New Funding Opportunities
£27.3 Million Grant Fund to Help Low Income Families with
Disabled or Seriously Ill Children (UK)
Parents of children and young adults who are disabled or seriously ill will be able to apply for a share
of the £27.3 million Family Fund, the Government announced today as it continues its commitment for
two years. Family Fund, the UK’s largest grant giving charity, is designed to make life easier for low-
income families with disabled and seriously ill children and young people. The money can be used for
days out, garden play equipment, computers, toys and kitchen appliances like dishwashers and
washing machines. The fund helped more than 50,000 families in England last year, from a total of
£27 million. The fund is now in its 40th year.

Prince's Countryside Fund Re-Opens for Applications (UK)
The Prince's Countryside Fund has re-opened for applications.
The aim of the fund is to help improve the long-term sustainability of the British countryside. In this
funding round up to £500,000 is available to support projects that improve service provision in rural
areas; support rural enterprise; support farming businesses; and provide training opportunities for
young people. Funding is available for both capital and revenue costs. Applicants can be, but do not
need to be, charities. All applicants must however be able to clearly demonstrate a significant level of
public benefit arising from their activities (which fulfill the Fund’s charitable objects).
Previous projects supported include:
Women in Rural Enterprise, a national organisation supporting rural women who own or want to start
a business and provides business support and Hampshire Fare, which is a county food group
established to promote the benefits of buying local produce.

People's Postcode Trust Small Grants Programme (England,
Scotland & Wales [excl. Greater London])
The People's Postcode Trust has announced that its small grants programme has re-opend for
applications. Through its small grants programme, the People's Postcode Trust offers grants of
between £500 and £10,000 to small organisations and community groups for projects lasting up to 6
months in the areas of:
Poverty Prevention
Advancement of Health
Community Development
Public Sports
Human Rights
Environmental Protection.
Previous projects supported include:
The Greater Manchester Youth Network which received a grant of £1,862 to run their Young
Community Entrepreneurs Programme for disabled people.
The Moray Art Centre which received a grant of £2,000 to run a play therapy group for children with
autism.

Community Radio Fund (UK)
Telecom’s Regulator Ofcom, has announced that the Community Radio Fund is now open for
applications. Through the fund, Community Radio Stations can apply for funding to support their core
running costs. These can include:
Management costs
Administration costs
Fundraising to support the station
Community outreach work
The costs involved in using volunteers.
There is no upper limit of grant that can be applied for, however applicants are asked to take note of
previous grants awarded for an indication of realistic award figures. Grants can only be made to
community radio licensees which are broadcasting under a community radio licence (and not an RSL,
for example). The average grant awarded over the last few years has been in the region if £15,000.

Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation Grants Programme (UK)
Organisations and schools in the UK that wish to develop links with Japan and Japanese schools are
able to apply for funding through the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation. The Foundation makes
small grants to support activities that support the study of the Japanese language and culture, School,
Education and Youth exchanges. In the past the Foundation has made grants towards visits the
between the UK and Japan between by teachers and young people and the teaching and
development of Japanese language and cultural studies in schools. Organisations that have
successfully applied to the Foundation include Ashlyns School, Berkhamsted which received a grant
of £1,500 to run courses in Japanese language and culture for sixth form students and County Upper
School, Bury St Edmunds, which received a grant of £5,000 to help fund a study tour to Japan by
eight Year 11 students and two teachers.
The next closing date for applications is the 31st August 2013.

European Integration Fund (UK)
The UK Border Agency has announced that it is now accepting applications for funding under the
European Integration Fund (EIF).
A total of £31 million is available to support innovative projects that support the integration of third-
country nationals of different social, cultural, religious, linguistic and ethnic backgrounds within the
UK. The EIF is aimed at projects assisting third-country nationals who have a potential route to legal
settlement in the UK, to fulfill conditions of residence and integrate into British society. Applications
will be accepted from NGOs, charities, academic institutions, central and local government,
intergovernmental organisations, limited companies and any partnership made up of these
organisations. The minimum EIF grant that can be applied for is £200,000 per project; there is no
maximum amount that must be applied for. Projects can last a maximum of twenty-four months
depending on the start date.
The fund will run until February 2014 and the next losing date for applications is the 10th June 2013.

