Tena koutou katoa Parent voting for our triennial Board of Trustees elections closes tomorrow. So far we have only received about 5% of the eligible parent vote. We have a great school that runs well and provides a fantastic education for your children. We are one of 12% of New Zealand schools to have a four-to-five year Education Review Office Review Cycle. This does not occur by accident. The Board of Trustees that you vote for oversees Kenakena School’s strategic direction and policy development. Board Members are the trustees for the education and well-being of your children while they are students at our school. Our Board is also the employer of the staff that teaches and looks after your children; our kaiako and kaitiaki. So, it’s important for you to have a say on the people with whom you are placing this trust. Candidate statements have been sent out to you all, along with the voting papers, which must be returned to Kenakena School by mid-day tomorrow. LEARNING ABOUT CHINA Our tamariki in the Koromiko (Years 3-4) Team have been studying China, choosing areas of interest to research and present to their peers. I visited Mrs Cathie Conner’s class in Room 18 this week to see Briana (Native Animals) and Jaco’s (Great Wall of China) presentations. One of the learning focuses was on the skills of presentation and it was great to see the kids giving each other structured feedback on their presentation-specific goals.

KENAKENA SCHOOL CROSS-COUNTRY RACES Our annual School Cross-Country Day takes place next Thursday, June 9 at Te Atiawa Park. You will already have received information on this regarding sponsorship and the Colour Run, which happens after the formal races. There is information below on the organisation for the day, including timeframes. Your children have been practicing for this event for the past few weeks. They know that not all will make the ‘top ten’ and that there can be only one winner. However, we have been encouraging them to do their best; the race within a race, where children try to catch the runner in front of them and set their own goals. Please encourage them in their training and to try their best in the event. WELCOMING A NEW STAFF MEMBER Mrs Telane Westray will begin teaching a new Year 1 Class in Room 7 from next Tuesday through till the end of this year. The class has been established to cater for the very high numbers of five-year old students coming to Kenakena this year. Telane has taught a wide range of age levels in South Africa and New Zealand, recently working for the Kidicorp ABC group in Kapiti, preparing children to come to school. STAYING SAFE ONLINE

Concern about keeping young people safe online is growing in our community and in communities across New Zealand. Schools, parents and community organisations need to be mindful about children and teenagers’ online safety and ensure education about the risks and management of those risks is put in place. As the principal of your children’s school I am concerned about the increasing incidence of negative and damaging online activity outside of school, particularly through the use of social media. It is mainly an issue for our older students, where the negative effects of inappropriate out-of-school social media activity is having an impact in school. We need you to be vigilant with regard to your children’s online activity. Advice for parents through Netsafe New Zealand can be accessed at https://www.netsafe.org.nz/advice/parenting/ . A worthwhile thing to do as parents would be to view these pages with your children and discuss some of the issues raised. POLICE TICKETING DANGEROUS PARKING Kapiti Police have begun issuing tickets to drivers who park their cars illegally on Donovan Road and Arnold Grove. There are designated ‘No Parking’ yellow lines and a sign-posted clearway (Arnold Grove). Keeping our kids safe should be the main motivation for observing these. Candidate Statement – Michelle Mason

I have served on the Kenakena Board of Trustees for the

last three years. My role has been to oversee legislative

and policy changes that impact on our school and

students, and to ensure that our policies and procedures

comply with all relevant legislation. I have enjoyed the last

three years and would like to continue with the good work

the outgoing Board has undertaken.

I have two sons, aged nine and seven years, both at Kenakena School. My husband is a

lawyer who works in Wellington.

While I am currently a fulltime mum, I am a qualified barrister and solicitor. I graduated with

an LLB (Hons) in 1995 and then worked as a family lawyer also doing some criminal and

civil law work. In 1999 I moved to work at Inland Revenue, which obviously predominantly

involved taxation law but also included work in the area of child support.

In my spare time, I enjoy making imaginative children’s birthday cakes, walking, reading

and I am keen to increase my photography skills this year. I am involved in an informal

support group for parents with children on the autism spectrum and have done numerous

courses to increase my understanding of children on the spectrum and what we can do to

assist them in their everyday life.

