PRESIDENT’S COLUMN
June looks to be a busy month, with graduations, weddings, and don’t forget Father’s Day! I hope you all have a good month with safe travels. Also in June, we will be seating our new Board of Directors (BOD) for the next year. As of the date of this writing, we do not know who will be elected or re-elect-ed to serve. However, since this Newsletter should be in your hands days prior to the election, I would like to ask every one of you to please get out and vote for your next KCCA Board of Directors.
MONTHLY MUSICAL: Beaverton Community BandSubmitted by Shirley Frank
It’s time once again to celebrate with
The Beaverton Community Band, a
favorite with our King City residents.
This Monthly Musical presentation will
be on Sunday, June 12th, at 2:00pm
in the King City Clubhouse. This band
was formally organized in 1978, but has a
history that goes back much further than
that. They are an all volunteer group of
60-75 adult musicians who love concert
band music and have a willingness to share their
talents with the public.
This year, the band will be performing under the
direction of Martin Sobelman, who was new to the
group last year. They will be sharing a wide variety of
music, including marches, symphonic transcriptions,
easy listening pops, swing, and patriotic. During the
Summer, you’ll often find the band at community
events such as the Beaverton Farmer’s Market, the
City’s Picnics in the Park, and concerts on the lawn
of the Beaverton City Library. This past year, the
KCCA BOD ELECTION DAY — MAY 31
For those of you who missed the May BOD meet-ing, your Board voted to interpret the rules govern-ing Absentee Ballots to allow Absentee Ballots to be picked up prior to the day of the election and returned any time up to and including the day of the election. For those of you who will not be available to come to the Clubhouse to vote in person on Tuesday, May 31, please stop by the offi ce with your resident ID and pick
up an Absentee Ballot up until the day before the elec-
tion. (Contact the offi ce if you work during the day and need to pick up your ballot outside regular offi ce hours.)
THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR SUPPORT THIS PAST
YEAR AND FOR VOTING FOR YOUR NEXT YEAR’S
HARD-WORKING KCCA BOARD OF DIRECTORS!
Beaverton Community Band
Band has done concerts benefiting the
Oregon Food Bank, Christmas Concerts
in Beaverton, and concerts at several
assisted living facilities.
We will also be honoring June birth-
days and anniversaries. The usual raffle
drawings will be held, and as we have
done for many years, a free-will offer-
ing will be taken for the Band after this
performance.
A big thank you goes to Diana Gaydon of Summer
Creek Realty, who will be responsible for providing
refreshments following the concert. Thanks also
to our sponsors, Columbia State Bank and KCCA,
who make it possible for us to provide these monthly

Last month we hoped for warmer, fairer weather so we could enjoy time on the Clubhouse patio for our May BYOBev-erage HAPPY HOUR.
Well, the power of positive thinking works!! Our May BYOBeverage night was a huge and festive success with over 75 residents enjoying the twinkling lights, lovely guitar music, and great Mexican style food as the sun set over our lovely golf course. Of course, the lively group gathering in and outside of the Lounge area made for much of the festive atmosphere. The 50/50 added a new member to its growing list of win-ners, with Jack Croll taking home $58 in prize money. Then, how about the great decorations? Wendy Marchant, our Committee’s “Creative Director,” led a group in producing the colorful, adorable piñatas. What a lot of fun that was! Don’t you wish you could have been a fly on the wall listening to a group of ladies as they wrapped fringed crepe paper around a cardboard shaped donkey? Yup, there were choice comments in abundance. What really needs to be said here is that the HELLO NEIGHBORS SOCIAL COMMITTEE is a hard work-ing group coming up with fresh ideas to add vitality to the social life of our community. Over the past few years, we have evolved from a small committee primarily meeting the needs of our new residents to the growing one of today focusing on ALL of our residents. With today’s changing and diverse community, we are looking to offer inclusive and enjoyable events.Just recently, we have added new members Carol Schultz and Peg Beckwith to our committee, who have added some great ideas for future events. Anyone may come to our meetings to see what we are all about, to share their ideas, or just to observe how the thoughts and ideas spill from the nooks and crannies of our minds and become the fun events you all are enjoying. Don’t miss this month’s BYOBeverage on June 9th, when we’ll celebrate Summer. Our pool will have just opened and the warm weather will really have settled in. There won’t be a swimsuit contest…PROMISE! But there will be a good time.

