Digital Media Definition-Digital Media is computerized graphics that are integrated to suits a client or users need. The digital image is displayed via a monitor ( plasma, LCD, etc ). These images are made up of pixels which represent tiny dots within the monitor. Digital Media can consist of : Music, Images, Web pages, Animation, Video, etc.

An Example of Digital Media :

- An image made in 3d Studio Max

- An image made in Adobe Photoshop

E-Music- E-Music is the abbreviated form for : Electronic Music. This process is when music that is composed by Bands/Music Artists and is stored onto the computers Hard-drive. This data can be downloaded from the internet. Programs, such as: WinMx, Kazzaa, DC++, emusic.com and others are programs which allow you access to these music. The file extension can consist of : .mp3 , .wav , .wma and .mid.

Examples of E-Music :

- Terminator 2 Theme (.mp3)

- Linkin Park : Session (.wma)

GamesDigital media plays an important role in today’s computer games.10 yrs ago, graphics hadn’t played any significant role in the gamesthat people had used to play. Now, advancing graphics with 3d effectsNow catch a gamers attention. Along with a good story line, graphicsAre essentially needed in today’s computer games.

DTPDTP is an abbreviated form for ‘ DIGITAL MEDIA TECHNOLOGY PRODUCTION ‘. This phrase means the images and/or the music filesthat are created or edited on the computer. Many movies and musicclips use DTP. The most common DTP program is Adobe Photoshopwhich is known nearly everywhere.

Page 9: Kent & Patrick DIGITAL MEDIA. DIGITAL MEDIA PRODUCTS

AUDIOAudio sound files that are edited on the computer, are mainly technotype music. This genre of music is also known as Trance. However, sound from movies such as The Matrix can be recorded onto the computer and the re-edited using special programs.

VideoVideo files can be recorded by a Digital Camera or other hardwarewhich can be then transferred onto the computer in where it can be edited. The main uses for video editing is for either MTV shows,TV shows or movies. The extension name for these files can vary from : .wmv, .avi, .mpeg and many more.

Cropping- It is used in programs such as Photoshop. The process is where you

have an Image imported into the program and cut certain parts out of the

image.

An Example of Cropping :- Image Before Cropping - Image After Cropping

Rendering

An Image is created in program, such as : 3d Studio Max, Bryce 5, Cinema 4d, etc. This image can consist of objects or modelling some images. After this process, the image is then rendered with all the models and effects in which it can be saved as .jpg, .gif, .png, etc.

Examples of Modelling : - Image Rendered in 3d Studio Max

Special FX ( SPFX )

Special effects are used in the film, television, and entertainment industry. So that they can create effects such as traveling to different star systemswhich cannot be achieved by any other means then special effects. They are also used to create effects that would otherwise be too expensive to create in real life such as massive explosions.

Examples of Special Effects : - Image Modelled in Maya 5

( Image was first modelled and then Special Effects were added. Therefore,The Lighting and the material of the model, )

Sampling in Digital Media is the act in which you take a portion of recording a sound and reusing it as an instrument in another recording. This process is done with a program called a Sampler, which is either a computer hardware or program. This is similar to the technique of creating loops of magnetic tapewith a reel-to-reel tape machine.

TIME CODING

Time coding is the process in which you search for a certain time in a musicor a video file. You seek through the data in the file to find the part you want.

MORPHING

Morphing Graphics is the process in which you create your image in program such as 3d Studio Max, LightWave, etc. After creating the image/object that you wanted to obtain, you then make the object ‘morph’ into another object. For Example : Morphing a Box into a Circle.

Examples of Morphing - A square morphing into a circle

TWEENING

Tweening is a technique where an animation program generates extra framesbetween the key frames that the user has created. This gives smootheranimation without the user having to draw every frame. It is similar tomorphing except Tweening is the process where you change the objects position. While morphing is where u morph the entire object into a new one.

