DETAILS INSIDE

A Disney AdventureWe all know of the wonderful world of Disney, a world of imagination, superheroes and fun. Anglesea winter teen camp created a world of Disney for ourselves.

We had a great time with visits from many characters from various sets and stories, ages and imaginations!

Spending time together is always a highlight whether on the basketball or volleyball court playing games and conquering challenges of various kinds; eating fabulous food at every meal; praying for and encouraging each other in cabins, worshipping God together in song and wrestling in the mud.

A highlight for many was the boys and girls day; God brought great healing and regeneration in many hearts; it was amazing to experience the power of words in apologies and statements of truth that God spoke through.

Julia Fulton was our speaker and she spoke about the gospel, it gives us a clear picture of real

life; the gospel allows us to deal with all aspects of our life, including our shame and guilt, it allows us to be totally free! We all were inspired, encouraged and challenged.

We got to shoot arrows at each other playing arrow attack; had an adventurous day in Torquay in the park playing games, hunt the leader, and of course we can’t miss the flash mob dance that is a classic winter tradition.

We had a great sense of God continuing to change lives, continuing to speak into the hearts of many to allow continual transformation.

Campers left camp wanting to continue to communicate with their new friends and continue sharing and speaking into each others’ lives and study the Bible together.

Campers left camp with a greater understanding of God, the wonderful love He has for us that He has shown us in Jesus, and such great encouragement in living and sharing the gospel!

Welcome to our end of year edition of In Step, we’re thankful that you would take the time to read about how things are going at ESA.

We have a great range of Summer Camps coming up over the next few months, I encourage you to check them out and share with your friends. We’re working hard to provide high quality camping experiences at an affordable price.

We welcomed Ruth Parfett to the ESA team recently as our bookkeeper, Ruth lives in Glenburn near Yea and has been a Christian most of her life. Ruth replaces Katelyn Fowler who has done such a great job with our finances and has now moved into a fulltime role with an IT company. We thank Katelyn and wish her well!

We’re thankful to God for your support over the years and we look forward to what God has ahead for us in 2019. It feels too early to wish you a Merry Christmas but we trust the Christmas season would be full of Gods blessings for you and your family.

God Bless You, David

@esaorgau

This year Lake Tyers Teen camp in East Gippsland celebrated its 20th year.

What a blessing it is to look back over the years and see many campers who now serve Jesus in different ways. Our directors for 2018 Scott & Deborah started as campers, became leaders and camp directors and have on to gospel mission through ESA as Pastoral Workers.

ESA Lake Tyers Teen camp 2018 was a great camp. Wake boarding, biscuiting, canoeing, mountain bikes, caving, hunt the leader and an 80’s dance party were just some of the activities enjoyed by campers and leaders alike. Our speaker Peter Harvey challenged the campers about the disconnected nature of our tech saturated lives. He encouraged them to connect with the real world, real values, real people and with the real and living God. What a privilege it was to be able to present the word of God to our campers in many different ways over the week. We saw significant

change in the lives of these young people as they experienced the love of Christ through the leaders and experienced the wisdom of the bible speaking into their everyday life situations.

One mum was telling us what a wonderful time her child had and said “he could have handled a few more days like that”. (It is so good to see teens just being themselves without all the masks of protection up!)

We are so thankful for our leaders, who gave of their time and finances to come on camp and who served so sacrificially. We are encouraged by their desire to grow in their own relationships with Jesus. Thanks to Liyin and Lyn who were our wonderful cooks. They not only cooked great food but they shared a passion for the gospel. We are grateful for their encouragement and for the love they show.

Thanks be to our great God for the gospel & discipleship opportunities which He has given over these past 20 years.

July 2nd saw us embark on the very first Swan Hill Teen camp at the Pioneer Settlement lodge.

23 campers kicked off a week of fun, catching up with old friends, or meeting new ones. Our kiwi speaker Ben spoke about who God is and our perspectives of him. He challenged us to consider if these perspectives need to change and helped us to become aware of our spiritual gifts. Finally, he encouraged us to get involved serving God and just start somewhere!

We chatted more about these topics in our small groups, and also had electives, on topics such as how to share God with those around us, and our identity.

There was plenty of running around games to burn off some energy! We had plenty of it with all the delicious food David and Wendy Watts were giving us.

We enjoyed an ‘Amazing Race’ around Swan Hill, and a canoeing and fire building afternoon. Lots of campers sounded like they were auditioning for The Voice, singing along to the musical ‘The Greatest Showman’ at our movie night.

