Forma?ve  Assessment  Process

•  A  forma?ve  assessment  is  assessment  for  learning  while  a  summa?ve  assessment  is  an  assessment  of  learning.

•  Forma?ve  assessment  is  to  summa?ve  assessment  what  a  physical  examina?on  is  to  an  autopsy.

•  Summa?ve  gives  the  student  a  chance  to  prove  mastery;  forma?ve  gives  students  chances  to  improve  on  learning

*Robert  Eaker,  Dufour  PLC  Conference

Keys  to  a  Common  Forma?ve  Assessment  Process

•  To  determine  if  an  assessment  is  forma?ve:  •  Is  it  used  to  iden?fy  students  with  difficul?es?  •  Do  students  receive  addi?onal  ?me  for  learning  when  they  have  difficulty?

•  Do  students  get  addi?onal  opportuni?es  to  demonstrate  learning?

•  Do  teachers  use  the  results  to  inform  and  improve  their  individual  and  collec?ve  prac?ce?

Some  prac?ces  that  hinder  effec?ve  learning…

•  Averaging  grades  •  Thoughtless  use  of  zeros  •  How  we  oZen  grade  students’  first  a'empts  •  Not  allowing  students  to  do  make-‐up  work  •  Giving  too  much  weight  to  assignments  that  involve  parent  par?cipa?on

•  Out  of  school  suspensions  for  truancy

Is  It  Good  Enough  For  Tucker??

•  The  standard  for  “If  we  really  mean  it”  should  be  this:  “Is  it  good  enough  for  my  own  child?”

•  Where  should  this  occur??  •  Any  school  •  Any  classroom  •  Any  teacher    •  Any  lesson

Parents  send  their  best-‐  they  don’t  keep  home  the  best  and  send  the  rest.

Go  watch  a  middle  or  high  school  football  prac?ce  if  you  want  a  snapshot  of  forma?ve  assessment  •  High  school  teams  have  ten  summa?ve  assessments,  and  the  head  coach  is  evaluated  on  the  basis  of  those  ten  assessments

•  The  coach  prac?ces  the  skills  needed  for  that  week’s  assessment  using  a  “whistle”

Goodnight Ipad

•  To be an effective tech leader, you have to be flexible

•  There has to be a fine balance between tech and traditional lessons- you cannot expect to do tech lessons every day
