Foreword from KAHC

Welcome to a world-class destination

It gives me great pleasure to write the introduction to this latest edition of the KAHC Kenya Hotel & Restaurant Guide.

It has been over 10 years since the first KAHC Guide was published and in Kenya’s hospitality sector much has changed in the interim. During this time, Nairobi has witnessed a dramatic hotel expansion as many of the world’s leading brands have opened properties throughout our capital city.

Leading venue

It’s a clear sign that Nairobi is not only the commer-cial hub of East Africa but also a leading venue for major meetings and events – and, of course, the starting and finishing point for visitors on safari.

Kenya has had its ups and downs in recent times. But, following President Obama’s historic visit in 2015 to

the land of his forefathers, I believe our nation is once again the destination of choice for those visiting Africa. Added to which, His Holiness Pope Francis was due to grace us with his presence in November.

At the coast, recovery in 2015 has been slower than in Nairobi and in the game parks. Nevertheless, everyone in the coast branch of our Association remains highly optimistic about the future – and about Kenya’s ability to be globally competitive as one of the world’s truly great beach destinations.

So, whether you are coming just for the sun, to see our magnificent wildlife or to attend a trade show or conference – or even a combination of all three – a warm and heartfelt Kenyan karibu awaits.

KTB foreword

Tourism is back on track for strong recovery

Jambo! Kenya is the home to authentic safari and continues to offer other diversified tourism products available

across the country.

This has been a remarkable year for Kenya in the history of its foreign relations. Kenya has enjoyed high-profile visits and meetings with a focus on cohesion, security and development, thus endorsing the national brand in spite of previous challenges.

During 2015 Kenya hosted a number of key international events that have helped raise the destination’s profile and thus increase the brand equity. They include the Global Entrepreneurship Summit, attended by dignitaries and investors and graced and steered by United States President Barack Obama, as well as the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) Regional Confer-ence, chaired by the organisation’s general secretary, Dr Taleb Rifai, while the fifth edition of the Magical Kenya Travel Expo was a resounding success.

Kenya’s status as a preferred MICE destination has enhanced our position globally. Increased investment in tourism projects, especially among international brand-name chains of hotels, has played a big role in positioning Kenya as a business hub of choice. And these events have led to a significant growth in tourism.

The rapid improvement in our infrastructure has been a remarkable achievement – one with a direct impact on tourism growth. The expansion of Jomo Kenyatta Inter-national Airport in particular has seen new airlines such as China Southern join the list of carriers flying directly to Nairobi, with others such as Lufthansa returning to Kenyan skies. Roads leading to tourism facilities such as parks and reserves have also been improved.

Enhanced security, greater confidence in the destina-tion and a general feeling about the ease of doing business have given the sector a reason to get back on its recovery track. Within the prevailing conducive environment, players in the sector have continued to provide excellent products and services to global standards.

There was recognition of the industry at this year’s World Travel Awards in Seychelles in which close to 30 travel trade organisations were crowned Africa’s leading facilities in various categories. Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) was voted Africa’s leading tourist board for the fourth time in a row. Our fame as home to the Big Five and as a beach destination was confirmed by the crowning of Masai Mara National Reserve as Africa’s leading game park and Diani as Africa’s leading beach.

In conclusion, we have what it takes to continue flying the Magical Kenya banner and we call on visitors to become our brand ambassadors. We are upbeat that the sector is on track and on the road to recovery.

Finally, let me welcome you to this edition of the KAHC guide, which will give you all the hotel information you need in order to sample our hospitality at its best.

Karibu Kenya.

Introduction

Obama visit sets seal on nation

,s tourism revival

Prospects are on the up and up. Kenya is now on a roll as the nation’s vitally important tourism industry gets back to

normal and foreign visitors return to what is East Africa’s top destination.

The catalyst for this welcome development and the upbeat mood can be traced back to President Obama’s historic visit to Kenya in July 2015. This highly publicised visit – and his positive impres-sion of a nation with which he has strong familial ties – marked a dramatic turning point for the nation’s tourism sector.