Clore Social Leadership Programme (UK)
The Clore Duffield Foundation has announced that its 2014 Social Leadership Programme will open
for applications on the 29th April 2013.
During 2014, the Foundation will be offering 20 Fellowships to exceptional individuals who have the
potential to take on a significant leadership role in the wider social sector. A number of these will be
Specialist Fellowships, which are funded by particular organisations to target specific groups or
address particular needs. In the past, bursaries of up to £20,000 have been available to help train and
develop a new generation of leaders for the third sector in the UK. The Fellowship can be undertaken
intensively over 12 months (the full-time option), or part-time, over a period of up to 24 months.

Applications Go Live for 24+ Advanced Learning Loans (England)
The Skills Funding Agency has announced that Colleges and Training Organisations have begun to
accept applications for the new 24+ Advanced Learning Loans. These loans will help learners aged
24 or above pay the fees charged by colleges and training providers for courses at Level 3 and Level
4, or Advanced and Higher Apprenticeships. Level 3 and Level 4 courses include A levels, Access to
Higher Education Diplomas and other Certificates and Diplomas. "The Agency has been working with
more than 800 colleges and training organisations to ensure they are ready to offer 24+ Advanced
Learning Loans as part of their core training and skills offer to learners.

National Scholarship Fund (England)
The Department of Education has announced that Teachers and special educational needs (SEN)
support staff are now able to bid for funds from the £2 million National Scholarship Fund. Through the
fund teachers can bid for up to £3500 and SEN staff can bid for up to £2000 to deepen their subject
knowledge and develop their skills. To qualify for a scholarship SEN support staff have to work in:
An eligible school in England
Spend at least 50 per cent of their contracted time supporting pupils who have special
educational needs and disabilities in learning based activities
Have achieved qualifications equivalent to, at least, full level three or hold higher level
teaching assistant status.
The application window, which opens for three weeks from 8 April, will offer funding to
teachers in the four priority subjects of English, mathematics, science and SEN.

Enhancement and Enrichment Grant Scheme (England)
The Department for Education has announced the STEM Enhancement and Enrichment (E&E) grant
scheme will re-open for application in September 2013.
Through the schemes, grants of up to £500 will be available to enhance and enrich any subject from
the STEM Directories. The STEM Directories list Enhancement and Enrichment (E&E) opportunities
to support science, engineering, design and mathematics teaching. Some schemes bring exciting
activities into school, others can provide a memorable day out for students or a nationwide
competition to help motivate your science club. They might involve bringing a real scientist, engineer
or mathematician into the classroom, give students access to equipment not readily available or
simulate real-life applications of science and technology. Many schemes can provide supporting
teaching materials to help get the most of the activity.

Arts Council - Strategic Support Fund (England)
The Arts Council England has announced that the third, and final round of its Strategic Support Fund
will re-open for applications in the Autumn of 2013.
Approximately £15 million will be available for projects that address the priorities set out in Culture,
knowledge and understanding: great museums and libraries for everyone and complements the Arts
Council’s Major partner museum and Museum development investment. The programme is open to
any accredited museum based in England (except Major partner museums and national museums)
with over 15,000 visitors per year; any not-for-profit organisation bidding for a project the outputs of
which will benefit the regional museum sector in England; and partnerships between eligible
museums and not for profit organisations. Grants awarded will be in the range of £50,000 and
£500,000.

Climate Challenge Fund (Scotland)
Keep Scotland Beautiful, has announced that the next deadline for applications to the Climate
challenge fund is the 5th July 2013.
Through the Climate Challenge Fund, Communities across Scotland can apply for grants of up to
£150,000 per year to help reduce their carbon footprint and become more energy efficient. Nearly £30
million in total will be awarded to communities who come forward with innovative ideas to tackle their
carbon emissions.
Previous projects supported in the past have included:
Barra and Vatersay Community Ltd which received £62,000 over two years to develop their
community led action plan for the first practical steps to carbon reduction.
St Matthew's Primary School Cycle Club (East Dunbartonshire) which received £18,000 to promote
cycling to primary children of all ages, their parents and teachers..

£2 million Fund to Build Links Between Communities First and
Schools (Wales)
The Welsh Government has announced its new £2 million fund to support greater co-operation and
joint working between schools and Communities First Clusters is now open for applications.
The Communities First Pupil Deprivation Match Fund allows a significant number of Clusters in Wales
to secure additional funding if they can demonstrate how they will work with schools within the school
environment and community to improve the outcomes of young people who live in poverty. There is
already much good practice of close joint working between schools and the Communities First
Programme and the Welsh Government wants to further encourage and support this. Communities
First Clusters and schools will need to work together to develop proposals and submit them to the
Welsh Government for consideration.