Southwest Corridor Republican ClubSubmitted by Billie Reynolds
Some negative concepts just
won’t go away peacefully, such
as the continual pressure to build
more light rail, a concept of the 1890’s which has
outgrown its usefulness in this modern time. In No-
vember, the City of Tigard will vote on whether they
want the plans for more light rail after all the other var-
ied plans have been unable to pass muster with the
people. There will not be the proposed tunnel under
OHSU, costing $8.5 billion; there will not be the tunnel
to the Portland State Campus; but they are still hoping
for some light rail to come to Bridgeport. “They” in
this case are Tri-Met and Metro and some who stand
to make money from such a project.
Come on Wednesday, June 8th, and get your update
on the proposed plans, and ideas to find genuine
solutions to the traffic problems of our area—that
are cost effective as well. Steve Schopp, Tim Esau,
and several others with knowledge and expertise will
be discussing light rail and its developmental and
operational costs. Oregon does not have the money
for such projects, and the Federal DOT does not.
That leaves you and me to pay for a non-solution to
our traffic problems.
The Southwest Corridor Republican Club will
meet and greet at 6:30, and the meeting will begin
at 7:00. The King City Clubhouse is located at 15452
SW 116th Avenue.
King City Civic Association does not endorse any political party, nor candidates for election to offi ce, whether partisan or nonparti-
san. The views expressed in these articles are those of the clubs and do not necessarily refl ect the views of the Board of Directors
or staff of KCCA. We provide meeting space and newsletter space for these clubs as a service to our residents.
East Washington County Democratic Caucus (EWCDC)Submitted by Diane Tyhurst
The May 2016 program was
canceled due to a double booking
by the speaker.
In June, the East Washington County Democrats
will welcome a panel of speakers to discuss the ex-
pansion and development of land in the southwest
Portland area. On the panel will be Metro Council Dis-
trict 3’s Craig Dirksen, who serves on Metro’s trans-
portation advisory committee. Dirksen is an advocate
for a complete transportation system with the proper
balance of streets, highways, transit, and active trans-
portation facilities to support economic development
and people’s quality of life. Also on the panel will be
local mayors and council members from surrounding
municipalities such as King City, Tigard, and Tualatin.
The panel will talk about land development around the
new Beaverton High School on Scholls Ferry Road
and how this large development will affect the tax
structure, road systems, and boundaries in southwest
Portland.
The East Washington County Democrats meet on
the fi rst Thursday of each month at 7:00pm in the King
City Clubhouse. There will be no meetings in July and
August due to the vast number of political activities
going on this Summer with picnics and conventions
based around the November presidential election.
Please everyone, exercise your right to vote.

King City Artists’
GuildSubmitted by
Lynn Wolfe
The painting theme for May was “Door-ways & Arches,” which proved to be a challenge for us.
But we were eventually able to produce some delightful results. We are about to enter our “relax & renew” summer season when we do not have business meetings or news articles, and painting weekly is for those of us who are still in town. We do have a theme for summer: “Creatures of the Garden,” which includes fairies, gnomes, bugs, animals, etc. During the month of June this year, we will exhibit a sampling of our artwork in the food court of the Tualatin New Seasons store. Customers had the entire month to enjoy our paintings as they had their coffee and bakery snacks. Prolific artist Laurie Svec had paintings in two recent shows: the annual Tigard Art Walk and the Village Gallery of Arts’ Art Adoption, who held exhib-its in which she participated. She has the talent and energy to do these even while painting for the viewing pleasure of King City residents in our gallery.

It will be a one-day event so mark your calendars for the 22nd of October. We’d hate to have you miss it. 10 KCCA Newsletter — JUNE 2016
Tech News Our big-screen TVs are great with the
exception of the sound. Most fl at screen televisions
have very small speakers and some are positioned on
the back of the set. The solution is to get a soundbar
or remote speakers or a wireless headset. Any of these
devices will dramatically improve the sound quality of
your TV. Stop by on June 4th to see which is best for
you.
Wondering what type of computer to buy for your
grandchild? Come to the Computer Club on June 25th
to fi nd out. We will discuss the different types of com-
puters and tablets suitable for kids.
Tech Tip The bad guys are always trying to fool us. Don’t fall
for the phone scams that pretend to be from Microsoft
saying that something is wrong with your computer.
Microsoft will never call you. Also, hang up on the call
pretending to be from the IRS—they will never call you.
When using your computer, don’t click on any of the
ads that say they will fi x or speed up your computer.
And never call any of the phone numbers that show up
in pop-up ads. They are all scams.
Computer Class Topics (Classes are at 10:00am on Satur-
days in the Arts & Crafts Building.)

