In addition to the school curriculum we also run a wide range of clubs that most children attend. The school has a strong reputation for the creative arts and inter school sports.

The school is known for ambitious and original dance and musical productions staged in partnership with professional dancers, artists, actors, musicians and partner schools. Many pupils take part in the Cornwall Music Festival. Clubs for drama, music and dance are run in the school.

Other clubs running at the school include French, Spanish, art, IT, cricket, football, tag-rugby and netball.

Kea’s school teams compete well in in a broad range of local and regional sports tournaments. Many children take part in clubs and house and inter-schools competitions for swimming, cross country, netball, tag rugby and athletics.

Our Year 4s, 5s and 6s take part in educational camps at Bishops’ Forum, Penryn, the Porthpean Outdoor Centre and the Isles of Scilly. Activities include sailing, kayaking, climbing, wind-surfing, cycling and coasteering.

‘I have really enjoyed my time at Kea. It has been a wonderful experience that I will never forget’ Year 6 leaver

Kea Community Primary School

At Kea we pride ourselves on the quality of relationships between everyone in the school community. We are a welcoming school and children and parents make long-lasting friendships.

Kea School Friends organises regular, enjoyable events for all the family.

Children learn and are expected to behave in a responsible manner, allowing others to work and play without interference. They are expected to show politeness, consideration, courtesy and respect for others.

Pupils are taught about respect for diversity in local, national and global communities. They are given opportunities to learn about taking roles of responsibility including school councillors, playground buddies, first aiders and road safety officers.

Each child is a member of one of our Houses (named after Cornish Castles): Restormel, Tintagel, Pendennis or St Mawes. Children can earn House points for effort and achievement and a cup is awarded each half-term to the House awarded the most points. Certificates, medals and badges are given to individuals for earning house points.

‘Kea stands out for me as a school that is also good at the things which are harder to measure...it is a wonderful community where people care what happens and there is a great deal of teamwork, respect and creativity.’Parent comment to a school inspector

Children start school in the year that they turn five and join the Foundation Class. When a child is due to start school for the first time, an application needs to be made to Cornwall Council in the year prior to starting. A form needs to be completed which is contained in a booklet which will be available from any pre -school, school or Cornwall Council.

Telephone: 0300 1234 101

Parents are usually notified if their child has been allocated a place in the Spring term.

All pupils are able to start school full time in September. Transition sessions called ‘Learning Together’ are arranged for children and parents in the Summer Term before the children start school.

Foundation Class children have a special curriculum called the Early Years Foundation Stage. The children continue to learn mainly through structured indoor and outdoor play. The class are taught by a teacher with the help of at least one assistant.

Some children experience difficulties in learning and need extra help to help them to make progress. We have trained support staff working in each class to enable us to give extra assistance to these children. The school will normally identify any problems but please let us know if you have concerns about your child’s progress. If your child needs any additional help you will always be consulted before any arrangements are made. The school can draw on a range of expertise from the Local Authority to advise on how to support children with special needs. A copy of our policy is available on the website. If you wish to discuss your child’s special educational need, the school’s Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCo) will be happy to arrange a meeting with you. The site and buildings are accessible to physically disabled pupils and adults. We are committed to Equal Opportunities.

Our Policy is available on the website.

‘The inclusive care given to pupils with very complex needs is exemplary.’