BIG Innovation (Wales)
The BIG Lottery Fund has announced that its BIG Innovation Programme has re-opened for
applications.
Through the programme voluntary, community, public and private sector organisations can apply for
grants of between £20,000 and £1 million to support social project ideas that haven’t been tried
anywhere else in the UK. The aim of the fund is to find new solutions which better address emerging
and entrenched social problems and to learn from innovative approaches which can inform wider
policy and practice. A total of £5 million is available and projects can be supported for up to 5 years.
To be eligible for support, at least 75 of beneficiaries will need to live in Wales.
There is a two stage application process and the closing date for stage 1applications is the 17th May
2013.

Rushcliffe Borough Council Launches Schemes to Help Athletes
and Coaches (East Midlands)
Rushcliffe BC has launched two grant schemes to support sport in the Borough. These are the Elite
Sports Sponsorship Grant for talented athletes who are currently performing at international level
within their sport. The scheme will support up to five athletes with a sponsorship grant of £500. The
deadline for applications is Friday 17th May.
In addition the Council has also launched the Coach Scholarship Scheme which enables people who
coach at a club in Rushcliffe to achieve and improve their coaching qualifications and experience.
The scheme aims to encourage volunteers and unqualified coaches to begin coaching, as well as
help qualified coaches to progress and raise the profile of professional coaching.

Grants Available For Community Groups in Former Coalfield Areas
(Kent)
Community groups in Kent's former coalfields are invited to apply for grants to help a range of projects
for the future - following the announcement of almost £25,000 for communities in 2013/14 from the
Coalfields Regeneration Trust.
Grants from £500 to £5,000 are available through Level 1 funding, which is delivered by Dover District
Council in partnership with the Coalfields Regeneration Trust. Grants are provided to support a range
of projects to help coalfield communities. Examples of projects that the Level 1 Programme could
support include:
Improvements to a community facility
A training project that teaches a new skill or enables people to get a qualification
Setting up a new or supporting an existing social enterprise; getting people involved in
physical activity or addressing a local health issue
The establishment of a much needed new service or activity in a community
The provision of childcare places for nursery, pre-school & after school activities
Activities that promote volunteering and get new people involved as volunteers.
Successful projects will have to target the former coalfields wards of Aylesham, Barham Downs,
Eastry, Eythorne and Shepherdswell, Little Stour and Ashstone, Middle Deal and Sholden, Mill Hill,
North Deal and St Margaret's-at-Cliffe.
There is no closing date for applications.
Applications will be accepted until all the monies have been allocated.

Funding Reminders
Esmée Fairbairn Foundation Launches New Food Funding Strand
(UK)
The Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, one of the UK’s largest independent charitable foundations, has
announced the launch of its new food strand. Esmée will offer total funding of £5m over a period of
three years and is inviting applications from organisations focused on understanding and investigating
the critical role that food plays in wellbeing and the interplay between food, sustainability and poverty.
The food strand is open to both large-scale strategic or policy-led interventions and organisations
working on innovative local projects. The foundation will support work that delivers high quality,
innovative local food projects, particularly those that can become financially sustainable and are :
Replicable
Establishes closer links between NGOs, community groups, producers, retailers and industry
in order to create more coherent food sector
Improves people’s understanding of the place that food plays in our lives and shows the role
that access to good quality food can have on wellbeing
Leads to the prioritisation of sustainable food production and consumption in local and
national policy, practice and decision-making
Increases demand for better quality food from sustainable sources, for example, through
changes to public procurement.
The strand is now open for applications and will operate until at least the end of 2015.

Music Industry Talent Development Fund (England)
The performing Rights Society for Music Foundation (PRS) has announced that it will launch a new
Music Industry Talent Development Fund.
This is a partnership between PRS for Music Foundation and Arts Council England which will make
funding of more than £500,000 available to the music industry over the next two years. The fund has
been set up to provide vital financial support which will help talented artists and bands to take their
career to another level. Grants of up to £15,000 will be available, supporting emerging and mid career
artists to develop their recording, writing, performing and touring ambitions.
The new fund will open for applications in May 2013.

