SPRING CAMPS 2018 INSIDE

How rare it is that men get together not only for an activity like dirt bike riding, but also to share life and its lessons. The weekend of April 20-22 was a great visual and spiritual experience. Twenty bike riders came from all backgrounds and distances to take on the trails and compare notes and machines.

The weekend gave men a chance to share, teach or listen. Riding the trails gave us the practical opportunity to care for each other, that is to help each other up when we were down. And I’ve got the bruises to prove it!

The Geldart family provided their property as our base, sleeping space and a welcoming atmosphere to debate Suzuki verses Yamaha.

Gerard and Linda Abdoo stepped in for the Hinson Family to provide great leadership, meals and set us thinking about living collectively or individually. The studies were well led by Barry Bassett and Michael Carlisle. Sadly, most of us have grown up in an individualistic society where men are supposed to be success stories only. It’s a pleasant surprise to know that when men dare to be honest about themselves or their situation, it gives others permission to do the same. Barry and Michael encouraged us to have mates who can be accountable to each other and who encourage each other in God, knowing that we are not alone in our struggles.

How grateful I am for the mentors in my life. I have had many successes and many low times too. Systems and individuals may have let me down, but God never has. I love shining where I am in Rye in Victoria. I love people and their stories. I’ve gathered beautiful people around me, not just for laughs and fun, but to be accountable to. They need me and I need them. I have a fantastic male friend who I decided to try to help some 3 years ago, now 3 years later I ask myself, who has helped who?

“I would like to thank all who have prayed and supported me practically in my heart surgery and recovery (Peter had surgery 27th March).”

I’m pleased to say that everything has gone as well as it could and I’m sure that is due to the prayer of many Godly people. I was riding my push bike on the rail trail with our boys and developed a sore throat but not sore enough to stop riding. The next week I went to the doctors over something minor and mentioned my uncomfortable throat. He booked in some tests and next thing I was having heart surgery.

I had 2 ribs broken during the operation which have almost healed but are still giving me a little bit of pain at times. My wounds have healed well. I ended up having 5 grafts on my heart when we thought I was going to have 3. I have been doing cardiac rehab at the local Alexandra hospital.

It was great to get back to chaplaincy at Eildon primary school and I was welcomed by the students like I was some sort of AFL football star which was a bit embarrassing. I have been back to the men’s Bible study group that I lead among other things. I am slowly getting back into ministry as I improve in my health.

I went to the Men’s Camp at Halls Gap this 1st-3rd June and really enjoyed getting back into doing some camping ministries.

Thank you for your prayers for Wendy, James and Benjamin as I went through it all. Wendy has been awesome as she cared for me and provided love and support to me, probably way more than she would know”.

We arrived early and set up the campsite at Bridgewater Caravan park, Terry Barnes and I cooked up several kilos of sausages donated by the Park management who just love what we do. This gave dads and their kids something to eat as they arrived and set themselves up.

We had 39 attend the camp, coming from Ararat, Echuca, Bendigo and Donald regions, with a good mix of farmers, technical, business and Health care backgrounds.

During the weekend Dads and their kids enjoyed caving, canoeing, Knot tying with Rowan Nash and Bush skills with Terry, also swimming and other games around the camp.

Our Chef Adrian Hensley treated us to gourmet food, and even some handy cooking lessons, which were very popular.

Our speaker Shan Ooi challenged and inspired us with stimulating teachings from the bible resulting in

some great discussions. In the evenings Shane and Howard interviewed each other over two nights asking some deep and searching questions about their life journeys.

Even though this was Shane’s first time public speaking, a few of the Dads thought he was a professional motivational speaker. So, well done Shane.

As we departed our ways Monday, one dad said he was going home to book into next years camp straight away. So the Lord is to be praised as His work goes on.

It continues to amaze me how a week out from camp you may only have a few people coming then in the last few days it explodes in numbers. This always challenges my faith but I am learning to smile and know God will bless the camp.

GRAB A DAD CAMPCAMP REPORTMARCH 2018

Hi! I’m Stephanie! I led on ESA Gippsland Junior camp 2018. It was such an awesome camp! We only had 11 children and this was the first time I’ve ever led on a camp this small, but I loved it! I found it was easier to build relationships with the kids and we had the opportunity to be able to have really great conversation with them too! The activities were lots of fun. I enjoyed the slippery slide the best. It was so cool to see the kids enjoy themselves on it!

There was one particular camper that I really connected with and on

our bush walk she was really asking me deep questions about God and she mentioned that she wanted to continue to read her bible. I’ve never seen a 13 year old seek God the way she was and have so much determination to read the bible and learn more about who He is! When the other kids were playing their own activities, I’d see her just sitting there reading the bible! It was the most exciting thing for me and impacting not just for her but even for myself. The topic on camp was on identity, the talks

were so great for the kids and easy for them to understand. It was encouraging to see a few of them really giving their answers on a lot of the questions we had.

