Headmaster’s Update

Morocco Trip supporting charity Dame Hannah's

Staff and students from Kelly College have chosen Dame Hannah Rogers Trust as the charity for the spring holiday expedition to Morocco.

Congratulations are in order for raising over £700 so far through the sale of T Shirts.

Earlier in the term they visited Hannahs at Seale-Hayne to launch their project.

Mr Francis from Kelly College said “The pupils are undertaking an exciting eight day expedition to Morocco to live as a traditional desert nomad. We will explore the beautiful and remote Hamada Desert and journey through this landscape with the nomads using survival and navigational skills learnt from them. We chose Hannahs as our charity because it provides opportunities for children and young adults with disabilities to experience outdoor education”. Emily Severn, Hannahs Fundraising Manager, said “We are really grateful to the staff and students of Kelly College for choosing to support Hannahs and we wish them good luck on their big adventure”

In an attempt to avoid this introduction to The Kelleian becoming too formulaic I have consciously avoided any mention of the weather in the opening lines of the last few editions. This term I feel justified in reflecting upon a term in which never has our school and grounds taken such a beating from the elements. Staff and children alike have dealt with the extraordinary amount of rain and wind with great stoicism and fortitude but particular praise must go to Dean Elliott and his teams for caring for our buildings and grounds with such skill and minimising the damage that could have been caused.

Today the sun is out and the daffodils are looking spectacular and the changing season brings promise of good and happy times to come. The announcement of the intended merge between Kelly College and Mount House brings similar feelings of excitement and promise. Our Preparatory School children have returned from their first visits to the Mount House site this week brimming over with enthusiasm about new friends and new facilities.

There is much to be done over the coming months and as each

stage is confirmed and clarified the information will be shared with you all. The level of support from parents and staff has been both reassuring and inspiring and I am confident that The Mount Kelly Foundation will flourish and together we will be far greater than we could have ever been apart.

The joining of these two great schools brings terrific opportunities for the future; to build on everything that was excellent in each organisation and create an educational institution that will have academic strength, outstanding pastoral care and unrivalled co-curricular provision. The last word must go to the children and as always at this time of year we are supporting and following our Ten Tors Teams and our Devizes to Westminster Crews but above all our thoughts and encouragement go to all our pupils preparing for their public examinations next term. I know that they will take this opportunity to work hard and fully prepare themselves remembering that some time off to relax with family and friends is important too.

Wishing everyone a Happy EasterDr Hawley

Biology and Art trip to Plymouth Aquarium

1st form pupils had the exciting opportunity to visit the Plymouth National Marine Aquarium this term to provoke curiosity, to discover what lies under the sea and to be inspired by the hundreds of different species that the aquarium have on show.

Students were learning about the different reproductive systems of a variety fish, including sharks and octopus' to further their studies in biology and were sketching the fish exploring colour, texture and pattern for this terms ceramic Art project.

1st Form English class visit Prep School NurseryWigs, fairy costumes, maps and a mini bus ride around the local surroundings. It was time again for Mrs Bratt’s 1st form English class to begin their unit of work on children’s stories.

Having reflected on both their own childhoods and that of their parents’ with regard to books and stories we shared our favourites and our memories of being read to. We explored types of children’s books: picture books, educational, fairy stories etc and then focused on replicating ‘The Jolly Postman’ and turning it into the ‘Jolly Devon Postman’. In groups pupils wrote their stories, took photos or found pictures for the illustrations and bound the books ready for the final assessment – reading the work to the right audience: KCPS Nursery. All pupils worked tremendously hard, special mention must go to Ryan Gunther-Leece for his organisation of his group, George Bott with his local knowledge for settings and Issy Dunlop and Scarlett Harrison for their animated reading of their group’s story to the nursery pupils.

As part of the Young Enterprise scheme, Kelly College’s team Xcellerate have put together a fun filled educational children’s cook book.