I am also part of the school Friday Lunches team and the Festival of Fun organising

committee. I believe that it is important for parents to be involved in their children’s

education and for our children to see that we are interested in the issues that impact on

their lives.

Candidate Statement – Debbie Livingstone

I have been a Board of Trustee member for the last three years

and have been actively involved in the upgrade of the swimming

pool facilities and all other property projects throughout the

school. I would like to carry on as a Board member to see

through some property projects that are in the planning stage

through to completion. I also enjoy helping and supporting

Kenakena School to be the exciting, motivating and most positive

School on the Kapiti Coast.

I am a mother of four boys; three of the boys are at Kenakena

School.

Currently I am a relief teacher at Early Childhood Centres, I also

do all Administration and Accounts for Kapiti Power Tools Limited.

Since my eldest son started school I have always volunteered whenever I could to assist

with school fundraising, helping in the classroom and providing transport for various school

outings.

I run Swim Kenakena at the school pool to offer affordable swimming lessons to children;

my aim is to have all children at Kenakena School confident swimmers.

My wife, Barbara and I have been living in the Paraparaumu area now

for more than 11 years. We have one child, Piripi who is in year 6 at

Kenakena School. I have been a school trustee at Kenakena School for

the last three years as well as providing volunteer support in projects like

Matariki activities, class trips and sports coach.

As a parent and school trustee, I have pleasantly observed the strong

learning environment and community support displayed at Kenakena

School. This can be attributed to the concerted efforts undertaken by

school staff under the strong leadership of Bruce McDonald and supportive direction of the

School Board of Trustees.

I hope to be re-elected as a Trustee, so this standard will continue with the School Board

making sound decisions, clear guidelines and progressive initiatives that will be of benefit to

our children, school staff and community.

Hello my name is Belinda Wilson and I am a 36 year old

fully qualified Chartered Accountant.

I have been working in Chartered Accounting for the

past 17 years, starting out in Thames and then moving

to Auckland.

I work for a medium sized Chartered Accounting firm in

Auckland that specialises in business development as

much as traditional accounting. I work remotely from

home full time and travel back to Auckland and around

the country for work on a monthly basis.

I deal with a range of businesses comprising small to

medium sized business including a number of well know

established New Zealand companies

If elected as a trustee, I will bring a finance and business focus as well as being a mother

who is invested in the future of her two boys and the futures of the students they will go to

school with.

Candidate Statement Louisa Rodani

I was excited to hear about the opportunity to apply for a position on the Kenakena School Board; as we have recently moved to Paraparaumu, and we are passionate about supporting this great school and our new community – we immediately felt at home here and know this is where we are meant to stay! The search for a new school is a tough one, but from my very first encounter with the school website, I sensed something different about Kenakena, and was inspired by all the great people and initiatives that I saw.

That impression was reinforced by our first visit to the school, and from meeting the staff and pupils here; we were convinced it was truly an exciting, motivating and positive place!

A bit about me – I grew up in Wellington and started out my career in the animated film industry, then spent 10 years overseas in England, France, Brazil and Iran amongst other countries, where I taught English as a Second Language (learnt a few languages myself) and worked in the International Education sector. Realizing that New Zealand was the best country in the world to bring up kids, I returned here and worked in Recruitment and Human Resources at the Ministry of Education, and am now a Consultant to the

Government sector. Having recently completed my MBA at Victoria University, I am keen to put my broad business experience and knowledge of Governance to good use.

I would see it as a privilege to serve on the Board of Kenakena School; and offer a

genuine, values driven and strategic approach.

