After a few days of hospitalization and close monitoring for internal bleeding, Charli was cleared to be released! Charli then saw an orthopedic specialist to ensure her pelvis would heal properly, and with his 'ok' she was put on 6 weeks crate rest. Charli seemingly had a rough life before she came to KCHF, because she would duck when a hand got close to pet her and shook around anyone new. However, with a lot of love and care, she’s become very trusting and is a super sweet young lady!

Fall 2018 KCHF LENDING A HELPING PAW!

We were contacted by a good samaritain to try and help Brax, an 11-month old German Shepherd, after he was hit by a car. An x-ray revealed that Brax's hip was so out of socket, that he would need a Femoral Head Ostectomy. This is where doctors remove the 'ball' part of the ball-and-socket joint. Poor Albert was not only hit by a car, but got stuck underneath it and was then drug! He ended up with a broken front paw and a severe case of road rash. On top of these obvious injuries, he had another pretty severe condition hiding within him, heartworms! If you’ve taken a yoga class before, chances are that you’ve done the downward dog pose. But how about doing downward dog with actual dogs? It’s called puppy yoga and it’s the newest, cutest exercise class you’ll want to try. Although the idea of getting your stretch on while puppies romp around may seem distracting, it’s a totally unique way to brighten your day and change up your exercise regimen. KCHF’s first ever puppy yoga class was held at Barefoot Yoga Loft and Pink Moon Yoga Studio. Our director heard about a thing called “goat yoga” and thought, 'what the heck, if that's a thing, we have puppies, why not put some puppies in a room and give it a whirl?!' So, we found some people who wanted to see what it was like to do their Yoga workout with puppies. Our puppies didn't fail to bring the cuteness and the fun, and our new friends who attended had a great time! It was $30 to reserve a spot in the class, and thanks to those who attended we raised about $1,600 to help care for our friends at KCHF! Are you a little disappointed you missed it?! No worries, the next puppy yoga class will be held on September 9th at 6 p.m. at Barefoot Yoga Loft in Bourbonnais. If the yoga itself doesn’t get you into a Zen state of mind, cuddling with a furry puppy is sure to do the trick!

From the Director's Desk - Pittie Party We hear about breed stereotyping all the time, Rottweilers, German Shepherds, Dobermans, and lately, Pitbulls. They're vicious beasts that attack anyone and anything that comes near them, right? L.O.L. Personally I have 2 Pitbull mixes and I find it safe to say that they'd lick someone to death before they ate an arm or leg off of someone. Anyway, one of our shelter Pitties had a pretty rough experience a few weeks ago at the vet and he wanted to share his story, so I'm handing my laptop over to Duke. . .

okay buddy, you're being such a good boy.” That's when it hit me, that woman was talking about me! I couldn't believe it! I may not be the biggest fan of other animals, but I LOVE people more than anything! The vet techs that do my therapy always tell me what a good boy I am and they give me lots of treats while they rub my belly. I love car rides too, so I ride great in the car to go to therapy and everyone compliments me on how sweet I am! But, this woman made me feel like a really bad boy, and I didn't even do anything to her. Sometimes, some dogs may not be the nicest, but that doesn't mean that all of us are bad! Just because I'm a Pitbull mix, doesn't make me any more mean than a Chihuahua. I hear they're actually worse than what people say about me. Take it from the dog who gets talked about right in front of him, there's nothing wrong with us! If we're brought up with love, we give what we get. Everyone gets put in a position to have to defend themselves, but as a dog we can't really do that, so thankfully we have humans that do it for us. The moral of my story is that when you see a Pittie, say hello! When you see a Pittie, look beyond the stereotype that some folks have given us. When you hear someone saying something negative about Pitties, let them know that not all of us have been brought up to fight, not all of us have bitten someone, not all of us are aggressive, and not all of us are mean. Most importantly, when you're walking through a shelter, whether it's mine or somewhere else, don't keep walking past our kennels because we are Pitties. We have more love to give than most other dogs. Most of us would die for our families, once we were adopted. Most of us are the sweetest pooches you'll ever meet. Most of us have had it rough, and most of us have been walked away from because of our breed. 'Pitbull' is just a word. Don't walk away from us because more often than not we will love you better than the “fluff ball” dog next to us!

Hey everyone! I'm Duke, a white Pittie that currently resides at KCHF. I'm also the longest resident, at 1.5 years, so if you have a home and need a super sweet gentleman, I'm your man! Jordan and I were at South Creek Animal Hospital for my laser therapy session on my hips. I'm a well-behaved guy at the vet, so I walked right next to Jordan out of the exam room and we approached the counter to check out. A woman in the waiting room, who was completely on the opposite side of the room, made a bit of a production. She stood up and shouted, “Oh! He's a Pitbull! They are so aggressive! Keep him away from me!” I looked around for an aggressive dog because to be honest, I was scared this dog was going to come after me! But, I couldn't find another dog around me. Then Jordan started petting me and said, “It's

may be 'too much work,' but we really do start getting doggie depressed, as living in the shelter is very hard on us.

• When our staff opens the door and we all start barking at once, we are all trying to say 'hello!' and we want you to pick us!

I hope I’ve cleared up any misunderstandings and hope that when you come to look for a new four- legged friend, you will know that we’re just excited and want to go home with you! COME ROCK OUT FOR OUR ANIMALS PUNKS FOR PAWS At FEED, 259 S. Schuyler in Kankakee October 5th and 6th All proceeds from this 2-day music fest will be donated to KCHF Shelter!

Thoughts from a Shelter Dog Hello everyone! My name is Charlie and there’s a few things you should know about those of us that are waiting in shelters for our forever homes. We all try really hard to get your attention, but as you know we don’t speak English. This makes it a little hard to communicate, so you see and hear things a little differently than what we actually mean. I’m here to try and help translate for you a bit. • When we jump up on our kennel doors, you might

think we have no manners, but really we're just so excited that you might want to take us outside to meet us, or maybe even take us home!

• When you hear us bark, extra loud, you might think we're mean or all we do is bark, but really we just don't know how to use our inside voices!

• Sometimes, we hide in the back of our kennels or cower down. You might think we were abused and
