When it’s not too hot out, many of us are spending more time outdoors. While we may not be seeing our extended family and friends quite as much, perhaps you are lucky enough to run into more wildlife. During the spring and summer months it can be very common to see both common Snapping Turtles and Painted Turtles on the road, either crossing to lay eggs or just basking. Anton Eppert, age 10, and Heidi Hartman, age 3, were out for an evening walk on the C Line and when they came home they discovered a snapping turtle laying eggs! This is right on the shoulder of the road, not a place many would expect to find a nest. The kids decid- ed they needed to let people know not to drive on or park on the shoulder of the road to protect the eggs. We actually recently did notice the sign on the side of the road and checked it out ourselves, and snapped a quick photo, but fortunately Jessie Brown sent us these pictures and told us the story. She tells us many have stopped to check out the nest and sign. In addition to keeping this mama turtle and her babies safe, they are also raising awareness of the fact many turtles get hit by cars both here and basi- cally everywhere turtles are found. North- ern populations can take up to 15-20 years to reach sexual maturity and while lifespan is hard to measure in the wild, it’s been suggested they can reach 100 years of age! Creature Feature It’s been a while since we’ve seen a new animal so we’ve gone back through our records to find a bird we have not seen here in many years. That being said, if you were to see one, now is the time.

Scarlet Tanager

We saw this stunning bird a few summers ago by Beech Beach. It wasn’t hard to spot, its vibrant red feathers stuck out amidst the green foliage (obviously black and white print does not do this bird justice). These birds almost look like they should belong in the tropical rainforest, not northern Ontario.

The females’ colour patterns are golden green and al-most resemble that of a goldfinch. In the fall, males strip their bright red feathers for golden bodies as well, with green-black wings.Scarlet tanagers spend their summers across eastern North America and their winters in South America.

They are often victims of brood parasites, such as female brown-headed cowbirds, who will swoop in when the scarlet tanager pair isn’t looking and will replace one of the tanager eggs with one of her own. Tanagers ear insects and berries, and any fruits such as oranges that humans put out for them.

Recipe Corner

WHITEWATER VEGGIE BURGER

These Veggie Burgers are delicious and substan-tial – they don’t try to imitate meat which many try to do … and fail miserably ….. These are from the WhiteWater Cookbook. (Don’t be intimidated by the ingredients)

INGREDIENTS:

1 tbsp vegetable oil1 onion diced1 clove garlic minced1 tbsp cumin1 ½ tbsp chili powder1 - 19 oz can black beans – drained, rinsed and roughly pureed1 tsp oregano¼ cup parsley or cilantro, chopped2 tbsp sesame oil½ cup almonds, (roasted) – and chopped (some-times I just use ground almonds from my baking pantry)3 cups fine bread crumbs½ cup soy sauce5 eggs2 cups carrots, grated2 cups oatsFlour for dredging 2 tbsp vegetable oil

METHOD:

In a large skillet, sauté onions and garlic in oil. Place in large mixing bowl and let it cool a little. Add remaining ingredients (you get to use your hands here). Mix well and shape into patties. Dredge lightly in flour. Heat vegetable oil in a large pan to brown the burgers on both sides. Remember that there are raw eggs in here so make sure to heat them through very well.

Serve these on the best whole wheat buns you can find and the usual burger toppings that you love …. Great with Tzatziki …. ENJOY!

Due to the restrictions placed on community activities across Canada and around the world, the NSHN Auxiliary Matthews Site has decided that this year’s Community Night must be cancelled. We realize that this is an event that many of the residents of St. Joseph Island and the North Shore look forward to each summer but we feel that the safety of those communities is of utmost importance. We look forward to seeing everyone again next year.