As it was, the president’s stay in Nairobi more or less coincided with (or resulted in) the lifting or relaxation by several source market nations of various, mostly unnecessary, travel advisories. After July there was an almost immediate upturn in hotel bookings, more visitors coming to view the annual wildebeest migration and a series of key announcements in terms of resumed charter flights to the coast. Good news, indeed.

For the most part, the travel advisories had only a negative impact on tourism at the coast, with its heavy reliance on all-inclusive and package-type holidays. For Nairobi and the national parks it has been pretty much business as usual. Even so, any additional visitors are welcome.

Nairobi was largely immune from the drop in visitor numbers thanks to its status as the commercial and cultural capital of East Africa. This meant that busi-ness visitors were still flocking to the fast-growing city and that the number of attendees at the city’s various top conferences and exhibitions stayed at a high level. The capital’s popularity continues to drive the expansion of its hotel sector, with a constant stream of new properties being completed, under construction or planned for the coming years. There is an almost similar expansion across the nation as new hotels spring up in regional towns and cities.

Achievement

Kenya has come a long way and is still going places. The nation has so much to offer and has achieved so much since independence in 1963. This achieve-ment was in many ways perfectly illustrated when, for the first time, the country took top spot in the medal table in the 2015 World Athletics Champion-ships in Beijing – an astonishing performance by any measure and especially so as Kenya won gold in some non-traditional events such as men’s javelin and men’s 400 metres hurdles.

Despite some problems in recent times, Kenya is still a tourism destination with just about every-thing: wildlife in abundance, snow-capped moun-tains and some of Africa’s best and least-crowded beaches. It also has a fast-improving infrastructure, with new airport terminals, impressive highways and a soon-to-be-upgraded rail network.

Then there is the excellent locally produced food (always a surprise to first-time visitors) along with incomparable levels of service and, of course, hotels, camps and lodges that are the envy of other destinations.

So come and see for yourself what President Obama loves so much about his heritage and why Kenya rightly remains everyone’s African favourite destination.A

Nairobi

Even better choice of hotels in buzzing capital

Nairobi is East Africa’s de facto capital – a fun-filled metropolis that is the region’s leading business and confer-

ence destination as well as a convenient overnight stop for those arriving in Kenya en route to the nation’s game parks.

And there seems to be no limit to its popularity – a fact borne out by the number of new hotels opened recently or under construction in the city. In the space of 10 years or so Nairobi has been transformed from a city with a somewhat limited range of accommodation to one where visitors are spoilt for choice across all price categories and in terms of which area of the city to stay in. In fact, based on current expansion plans, by 2018 Nairobi is expected to have nearly 20,000 guest-rooms.

As a result of this building boom, Nairobi now has nearly 20 five-star hotels – an impressive number by any standards and undoubtedly one of the highest in Africa. Overall, the average room rate for the city is about US$ 160 a night.

Another aspect of this frenzied and much-needed expansion is the fact that some areas of the city have gained new and more conveniently located properties. At one time, international-class hotels were confined to the central business district and, perhaps, the Westlands commercial area. Today, there are few parts of Nairobi that cannot boast at least one quality hotel.

At one time, for example, there was not a single hotel close to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). Today, visitors have three or four to choose from, with even more bed capacity planned for the Mombasa Road area.

A further addition to the mix of upscale executive-style hotels is the city’s new 271-room Radisson Blu, due to open in late 2015 in Upper Hill, close to

the Crowne Plaza and the Country Lodge – the first such property in this fast-growing business district. Other big international names such as Marriott and Hilton (in addition to the existing hotel at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre) are also said to be planning new properties.

Similarly, there was once nowhere to stay in Gigiri and close to the United Nation’s Africa headquar-ters and the United States Embassy. But this is a thing of the past and new hotels have opened in the area, led by the contemporary-styled Tribe at The Village Market. The owners are now building a second, as yet unnamed, 215-room and 3.5 star property nearby for completion in late 2016.