I went into doing camp not really knowing how God was going to use me. Sometimes you go into it thinking you may not be as impacting to them as you realise, but for me I’ve learned that God can use you in whatever way He wants, and He places you in situations for a reason. It’s not about us and what we do, but ultimately it’s about what Jesus does through us!

FEBRUARY 2018GIPPSLAND FAMILY BOATING CAMPCAMP REPORT

We’ve enjoyed some great camps over the past few months. We praise God for the privilege of getting to walk side by side with people for a time, sharing and growing in faith and in that most wonderful news that Jesus died to save us sinners.

ESA Gippsland Family Boating camp held on the 23rd - 25th of Feb at Eagle Point was a great weekend. It was complicated by my having a broken leg but many people stepped in to ensure the weekend went ahead. Jadon and Susie Dennis did a marvellous job directing the camp and cooking. We are so thankful for their commitment to this camp over quite a few years now. Our speaker Steve Elliott drove a couple of hours each day to bring us God’s word and to lead us in discussion. A special mention also goes to the Sunbury Baptist Young Adults group for driving over four hours to spend the weekend at camp bonding and getting to know one another better.

The weekends sailing was enhanced by two generous donations: a 14” paper tiger catamaran and a 20” Farr 6 yacht. Tom Deans has had the yacht in his shed for the last 18 years and decided to move it on, but wanted it to go where it would be appreciated and enjoyed by youth.

The ESA Men’s camp was held in Halls Gap again and it was such an encouraging time.

This year’s speaker was Mark Young who spoke on some of Jesus’ “I AM” statements from John’s Gospel. Mark spoke about I AM the Bread of Life, I AM the Light of the World, I AM the Gate, I AM the Good Shepherd, and I AM the Resurrection and the Life. Speaking about all of these I AM’s we learnt different ways God cares for us. Mark also had practical and sometimes challenging ideas for us with each I AM statement. Thank you Mark for your efforts over the weekend.

We were blessed to have Brad and his son Seth cooking for us. It was the first time cooking on a camp for Seth, job well done young man. I had a comment that it’s worth coming on the weekend just for the food.

The music is always a highlight of camp led by the Creswick gang with a few last minute players who had brought along a guitar. It’s a great sound hearing all the blokes singing praises to our God.

Saturday afternoon is free time and groups of blokes went in different directions exploring Halls Gap and the Grampians. Some went on vigorous walks up into the hills and mountains while others braved the walk to the coffee and ice-cream shops (led by Steve Wheaton). Wherever blokes went there were awesome conversations.

Overall the weekend was one of spiritual encouragement with fantastic fellowship. Peter Geldart

ESA is known to be a resourceful Gospel organisation. So when the numbers for the Bright MTB weekend camp weren’t reached, we decided to do another almost famous Gippsland ‘Day Ride’. Applications started coming in and within a few days we had eleven enthusiastic bikers.

Starting from Traralgon we quickly made connections on the bus journey as we gave each other a snapshot of our lives. Then through sweat, perseverance and courage we conquered many of Blores Hills MTB tracks.

While traveling to Mt Taylor near Bairnsdale we discussed what ‘repentance’ meant.

Why? Because at the beginning of the New Testament both John the Baptist and Jesus started by calling people to repent and so it must be worth considering. Great

engagement and discussion was had as we ‘thrashed’ out its meaning and implications .

Mt Taylor is a must do track for mountain bikers. It was the lateness of the day that caused us to head for home not our desire to stop doing shuttle runs on the technical downhill tracks.

What a great way to meet new friends, have fun, and keep fit for life both physically and spiritually.

Increase Conference was inspired from a desire to encourage youth and young adults in their faith by providing space for worship, teaching and fellowship. We want to see young people increase their faith in God, their love for Him and his Kingdom.

Welcome to the Ronalds FamilyIn February this year ESA welcomed its latest Pastoral Workers Scott and Deborah Ronalds to the team. Scott and Deborah have been involved with ESA for many years, they both started as campers in 2002 in their teens before moving on the leaders and directors for both Gippsland Junior and Lake Tyers camps. in 2014 they then took up a new challenge following their passion for helping youth and young adults to deepen their relationship with God starting and directing Teen DC (teen discipleship) Camp in Gippsland for the last five years.

Scott grew up in the Gippsland region and enjoys listening to music, riding push bikes and running with the family dog Cookie. Scott has run his own video production company for the last 13 years in the Gippsland region and has undertaken video and editing work for local companies producing television commercials, local school concerts and some documentary work.

