Five Star First GradersHave you ever heard the story, Snow Dog, Go Dog? Well,

according to 1st grader, Gabbie Hull, you should! Gabbie highly recommends this book to her classmates giving it a rating of 5 out of 5 stars! Natileigh Merchant agrees this book is pretty good considering she gave it 4 out of 5 stars. However, she thinks her classmates would enjoy The Greatest Snowman in the World even more!

First graders are building their vocabulary, increasing their comprehension, and strengthening their critical listening skills by listening to quality literature on CD players purchased with funds from the Kelloggsville Education Foundation. Students have daily opportunities to listen, critique, review and recom-mend various kinds of stories to each other. Not only are they enjoying listening to different kind of books, but are becoming more fluent readers in the process!

Thanks to Kelloggsville Education Foundation for supporting literacy in the first grade classroom.

100 Days at EastRecently the students at East Kelloggsville celebrated the 100th

day of school! The day started off with an assembly where the students counted to 100 by 1’s, 5’s, and 10’s. Students also became more physically fit by doing 100 exercises. After the assembly, the students went back to their classrooms and continued the 100 day fun by doing activities related to the magical number of 100!

    SOUTHEAST ELEMENTARY

    Student Achievementat Southeast

A total of 168 fourth and fifth graders were presented a Certificate of Achievement at the February 9 Board of Education Meeting. These students showed a year’s growth in a half year’s time on either Reading or Math, or on BOTH Reading and Math on the MAP test (Measures of Academic Progress). All the students at Southeast take a computer test in Math and

Reading right away in September. After those tests are completed, the computer testing program gives each student a score to strive for to make a year’s growth by the end of the year. They take the same two tests again in January, and if they hit their target score at that time, we recognized them at a Board Meeting. Many, many parents came that evening to show their support to the school and their child. Congratulations to all the students, we are so very proud.

West Celebrates WritingMrs. Schmier’s second grade class had an author’s celebration on Fri-

day, January 23. Mrs. Schmier’s students had a chance to share their books with students from other classes as well as a few parents and staff.

    Healthy EducationLessons from the YMCA

Ms. Megan Hainer who was an educator at the YMCA, came to Southeast Elementary for six weeks to teach lessons on a weekly basis to five classes. Mrs. Hainer started each lesson by having the students move their bodies for at least five minutes. She taught the students about food groups, why they are important, and how food makes our body work. After instruction, she always had students complete a related activity and gave them a recipe to add to their student created recipe book! To close the session each week, the students were treated to a nutritious snack. This was a great opportunity and the students truly appreciated it and had fun learning about healthy choices. Mrs. Flak’s 4th grade class are shown doubling up their bands for greater resistance.

    Immigration Issues and Rights

100 DaysMrs. Wilhelm’s class is celebrating the 100th day of school by

working hard as a class to read 100 books in one day.

This month’s Coffee with Our Community featured Michael Gardiner, Grand Rapids lawyer. He spoke about immigration issues and rights. We thank him for coming to Southeast and sharing his expertise!

Career DayStudents at KMS participated in the annual Career Day in

partnership with Junior Achievement on January 22. Students rotated by grade levels to hear 5 different speakers talk about their careers and their life journeys. Speakers included a hair salon owner, a probation officer, a US boxing champion, the Mayor of Kentwood, a parks and rec department programmer, several local business people, and more. The speakers shared inspiring stories of overcoming hurdles in their own lives and also emphasized the importance of education, hard work, building relationships, and perseverance. We are grateful to the speakers who took time to come and share with our students!

Spelling BeeThe final school-wide spelling bee was held on January 8 with

fifteen students who qualified by winning their classroom and grade-level bees in December. The students spelled words and also had to know definitions for the vocabulary rounds. The two students who will represent KMS at the regional bee in February are sixth-grader Wendy Nguyen, who was the school champion, and seventh-grader India Cage, who was runner-up. Congratulations and best of luck at the regional bee!

Science ExplorationStudents and their families took part in hands on science activities at the Middle School’s Rocket Family Night held January 21. Everyone

had a fun and educational experience exploring a variety of science topics from all areas of science including Life Science, Energy, Chemistry, Physical Science and Engineering. Students were able to design loop planes and paper rockets, as well as make windmills and rainbow pies. There were stations set up to explore magnets, try snap circuit boards, make animal tracks in sand, and use microscopes.

ART: THE UNIvERSAL LANGUAGEThu Nguyen speaks Art! She came from Vietnam to better herself

and live with family. She came to the United States one year ago speaking very little English and wanting to embrace education. Her work ethic is impeccable and her English is improving with every experience!

We have many students like Thu who have come from foreign lands including Vietnam, Mexico, Burma, China, and Bosnia. Over 20 countries are represented here at Kelloggsville!

I have been honored to speak their language: ART! When teaching students Art, visual demonstrations, hands on participation, and opportunities to make connections to the arts and other academic subjects help students learn. Art fosters cross-cultural understanding and allows students the ability to express ideas in a safe environment where self-expression is encouraged!

Middle SchoolCongratulations to 7th Graders Arrenda Brigance, Emily Schwartz

and Kevin Ton and 8th Graders Olivia Moubray and Hannah Williams in being selected to the MSBOA District Ten Middle School Honors Bands. These students were selected to be a part of a group made up of the best players from different schools to have two rehearsals and then perform with guest conductors. It is a big honor and they represented Kelloggsville Middle School very well.

Chantal Lopez, Wesley Luna, Devon McAllister and Danira Stanojevic for earning a First Division Rating at the MSBOA District Solo and Ensemble and moving on to the State Level competition in March. START YOUR DAY RIGHT WITH BREAKFAST!! Mornings can be really crazy! The alarm

doesn’t go off, the kids don’t want to get up, there’s no time to eat breakfast before the bus comes or they’re just not ready to eat. Maybe your teenager grabs a can of soda and a candy bar on the way to school. If this sounds like your house, we have good news for you!!

Breakfast is available FREE at school!! For ALL students!! Take advantage of this option to ensure your child eats a nutritious breakfast. Recent studies show a link between nutrition and learning. A nutritious breakfast helps students be more alert so they can actively participate in class. Breakfast has vitamins and nutrients for a strong and healthy body.

So take advantage of this opportunity to start the day on the right foot. Encourage them to eat breakfast. Your child will find breakfast at school provides not only a nutritious meal but also a relaxed atmosphere for socializing with friends and siblings.