Hotels

Other areas previously underserved in terms of hotels are adjoining Kileleshwa/Muthangari. But the 101-room Dusit D2 Nairobi on Riverside Drive and the 280-room Tune Hotel on Rhapta Road (which opened in 2015 and is a new brand for Kenya) appear to have solved this scarcity.

Already a key spot for business visitors, Westlands is set for new budget-priced hotels to add some options to the more upmarket offerings of the imposing Villa Rosa Kempinski on Chiromo Road, the charming Southern Sun Mayfair, the classy Sankara and the well-established Jacaranda.

At the same time, many existing and long-estab-lished properties are improving their offering as the local market becomes ever more competitive. Serena, arguably the most venerable of Kenyan brands, has announced plans to refurbish its flagship Nairobi property and build a new conference centre.

So, whatever your budget or preference in terms of location, Nairobi’s hoteliers have the perfect place for you – with even more on the way.

Kenya Coast

Better times for coast as visitor numbers revive

It’s renaissance time at the coast. Having endured a really tough period, hotels along the nation’s 1,420 km coast are

perfectly poised to benefit from a sharp upturn in visitors in 2016 as inbound tour operators and charter flights eagerly return to what is still one of Africa’s most inviting value-for-money destinations.

Few can rival Kenya’s long stretches of mostly deserted white soft-sand beaches lapped by a delightfully inviting and bountiful turquoise ocean. There’s also a year-round climate that is close to perfect for sun-worshippers.

Broadly speaking, ocean-facing hotels are grouped into certain locations rather than being spread out haphazardly along the coast. And the choice is simply breathtaking. From the grandest of five-star resorts to the humblest of seaside guesthouses, there is something here for everyone.

Dazzling

So, starting from the Tanzanian border, Msambweni is the first tourist spot going north – and still very much off the beaten track. Then it’s on to Diani Beach, with its dazzling collection of fine hotels, shops, restaurants and nightclubs and with its own Ukunda airport offering regular daily flights to Nairobi. There are one or two properties, for example at Tiwi, between Diani and Mombasa.

There are surprisingly few hotels in Mombasa itself – a remarkable situation for a city with a popula-tion of around 1.3 million. But with a limited choice, many business visitors prefer to stay on the coast just outside the city and travel in for meetings.

Heading further north from Mombasa, hotels are concentrated in Nyali and Bamburi and Shanzu before you cross the creek to Mtwapa. Next stop is, still largely undiscovered, Kilifi with its own creek; then there is Watamu, which, like Diani is

laid out in strip form with an eclectic range of hotels including all-inclusive as well as small and decidedly upmarket; and finally onwards to stylish Malindi, where the airport may finally be upgraded soon to accept international flights.

For those seeking barefoot chic or adventurous activities such as kite-surfing, there is a handful of small-scale, homespun but charming hotels on the coast north of Malindi. And finally to Lamu, where there is no motorised transport and where the accommodation remains nicely in keeping with the destination’s Unesco World Heritage Site status.

The downturn in tourism of recent times has natu-rally had a negative impact on investment and, unlike elsewhere in Kenya, there has been little in the way of new hotels opening or being started. But now, with vastly improved prospects, there are early signs that investor confidence has returned to the coast. As a result there is expected to be a dramatic increase in new hotel construction and a spate of upgrades to existing properties.

There is also a trend towards the building of condo-miniums such as those in Kikambala and Malindi. These developments only add to the coast as a desti-nation and don’t necessarily undermine the status of its more traditional and popular hotels and resorts.

One notable exception to the dearth of new hotels is the 18-room Sun Africa Hotels Beach Resort in Nyali – it’s something different from the more traditional style of properties usually found just to the north of Mombasa.

In short, there is an almost endless list of hotels and resorts from which to choose stretching across hundreds of kilometres of beach front – all of them, however, offering a warm Kenyan welcome and serving the kind of ‘fresh from the ocean’ seafood for which the coast is justly famed. Good food, attentive service, great prices, broad smiles all coupled with endless sunshine. What more could you want?

