The secret of the acronym…….N.A.F. …… Not what you thought…..after a good night on the piste a long time ago, the then young top bucks trio of the HARRIERS backed up by several pints declared that they would organise a competition. With their clear thinking heads they decided to call the competition “NAF” to keep their names forever Petanque, Neville Hurren (N), Andy Pucknell (A) and Phil Killick (F). The pedantic might say it should be N.A.P. but never mind the 2009 NAF Competition went ahead as planned.

The HARRIERS NAF COMPETITION was held at Tovil

Workingmen’s Club on Sunday 5th July. The weather was

warm and sunny and despite the competition clashing

with the EPA Premier & Open Leagues, ten teams turned

up to play. The final of the main competition was played

between “THE REJECTS” (David Hurren, Matt Horrigan

and Dave Chalkley) against “GEOFF BOOTH HAS A

SQUARE HEAD” (Chris Watkins, Trevor Gordon and

Simon Doble). The game was a one sided affair, with

David, Matt and Dave outshooting and outpointing Chris,

Trevor and Simon, the “REJECTS” (winners of the 2007

competition) eventually winning 13—0.

The PLATE final was contested between “FRENCH

CONNECTION” (Jan & Martin Baker and Robert Silvy)

and “THE CHRIS WATKINS FAN CLUB” (Geoff Booth,

Dean Ashby and Jack Tivillier). The French Connection

stormed away to a 8—0 lead, but then the Chris

Watkins Fan Club came back fighting and eventually

overtook them to win 13—9.

Clubs represented were Tovil, Fighting Cocks,

Lordswood, Old Sheaf, Meadow, Harrow, Eastern Region

and Harriers.

The prizes were presented by Mo Milner, cash prizes

were given to the winners, Runners Up and losing semi-

finalists in the main competition and wine prizes were

given to the winners of the Plate Competition. Thanks to

PAUL HARDWICK at Tovil Working Men’s Club for

arranging a superb bar-b-que. A good day had by all. REPORT BY DENISE WILLIAMS PICTURES BY JACK MILNER

K.P.A. membership stands at…..40 Clubs…..701 adult members

and 26 junior members.

There are also two additional venues that are seeking to join the

KPA, both in the Medway area.

Support for the Junior Academy has been very low this year, a

new programme with new ideas to be put into place for next year.

Arrangements for the KPA representative team to play Nord Maritime in Dunkerque on

Saturday 15th August are in place. Cost of the coach and ferry is £950. players will be

requested to pay a charge of £25 per player.

AND SO TO BREAN. The E.P.A. National Triples Competition fought out by

representative teams from all the Regions and Counties in England. The K.P.A

Team is selected from the Teams that played in the 4 Triples Qualifiers, played

throughout the summer. Brean is a holiday camp not too far from Weston Super Mare,

and the competition is played over two days. As in past years the K.P.A. will cover the cost

of accommodation for the players representing Kent, at a total cost for the chalets this

year of £3060. One of the requirements of the competition is that players should wear a

matching team strip, and this year the KPA has arranged the strip of 2 polo shirts and 1

fleece to be purchased by players at the cost of £30 per kit. This reduced cost of £30 is

possible due to a donation from SCOTTISH & NEWCASTLE U.K. (see page 9 ).

This kit can be used and worn by individual players at anytime after Brean.

Sounds fair and reasonable, bearing in mind that most Teams from other

Counties are not only expected to pay for their accommodation but they will

probably be required to pay the full price for their kit as well. However, committee

members recorded that there were several Kent players who felt it an imposition to be

asked to pay for their kit, as in the not too distant past the “kit” was provided “free-on

loan” for Brean…...however the same players may not have known how difficult it was to

reclaim this kit after the event to clean and store it ready for the next KPA event, and

also how by chance some of this kit ended up by being owned and worn by people other

than Kent players. It was recorded that the Brean holiday complex had changed hands

and was embarking on a major refurbishment plan, which would almost certainly result in

significant extra costs for chalets in the coming years.

A very, very rough look at the cash……..overall money raised by the KPA from membership

= 700 x £5 = £3500. Money raised from entry fees to the 4 Triples Qualifiers around

£2200.

Greg Davenport and Roland Jones were each granted £125 towards their costs of

representing the EPA at an International “EUROPETANQUE” event.

Team No. 29 applied for, and were awarded, “average points” for Triples Qualifier 4 due

to Greg Davenport representing the EPA at the “Europetanque”, and one other team

member being on holiday.

With due respect to the EPA web-site and MIKE PEGG,

an article from EPA “Latest News” is reprinted.

