I guess I should tell you, Patty is my cousin: Her name is Patty Whack the Third. We haven’t seen each other in years. I’m an only child so Patty is really more like my sister. We hung out every summer when we were young adventurers.

I remember one family vacation to the Brass-Horn Forest. Patty helped me finish my summer school critter project. I only

needed one more specimen, the rare ginger-snapping beetle. These little guys have giant nose claws and smell like gingersnap cookies. And if you scare them, they make a loud SNAP! with their claws to scare you away.

We were about to capture one when out of nowhere loud trumpets blasted—Blaart! Patty and I screamed; the beetle ran away.

– So Much Drama– Strike-A-Pose

In his very nature he was God. Jesus was equal with God. But

Jesus didn’t take advantage of that fact. Instead, he made himself

nothing. He did this by taking on the nature of a servant. He was made just like human beings.

Philippians 2:6-7 (NIrV)

For the LORD is the great God, the great King above all gods.

In his hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands

formed the dry land.

Psalm 95:3-5 (NIV)

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that

whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save

the world through him.

John 3:16-17 (NIV)

I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust

in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the

power of the Holy Spirit.

A. Don’t do good things just so others will see you. God won’t reward you if you do.

B. When you give, don’t declare it with loud trumpets. When you pray, don’t do it to be seen and praised by others. When you fast, don’t go around looking sad and miserable. The hypocrites do that. Don’t be like them. They want praise from others, but the truth is, they’ve gotten all the reward they’re going to get.

C. Instead when you give, keep it a secret. Don’t let anyone know but your Father.

When you pray, go into your room, close the door, and pray to your Father. No one will hear you but Him.

When you fast, wash your face and put oil on your head. Only your Father will know that you’re

fasting. He sees what no one else sees, and He will reward you.

D. You don’t have to use lots of words when you pray. Even before you ask, your Father knows your needs.

E. Pray like this:

“Father in heaven, praise your name! Send your kingdom here.

Let things happen the way you want them to on earth like they do in heaven.

Give us the bread we need today.

Forgive us the same way we forgive others. Protect us from temptation. Free us from the evil one.”

F. Forgive others when they do wrong to you. If you do, your Father will forgive you. If you don’t, your Father will not forgive you.

Was that a trumpet sound? Where did that come from? Patty and I stared at each other.

Spooked, we decided to head back. But the trumpets kept getting louder and louder. Blaart! Blaart! We ducked behind a fallen tree to catch our breath. We looked over a branch to see if anything was following us.

Then Patty screamed, “Niki! Don’t move!”I froze in place and Patty reached for my

head. She squealed a little as she grabbed something from my hair.

“What’s the matter? What is it?” I asked.“You’ve got a little friend,” Patty said. She

opened her hand to reveal a trumpeting turbo snail. It stretched its coned nose toward the sky and blasted, “Bla-Blaart!”

I guess we found the source of the trumpets! “Boy, for little guys they sure are loud!” Patty said. “And we found the last critter for your school project!” That’s what best friends are for. They help you finish your homework. And help you get snails out of your hair!