Young Enterprise Unveil Cook BookEncourage your child into the world of cooking with easy-to-follow, colourful, illustrated step-by-step instructions on how to make mouth watering meals and tasty treats from around the world, whilst learning new and exciting facts about countries!

Boys 1st Team Hockey triumph 3- 0 versus Plymouth College

U13 Win Bronze in Devon Cup

The Kelly U13 Hockey team took part in the Devon Cup at Exeter University's water based astro turf this week and came away with bronze medals. The Kelly boys showed great strength and determination throughout the tournament only conceding 1 goal in all their matches but scoring a very impressive 17 against the likes of Exeter School, West Buckland and Mount House.

A squad of 13 boys travelled to represent Kelly College at the Rosslyn Park National 7s tournament in London. Kelly fared very well in a tough group. A narrow defeat to Canford, was followed up with an improved performance to beat St Peter’s Liverpool 28-17. Eventual group winners Uppingham were too strong to contain, which left a final game against Wycliffe College. The best performance of the day as the conditions worsened saw Kelly win 22-7 playing some expansive Sevens and being deservedly victorious. This left a final table position of third, which is a good result at a national level. Congratulations should go to all squad members for their efforts and performances on the day, as well as the preparations involved in their own free time. These results top off a successful Tens and Sevens season, and bodes well for the future of Kelly rugby.

We are hugely proud of Jack for this fantastic achievement and also look forward to his forthcoming trip to Zimbabwe at Easter. He will be attending a reception at the British Embassy in Harare and the British Council will be filming parts of the visit to promote cultural and sport-ing connections with Zimbabwe as well as the match being televised.

Jack Williams donned the pink shirt of the Independent Schools National XV last Sunday making his debut against The Old Boys Club Wales in a game that they won 21 - 18.

England Independent Schools Rugby

The U14 Netball team came 3rd in 'The Plymouth Schools Tournament'. The squad made up of Molly Scott, Alice Jones, Beth Bourne, Jess Peak, Sian Temple, Olivia Banks, Josie Francis, Vicky Moore and Abby Samp-son played seven matches in all winning four, drawing one and loosing only the the two top placed teams.

The game started well for the Plymouth College who maintained a lot of the possession during the opening periods of play, some fine defending from Guy Coulton and Danny Goldstone held the opposition at bay. Kelly made the most of Plymouths mistakes and capitalised through a well worked short corner routine which Matt Earp calmly slotted away. The second half saw Kelly play some finer hockey working the ball down the left hand side of the pitch with pace and accuracy.

Will Bennett demonstrated some fine composed hockey which left the

opposition chasing the game. Kelly soon increased their lead in the game with another clinical short corner routine which saw Matt Earp score his second of the game. The game was soon put to bed through a ruthless piece of attacking play which saw Josh Walker score his first goal of the season.

1st VII enjoyed a fantastic 29-23 win over Plymouth College.

The squad of eight players all worked tirelessly in all ares of the court scoring from our centre passes and picking up interceptions from Plymouth College to also convert their centre pass into goals for us. Rosannah Morel and Lauren Dawe put immense pressure on the Goal Attack and Goal Shooter in the defending circle whilst Georgia Donnelly, Amy Lloyd, Laura Nicholas , Megan Benton and Claudia Smith marked tightly in the centre court forcing Plymouth College to make several errors which Louisa Butcher ( player of the match) , Claudia Smith and Meg Benton converted in

Victory for 1st Rugby Squad in Kelly 10's

Plate Tectonics & Geohazards Conference at Plymouth UniversityProfessor Iain Stewart delivered an exceptionally interesting day outlining the geohazards associated with tectonic events. Experts from University of Exeter, Plymouth University and University College London presented fascinating case studies, often based on their first hand experience of these events and their aftermath.

An incredibly useful and inspiring day for our A Level Geographers.

