Ken’s Ride A bike ride of over 4,000 miles to help change the world...needs your help! An remarkable bike ride across the United States for a great cause. It is that time of year when budgets are being planned for next year and the year after. With that in mind I am asking you to support the Charcot- Marie-Tooth Association’s (CMTA) STAR research initiative. The Charcot- Marie-Tooth Association is a 501(c) (3) Corporation. I am writing to ask your company to support this effort by making a donation to CMTA. You can go to the e-secure website www.cmtausa.org/kensride . I am also pleased to inform you there is still $9,000 in matching funds available from the Paul Flynn Charitable Trust. Paul was a second cousin to Ken and a former Executive Director of the CMTA. As an avid bicyclist of 20 years I have done many week-long tours and am confident in my abilities to complete this adventure. Through your generous support for “kensride” you will enable the CMTA to continue funding important research. Thank you for your consideration. Ken Gomez with his son, Paul.

A bike ride of over 4,000 miles to help change the world...needs your help!

An remarkable bike ride across the United States for a great cause. It is that time of year when budgets are being planned for next year and the year after. With that in mind I am asking you to support the Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association’s (CMTA) STAR research initiative. The Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association is a 501(c) (3) Corporation. (Letter attached).

I am going to bicycle 4200 miles across the country in an effort to

create awareness about CMT and to raise funds for the CMTA's STAR research initiative. I am writing to ask your company to support this effort by making a donation to CMTA. You can go to the e-secure website www.cmtausa.org/kensride.

About CMTA:For 25 years, the vision of the CMTA has been a world without CMT. Now the vision has the potential to become a reality as the Strategy to Accelerate Research (STAR) moves research to a new level at an increased speed. The goals of the STAR initiative are ambitious: They expect to develop therapies for the three most prevalent types of CMT (I have one of them) within the next five years and to be able to reverse symptoms in some patients within ten years.

Attaining them will take an extraordinary commitment from the scientists and everyone who supports the work of the CMTA.

Charcot-Marie-Tooth, or CMT, is the most commonly inherited neurological disorder and is found world-wide in all races and ethnic groups. Discovered in 1886 by three physicians, Jean-Martin-Charcot, Pierre Marie, and Howard Henry Tooth, CMT affects an estimated 2.6 million people.

CMT patients slowly lose normal use of their feet/legs and hands/arms as nerves to the extremities degenerate and the muscles in the extremities become weakened because of the loss of stimulation by the affected nerves. Many patients also have some loss of sensory nerve function.

CMT is one of the 40 diseases covered by the MDA, but unlike muscular dystrophy, in which the defect is in the muscles, CMT is a disorder in which the defect is in the nerves that control the muscles.

If you would like more information on Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease or CMTA just go to www.cmtausa.org.

From Ken...“I will be using a mix of Adventure Cycling and State Bicycle Maps. My route is not strictly the Northern Tier. My planned route will be using the Northern Tier Route to Cut Bank MT then my own route south to Yellowstone for a couple of days then east to Gillette, WY to see Devil's Tower, then on to Crazy Horse, SD and on to Mt. Rushmore. East to Pierre, SD then following the Lewis and Clark trail to Council Bluffs, IA. From there I will take the Trans-America route to Murphysboro, KY.

Then follow the Underground Railroad route to Milford, OH and on to Erie PA. From there I will make my way north to Orchard Park, NY and pick up the Northern Tier Route (with some minor deviations near home) through NY, VT, and NH and on to Bar Harbor, ME.

My cross country trip has been in the planning stages for years. I have planned it around places and things I want to do and see. My golden rule on my mini tours is to be flexible - that way it is easier to take things as they come, be it rainy days, hills, or someplace I want to linger. I already do all of my own bike maintenance (more money for those evening beers on my trips.)

I plan on mostly camping, and a mix of cooking and eating out.

Besides doing something I have wanted to do since childhood, I am riding to in an effort to create awareness about Charcot-Marie Tooth disease (CMT) and to raise funds for the CMTA's STAR research initiative.”
