Traveling Education Suitcase Kits

The following kits are available for a 2-3 week check-out to educators. For more information or to check out a kit contact Education Specialist, Michelle Ostrowski at (907) 260-2839.

This kit contains 32 magnifying loupes, The Private Eye book including suggested activities and directions, The World in a Box kit to prepare your own materials for class viewing, a short video illustrating how to use the loupes and the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge Private Eye Activity Workbook as an example of how to use this kit with your class.

Loupes Kit

This kit is filled with eleven museum quality skulls of selected Alaskan animals. Some non-Alaskan animals have been included for comparison studies. Three books have been provided for reference and contain helpful graphics for identification and other activities. The skulls included are: hare, river otter, red fox, beaver, woodchuck, wolverine, lynx, short tailed weasel (ermine), coyote, wolf, and black bear.

Skulls Kit

The puppets kit includes all you need for creative wildlife activities with your class. Twelve books about specific Alaskan animals and eighteen stuffed animals or puppets of squirrel, black bear, beaver, bald eagle, porcupine, mountain goat, coyote, ermine, moose, snowshoe hare, river otter, sea otter, brown bear, gray wolf, red fox, lynx, sockeye salmon and caribou are ready for story time, hands-on introductions to animals or other activities especially designed for younger children. Animal BINGO and MEMORY games also included.

This kit contains track identification guides and rubber molds to make plaster casts of eighteen Alaskan animals. The tracks included are: immature and adult black bear, porcupine, weasel, coyote, red fox, snowshoe hare, wolf, caribou, sea otter, adult moose, wolverine, mouse, beaver, duck, goose, blue jay, woodpecker, and crow. All that is needed is the plaster of paris to make this kit into an exciting arts and crafts science activity.

Tricky Tracks Kit

Great to use with the Tricky Tracks kit, this kit contains track and scat guides, wildlife identification books, recommended activities, examples of student projects, replicas of Alaskan animals’ tracks, scat and claws and Alaskan animal rubbing plates. The animals included are: moose, caribou, mountain goat, wolverine, beaver, coyote, snowshoe hare, wolf, shrew, marmot, marten, porcupine, lynx, red squirrel, red fox, river otter, bobcat, weasel/ermine, black bear, brown bear and polar bear.

Animal Signatures Kit

The Junior Duck stamp kit is available for a two-week check out, to allow for maximum classroom use before the submission deadline (entries must be postmarked by March 15th each year). Directions for the competition, examples of Dos and Don’ts, colored pencils, practice and submission paper, and bird identification guides are all included in this kit.

Role of Fire in Alaska kit is filled with hands on, interactive, lab materials, posters, and videos, designed to help young people learn about fire ecology, fire behavior, and about living safely along the wildland urban interface. The lessons, which use role playing, games, and laboratory and computer simulations, can be taught individually or combined into units. This kit is ONLY available to people who have taken the Role of Fire in Alaska Workshop.
