It’s time to disconnect and reconnect with what matters! For families, businesses, and out-

door lovers, we know there is nothing that can compare to the “South’s Great Lake!” Sure

there are other lakes in the South, but none like Kentucky Lake, and the beauty, energy, and

lifestyle that we’ve built on these shores is something worth experiencing. Kentucky Lake is

the place to watch your kids become kids again, reconnect with the ones that matter through

food and fellowship, and quite possibly find out why fishing just comes naturally here!

At Kentucky Lake, we understand that the perfect vacation is different for everyone, so if

you’re not the avid angler, no worries! That’s

what makes Kentucky Lake naturally perfect;

you have the ability to create a unique vacation

experience that is just right for you and your fam-

ily. Whether it’s socializing around the campfire,

laying out by the pool, or tubing and skiing along

2,300 miles of shoreline, Kentucky Lake has

what you need. With attractions such as mini

golf and go-karts, live country music shows, a

local drive-in, and our state resort parks, there is

always something to do day or night!

Kentucky Lake was born in 1944 after the com-

pletion of Kentucky Dam. The Dam itself is 206

feet high and 8,422 feet long and is used to help

control floods on the lower Ohio and Mississippi

Rivers. Kentucky Lake is the largest man-made

lake in the eastern United States drawing in

millions of visitors each year.

Kentucky Lake’s neighbor, Land Between the

Lakes, offers a variety of recreation. With over

170,000 acres, you can experience just about

anything: take a drive through the Elk and Bison

Prairie, see a constellation presentation at the

planetarium or observe wildlife at the nature

center. You can also visit The Homeplace or

spend the day hiking or biking through the

wilderness. Either way, there is something that

every member of the family will enjoy.

Don’t worry, it’s perfectly natural to want to relax

and have fun, so try Kentucky Lake’s natural per-

fection! We hope this guide becomes a useful

resource in planning your vacation. It’s your one-

stop shop to plan the entire trip! You can find all

of our lodging, dining, and activities inside.

Come discover what makes us Great!

The Tennessee Valley Authority built

Kentucky Dam at Gilbertsville, Ky.,

impounding the Tennessee River in

1945. Kentucky Lake grew from that

span, backing up more than 180

miles south, far into Tennessee.

It’s a huge water hole with almost

50,000 acres of surface in just Ken-

tucky’s portion of the impoundment.

With major embayments, feeder

creeks and coves lining both flanks

of the reservoir, the shoreline is just

immense.

Perhaps the fish that generate the

most headlines is black bass.

There’s a 15-inch minimum size

limit on black bass at Kentucky Lake

and the canal-linked sister reservoir

Lake Barkley.

Generous spawns of bass, however,

have kept oodles and gobs of fish

present and growing well beyond

the minimal “keeper” size.

While a clear majority of Kentucky Lake black

bass are largemouth, there’s also a wrist-wrench-

ing population of smallmouth bass.

Depending on where and how anglers fish,

smallmouth can now represent a fair segment

of the black bass catch. Five-pound and larger

smallmouth aren’t strangers.

Kentucky Lake’s earlier reputation, however,

was built on crappie. Unbelievable catches of

crappie made the Tennessee River impoundment

legendary way back when, and it’s still a crappie

angler’s mecca all these years later.

The dominant white crappie species lost ground

to the once fewer black crappie, which favors

clearer water and rocky habitat, benefiting from

the changing conditions.

Biologists say crappie numbers are healthy but

cyclic, with ups and downs every few year.

The changes that came with a maturing Kentucky

Lake made a big deal out of a whole class of

little fish. The habitat tweaks that came with

clearer waters are seemingly the reason that

bluegill and redear sunfish transformed from kid

stuff to a prominent sport fishery.

In short, the bluegill and redears nowadays

produce catches of quality fish in sumptuous

quantities, especially during spring and early

summer spawning times.

Other warm weather fishing mainstays are white

bass and their slightly smaller cousins, yellow

bass. These predators – “stripes” to the local an-

glers – can be caught most of the year but really

shine when summer’s heat is on.

