KENT PETANQUE ASSOCIATION
ISSUE No.37 JULY 2009
Half way through the 2009 season, so
what do you think of it so far ?
Summers here….. white hairy legs and flip
flops the order of the day…..a design
opportunity for a genius to invent sandals
for petanque. Standard of play and much
improved facilities at several venues
noticed and appreciated by all. The overall
numbers of players entering the triples
qualifiers appears to be up on last year.

After a tiring week contem-
plating two metres of ballot
papers and exercising their
hard fought democratic rights,
the proletariat of Kent washed
off the purple dye from their
digit and headed off for a day
of serious competition plus fun
and enjoyment in the sun, and
sun shade of the Lordswood
Bowl for the 2nd Triples
Qualifier. Thirsty work
satisfied by the reliable quality
of beers served up at
reasonable prices in the Club
House, made for a pleasant day
of petanque. The ideal number
of 32 was met for the number
of teams playing, and produced
a good day of petanque enjoyed
by all. Richard King fell over.

At a time of night when he would normally be taking the dog for a last
walk, and calling it a day with a cup of Horlicks, Lee Jamieson was called
upon to play in the final game of the KENT SINGLES against the one time
Frenchman Jean Louis Guiot, ex-tennis player, ex-teacher bon vivant, and
carrot eater with good night vision.
The final finished at the hour of 12:25, with JEAN LOUIS GUIOT being
the new Singles Champion Of Kent, beating Lee Jamieson 13—6.
Yes….a few hardened petanque folk stayed until the very end to watch the final, and
missed the last bus home. However the standard of play from both players was very high
with outstanding pointing and shooting.
Jean-Louis is one of the founding members of Hartley Country Club Petanque Club and has
not won this particular trophy before. Lee Jamieson is patriarch of the Jamieson Family
Petanque and belongs to the new Meadow Petanque Club.
32 players competed in good weather conditions at the GEORGE P.H. at Meopham from
7pm until the finish at 25 minutes after midnight.
All games in the early rounds were played to 9 points, then 11 points in the semi-finals,
which meant the final was the only game to be played to 13 points.
After the initial 3 rounds, Jean-Louis beat Barry Wing (last years winner) then Mat
Brown and finally Dean Ashby in the semi-final. Lee Jamieson beat Neil Phillips in the
other semi-final by a narrow margin.
A special thanks to those that stayed until the end to watch the final.

It has been noticed that some venues this year have
provided excellent food and outdoor drinks facilities, while
other venues have not. It is recognised that where extra
effort by the organisers and publicans have been made then
they should reap some rewards in the way of support by the
players. Put simply, players bringing their own food and
drink would not be encouraged.
However, food and drink facilities are different and
inconsistent across the counties venues, and players are
not always aware of what will be available for a Sunday competition, so maybe it might be
a good idea if “flyers” and info. advertising Sunday competitions made it clear as to what
type of food and drink facilities will be available, and if “own” food and drink will be
acceptable. Also it might be useful to specify the types of prizes for the winners and
runners up, trophies or cash. Also-also, it might be advisable to notify of any restrictions
and requirements, such as….parking, no dogs etc.
BBC 12 was once again organised by John and Jan Price
from Wales in their own inimitable style. Some 37 players
took part………...from Lordswood, Adur, Amities, and the
Isle of Wight took part, plus a few from Hartley who made
their own way there and appeared to stay in the area for
most of the Spring.
The party departed from Gatwick on Tuesday 26th May en
route to Camping Monplaisir in Valras Plage via Montpellier
airport. The Monplaisir campsite, a new location for the
BBC, is perhaps a little remote if you do not have trans-
port, but nevertheless had excellent facilities and the
chalet accommodation was of a very good standard.
John and Jan had laid on a very busy programme with
games every day except for the Sunday. Visits were made
to several French villages for matches and meals including
LeSpignan, Vendres, Serignan and Valras Plage. Some ex-
cellent, and some not so excellent petanque was played in
the most cordial and friendly of fashions on what can only
be called challenging terrains. We were pleased to see
Norma and Stuart Parkway, who live in Beziers, who played
at some of the venues. Supper at the venues was generally
taken in the open air and in a most convivial atmosphere
washed down by a great deal of wine partaken of by the
locals and visitors alike. In return, the British party
hosted competitions on the campsite and supper was taken
in the Camping Monplaisir restaurant. Whilst much sing
took place, mostly led by J.P., the quality left something to
be desired. On the final evening, Roger the very friendly
owner of the site, and most of the vineyards in the area,
hosted a supper party in Valras Plage town which many of
the party attended to enjoy an excellent meal and the wine
which he kindly provided. All in all, a very enjoyable trip
for petanque players of any standard. MICK WESTON