Imagination and CollageSubmitted by Sharon Loaiza
In using this collage process, everyone becomes an instant artist. Gather together your intuition and imagination, cut out some images, and presto, you create your first collage card. Eventually, you will have your own deck of collage cards that fit together in a meaningful way. Together we discover these images act as symbols and speak to the
essence of who and what we are. We will experience how consciousness can be transformed, resulting in increased understanding that gives meaningful shape to our life. We create 5” x 8” cards with images cut from magazines and books, and all your materials are furnished. Examples of our cards are on display in the Multi-
Purpose Room. If you want further information, go to www.soulcollage.com. There you will find videos, and people sharing their experiences from all over the world. New people are always welcome. Sharon has done graduate work in Art Therapy and is a Spiritual Director and past member of WSO (Wa-tercolor Society of Oregon). Please call Sharon if you have any questions or would like to attend the class: 503-758-6904.
Where: Multi-Purpose Room in KCCA Clubhouse
When: 12:30-3:00pm, fi rst and third Friday of the month. June 3 and 17.
Costs: $10.00 per class (this is a $25 value)

“Leave the Details to Me”
WHAT?!? A group of senior citizens were sitting around talking about their ailments: “My arms are so weak I can hardly hold this cup of co ee,” said one. “Yes, I know. My cataracts are so bad, I can’t even see my co ee,” replied another. “I can’t turn my head because of the arthritis in my neck,” said a third, to which several nodded weakly in agreement. “My blood pressure pills make me dizzy,” claimed
another. “I guess that’s the price we pay for getting old,” winced an old man as he shook his head. en there was a short moment of silence. “Well, it’s not that bad,” said one woman cheerfully. “ ank God we can all still drive.”

King City Music Club
Submitted by
Liz Schenk
On May 2, the King City Music Club once again presented a show for the community, in the clubhouse. This talented group began the show with a couple of sprightly oldies, “Nice & Easy” and “Don’t Get around Much Anymore.” Joyce Strassberg began the solos with “What a Wonderful World,” and who can hear that beautiful melody without thinking of dear Louie Armstrong? Barbara Parks and Fran Walston joined forces in a duet, with “Are You Lonesome Tonight?”. Fran then sang “East of the Sun,” dazzling one and all once again. “Hello, Young Lovers,” beauti-fully done by Vernon Coates, was followed by Elsa Malcom with “All I do is Dream of You.” “They Say That Falling in Love Is Wonderful,” sung next by Rich Haller, was wonderful. Our sunny days and warm weather seem to be bringing out the very best of talent in this group. Sharon Baker entertained next with “Hello Again,” and Jo Ann Brinkman laid down her baton long enough to offer “They Can’t Take That Away From Me,” followed by Bill Lowe with “Young At Heart.” Liz Schenk sang next, offering one of the songs everyone will remember from Tony Bennett and Sinatra days, “The Way You Look Tonight.” Barbara Parks returned and gave a great ren-dition of “Misty,” and the solos came to an end with Muriel Dresser singing “Teach Me Tonight.” The program ended with two other well remem-bered songs. This musical club does such posi-tive things for the members, socially and emotionally, and the members invite one and all to come enjoy the monthly shows on the fi rst Monday of each month. Everyone is invited to come listen or to join the group. It’s a great way to add fun and humor to your lives. The next show will be on June 6 at 2:00, in the clubhouse. Please come join, or just enjoy!

IT’S PARADE TIME AGAIN!
Bows, bells, balls, and balloons will adorn
the many golf carts expected to compete in
the Firecracker Golf Cart Parade July 3rd
at 4:00pm.
Sponsored in part by McCann’s, the carts
will assemble in the Clubhouse parking lot
in plenty of time to make their way to Pacific
Pointe Retirement Inn, where residents there will judge the winners.
Sign-up sheets are posted in the Pro Shop, the Clubhouse, and the Crown Center
for those interested in competing in this event. “If you have a golf cart, decorate it
and join the fun,” said Dianne Wilson, the parade chairperson.
The parade starts and ends at the KCCA Clubhouse on 116th. The route, which
forms a large oval, is down Royalty Parkway, on Queen Elizabeth to and from Pacific Pointe, down Royalty
Parkway to King Charles, up King Charles, and then along King George to 116th and the Clubhouse.
Although this is a fun and festive event, it also serves as a sobering reminder of the sacrifice by so many
who have secured our independence so we can celebrate it.
For additional information, contact Dianne Wilson (503-639-7476; [email protected]), or Roy Armour
(503-330-6594; [email protected]).
