The Redwater Creek Steam & Heritage Society is celebrating excellent news on an exciting development! They have recently received funding from the Tasmanian Community Fund for the next stage of the heritage museum building project.

Stage One of the project was the construction of a 20 x 18m machinery shed, upgrades to the site power supply and improved road access. A post and rail fence along the rail track and landscaping are progressing, assisted by a team from Youth and Family Focus and a Kentish Council grant.

The Society is pleased to report Stage Two is currently underway. Stage Two’s completion will ensure the rich agricultural heritage of Tasmania’s North West is preserved with permanent displays of steam era equipment.

The Redwater Creek Railway site is on track to become a major tourist attraction in the Kentish District. SteamFest will be held this year on March 12th 13th & 14th – a great opportunity to inspect progress! You will find SteamFest at the site of the original Sheffield Railway Station in Spring St, Sheffield.

The Road to Lower Crackpot Tasmazia 500 Staverton Road PROMISED LAND TAS 7306

The Laird of Lower Crackpot has published his memoirs and the book, The Road to Lower Crackpot is now available for purchase at Tasmazia or the Cradle Mountain Candy Company at 44 Main St Sheffield. A review of the book was in the Mercury newspaper mid February.

Whilst being an autobiography, the book also looks at early Sydney through a working man's eyes. It is an easy to read, light and sometimes humorous look at the trials and tribulations of the creation of one of Tasmania's top family award-winning tourist attractions. It is also available at the Sheffield Library should anyone desire to read it that way.

The cost of the book is $39.95 with a full colour cover and mix of photos inside. Copies have already been sold internationally with rave comments from academia.

Taste of the North West - Bigger & Better this year!

It‟s nearly time for the third Taste of the North West festival, with a number of new additions this year.

On April 30, the final Saturday of Mural Fest, come and enjoy the finest food and beverages the region has to offer.

The inaugural event drew an estimated crowd of more than 4,000 people who enjoyed a range of regional produce including rabbit pies, German-style smallgoods, smoked salmon, wood-fired pizzas and beef pies, all washed down with wine from eight north-west vineyards and locally produced beer, mead, cider and fruit wine. Now in its third year, the event is growing with some tasty new additions, including fresh ice-cream made with Ashgrove cream and milk. This year there will be home-made Harvest Moon vegetable soup, Dexter beef,

rabbit and wallaby pies, German-style smallgoods, smoked salmon, wood-fired pizzas and a whole lot more.

Wine stalls will include Lake Barrington Vineyard, Three Willows, White Rock, Barringwood Park, Wilmot Hills and Tiger Ranch Wines along with Willie Simpson‟s beer from Seven Sheds at Railton.

Many of the food and wine exhibitors do not have cellar doors or retail outlets, so this one-day festival is a rare opportunity to

sample their fine produce.

The event will be held at Sheffield‟s King George V Park from 11am to 4pm on April 30 with entertainment all day and face painting for kids. Entry is free.

International Mural Fest is a truly unique art competition that is held annually in Sheffield, Town of Murals, Tasmania. In 2011, the art competition begins on April 24 and concludes on April 30.

The Wilderness Gallery International Mural Fest sees nine artists engage in a public paint-off over 6.5 days. Each artist must complete a 2100mm x 4800mm mural, using the same poem as their mural’s central theme and inspiration. The competition is conducted in Mural Park – Sheffield’s very own outdoor art gallery.

Qualified judges decide the winner of the event’s major prize of $6000. During the paint-off week, visitors and supporters are encouraged to vote for their favourite artwork. At the end of the week, the votes are tallied and the artist whose painting receives the most votes is awarded The Mural Fest Visitors’ Award. This is a prize of $1000. Last year, Julian Bale (The Homesteaders) shared equal first place with Marc Spijkerbosch (Turangawaewae).

New Initiatives

Mount Roland Tourism Precinct Study

The University of Tasmania Cradle Coast Campus has been appointed to study the tourism potential of the Mount Roland precinct. In a contracting decision designed to deliver both innovative study results and regional development, the project will be undertaken by graduates and mature-aged students from the Bachelor of Regional Resource Management degree.

The contract decision was made by a steering committee comprised of representatives from Kentish Council, Cradle Coast Authority, Tourism Tasmania, Cradle Coast Natural Resource Management and the Parks and Wildlife Service.

Kentish Mayor Don Thwaites recognised that it was a relatively high risk decision with the potential for high rewards. “This happened to be the first proposal developed by this new consortium,” he said, “but the quality of ideas in their submission, their fresh approach and relative value gave us confidence that we’d achieve an excellent outcome.” “The fact that our decision is an investment in the consultancy capacity of Tasmania’s North West is a bonus,” he added.

Consultants from the University of Tasmania are currently contacting Kentish tourism operators to seek their input into the study. If you are a Kentish tourism operator and have not been contacted but would like to contribute to the study, please email your contact details to either:-

22 Crockers St, Railton Ph: 03 6496 1139 Open 11am-5pm Wednesday to Sunday

Like much of Railton, Seven Sheds Brewery was hit by the January 14 flood and many friends pitched in to help with the massive clean-up and drying-out operations. Empty kegs were found floating down by the railway line and a pile of soggy cardboard and mud had to be cleaned out of the brewery. Luckily, the hop garden suffered nothing more than a good soaking and will be harvested, as usual, during March. A limited-edition brew called Deluge Ale is planned for release sometime soon.

At the same time, the Railton micro-brewery will roll out Whisky Willie Warmer, which will be both Tasmania‟s strongest and most-expensive beer to date. The special brew is the result of a collaboration with Lark‟s Whisky Distillery in Hobart. Three 50-litre wooden casks which had previously held Lark‟s Whisky were transported north to Seven Sheds and re-filled with Willie Warmer back in June 2010.

Over a seven-month maturation period, the dark, strong ale absorbed a lot of whisky and wood characters from the cask, with the alcohol strength increasing from 6.3% alc./vol. to 10.5% alc./vol. when it was bottled in late January. Only 199 individually-numbered 500ml bottles will be available at a price-tag of $29 each.

More limited-edition brews are planned in future to complement the regular Kentish Ale, Willie Warmer, Razzamatazz and Elephant‟s Trunk brands.