Community Sport Activation Fund (England)
Sport England has announced that the next funding round of its £40 million Community Sport
Activation Fund will open for applications on the 7th May 2013.
Through the Community Sport Activation Fund grants of between £50,000 and £250,000 will be
available to sports clubs, schools, local authorities and other not for profit organisations to support
grassroots sports activities at a very local level. The type of activities that can be funded include:
Activities reflecting a broad range of sports; informal opportunities which could lead to regular
participation
Multi-sport activities which provide people with a range of choices and opportunities to suit
them
Family orientated activities with a focus on 14 plus age group; and local activator roles that
focus on directly organising and delivering new opportunities for participation.
The closing date for applications will be the 1st July 2013.

Self Management Impact Fund Re-opens for Applications
(Scotland)
Alliance Scotland which supports people who are disabled, living with a long term condition and
unpaid carers, has announced that round two of the Self Management Impact Fund is now open for
applications.
The Impact Fund has £6 million available between 2013 and 2016 to support work that encourages
people living with long term conditions to learn more about the management of their conditions and to
be become active partners in their own care. The funding is open to partnerships led by a third sector
organisations. Public sector bodies cannot apply for funding directly. They may be part of a
partnership bid, but must not be the lead partner. Grants available range from funding of up to £5,000
to test new and innovative ideas to funding of up to £150,000 to support strategic projects.
The deadline for applications is 5pm on the 13th June 2013.

GwirVol Youth Volunteering Grants (Wales)
GwirVol, which is a partnership of senior representatives from organisations with a key interest or
involvement in youth volunteering, has announced that its Volunteering Grants programme has re-
opened for applications. The aim of the GwirVol Youth Volunteering Grants scheme is to support the
delivery of a wide range of new volunteering opportunities in Wales that will support access to
volunteering for young people aged 14-25 and especially for disadvantaged young people. The
GwirVol grant scheme offers a number of different funding strands. These are:

Millennium Volunteers
International.
The funding available ranges from £3,000 to £30,000 depending on the strand under which you are
applying.

New Programme to Help UK Charities Support People into
Employment (UK)
Microsoft has announced the launch of Britain Works Initiative, and NGO programme which provides
resources and connects UK registered charities working in the employability arena. This initiative is
aimed at helping 500,000 people into employment by giving them access to vital IT skills over the next
3 years. By becoming a Britain Works NGO Programme Partner charities will be able to access
resources, software, training curriculum and dedicated events and webinars. UK registered charities
with an employability programme or who are looking to set up an employability programme in 2010

Canoe Foundation (UK)
The Canoe Foundation has announced that the next closing date for applications for its grants is the
7th May 2013.
The Canoe Foundation makes grants to support or promote paddlesport with a specific focus on
young people and/or people with a disability. The funding is available to not-for-profit organisations,
charities, clubs, schools and other interest groups based in the UK, the Isle of Man or the Channel
Islands.
The Small Grants Panel has a budget of £25,000 per year and usually awards grants of up to £1,000.
However, in exceptional circumstances the Small Grants Panel may award up to a maximum of
£2,000.
Larger grants (anything above £2,000) and those which fall into the other key areas; Places, Heritage,
and International, are decided on by the Charity's Trustees.
Previous projects supported include:
The Cardiff Canoe Club which received funding to purchase an Old Town Pack Canoe and
accessories. The main objective of purchasing this boat was to introduce junior paddlers to
open canoes in a pool environment.
Mary Hare School for Deaf Children was awarded £2,000 by the Canoe Foundation to
purchase a fleet of 14 sit on top kayaks, paddles and safety equipment.

Wellcome Trust Small Arts Awards (UK)
The Wellcome Trust has announced that the next application deadline under its Small Arts Awards is
the 28th June 2013.
The Small Arts Awards provides grants of up to £30,000 to projects that engage the public with
biomedical science through the arts. This can include:
Dance
Drama
Performance arts
Visual arts
Music
Film
Craft
Photography
Creative writing
Digital media.
The aim of the awards is to support arts projects that reach new audiences which may not traditionally
be interested in science. The scheme is open to a wide range of people including, among others:

Education officers.

EAGA Charitable Trust Grant Programme (UK)
The EAGA Charitable Trust has announced that its grant making programme has re-opened for
applications.
The Trust supports projects and research into the causes of fuel poverty. There is no minimum or
maximum grant level that organisations can apply for and most grants last between two and three
years.
Previous projects funded include:
The development of a simple easy to use tool to help social housing providers in England and Wales
identify homes that are energy inefficient and set targets for their improvement to ensure all homes
are capable of delivering affordable energy
The development of a methodology for predicting the level of fuel poverty in small areas. The Trustees
meet three times a year to consider applications.
The next application deadline is the 31st May 2013.