Dated 18th July 2009. NATIONAL MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY

I was saddened to be informed that Corinne Cooter intends to stand down as the Associations National Membership Secretary at our AGM in November. I have spoken to Corinne and fully understand her reasons which include having enough moans and groans, particularly when the Management Committee give up so much of their time for the benefit of the members. She feels that after 5 years on the management committee it is the right time for others to step forward to give their support for the running of the sport. Corinne will be a hard act for anyone to follow: she is a dependable hardworking member of the M.C. and I know she will be greatly missed by the MC and Regional Membership Secretaries alike as we have all come to depend on her counsel and support. Corinne’s resignation may give the Association some practical difficulties as her appointment was a 2 year term and constitutionally we can only co-opt someone to the role for 1 year. I hope that a volunteer will come forward soon so that we can work with Corinne to effect a smooth transition.

And another one bites the dust ! Corinne, a member of the Meadow Petanque Club, was previously a member of Gravesend

Rugby Club Petanque for many years and is a long term active playing member of Kent, and

was the membership secretary of the KPA prior to joining the Management Committee of

the EPA. For those of us who know her, we recognise the time and efficient hard work

that she has contributed to Petanque over many years.

From the above piece….”Moans & Groans” raises it’s ugly head again, there is not a never

ending supply of people who will give up their spare time for Petanque at national or

county level. Maybe think twice before you “moan & groan”.

Heard recently

”when they relaid their piste they used a sort of oblong cubic grit with sharp corners, and the boule that I have just thrown hit one of the pieces of the oblong cubic grit that was facing backwards, that’s why my boule ended up no where near the Coch”.

Sorry to hear that ASHLEY JAMIESON suffered an injury to his arm when riding his mountain bike. He will not be playing Petanque for a while and will miss the EUROPETANQUE event as preparation for playing in the European Championships, and the EPA Regional Triples Championships at Brean Sands for the K.P.A. Region. Kent players wish for a speedy recovery.

Page 6

On Sunday 26th July, The GEORGE INN , and the

GEORGE PETANQUE CLUB hosted their Open Doubles

with what started out with a nice sunny day very early

on…..with a Bar-B-Que going when the hungry players ar-

rived !!

The weather started off very nice and stayed like that

for most of the day, a great turn-out of 25 teams

turned up ready to win the cash and wine which was up

for grabs in the main and plate competitions. There was

yet again, as in the Regional Qualifier a good party at-

mosphere, along with a great raffle and a cake stall with

fantastic variety for people to make their way through

(thanks to Sheila King and barmaid of the GEORGE,

Donna Coleman for their hard work on making the cakes

and muffins).

The day was run by RICHARD KING (his first ever time), with a little help from Martin

and Annette Eggleton via satellite link from Brugge.

So 25 teams was not the easiest to work with, but in the end it was run with 6 leagues of

4 and a league of 6 with a bye, and taking the top two from the leagues of 4 and top 3

from the league of 6 through to the main competition, with the next 3 best losers. The

remainder were left to fight it out in the plate competition.

After hours of sun and great petanque matches going on…...the finals came to a head with

Rachid Hannache and Martin Baker taking on Dean Ashby and Geoff Booth in the final of

the “main”. With some fantastic pointing and shooting from both sides, Martin and Rachid

got their noses in front and then did not look back, and although Dean and Geoff fought

valiantly, they finally lost the game 13—7.

Elsewhere in the plate final, Larry Belcher and Mark Dennis comfortably beat Marion

from Pen-Y-Coed and her father 13– 1.

A fantastic day had by all spectators and players alike, and a big thank you to all those

who helped including Angela Lake, Del Courvet, Jacqui and Peter and Richard, Brian and

Sheila King ( George PC ) and Matt and Lin Shrimpton for their raffle donations, and to all

other people for their help durin the day and their raffle prizes.

Finally thanks to our landlord Gregg, who is a great support the our Petanque Club.

REPORT BY RICHARD KING

To JEAN LOUIS GUIOT. Reported in last month’s Gazette, that 2009 was the first time that he had won the Kent Singles Championship.

Apparently NOT SO…... in fact he won the Singles Championship a few years earlier….when he was younger. Also he has now given up tennis to concentrate on Petanque.

Notes from KPA Management Meetings… ...accommodation to be supplied free of charge to all names listed above, any other

invited, or uninvited occupiers of the chalets will be charged at £35 per person, there

will be one chalet allocated per team which will be provided with 1 double bed, two single

beds (or single bunk beds) and one double bed settee.