Deborah also grew up in Gippsland and enjoys reading, sewing and although on a break at the moment has taken up dog agility with Cookie. Deborah is a qualified primary school teacher and has worked in a

number of local schools including Liddiard Road Primary.

Scott and Deborah have been married for 11 years and have 3 children, Jack 6, Suzie 4, Lilly 2 with a fourth child due as this edition goes to print. They live in Traralgon and attend Traralgon Family Fellowship Church where Scott also works one day a week in Pastoral care.

Scott and Deborah enjoy mentoring younger leaders. They have a passion to see young leaders be encouraged and develop their gifts. They are hoping to set up a camp or retreat to bring leaders and directors together for encouragement and training.

Since February Scott has been meeting with pastors and youth pastors around the Latrobe valley, hearing their stories and how the youth are going and promoting ESA

camps. He has also been using his media skills to make promo videos and is currently producing videos on inspiring stories about how God is using ESA to touch lives.

Please pray for Scott and Deborah as they settle into this role at ESA.

MAY 2018GIPPSLAND DIRT BIKE WEEKENDCAMP REPORTEleven riders got together to conquer 300kms of riding some of the toughest terrain the Victorian High Country has to offer. We were ably led by expert tracker Paul McGrath, complete in his 1980s oil skin motorcycle jacket, holes and all.

Cheynes Bridge to Dargo via the Pinnacles was day 1. Two flat tyres, two bikes running out of fuel and helping out a group of fellow riders in need was all in a days riding. Noah set a cracking pace on his 250 Honda and the three Mallee boys tackled the hills with ease.

An overnight stopover in Dargo with a hot shower and wonderful food was enjoyed by all. Quote of the weekend came from a stiff and sore rider putting on his boots the next morning, “Why are my boot clips further away today?” Day 2 was Dargo to Cheynes Bridge via the tracks running south of the Avon Wilderness. A few running repairs were needed along the way and our trusty tracker Paul was called upon to help numerous groups with directions.

Gerard capably led the studies on going deeper in our walk with our Saviour and each other. Our hosts in Dargo sat in with us for our Saturday night study and made comment that they were genuinely touched by a group of guys tackling deeper stuff. What a blessing to share the gospel with them. Gerard supported us over the weekend with a constant supply of Linda’s fine cooking. Gerard & Linda, what a blessing they are, lets support them with our prayer, love and finance as they humbly serve with ESA in the wider Gippsland area and beyond.

Joash took the perpetual trophy award for a super human effort, driving eight hours to get to camp and riding a Suzuki 400 where it wasn’t really made to go. Great effort Joash.

I had a wonderful weekend and I am sure I can speak for all who attended that is was a great time, I appreciated genuine Christian fellowship and riding with a great group of guys.

ESA Camping is the camping ministry of ESA Country Ministries. Our aim is to Equip, Serve and Assist country churches in their outreach and discipleship.

About Camp ApplicationsAll camp applications are done through our online application process. Paper applications can be requested through the office if required.

To be fair to all, our policies are:

1. Full fees to be paid prior to camp closing date.

2. Your camp fee includes a non-refundable $30 Administration charge.

Thankyou to CYC Christian Camping (Forest Edge)ESA appreciate the generosity of CYC Christian Camping (Forest Edge) for their recent gift of 22 Mountain Bikes.

This will enable us to broaden our use of mountain biking as an activity on camps.

The bikes are currently being cleaned and repaired by students at Maffra as part of the Secondary College Chaplaincy Program.

CAMP REPORT COBRAM FISHING CAMP APRIL 2017

Right from the start we could sense Gods provision as prayer after prayer were answered. From finding a suitably large camp area to accommodate the 46 campers, complete with our own boat loading area, fantastic pre-prepared food by Adrian Hensley (Chef in Bendigo), great talks that both challenged and grew us by Stephen Armytage and absolutely perfect weather. Even the fishing efforts produced some good keepers.

Geoff Pearse did a great job managing the spiritual input with thought provoking interviews of young people in isolated parts of the state and how ESA camps like this one played a huge role in keeping their faith alive throughout the year, to working with Stephen in providing us with a fantastic spiritual input through the studies and small group discussions.

A big thank you to Carrie Pearse and Sonia Hinson who worked hard to provide us with wonderful meals. Especially the banquets each night that Adrian Hensley had prepared for us to enjoy. “It was 5 star dining.”

While this camp has no set agenda apart from eating, sleeping and FISHING, there were lots of other spontaneous things going on such as taking some canoes into Cobram where a bunch of campers floated back down stream to camp, having biscuit rides behind Dave Molyneux’s boat, going for coffees in town or walks in the bush or just sitting round the camp fire chatting. This is a great camp to come on each year. Even being the main organiser this year I had time to relax and enjoy myself with a group of fantastic like-minded people.
