Look for an official announcement soon, but the
Aviation Update can share that Delta will start
service from Seoul Incheon (ICN) to Manila (MNL) in
March 2020. On the next page we will detail several
changes to Delta’s U.S. – Tokyo operations that are
coming up.

TSA found 90 guns in carry-on
bags for the week ending July 21. 17 TSA has now found 2,370 guns
in carry-on bags for the year so
far. Click here to see an airport by
airport count of guns found in 2019 – the only such
list that is maintained anywhere on the internet.
A former baggage handler at Portland, Oregon
(PDX) received a six-month bid in federal prison
after he was convicted of stealing six firearms from
checked bags.
125 kilograms of rhinoceros horns were found
hidden in plaster at Hanoi (HAN) on July 28, after
smugglers attempted to bring it into Vietnam where
one kilogram of rhinoceros horn can be worth up to
$60,000. On the same day, Vietnamese authorities
arrested three men after seven frozen tiger
carcasses were found in their vehicle. 18
Three men have been arrested by Brazilian police,
including an airport cargo supervisor, after 718
kilograms of gold were stolen from Rio de Janeiro
(GIG) on July 25. The cargo employee originally told
police that he and his family and been kidnapped
and forced to cooperate; police now believe he was
involved in the theft. The gold, worth $30 million,
has yet to be recovered. 19 Video of the heist, via a
surveillance camera at the cargo warehouse, is now
available. The thieves used cloned Brazilian Federal
Police vehicles during the job. Avid readers of this
publication, both of you, will recall that cloned
AeroMexico (ASMF) vehicles were used in an April 3
robbery at Leon (BJC) which netted $2.4 million for
the pilferers; this was detailed in Aviation Update
167.
A Delta Air Lines pilot was arrested at Minneapolis
(MSP) on August 30 after he was found to have

alcohol on him and was suspected of being drunk.
No formal charges have yet been filed pending the
results of a toxicology test. 20
Air France (CNFF) flew 4.785 million
passengers in June and achieved an
89.4 percent system-wide load
factor.
Air France announced a firm order for 60 Airbus
A220-300 aircraft, with options for a total of 60
further frames. The A220-300 will replace Air
France’s 18 A318 and 33 A319 aircraft. Delivery
dates or terms of the purchase were not disclosed.21
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (KRDF)
flew 3.130 million passengers in
June, a 4.7 percent year-on-year
(yoy) increase. System-wide load
factor for the month was 91.7 percent.
KLM has placed an order for 15 Embraer E195-E2
aircraft, with options for 20 further frames, in a deal
worth $2.48 billion at list prices. These aircraft will
be used for the KLM Cityhoppeer regional
operation. The E2 generation of Embraer E195s will
use 30 percent less fuel than the first generation.
Deliveries will begin in 2021. 22
Holland’s Transavia flew 1.743
million June passengers, a nine
percent yoy increase, as the
carrier reached a 93.6 percent
load factor. 23
United Airlines (CALA) has
partnered with CLEAR to offer
free or reduced price
membership for its Mileage Plus
members. If you are wondering what CLEAR is, we
have a blurb later that discusses it. 24
United has instructed its ticketing agents to inform
corporate security if and when they come across
passengers who are using “hidden-city ticketing.” 25
Aviation Update 152 reported that United was
having its lawyers send threatening letters to
passengers who had used the “hidden-city” trick to
save money. You may be forgiven if you are
wondering how a handful of passengers using this
age-old trick are hurting a company that earned
$1.1 billion in net income in the second quarter of
the year. (Hidden-city ticketing is when you wish to
fly from City A to City B, but the ticket is too pricey.
You then find a cheaper ticket from City A to City C,
with a connection in City B, where you get off the
plane and skip the flight to City C.)
Flightradar24 tracked over 230,000 commercial
airlines flights on July 25, the busiest day ever
recorded by the air traffic tracking site.
Emirates (ZCQF) began the world’s
shortest Airbus A380 route last
month, with the Dubai (DXB) based
carrier operating the 211 mile
rotation 2x daily to Muscat, Oman (MCT). The flight
typically lasts about 45-minutes; up to 519
passengers can fly on the double-decker. 26
The top 10 airlines in the world by ancillary
revenue earned $35.2 billion in 2018, with
baggage fees, ticket changes, WiFi and so on
adding up to real money. So, which airlines made
bank?