...the Camp Management will be enforcing stricter security this year to ensure that the

fun and gaiety is kept within the confines of the camp, including, no day entry to the site,

entry to the site will be for registered named persons only who are resident and are in

the possession of a wrist identification band.

...the K.P.A. will expect all players to adhere to the K.P.A. Code of Conduct.

...K.P.A Team Strip to be worn for all games.

....the above teams and players are the final result of pre-qualifying competitions, a total

of 35 teams comprising 129 players entered this years County Triples Qualifiers, and it

was sunny and warm at all the 4 events.

Page 8

And another one bites the dust ! Following on after the resignations of Martin Eggleton and

Corinne Cooter from the E.P.A……….TREVOR GLEN handed in his

resignation as the Chairman of the Playing Committee of the

K.P.A. “Had enough of the moaners and groaners” seems to be

the main reason. Trevor gave up his spare time to do his best for Petanque and the K.P.A.

and there is no doubt he did, his tight control of the organisation and finances at Brean

Sands last year helped to minimise the overall costs to the KPA. Trevor’s resignation

sadly happened at the time of year when arrangements for Nord Maritime and Brean

were needed. So in the absence of one of the “moaners” stepping in to take Trevor’s

place…...a meeting was called by the management committee to ensure that business

carried on as usual.

NORD MARITIME SATURDAY 15th AUGUST

Concern…..that at this late stage there appears to be very few players interested in going

to Dunkerque, possible that the early start time of 4:30am at Lordswood may not help.

Members will be contacted to see if an alternative start time of 7:00am at Lordswood

would tempt them to take part. Recorded that the organisers in Dunkerque have arranged

all details for the day including the Petanque and a civic reception.

REGIONAL TRIPLES CHAMPIONSHIP AT BREAN SANDS 19/20 SEPTEMBER

K.P.A. Teams as arranged by the Playing Committee were ratified by the Management

Committee (see page 7 ). Recorded that several players were not happy with an earlier

decision to award “average points” to one Team, details of the Team’s request for average

points to be investigated.

The K.P.A. is lucky in having members who are willing

to volunteer and give up their time to help run

Petanque in Kent. Even so there are some positions on

the Management Committee that are vacant awaiting

a new recruit.

The position of SECRETARY has been vacant since

last November’s A.G.M. when Ken Buchan moved from being Secretary to being the KPA

Treasurer. And along comes John…...JOHN MIDDLETON of Tovil Petanque Club to

become the fresh new Secretary of the K.P.A.. John has been on the Management

Committee of the KPA for the last few years, as a general member, and prior to that as

the representative of the KPA Kent Summer League. Trusting that all KPA members will

give John their full support.

PAUL HARDWICK OF

TOVIL WORKINGMENS CLUB

Continues his behind the scenes work and contribution of time

and effort in the support of Petanque and the K.P.A.

Paul has managed to obtain a substantial generous grant from

NEWCASTLE & SCOTTISH U.K. to the value £650 which will go towards the

purchase of the Team Strip for K.P.A. teams and players

including the teams going to Brean Sands this year.

NEWCASTLE & SCOTTISH are promoting a new drink

A triples competition to be held at Lordswood P.C. for all the entrants

into the Regional Triples Qualifier Competitions who “DID NOT” qualify

and play at the Championships at Brean Sands 2009.

Dennis has been playing for ever, originally with the Hoppers P.C. but now with Hartley

Country Club P.C., Dennis cannot recall every game that he has played, but give him

a couple of hours of your time and he will manage to remember most. Dennis always

keen on sport, he started as a lad with some serious cycling when the only speed

enhancing drug was a cup of hot Bovril followed by a good nights sleep. Proud to be one of the longest retired persons, …..can’t remember what job he did it was that long

ago. However….good to see you out and about again Dennis.

The perfect gentleman, and elder statesman of Petanque.

TRAVELLING PETANQUE ...Hartley Country Club Petanque made their bi-annual trip to their twinned town in France, “Cauchy a La Tour”,

Petanque was good, the final was held in the Boulodrome, and the Hartley triple

of Rae Wall, Geoff Fuller and Maureen Fuller beat the Cauchy triple…………………

but by all accounts, Hartley lost the drinking and dancing contest.

Sorry to hear that the CROWN P.H. Seal, home to Seal

Petanque Club is experiencing difficulties and is closed

for business for the time being, which means that Petanque at the CROWN

is not possible for the present. A big shame, the Crown is a good pub, a

good venue for Petanque, and Seal Petanque Club a long time successful

Club, probably the oldest surviving Petanque Club in Kent, and possibly the

U.K. Best wishes for a reversal of fortunes for the Crown and Petanque at

the Crown.
