Despite the weather, the Stayin’ Alive Wellness Expo on Saturday, October 28 turned out to be a fun and educational event for all. Check out the photo recap of the event. A total of $592 was raised on behalf of cystic fibrosis, which was the most raised on any campus in any one week. Thanks to the students, faculty, staff and community for your support and participation. Join in! If you are like me, you are begin- ning to notice that things are busy around here these days. If you are like me, you are begin-ning to notice that things are busy around here these days. From Halloween, Stayin’ Alive, and through December, our campus is a center of activity!

Getting involved in campus activi-ties is a great way to meet peo-ple and for you to enhance your experience at the University. As

many of you already know, com-munity service is part of the mis-sion of our institution. We en-courage you to engage in campus activities such as PTK, student government, charity events, as well as workshops and celebra-tions. These events can help you to connect to others who may serve as part of your support network, help to relieve stress and anxiety, and keep you con-

nected to the campus overall.

While I will always emphasize that your studies come first, my experience tells me that students who get involved with the cam-pus community and the various activities that are offered are the ones that get the most from their academic experience. So, jump in, meet people, and get involved! I look forward to seeing you on Campus.

FYI…. The website MySpace.com has recently been blocked at all Keiser campuses.

From the Library Meet Marie Urbina Hello, I am happy to start my new position at Keiser Uni-versity. I am originally from New Jersey, I received my Master of Library Science from Rutgers University, and I moved to Florida a year and a half ago. I am usually here in the evenings so come say hello. In our technology-driven world, my job is becoming

more and more about helping you use the com-puters and our licensed databases to make the most of your library ex-perience. Some of you are a little shy about computers, and some of you could teach me a thing or two. To those of you who could learn a bit more technology, re-member no one was born knowing how to use com-puters. As I always tell

computer shy folks, you can’t learn anything with-out lots of practice, so if you don’t catch on to a database or keyboard trick right away, just keep at it. To those of you who already know the key-board backwards and forwards, Keiser has all the right classes to help you learn cutting edge skills. If you do need help, just ask me. If I seem busy, interrupt me. That’s why I’m here.

With the upcoming holiday break, you will be receiving your student statements for January on the last week of December. Because of the high volume of mail, your statements will be mailed before the payment date just as a friendly reminder. Our office will be open during your winter break with the exception of Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Have a happy and safe holiday break!!!

Medical Assisting—Staying Strong in West Palm Beach P A G E 3 V O L U M E 1 I S S U E 8

Being a Medical Assistant in Palm Beach County continues to get more diversified every year. Cur-rent statistics state that through 2014 the Medical Assistant will continue to be in the top 10 mar-ketable allied health fields through-out the country and locally. Along with this comes an ever increasing salary range. We are extremely proud of our Medical Assisting program at Keiser University due to the fact that the medical community recognizes the extensive abilities of our graduating students as they enter externship. Often times we have been told that they will not hire anyone except KC students because they are” ex-tremely employable”. The Medical Assistant program is

unique in that a student completes their core classes learning: • Phlebotomy, vital signs,

ECG’s Pharmacology, srugical office procedures, medical terminology, administrative duties

• CPR, Basic radiography, anat-

omy and physiology. • An eight week onsite extern-

ship at a physician’s office be-fore moving into general edu-cation courses to complete the Associate’s degree

Did you know that you are able to monitor your student loans on the internet? Most lenders have now made student loan information easier and faster to access via the internet so that students can keep track of their federal and private funding. Simply go to your lender’s website and create a username and password while verifying your personal information and you can see informa-tion such as your loan balances, interest charged, due dates and payment history. As an incentive for creating an account on the internet, Sallie Mae even enters your name into a sweepstakes drawing for up to $25000.00 towards your student loans. You can also sign up to receive payment reminders via your email address so that you are never late on payments.

There is a $1500 scholarship opportunity from USA Funds. ♦ Apply online at www.usafunds.org/scholarship between

Dec. 15, 2006 and Feb. 15, 2007. ♦ For high school seniors, currently enrolled university

students or incoming university students. ♦ For students from households with annual incomes of

$35,000 or less. ♦ Priority consideration given to students who are mem-

bers of an ethnic-minority group or have a documented physical disability.

“Often times we

have been told

that local

employers will

students

because there

are ‘extremely

employable’”..

This system allows the student to begin working in the field after only eight months full time day classes or fourteen months part time evening. They are encouraged to sit for the Registered Medical Assisting certification exam through the AMT and can conveniently take it here at KC. They are also quali-fied to take the Florida Basic X-Ray license exam and a national phlebotomy certification exam. The medical assistant works closely with Physicians, Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners mostly in the ambu-latory care setting performing a wide variety of skills .Because of their diverse skills some local hospitals have begun hiring the medical assistant as an emer-gency room patient care technicians as well.

Employment Tip of the Month…. From APPLIED CARD SYSTEMS

HOW TO RESEARCH A PRO-

SPECTIVE EMPLOYER You just scheduled an inter-

view with the Walt Disney

Company regarding an open

position you are interested in.

It is now time to do your due

diligence. There are several

avenues to conduct your re-

search. This article will go into

two of them.

YAHOO.COM

Using the Internet, go to Ya-hoo.com. Click on finance, and then symbol look up. Enter the name of the company you are inter-ested in. For this example we are using The Walt Disney Company. The symbol is DIS on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). You can see by reviewing the trends and graphs how Disney’s stock has been trading historically from one day, five years, to the life of the stock (in

this case 1960). This page contains a lot of important information for you. You can even order the company’s annual report from this page. There are several topics on the left that you should view as well. News and Information – will give you headlines, current articles and press releases about the company. Company Profile – gives you a sum-mary and a list of the top key execu-tives. Sector – states the type of industry the company is in, number of fulltime employees and the competitors in similar industries. Financials – will allow you to look at income statements (showing revenues) over a three - year period. In addi-tion, balance sheets and cash flow statements are available for review. Researching public companies this way will help you answer questions such as: Is the company financially stable and profitable? Are they rebounding back or recovering from a recession? Are there new products or services about to be rolled out? Have they experi-enced layoffs or downsizings? Did the company outsource positions over-seas? Are they currently under inves-tigation? Has there been merger activ-

ity or talk of interested buyers. GOOGLE.COM

Now take a look at the company’s own website. You will find the web address through a Google search. Using our Disney example, the website is www.disney.go.com. Company websites will give you additional information into the company’s products, services and personality. You will find out about other job openings, a look into the company’s culture, and mission statement. There will be additional news articles and press releases. Company websites will usually show what outreach pro-grams or community service spon-sorships they promote and are involved in. Take the time to do your re-search. The Internet is a strong tool to help you gather informa-tion. Research will help you de-vise excellent questions to ask during your interview. Research will help you decide whether to pursue a job opening and help you conclude if the company is right for you.

Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society

On November 20, 2006, Keiser University faculty advi-sory Arin Miller faculty mem-ber Julia Chinnis as well as campus administrators in-ducted several West Palm Students in various majors into the local chapter of PTK. Friends and family were on hand to share the celebration. What is PTK?

Established by Missouri two-year university presidents in

1918, Phi Theta Kappa Inter-national Honor Society serves to recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year university students and provide opportunities for individual growth and develop-ment through honors, leader-ship and service programming. Today, Phi Theta Kappa is the largest honor society in American higher education

with more than 1.3 million members and 1,200 chapters located in 50 United States, U.S. terri-tories, Canada and Germany. In 1929, the American Asso-ciation of Community Univer-sities recognized Phi Theta Kappa as the official honor society for two-year universi-ties.