For those who may be interested in taking part in BBC 13 in the
Spring of 2010, the programme for this year is listed below which
gives some idea of what to expect, keep an eye out for the JOHN
PRICE info, towards the end of this year.

To some, it was just a nice summers day of petanque.
For the KING’S of Meopham it was a double
celebration day it being SHEILA KING’S birthday and
also her wedding anniversary of a happy long term
marriage to BRIAN. Sheila provided a very big cake,
which she distributed amongst the players.
And weren’t the facilities good. Following on from the
excellent food and drink facilities at the George at
Meopham for the 2nd qualifier, Paul Hardwick and his
helpers provided similar excellent facilities at TOVIL.
Bar-B-Que , bar and marquee and a good atmosphere.
The results of this “3rd Qualifier” combined with the
results of the previous two qualifiers put Team No.8
at the top of the Leader Board, Team No.8 comprises
Richard Spillett, Simon Mannering, Matt Horrigan and
Dave Hurren. However the welcome surprise so far is
that team No.24 are second overall, this young team of
Gary Atkinson, Joshua Littley, Ben Littley and Alex
Bruce have played at a consistent high standard
throughout and look like continuing the same form at
the 4th and last “qualifier”. Another young team No.12
are also doing well and are in 9th place, comprising
Dean Ashby, Jennifer
Cooter and Steve Brown.
For the full list of
placings refer to the
KPA web-site. A total of
128 players have so far
played in the “Triples
Qualifiers.”

Which reminds me ! Last year at Lordswood during the
Chairmans Cup Competition, Colin Mears was in charge of the
music, and selected some very good records, mainly old or very
old in line with the average age of the players…...some of the
records had not seen the light of many a day, and were good to
hear again, and some could be described as “you must have” in
your CD collection or on your MP3 player. It follows that there must be a list of all time
“you must have” records that appeal to Petanque players.
So try these for a start …….
Brown Sugar Rolling Stones Bird on a Wire Leonard Cohen
Good Vibrations Beach Boys Let there be Rock AC/DC
Free Bird Lynyrd Skynyrd Roads Portishead
At the River Groove Amada Blowin Free Wishbone Ash
Georgia on my Mind Willie Nelson Lil Darlin Count Basie
New York New York Frank Sinatra Heart of Gold Neil Young
An eclectic mix……..forward your selection to add to the list……..send to the Gazette.
Would be interested to see the list of Colin’s favourites.
COLOUR PREFERENCES As long as it’s black.
Gazette Issue No.2 January 2005 contained this
letter—reprinted thanks to Mark Cooter editor at
the time.
Dear Sirs. Please restrict colour photo’s to the absolute minimum. Not all members are on broadband and it thus takes ages to download, worse than that, printing to distribute hard copies uses an enormous amount of ink. And you know the cost of cartridges even compatible ones ! The latest issue with a full front page in colour is not acceptable. I hope I am not the only one raising this issue. ROLAND BAUMANN SECRETARY HILDEN PARK PETANQUE
Good “ole” Roland had a point in 2005. Is it true of today. Maybe for some. However the
present day 2009 Gazette is put together on the basis that readers will use their own
computers and read from the screen, obtained from the KPA web-site and not necessarily
produce a hard copy. Not too many hard copies have been seen hanging from club notice
boards in the last couple of years !
Any comments ?
