Students watch lectures at home, (10 – 20 min) via computer, ipod, phone, DVD.

Watch, take notes, pause, rewind. “Homework” is done in class with me available to help. Your “Homework”.

What is flipping?

Page 6: Ken Richardson Wilson High School AP Chemistry Honors Chemistry Chemistry

I’m now a helper/consultant not the “sage on the stage” More time for group work/labs. I get to know students better. No more “ I understood it in class, but as soon as I got

home…..” Students overwhelmingly offer positive feedback.

Results – a paradigm shift

Page 7: Ken Richardson Wilson High School AP Chemistry Honors Chemistry Chemistry

Summer 2009 – attended a workshop by Bergmann and Sams.

2009/10 – made a lesson for a substitute, tried a couple more at the end of the school year.

10/11 – 4 podcasts for one unit in 2nd semester. Summer 2011 – Made podcasts for ¾ of the school

year. Finished the rest during the year. 11/12 – Completely flipped the classroom. Summer 2012 – Made podcasts for AP Chemistry 12/13 – Flipped AP Chemistry. Hey! Any supporting DATA?

There was not a significant change in failure rate. Took me a while to get down the production process. This requires a significant amount of time outside of

school. Software and equipment are also needed. $$ Technology hurdles. Painful at times! This process is not a cure-all. The pedagogy is the

most important piece. Technology is second.

It’s not all roses…

30 pt. font Background that’s not busy or dark. Be careful with pictures – if image has a tag,

you need permission. Make your podcast interesting and alive.

(pictures, animated GIF’s, your drawings) We are entertaining them!

Some Flippers use webcam and insert the images in the podcast.

Podcast Power Point - Tips

Page 12: Ken Richardson Wilson High School AP Chemistry Honors Chemistry Chemistry

Hook up tablet and mic. Use tablet to navigate. Open Power Point Document. (Use the Camtasia

tool bar if you want ). Choose Ink Tools tab. Start Camtasia. Choose Record the screen. (I don’t use the PP

option) Size the screen to fit the slide. (may have to

unlink the dimensions) Choose the mic. Test it. Turn on Webcam if you want it.

Making Podcasts

Page 13: Ken Richardson Wilson High School AP Chemistry Honors Chemistry Chemistry

Move recording box to top of screen. Click Record – Lets do this! Talk and write for about 15 seconds – click

stop. Playback to see if levels are ok. Delete will allow you to start over without

watching. Pause will halt the recording and Resume will restart it seamlessly.

Making Podcasts

Page 14: Ken Richardson Wilson High School AP Chemistry Honors Chemistry Chemistry

Hit Stop when you are finished. Save the camrec. file Size prompt should be 640 width x 464 height,

click ok. (this is the default setting) Now we can edit!

Saving Your Masterpiece

Page 15: Ken Richardson Wilson High School AP Chemistry Honors Chemistry Chemistry

There is so much you can do. Check your volume. Look for spikes. Edit or add your zoom keyframes – Remove

all zoom keyframes from edit menu or Zoom-n-Pan tab.

Fix mistakes with call-outs and the slider. Call-out Example Make a title clip Example

Editing

Page 16: Ken Richardson Wilson High School AP Chemistry Honors Chemistry Chemistry

When finished editing, click the Produce and Share tab.

Use default settings. Click Next. Check name and destination for your production.

Click Finish. To share we need to have a place to upload to.

You guys are fantastic and very understanding! Using PowerPoint is not the most tablet-friendly

program. Notebook and OneNote work well. Macs are different than PC’s. Camtasia may work well on your computer. You can use Notebook for recording if you get an

audio upgrade. Struggling with technology is a valid way to

learn.

What did we learn yesterday

Software – Camtasia $99 - 300, free source available.

Microphone - $20-150, Bluetooth Headset, iPhone headphones

Tablet - $40-200, Smartboard? Alternative – document camera and paper.

Check off notes next day. Provide a note guide with blanks. Podcast note quiz. Discussion question via school website or

Google docs. Start up questions from podcast to start next

lesson. Find out what works for you.

Procedures for students watching videos

Don’t Forget to check your volume. Check the zoom-ins, (I delete them, students

didn’t like them.) Have your dialog scripted.*No rambling, stay

on task, don’t waste students time. Do not read your slides, animate your voice! Keep them brief and to the point. Don’t forget to watch and edit.

Important points to making podcasts

SCRIPT: Mac TextEdit and Calculator

Please read through the entire script to familiarize yourself with the actions you’ll be completing during this activity. Also, before you begin recording, open TextEdit and the Calculator, and resize/reposition them to be side-by-side on your screen. **TextEdit on left, Calculator on right.

Step Action on Screen Narration 1 Built in narration to be cut out later

during editing… Hello and welcome to this video tutorial on how to use the Macintosh calculator.

2 Optional: insert a title slide during this audio, and then transition to

recording

I’m going to show you how to copy calculations made on the Mac calculator and paste the results into a TextEdit document.

3 An opportunity to use Annotations to point to different parts of the

screen

As you can see, TextEdit is opened on the left side of my screen, and the calculator is here on the right.

4 Zoom in on the Calculator

For this demonstration, let’s just perform a simple subtraction problem.

5 Silence the “Ummm” during editing…

Ummm…Enter the current year, and then subtract the year you were born…and click equals.

6 Built in narration to be cut out later during editing…

Spend a few moments in disbelief that you really are this old…then just smile and accept it.