Victoria Moore and Sian Temple in Dartington Duathlon

Victoria Moore, competing for Kelly College at the Dartington Duathlon on Sunday 23rd March, completed the sprint distance event in a time of just under 1 hr 26, coming 2nd in the female U18 category.

The race started with a 5 km run followed by a 10 km bike route before finishing off with a challenging 2.5 km cross-country run.

Sian Temple won the U18 female event, recording the fastest female time for both the 5k road run and the 2.5k cross-country, and having a brilliant cycle recording the 8th fastest female time. Although she won the U18's, she was 3rd overall for all the females, quite an achievement for her first attempt at such an event.

England Independent Schools Rugby

The Kelly College 1st rugby squad emerged victorious from the ten-a-side tournament known as Kelly 10's held at the school this term.

In our first fixture we were drawn against a well drilled Torquay Boys Gram-mar School side which proved a very even contest. Kelly scored two tries and defended resolutely to stop the opposition crossing the try line to run out deserved 12-0 victors.

West Buckland was next, in what turned out to be a very physical battle. Again, the Kelly team didn’t take a backward step in defence, attacked with good running lines and emerged with another 3 tries in a 19-0 win.

The performance of the day from the team came against Plymouth College. Kelly spent most of the first hand on the attack, offloading impressively and earning a 7-0 lead at half time. The second half was a very brave defensive effort, repelling phase after phase of Plymouth attacks. Plym-outh managed to score with the last play of the game, with the successful conversion with the final kick leaving the final score 7-7.

This sent the Kelly team into their last game against Shebbear knowing that a bonus point win would seal the title. In a shortened game, Kelly soon scored the five tries they needed for the extra point with the game finishing 29-0.

The league table finished with Kelly College in first place and champions of the Kelly Tens.

GO4SET Launch day at Plymouth Aquarium

Drama & Religious Studies PerformanceOn Wednesday 26th March, Mr Balfour took the Saturday morning Drama students to Mount House followed by Kelly College Prep School to perform a short play focusing on an Aboriginal Creation Myth.

The six students; Ellie Pile, Scarlett Harrison and Alex Hawkins from First Form, James Davies from Third Form and Dorothea Seyfarth and Isabella Piskernik from 5th and L6 respectively, had been working on the piece for several weeks. “We started off with the idea of looking at Creation from a different angle and the Aboriginal story just seemed to be perfect,” said James.

The show, which involved narration and storytelling techniques, was very well received by Years 3-6 at Mount House and everyone at KCPS and both performances drew a list of follow up questions from the audience. “This is the start of many more ‘outreach’ shows that we have the ability to produce at Kelly and our next ‘tour’ will incorporate several other local schools,” enthused Mr Balfour.

Plymouth University Robotics Lab

At the time of writing Kelly College Robotics Club are designing and building robots that can walk along a wall, another that will snap at you like a crocodile if you get too close, and a Martian Rover that can gather samples of martian soil and return them to the mother ship for analysis.

But what was seen when visiting the Robotics Labs at Plymouth University was truly awe inspiring and really impressive.

The club spent a very con-structive hour with the under-graduates at the university, who very kindly gave up their time between lectures, to teach some of the techniques and skills needed to com-plete the projects the club are working on at school. Along the way of course, as is the way when working with robots, enormous fun was had by all.

This year for the first time Kelly fielded two teams for this exciting STEM scheme, which takes place over ten weeks work-ing with Babcock Marine.

Our two teams chose different projects, team A to design an eco-friendly sports centre and team B an eco-classroom for their school.

The scheme will involve a site visit and the compilation of a report, giving a presentation and making a model.

This year’s launch took place at Plymouth Aquarium and a thoroughly fun and informative day was had by all.

Mrs Holwill led the trip and organised a tour of London, including walking past Parlia-ment, the London Eye and having lunch in Trafalgar square.

The main focus of the day was art and the group certainly packed it in visiting Tate Brit-ain, Tate Modern, The National and The National Portrait Gallery.
