Understanding the Bed BugWhy is it that this small bug has become such a pest?

The nocturnal bed bug feeds on human blood. That is why the perfect area for them to hide is typically in sleeping quarters; in mattresses, box springs, bed frames, headboards, cracks, crevices and night stands or dressers near beds. This keeps them close to their human food source.

From the bedroom they have begun traveling through clothing, suitcases and brief cases to other areas where we spend our time and are then easily transplanted into those areas be it an office, a store, warehouse or manufacturing facility where they will seek out new food sources and a new place to call their home.

The Lifecycle of the Bed BugAn adult female bed bug can lay 5 to 12 eggs, per day. The eggs will usually hatch 6 to 17 days later – 11 days on average. Once they hatch, the new nymphs will start on a 5-stage feeding and molting progression toward adulthood. This progression can take between 32 to 48 days as they typically feed once every 5 to 10 days.

When food supplies are readily available for a bed bug they will typically live 10 months. However, without adequate blood supplies they can live even longer. They have been found to live in empty buildings for over one year.

Identifying a Bed Bug ProblemThe first sign that a problem with bed bugs exists is usually the red itchy bites experienced by the people in the surroundings.

When bites are noticed, it is time to start looking for the source. Typically found in bedding, upholstery, carpeting and nearby cracks and crevices there are signs to look for:

• The bed bugs themselves in various stages from egg to adult.

• Their exoskeletons which are shed and left behind as they move through each stage of growth.

• The dark spotting of bed bug feces.

Controlling Bed BugsControlling bed bugs can be difficult, particularly if you are looking for a solution that is safe for the residents, guests or employees of your facilities. Even the use of traditional, less safe pesticides is now an issue.

An article in the Wall Street Journal (Rapidly Evolving Bed Bugs Won’t Die by Robert Lee Hotz, January 26, 2011) indicates that use of many traditional pesticides is becoming less effective because the bed bugs are evolving their own biochemical defenses against those pesticides and becoming more resistant. It states that laboratory testing has shown that bed bugs can now survive doses that are a thousand times greater than the lethal dose from a decade ago.

United proposes a solution for both of these issues with safer, bio-based alternatives for which the bed bugs have not developed a resistance.

United’s Bed Bug Mitigation Program1. Do a thorough cleaning of the affected area before treating:

• Vacuum entire area.

• Wash all bedding and clothing in hot water and dry with high heat.

• Continue with diligent cleaning until problem is eliminated. Be sure to wash bedding weekly.

2. Treat Mattresses and Upholstered Areas with United 239 SLEEP TIGHT Bed Bug Spray.SLEEP TIGHT is bio-based and Earth Smart® certified meaning it is safer in use and for the environment. The natural botanicals in SLEEP TIGHT will kill bed bug larvae, nymphs and adults on contact. It is water-based and will not stain most fabrics. Spray mattresses weekly when changing bed linens and spray carpeting and other upholstered surfaces every 2 weeks. This botanical formulation is exempt from EPA registrations.

3. Treat bed frames, box springs, cracks and crevices with United 236 DUSTED Powdered Insecticide.DUSTED is a botanical based product that is EPA registered with applications for bed bugs. This powdered formula remains safer to use in areas where contact with people or animals is a concern. It is perfect for applying into cracks and crevices, inside the bottom of the box springs, around floor boards and in dressers and nightstands behind and under the drawers – all those areas where the bugs like to hide. The powdered formula adheres to the bed bugs as they crawl through it and then is tracked back to the nest, helping to spread the product where it is needed. DUSTED provides residual protection for up to six months, but must be reapplied if product is removed or vacuumed up during regular cleaning.

4. For larger infestations, add stronger barrier protection in areas where personal contact is not an issue. In instances where personal or animal contact is not an issue, you may want to use another insecticide solution to put down a barrier of protection. United 446 X-PIRE Insect Spray can be used indoors and out to control bed bugs and much more. When getting control of bed bugs is difficult, it may be recommended to alternate between the types of insecticides being used. Adding X-PIRE to your mitigation program provides that capability and will help to prevent the bed bugs from becoming resistant to one type of treatment.