ICI Education Cooperation Programme (UK)
The European Commission has announced a new call for proposals under its ICI Education
Cooperation Programme. The general objective of the programme is to enhance mutual
understanding between people of the EU and the Partner Countries by stimulating partnerships
between higher education and training institutions in the EU and in Partner Countries. This call covers
co-operation projects with Australia, Japan, New Zealand and Republic of Korea. A total of €2.45
million is available to promote Joint Mobility Projects and Joint Degree Projects. This call is open to a
consortium of higher education institutions and/or post-secondary vocational and training institutions.
Applicants must be from one of the Partner Countries and from one of the 27 EU Member States or
Croatia.
The closing date for applications is the 15th May 2013.

Europe for Citizens Programme – Support Measures (UK)
The European Commission has announced a new call for proposals under its Europe for Citizens
Programme – Action1 Measure 2.2 Support Measures.
Through this programme, citizens have the opportunity to be involved in transnational exchanges and
cooperation activities, contributing to the process of European integration. Through Action1 Measure
2.2 grants of between €30,000 and €100,000 are available to support activities which may lead to the
establishment of long lasting partnerships and networks promoting active Europe citizenship. This call
is open to federations/associations of local authorities or other bodies with specific knowledge /
experience of citizenship.

Europe for Citizens Programme – Citizens Projects (UK)
The European Commission has announced a new call for proposals under its Europe for Citizens
Programme – Action 1 – Measure 2.1 Citizens' projects. The measure “Citizen’s projects” aims at
exploring innovative methodologies and approaches to encourage citizens’ active participation at
European level and to stimulate the dialogue between European citizens and European institutions.
Under this measure a variety of projects of a transnational and cross-sectoral dimension, directly
involving citizens will be supported. Priority is given to projects aimed at encouraging local level
participation. Eligible organisation that can apply include civil society organisations and local
authorities. A project must involve organisations/institutions from at least 5 participating countries

Support for the Homesless (UK)
CRASH, the construction and property industries' charity for homeless people, provides support to
organisations in the UK that help homeless people. CRASH does this by supporting improvements to
hostels, day centres, night shelters, training centres and move-on accommodation, for frontline
homelessness agencies who work directly with homeless people.
CRASH seeks to support these organisations by;
providing professional expertise such as, architects, quantity surveyors, project managers and
specialist engineers;
providing cash grants;
and /or providing free building materials free of charge from supporting suppliers.
To be eligible for support organisations must be registered charities, have legal hold on the building in
question, either freehold or lease for at least 3 years, and the building must be used to deliver
services to homeless people or a high percentage of people who are homeless or be related to the
charity's administrative functions. Applications can be made at any time.

Funding to Enhance the Quality of Life of Older People (UK)
The Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) Joint Programme, which is a joint research and development
funding programme to enhance the quality of life of older people in Europe through the use of
Information and Communication Technologies, has issued a new call for proposals.
This call for proposals focuses on the challenges to an ageing population when society requires the
use of technology by all its citizens, including older people. This call will fund proposals for innovative
ICT-solutions that enable older adults to continue managing their occupation – at work in an office, a
factory or any working environment. Proposals must present a work plan specifying the innovation
process from development and validation of the concept through user involvement and pilot testing to
final prototype, supplemented by a business model for sustainable market development.

Crisis –Changing Lives Programme (UK)
Crisis Applications are accepted throughout the year apart from during the summer period (mid July
to mid September).
Crisis, the national Homeless Charity has announced that the Changing Lives Programme is currently
open to applications.. The Crisis Changing Lives programme provides financial awards of up to
£2,500 to single people who are homeless or settling into a home and looking for support so that they
may achieve their vocational goals.
There are three possible grants:
the Education Grant;
the Self Employment grant;
and the Into Employment grant.
Applicants must be; single (not living in a partnership situation with another person); over 18; Recently
homeless (e.g. slept rough, lived in a hostel/refuge, ‘sofa surfed’ etc.in the last 5 years) free from
alcohol, drug or other substance misuse for at least 6 months prior to application; working with a
Support Worker for at least 6 months prior to the application; and eligible to remain and work in the
UK indefinitely.
All grants are transferred to local support organisations which administer and control the grant on
behalf of their client.
Grants recipients who have been progressing well towards their identified goal in their first grant
application can apply for a second grant, providing they received their grant between one and three
years ago. Applicants can apply for up to £2500 for a second grant.