We finished the week off with a banquet, op shop formal and bush dance. One highlight for leaders and campers was splitting into genders and having a question time with leaders - asking anything!

There was a fantastic spirit of openness and honesty throughout the camp, which was certainly evident that afternoon.

It was exciting to see a sense of community develop as we were real and learnt from each other.

We can’t wait to continue this in 2019!

Meet ESA Volunteers

Tamika English is one of our volunteer Camp Directors on Phillip island Junior Camp

How did you get connected to ESA?

It was a generational thing. My Gran sent my mum & aunty on camps. My parents attended camps, and from there I started coming with my parents as the “kids of camp parents/directors”, attending junior and teen camps all over Victoria, leading on camps, and the rest is history

Tell us a little more about your life?

I’m a married gal, living in Melbourne, who grew up in Bendigo. I’m someone who loves God’s creation, helping His creation, and being surrounded by His creation. I love people, flowers, the beach, the bush, & being outdoors. I enjoy capturing creation or beauty in photos. I’m also passionate about empowering people to be who God’s created them to be and helping them realise that if they have breath they have purpose

What’s your favourite bible verse or passage and why do you like it?

One of my favourite stories in the Bible is the story of Jairus’ daughter who was believed to be dead (in Mark 5:36-42). Everyone thought she was dead, Jesus knew she wasn’t, raising her up again to live! It brings me hope and empowerment to all situations, that Jesus is the ultimate hope. I can trust Him whole heartedly, and know that anything in His plan, He can bring to life, even if it looks like it’s dead and gone.

What’s your favourite place in Victoria?

In the country, by the sea, any place where my husband is or in musical worship (by myself or in a group).

What are you looking forward to at Phillip Island Junior Camp?

Having a crazy amount of fun, running around & being a looney, leading with an incredible team, sowing God’s love into both camper’s and leader’s lives, seeing what God does in all our lives, growing more in who God’s created me to be, and building the Kingdom of God!

Jek Holloway is one of our volunteer Camp Directors on Camp Bridgewater

How did you get connected to ESA?

I’ve been going to ESA camps since I was a kid, my first camp was at Portland many years ago. Over time, I was invited to help lead on a few camps which has kept me involved.

Tell us a little more about your life?

Born and raised in a Christian home, I’m the oldest of 3 children. I left home after Year 12 and moved to the Kew Student Residence, studying Science and majoring in Chemical systems as I wanted to work in Norway as a Chemical Engineer. I didn’t enjoy the course as hoped, but I graduated and now I work full time with my dad in the family business and I love it!

What’s your favourite bible verse or passage and why do you like it?

I don’t really have one favourite but Romans and Proverbs have had the most impact on my life so far. Learning about salvation when I was 15 from Romans 10, my nan leaving me with a letter to encourage me before she passed away with Romans 12 written as the passage on her heart for me. And Proverbs 3 v 5,6, these passages speak about trust, serving and faith… outside of my logic and human understanding which is a daily battle for me.

What’s your favourite place in Victoria?

Pretty much any mountain with a good view, Great Ocean Road is pretty special and Daniel’s Donuts because they are healthy.

What are you looking forward to at Camp Bridgewater?

Watching the confidence of the campers grow over the week as they make friends, worship and explore God and faith is a highlight. I’m also keen on some more beach worship and round 2 on the waterslide.

Teen DC 2018 was yet again a camp to remember. With its cosy vibes, time to chill out, awesome teaching on discipleship, and great space for bonding, it was altogether a remarkably special camp.

This year, we heard from singer-songwriter Levi McGrath. He spoke on what it means to truly be one of Jesus’ followers; a life devoted to Jesus is, by very nature, a life devoted to servanthood – helping those that the world shuns, reaching out to the outcast, befriending the sinner, loving those that others have deemed unlovable.

All because Jesus has done this for us; we give out of the abundance

that has been given to us. It’s His love that compels us to share the riches of the Gospel with a world that is so desperately poor (both physically and spiritually!) Not only did we receive great teaching from Levi, but we were also blessed with the opportunity to hear songs he had written about his own experiences in reaching out to others.

Another blessing was being able to hear from a range of different leaders in workshops throughout the day. These are times when we can learn about unique topics that may not necessarily be taught on in a general church setting, such as: Being the fragrance of Christ,

hymns and songs, leadership, tricky life questions, and evangelism.

Other hallmark features of Teen DC that were back again this year included cultivation of a habitual morning quiet time among leaders and campers alike, board games/card games (x1000), worship and heart-to-hearts around the campfire, a strong focus on prayer, and the family-like atmosphere that’s created when people are given the chance to be real with each other! I wouldn’t miss it next year if I were you!