Atua Enkop Africa

Four diverse experiences, same exclusive luxury

The Atua Enkop Africa collection is made up of four small, exclusive camps located in three prime viewing

areas, offering a diversity of experience.

Atua Enkop Africa means ‘out of Africa’ in the Maa language of the Maasai people and a uniquely African hospitality is reflected in the warm, luxurious ambience of its camps.

Elephant Bedroom Camp offers luxury in a setting of breathtaking beauty. It lies on the bank of the Ewaso Nyiro River, shaded by doum palms and other trees of the riverine forest. Elephants regu-larly wander through the camp, which is unfenced, allowing visitors a close-up experience. The spacious

tents have colourful African touches, while the lounge and dining areas are decorated in a vibrant safari style with soft intimate lighting. It’s an ideal place to relax between game drives.

Mbweha Camp is tucked away in the spectacular Great Rift Valley on the private 6,400 acre Congreve Conservancy (part of the larger Soysambu Conserv-ancy) with fine views over the Eburru and Mau ranges. Although it is only a few hours from Nairobi, the camp has a relaxed, ‘away from it all’ atmosphere. Lake Nakuru National Park is about 20 minutes away, and the Conservancy provides opportunities for bush walks, hiking, mountain biking and night game drives. A swimming pool is a recent addition to the camp.

Tipilikwani Mara Camp is a luxury camp on the bank of the Talek River overlooking the plains of the Masai Mara and within easy reach of game viewing areas. There are four family tents with stand-alone bathtubs and showers. In addition to its prime location, the camp offers excellent food, personalised service and traditional Kenyan hospitality. Games drives offer a chance to appreciate the diversity of animals and birds of the Masai Mara as well as many migratory species. The camp boasts a new swimming pool.

Mara Ngenche Safari Camp is a small, intimate, luxurious and elegant camp set in a beautiful riverine forest in the heart of the Masai Mara. It has 10 spacious, well appointed, en-suite tents deco-rated with a blend of modern African decor and old-world charm. Each tent is partially enclosed in its own boma, with four-poster beds and fine views of the two rivers, Talek and Mara. The camp is unfenced to allow the free movement of animals through the grounds. It offers an elegant yet relaxed atmosphere in which to experience the African bush.

User,s guide

Using the Kenya Hotel, Restaurant & Entertainment Guide is easier than ever. Here is the new easy-to-follow

list of symbols denoting the key facilities available at properties featured in this guide.

The purpose of these icons is to allow users to see, at a glance, the main services on offer. For a more in-depth look at an individual hotel, resort, lodge, camp or club, there is also a short write-up about the property and a list of its unique features.

The idea is that readers can quickly and efficiently identify where each property is located, find up-to-date contact details and differentiate easily between KAHC members. Facilities highlighted are those currently available to guests.

Ecotourism

Some of the hotels, lodges and camps listed in this guide have official eco-ratings from Ecotourism Kenya with an appropriate symbol to denote the property’s exact eco-classification. These properties are recognised for best practices in environmental conservation, sustainable resource utilisation and socio-economic investment. Properties are rated gold, silver or bronze.

Ecotourism Kenya members are also given the appropriate logo to denote that the owners of these properties subscribe to the general environmental aims and objectives of the association, but may not have an official eco-rating yet.

GOLD-RATED – Gold Eco-rating is an indicator that a facility has achieved superior

and replicable levels of excellence in responsible resource use, environmental conservation and socio-economic investments.

SILVER-RATED – Silver Eco-rating demon-strates a move towards excellence; awarded

to facilities that show innovations in responsible resource use, environmental conservation and socio-economic investment.

BRONZE-RATED – Bronze Eco-rating is the entry level and demonstrates a facil-

ity’s awareness and commitment to environmental conservation, responsible resource use and socio-economic investment.
