAK Ceramics’ success over the last 13 years.
“The ever-increasing demand for smaller sanitaryware has
come from both professionals and from consumers, who are now
far more aware that bathrooms should be designed correctly to
enable proper use. Manufacturers can no longer dictate to this
more educated market. If we mostly have small bathrooms then
we need correct dimensions, in order for toilets and basins to fit.
“When I started in the bathroom industry in 1978, all
manufacturers were oblivious to size - but with this greater
consumer awareness came the introduction of smaller formats. This
process is accelerating but it’s not a new phenomenon; it was back
in 2002 that I designed our first range, called ‘Compact’ where the
toilet projection was only 615mm.
“There are few volume sanitaryware products without compact
sizes now, but we also have other issues to respond to, like
hygiene, comfort height, furniture etc. Just like other home
improvement sectors, sanitaryware manufacturers are listening
more and more to the end user and finding out what they really
want, creating a natural evolution.
“Few of us can predict the future - but the clear message from
the last 10-15 years is that manufacturers must offer their customers
choice, to ensure satisfaction and a successful end result.”
Rob Jull -Managing Director,RAK Ceramics UK Limited.

William Garvey has been creating
luxury wooden bathroom
furniture for over 40 years. The
company's ability to transform wood into
stunning bespoke bathroom options has
resulted in commissions for such diverse
applications as private jets, super yachts and
spas. Every design is original - but the
material used remains unchanged: wood.
“Subtle interiors call for strength and
quality in design,” explains Bill Garvey,
Managing Director of William Garvey. “If
you want to create a glamorous looking
bathroom, seen only in luxury boutique
spas, wellness retreats and five-star resorts,
then you need to create a perfect balance
between classically-inspired design and
minimalist detailing.”
Effortlessly beautiful, a wood finish
would seem to tick all the boxes and is
proving a popular choice for those looking
to create their very own wellness centre in
the home. There has also been a slight shift
away from ceramic in a bid to create
individualism in design. But whilst wood
certainly looks the part, to play a lead roll in
any bathroom, it must be practical and
hygienic. It also needs to be sufficiently able
to withstand not just a light shower but a
heavy deluge of water.
“You have to be sure you’re using the
right wood,” admits Bill. “The furniture we
make is from 2.5mm teak veneer which is
produced using specialist imported marine
ply. We do this to ensure we eliminate the
chance of the wood splitting when left for a
long time and then soaked. This is what
would happen if we were to use solid
timber. Teak works well in humid climates so
is ideal for creating showrooms and baths. It
also holds a natural antiseptic in its oils
which will eliminate unwanted germs,
meaning a cleaner and more mold-free
environment.”
Incorporating wood into bathroom
displays doesn’t have to involve a serious
style overhaul. “Whether customers opt for a
single introduction of wood or commit to an
all-wood scheme, you can still create a
relaxation hub in the home with the
minimum of fuss,” explains Bill. “Displaying
shower walls and trays, plunge bathtubs to
fit compact spaces or even outdoor
additions for the garden or balcony can offer
customers design inspiration. The great
thing about wood is its resilient and flexible
traits can mould around the individual - in
the process, creating a much needed space
that offers a sense of calm and serenity.”

“Opt for sanitaryware with sensuous lines thatconjure up images of a droplet of water or alusciously smooth pebble. This can be as dramaticas you would like it to be; whether it’s just subtlerounded curves on a piece of furniture or a basinwhich actually resembles a splash of water.”Darren Paxford - National Sales Manager, VitrA.
“Homeowners now expect more from theirbathroom, desiring it to be what I woulddescribe as a ‘functional haven’ as opposed toan area which is simply there for practicalreasons.”Matt Earle - Director, Robert Lee Distribution.
Market Insight: • Is there extra profit in
products which promote
relaxation and wellbeing?
Bathrooms have evolved over the
years to become much more than
small white boxes for functional
bathing. The trend for wellbeing
means the bathroom has become a
sanctuary where we can spend
some time and recover from the
stresses of a busy day. As such, there
is a market for any product which
can help achieve this and
corresponding profits to be made,
over and above the bare essentials
of basin, toilet and bath.
• Is demand growing for spa
products?
While still a niche sector in the UK,
the market is being driven by a
growing interest from people who
want to take care of themselves and
reconnect with nature. Home spa
products satisfy this desire for
wellness solutions. More money
spent on the bathroom than the
kitchen is becoming more common
- in our busy lives we are now
eating less at home, but are in more
need of relaxation time in the
wellness room of the house.
• Are spas, saunas and steam
rooms becoming more
affordable?
Home spas, saunas and steam
rooms were once a luxury product
with an expensive price tag. Now,
they are starting to become more
mainstream as people seek out a
natural and organic experience
within the home. Spa products that
can be customised allow consumers
to tailor their spa experiences to suit
both their preference and budget.