Living Life to the FullThe 2018 ESA Seniors camp gave a wonderful opportunity for people from around Victoria – coming from places as diverse as Kerang, Donald, Bendigo, Ballarat, Warrnambool and Melbourne to gather and relax, enjoy music and singing, hear each other’s stories over meals, play games, build new friendships, have much laughter - A cheerful heart is good medicine [Proverbs 17:22]

A real highlight was the Hawiian evening with appropriate dress and décor and Lynton Wade brought daily teaching from the Word of God.

There was wonderful cuisine prepared by our cooks and the

opportunity was there to explore some of the Grampian environs, in fact, at one earlier Seniors camp an octogenenarian (87 years of age) climbed the Pinnacle which at 686 metres altitude is a well known lookout in the Grampians providing a spectacular view.

Thankyou Geoff and Carrie Pearse and Jenny Whitfield providing excellent leadership for this camp and John and Doreen Brown for your culinary delights.

Some are already making plans to return to this camp next year.

OCTOBER 2018BOUNDARY BEND CAMPCAMP REPORT

BONUS CAMP PICTURES

Camping at Boundary BendESA was invited to be part of a family camp on the Murray River in the last weekend of the October Vic school holidays.

People/families mainly came from the Mildura area. The idea for the camp came from a conversation between some individuals who wanted a laid back camp that anyone could come to, Christian or non- Christian.

People arranged their own activities as well as some group times doing things together, like canoeing. Fishing was a big part of the weekend with some big carp being caught, for some campers it was the first time they had ever caught a fish which made it even more exciting.

ESA provided cooking equipment and campers cooked their own food which everyone then shared with each other. Saturday night there were some amazing meals cooked in camp ovens, yummy. Peter Geldart and Geoff Pearse were the ESA workers who went on the camp with Peter leading some Bible study times by the edge of the river. We looked at the wise and foolish builders found in Matthews gospel.

Some people stayed at the Boundary Bend caravan park in cabins while others camped on the sand bar by the river in tents and swags. The caravan park is only 800 meters from the sand bar so this worked really well.

This looks like being an annual event so keep your ear out for it next year and feel free to come along and enjoy Gods awesome creation and some awesome fellowship in Boundary Bend.

Blessings Peter Geldart

CAMP REPORT HALLS GAP YOUTH CAMP SEPTEMBER 2018Whaaaaaaaaaaat’s up ESA Halls Gap 2018?! Bahhhhooooooop!

This was the cry across the dinner tables as announcements commenced.

Halls Gap 2018 was a fantastic week away with 75 eager bodies filling the campsite. The scene was set for an awesome week as 47 campers arrived at Halls Gap early on the Monday morning. The leaders were ready to go with some old school get-to-know-you games and camp had finally started.

The studies this week were delivered to us by Terrence Morse and Sam Dempsey. They had obviously done a huge amount of preparation work because their studies were insightful and challenging while asking the question “How’s your Heart?”. It was such a blessing to have Terrence and Sam be available leaders as well as present the studies.

Favourite activities such as the Pinnacle hike, Choice Day and Hunt the Leader were some highlights for the week. One memorable moment

was as one our last campers crossed the “finish line” at the top of the Pinnacle, the rest of the campers erupted into thunderous applause in congratulating them! A special (typical) ESA moment!

The food at Halls Gap is always a highlight. Vern had prepared everything to perfection and thanks to Jo and the Mackas, it was a great team to help fill the camper’s tummies! There was plenty of “Jo” laughs with Macka’s jokes all week too!

Thank you so much catering team!

With incredible God moments in worship and studies, awesome friends around, amazing and available leaders and two very equipped, motivated and gifted co-directors in Michael and Jack, Halls Gap 2018 was one of the best so far! We give all our glory to God for allowing such an event to happen.

Bring on 2019!

David LittlejohnDavid was a Christian man who was involved in the Marysville campsite volunteering his time and skills as an electrician and plaster sheeter. David helped in the construction of the ‘Forest Retreat’ accommodation building. David passed away from asbestos related illness and his funeral service was in Ocean Grove 30/8/18 and was well attended by past and current ESA staff and

volunteers. David Littlejohn was the father of Adam who worked at ESA’s campsite in Marysville for many years until Feb 2009 fires. ESA would like to acknowledge David, his service to ESA and God’s kingdom and send its condolences to Adam, David’s wife Jenny and to the rest of the Littlejohn family. Peter Geldart