Example of Motion Tweening : - Made in Macromedia Flash MX 2004

FRAME GRABBING

Frame Grabbing is when you record a video via a video camera or any other means. After recording, you grab the frames and you edit one by one. This is Mainly used in movies that contain a lot of special effects.

SCANNING

Scanning is the process where the hard copy of a picture isturned into digital format. Scanners are used for all sorts ofthings such as: -images -computerized databases -web pages -and for personal use.

Hardware Used for Scanning -Drum Scanners -Flatbed Scanners -Single Sheet Scanners -Photo Scanners -Hand Scanners -Slide Scanners

An example of Scanning - Picture Drawn then Scanned

OCR

OCR is an abbreviation for a program called : - Optical Character Reader/Recognition.This is the technique in where the scanned product of the hardcopy,be it a drawing a writing, is imported into this program. The program thenruns a check for every curve of the letter and replaces it with the own computerized letters.

FILE SIZES

Page 25: Kent & Patrick DIGITAL MEDIA. DIGITAL MEDIA PRODUCTS

FACTORS AFFECTING FILE SIZESFile Sizes vary from with the complexity of the different types of digital media.music that is compressed onto the computer has a bigger file size to the pictures that are stored onto the computer. However, programs that create thoseImages and save it so you can edit it later on has a larger file size. These fileextensions can vary from: .psd ( photoshop ) .fla ( Macromedia Flash ) and etc.

Page 26: Kent & Patrick DIGITAL MEDIA. DIGITAL MEDIA PRODUCTS

FILE COMPRESSIONFile compression is used to send larger files quicker. When a file is compressed it takes up less bits/bytes, once the file is received and wants to be used a file decompression programsuch as Winzip or Winrar. When the file has been decompressed it is identical to before it was compressed.

Programs used for File Compression: -Winzip -Winrar -Stuffit - Winace

Example of File Compression: - Image showing files of compression

MEMORY

Factors that effect memory are the file sizes of programs, images, music, etc.The more complexity of the file, the more memory it uses up. ( Look at previousSlide for more information on file sizes. ) Memory on the Hard Drive is measuredIn Megabytes ( MB ) or more mainly now, Gigabytes ( GB ). The more of these Units you have, the more space you have to contain more data.1024 kilobyte = 1 megabyte1024 megabytes = 1 gigabyte1024 gigabytes = 1 Terrabyte.

Types of Memory Usage: - RAM - ROM - Cache - Dynamic RAM - Video Memory - Flash Ram - Memory Sticks

Page 28: Kent & Patrick DIGITAL MEDIA. DIGITAL MEDIA PRODUCTS

PROCESSING SPEEDSThe processing speed of memory depends on the amount of RAM you have andthe speed of your Processor. Simply, the bigger the RAM and the faster yourProcessor, the better. However, while creating some images as such, your computer can ‘lag’ when you are using up too much of your virtual memory. You can check the physical memory and your CPU usage on your computerby simply pressing ‘ CTRL+ALT+DEL’ then going into the Performance bar.( Will only work if you have Win XP )

If you are rendering an image with the highest priority while you are using anotherprogram that needs a lot of physical memory, your computer is most probablygoing to crash. To prevent your computer from crashing, only do one high physicalmemory task at one time.

DISPLAY/DISTRIBUTION

Page 30: Kent & Patrick DIGITAL MEDIA. DIGITAL MEDIA PRODUCTS

AudienceThe main audience of digital media presentation would be the casualtelevision and movie watcher. They would be stunned by the moviesthat they watch in the cinema or on TV. The Matrix is one of the mostPopular movies which has digital media noticeably intergrated into it.

HARDWARE FOR DISPLAYINGThe monitor is the form of display for a computer. It works by a cable running from the monitor to the video card. The system converts signals into text and pictures and is displayed like a TV.

There are many types of monitors ranging in cost and performance:

-LCD, these are some of the best types of monitors but cost a lot more then a standard DPI monitor. -Plasma, these are cost more then the LCD but come in much larger sizes.

-DPI, this is the standard monitor and is a lot cheaper then the other two but the quality of the image is a lot worse.