The Glass sauna portfolio now boasts a stunning newradiant sauna, Hita. It combines flair, innovation and
functionality with I-Radium’s infra-red, radianttechnology applied to wood. Hita was conceived
through collaboration with architect Enzo Berti, as “aplace to live,” a well-being system that contemplatesthe whole sauna ritual in its entirety; offering an area
for preparation, a space for the sauna itself and finally aplace to relax before approaching the outside world
again. These three stages have been perfectlyincorporated into a unique, made-to-measure project.

Robin Levien -
International Designer, Ideal Standard:
“The British bathroom industry has long been
influenced by continental Europe, and this latest
evolution in the wash basin area will see the vanity
basin creeping into the UK market. The basin forms a
part of our daily ritual, and these rectangular ceramic basins,
with combined storage cabinets fitted snugly underneath,
help to manage the clutter that is an inevitable part of
everyday life. The flat deck area of the vanity basin makes
them easier to clean and provides surface storage space.
However, given their sizeable dimensions they are better
suited to the main bathroom, rather than a cloakroom
bathroom under-the-stairs.”

Peter Elson - Sales and Marketing Director, Ellis Furniture:
“At Ellis Furniture we’re noticing a trend for warm, neutral tones
that help to create the perfect backdrop to unwind and relax. Our
new Hydra in Chocolate Grey offers affordable designer styling
and on trend natural tones. The horizontal grain of Hydra has
become widespread in contemporary bathrooms after years at the
cutting edge of interior design. The Chocolate Grey gives the sleek style
of the grain a rich, sumptuous finish. Shown here in a contemporary
setting, the 18mm slab doors with matt finish and 2mm matching edging
work equally well in a more traditional design too.”

to create a sanctuary in their bathroom

boutique hotel inspired products.
Integrated solutions and handless
products support the trend and clever
combinations of fitted and modular
designs will create this desired look.

Sophy Watkinson -
Marketing Manager,
Sagittarius Taps:
“Ultra contemporary bathroom brassware is
perennially popular and this is a trend that
is set to continue into next year. Highly
polished chrome finishes will remain in high
demand, but you can expect to see designs
that have a European design influence.
Brassware with smooth, flowing lines and
soft edges add sophistication and will start
to rival modern, angular style brassware.
Consumers today are looking for added
value when it comes to brassware and
products that offer a high attention to
detail, like our new Soho collection
(pictured above) that creates a sense of
style in the bathroom.”

Philippe Grohe - Head of
Axor, Hansgrohe:
“Design should flow. With our
Axor ShowerProducts, designed
by Front, we want to draw
attention to the hidden aesthetics
of technology in a particularly elegant way,
turning pipes, joints, valves and funnels into a
charming design object. Front show us how
traditionally purpose-specific components of a
shower can be transformed into a visually
appealing design object. This lets the customary
boundaries between the bathroom and living
area disappear through the addition of an
elegant piece of furniture.” Pictured left, Axor

Claire Lambert -
Brand Director, Showerwall:
“The mainline trend for bathroom
surfacing centres on natural colours and
materials because it offers long-lasting
style that won’t date, as well as a private
sanctuary feel. Showerwall’s brand of

like granite and marble. Zamora Marble
