Breakthrough Kent Denver
Inspiring Today’s Students and Tomorrow’s Teachers
ANNUAL REPORT2017-2018
OUR MISSION
To increase the educational and social opportunities of motivated, financially under-resourced, middle and high school students through a quality year-round program.
To motivate and train talented college students for careers in education.
2
48 days of additional academic instruction
173 middle school students and185 high school students served from over
70 Denver Public Schools (DPS) and Englewood Public Schools (EPS)
Breakthrough is the only program in Denver to have 100% of students graduate high school for the past seven years
Marks 24 years of closing the achievement gap in Denver Public Schools and Englewood Public Schools
“Before coming here, I had a hard time dealing with other students who would provoke me or try to bully me. Breakthrough gave me tools to control my anger and to think of other ways to deal with other students. By taking deep breaths or simply walking away, I stopped making situations worse, and started being more positive. This isn’t just an academic program that helps us get better in school, Breakthrough has actually changed who I am.”
- Levi Lee, 8th grade, Morey Middle School
Breakthrough’s Impact in 2017-2018:
100% of Breakthrough high school seniors graduated in 2018
92% of Breakthrough graduates matriculated into an institution of higher education
Breakthrough Kent Denver is a six-year after school and summer program that supports middle and high school students
through challenges and transitions while simultaneously training aspiring educators.
All programs and services are provided at no cost to all of our students.

“Saturday School is so rewarding because we, the high school students, become the main
teachers. The most rewarding moments happen when a student isn’t getting a concept and you personally teach it to them in a way that they understand it. Watching them have that ‘breakthrough’ is what makes this program is so incredible.”
- Claudia Bautista Senior, Kent Denver School

“Breakthrough prepared me to teach from the first day we arrived on campus. The training period before the summer program provided us with a strong curriculum, classroom management skills and instructional support. My biggest takeaway, however, was a constant reminder to provide students with a clear objective for each lesson. This gave the students a purpose for each day,
and it helped me focus on individual classroom goals. Breakthrough helped me grow so much this summer, both as an educator and as a person.”
-Barbara Bravo-GonzalezBreakthrough Teaching Fellow, 2018