Kia ora. I am Paul Fallon, father to Kea Fallon in year four and Anika Fallon who is about to join year one from late July this year. I live just around the corner from Kenakena School on Martin Road. My Whanau have lived in various places in NZ and abroad and whilst we have lived in Kapiti for only a few short years, we are proud to consider this place our home. My day job is as Chief Information and Technology Officer for an organisation supporting two local Polytechnics in the Wellington region - Whitireia Community Polytechnic and WelTec institute of Technology. The means I spend my professional life working with

Technology and strategy within tertiary education, I love being around education and being able to relate my work to student outcomes. Why am I applying to be on the Board of Trustees for KenaKena? I care about Kenakena School and I wish to give back to the community in which I live and do my bit to help the young minds of Paraparaumu prosper. I bring with me knowledge of reporting to boards, Strategy, ICT, contracting, finances and an enthusiasm to learn and grow personally. Regards Paul.

The Kenakena School Cross Country will be held on Thursday 9th June starting at - 12.30pm for the junior school 1.00pm for the senior school Year 3-8 children will race in their year groups, girls then boys.

From year 4 up the first 10 children will get their names recorded and will go to the Kāpiti

Primary Inter Schools Cross-Country at Waikanae Park Tuesday 21st June. Children are to bring a drink bottle, warm clothing and a rainproof jacket in case of showers.

For safety reasons - shoes to be worn please.

Thanks so much to the families that put their creative efforts into producing a poster

to represent the Tiaki Values we are focusing on at Kenakena School. They were

fantastic! After much deliberation the winning poster was chosen. Congratulations to

Renee Cameron-Bennett. Renee is an ex-pupil at Kenakena who is currently in year

13 at Paraparaumu College. Renee was one of the students that worked on our

fabulous Kahe Te Rau o te Rangi mural outside Room 12 when she was a student

here.

A special mention needs to go to Lisa Willetts who also produced two wonderful

posters.

ROOM 20’s VIRTUAL TRIP TO THE OPERA - a report by Zara Feaunati

This year room 20 have taken part in the Learnz virtual trip to the Magic Flute Opera. The man that runs this is Andrew. This opera performance is very entertaining, I went to the dress rehearsal myself and it was amazing. The thing I enjoyed most about the opera was how incredibly they could sing louder then the orchestra.

Also taking part in the virtual trip is Room 20’s ambassador which is Gooby Jr. In fact Gooby Jr is one of my own toys and it is a tiny tortoise. Andrew said it was the smallest ambassador he had ever had! Being an ambassador means you go to watch the show and see all the props, setting up the stage and watching the cast get ready.

The performance is set out really neat. The props are really creative and show lots of detail. The magic flute is humorous, entertaining, romantic and very beautiful. The story shows the Queen of the night needing the prince (Tamino) to save her daughter (Pamina) and he will be rewarded as becoming husband and wife with her daughter if he saves her.

Another thing you can do in the trip is an audio conference, so room 20 took part in that too. What happens is you have 10 questions and 10 speakers and your questions have to be open questions. So the speakers in room 20 were Catherine Lagarde, Hayley Milne, Willow Bardsley, Isaac Nyan, Bradley Hare-bint, Logan Phillips, Cassie Shaw, Annabelle Sutherland, Zara Feaunati and Dominic Sheerin. The experts we were speaking to were Coleta Carbonell (she does the wigs, makeup and designs), and the other expert we spoke to was Steve Crowcroft, he is the technical manager so he controls the props and the wigs. The audio conference speakers did a really good job and it went really well.

In my own opinion I think overall the show is awesome is was my first opera I’d been to and their voices were incredible. My favourite scene was with Papagena and Papageno because we did some research on Madison Nonoa (Papagena) and I really enjoyed listening to her! If you have the chance to see the show then I recommend to see it because it is wonderful!

Coastlines look after NZ’s coastlines and

waterways.

After $2.5 million donated to the Starship Foundation from the

sale of unwanted old mobile phones it is time for a new multi

award winning NZ charity - Sustainable Coastline to benefit

from this scheme.

It would be great if you could rummage around in your drawers

and toy boxes and bring into School any unwanted mobile

phones you may have.

Phones collected help our School gain valuable rewards and also the environment benefits

by keeping our landfills free of mobile phones and their array of hazardous toxic

substances.

Please drop any unwanted mobile phones you may have in the collection box in the

reception area at School.