Mainline U.S. carriers have equipped 85 percent of
their fleets with mandatory Automatic Dependent
Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) Out equipment,
while regional carriers have fitted 78 percent of
their aircraft. All aircraft in the U.S. must have ADS-

reported a commercial aircraft backlog of over
5,500 aircraft worth $390 billion as of June 30. 61
Finally, Embraer announced that it delivered 26
commercial aircraft during the second quarter of
2019. The Brazilian manufacturer has a backlog of
363 commercial aircraft worth $16.9 billion. 62
177 flights have been canceled at London Heathrow
tomorrow and Tuesday as around 2,500 engineers,
firefighters and security staff will strke. Employees
are seeking higher pay. 63

The Lufthansa Group lost $132
million in the first six months of
2019, with the blame going to
higher fuel costs and increased
competition. 65
Japan Airlines (JACF) earned a $110
million profit for the quarter ending
June 30. 66
The American Airlines Group earned a net profit of
$662 million in the second quarter of 2019.
American flew a total of 55.464 million passengers
(40 million mainline and 15.457 million regional) in
the quarter. Also of note, American paid $334
million in aircraft leases for the quarter, and another
$487 million on fuel. System-wide load factor for
both mainline and regional flights for the quarter
was 86.6 percent. Mainline flights had an average
stage length of 1,219 miles. Finally, American
currently has 24 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft that are
grounded.67
Air Canada (ARNF) earned $261.24
million in net income for the
second quarter. 12.837 million
passengers flew during the
quarter, with the carrier hitting an 84.1 percent
system-wide load factor. Air Canada’s 400 aircraft
flew an average of 10.7 hours per day, with each
flight averaging 1,749 miles. 68
Allegiant (WX0A) earned $70.5
million in net income in the second
quarter of 2019. The Las Vegas
carrier also reproted that
cancelations due to maintenance issues were down
87.6 percent versus the second quarter of 2018. 69
The Alaska Air Group, which
operates Alaska Airlines (ASAA)
and Horizon Air (QXEA), earned a
$262 profit in the second quarter
of the year. Mainline flights accounted for 9.206
million passengers and an 86.7 percent load factor
during the quarter. Horizon Air added another 2.82
million passengers during the period. During the
quarter Alaska fininshed repainting its fleet of
Airbus aircraft taken on during the merger with
Virgin America. 70
Alaska Airlines Airbus A320, formerly with Virgin America.
Delta Air Lines stopped handling cargo at Houston
Hobby (HOU) in June.
Charlotte (CLT) saw 15,653 tons of June cargo, a
10.1 percent yoy decline. London Heathrow (LHR)
moved 130,858 tons of cargo in June. The 174,392
tons of June cargo at Frankfurt (FRA) represented a
4.7 percent yoy drop. 71
What’s the difference between CLEAR and TSA
Pre-Check? First of all, these are two separate
and non-competing programs… in fact, they are
rather complimentary of each other. CLEAR
members have their fingerprints or iris’ scanned
to verify their identity and then jump into an
alternate screening lane, or, if the passenger has
TSA Pre-Check, to the front of the Pre-Check
lane, for screening. Pre-Check allows passengers
to keep their shoes on, laptops in the bag and
such when they are screened, while CLEAR lets
those passengers essentially jump to the front of
the line at the checkpoint. So if you are
comfortable sharing your biometric details with
a private company and paying $179 a year to skip
any lines for screening at 24 airports, CLEAR may
be for you.

The previous issue of the Aviation
Update mentioned that U.S. Air
Force, Navy, or Marine Corps
officers could earn astronaut
wings after completing a flight at
264,000 feet. It was pointed out that we forgot to
mention the Army’s astronauts as well – of which
there have been 17.
Ohio was the last state in the U.S. to still use steel
license plates, holding out until 2015 when the state
shifted, like all others, to aluminum, which does not
rust. 36 states require both front and rear license
plates.