Trollers fishing for white bass as well as those

casting and working lures on or near the bottom

on offshore structures sometimes hook bonus

fish – sauger, the Tennessee River cousin of the

walleye. Sauger are often overlooked, but these

glassy-eyed, toothy torpedoes are a great game

fish and arguably the tastiest of all the lake’s

culinary possibilities.

If bigger is always better, however, and fishing for

skillet or deep fryer fodder is a primary concern,

you might want to consider Kentucky Lake’s

catfish: channel cats, flatheads and the plentiful

and often ponderous blue catfish.

Largely underfished and overlooked in favor of

other species, catfish can be taken throughout

the year. But they are an excellent bet during

the days of summer when it may be a little more

difficult to catch some other species.

Kentucky Lake is a giant lake with plenty of

relative giant fish of all sizes – from saucer-sized

bluegill, to trophy bass to catfish as long as your

leg. What species do you want to chase next?

Kentucky Lake - The South’s Great Lake

HUNTING

or

buck

duck?

Take a walk on the wild side of the

Kentucky Lake area for some memo-

ry-making hunting adventures.

The woodlands, waters, fields and

sloughs of the region keep pulling

back sportsmen every season for

pursuits of game, large and small,

furred and feathered.

A headliner for many hunters is the

white-tailed deer, and the Ken-

tucky Lake area grows plenty and

whoppers of the species. The state

of Kentucky in general is among

the leaders nationally in producing

record book quality bucks.

Kentucky’s long-running archery

season, crossbow hunting, muz-

zleloader and modern rifle seasons

provide ample opportunities to

search out that wallhanger and

the freezer-filling venison the deer

hunter seeks.

Kentucky wildlife managers encour-

age hunters to take more whitetails to help hold

the burgeoning population in check, so come on

and lend a hand.

Public land is often critical to opportunity, and

the big lake area has oodles of it. Chief among

these is the U.S. Forest Service-managed Land

Between the Lakes National Recreation Area.

The LBL is a topic all itself, an enormous wooded

peninsula sandwiched between Kentucky Lake

and the sister waters of Lake Barkley.

The LBL is 170,000 acres of ridges and hollows,

more than 90 percent of it forested in oak- and

hickory-dominated hardwoods. The big woods

area has long been a favorite for visiting deer

hunters who take advantage of tremendous el-

bowroom, bonus deer permits, quota gun hunts

and freewheeling archery hunting opportunities.

Another kind of habitat, if anything, more rich

in game, is found in the Clark’s River National

Wildlife Refuge that centers around the bottom-

land hardwood corridor of Clark’s River both

upstream and downstream from its headquarters

in Benton.

Presently regulated in conjunction with statewide

seasons, Clark’s River NWR offers thousands of

acres where enterprising hunters can probe the

bottomlands for boomer bucks in deer season.

Turkeys rival deer when it comes to stirring

hunter passions, and the Kentucky Lake area

is packed with the big birds. The rites of spring

mean turkey gobbler hunting hereabouts, and it

mobilizes a camouflage-clad legion in pursuit of

old Tom.

The LBL hosts quota turkey hunting as well as

non-quota, open hunting opportunities each

spring gobbler season. Clark’s River NWR also

hosts a great deal of turkey hunting under state-

wide season regulation.

Waterfowling is another driving force for sports-

men. Kentucky Lake itself can be a chilly season

hotbed of waterfowl action when Mississippi

Flyway migrators spin off for some big water rest

stops.

The big reservoir attracts a mixture of puddle

ducks and some divers, and a smattering of

Canadian geese add some extra big bird zest

Kentucky Lake - The South’s Great Lake

to the action. Free lance hunting from boat and

shoreline blinds can be rewarding throughout

the season. Kentucky Lake hunting can get a jolt

of added duck movement during serious winter

cold when bottomland waters freeze over and

birds seek out the open water of the reservoir.
