Introduction The School of Applied was established in December 2007, from departments previously in the School of Health Sciences and the School of Environmental Studies and Human Sciences. It consists of 5 department namely: Department of Community Resource Management; Department of Fashion Design and Marketing; Department of Food, Nutrition and Dietetics; Department of Recreation Management and Exercise Science and Department of Physical and Health Education

LocationThe School is located behind the University Health Unit on the upper floor of the Old Home Economics building. Most of the courses in the School of Applied Human Sciences are offered at the Main Campus.

Degree Programmes OfferedThe departments offer undergraduate and graduate programs. All undergraduate programs run for 4 years except for the Certificate programmes which run for One

(1) year and Diploma Programmes which run for two (2) years. The Postgraduate programmes run for a minimum of two (2) years except the Postgraduate Diploma programmes which are one-year courses.

DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNITY RESOURCE MANAGEMENT AND EXTENSIONCommunity Resource Management Department aims at providing high quality instruction, research and community outreach programmes that will enable graduates to become competent, versatile, entrepreneurial, and diverse and market oriented. The programme provides graduates with academic and professional training to enable them become competent Community Resource Management Practitioners. Students are also trained to become versatile in diverse sectors of the economy. The Programme provides a foundation for life-long education in Community Resource Management and related areas.

Bachelor of Science (Community Resource Management)

Entry requirements:In addition to meeting the minimum entry requirements of Kenyatta University, candidates must have done one of the following categories of subjects at KCSE and passed with a minimum grade of C+ in either of the following subjects:

Alternative A: Biology or Agriculture, Geography or Home ScienceAlternative B: Business Studies, Commerce, Accounting or any other Art-based Subject

Diploma holders in community development or extension-related work from a recognized institution with at least a credit pass are also eligible.

Master of Science in Community Resource Management

Entry requirements:

The common regulation for all Masters Degrees in Kenyatta University shall apply. In addition, the following shall be eligible for registration:Holders of either a minimum of Second Class Lower Division Degree in Community Resource Management, Family & Consumer Sciences, Home Economics or any other related field of study.

PhD in Community Resource Management

Entry requirements:

MSc. in Community Resource Management, MSc. in Family and Consumer Studies, Community-related studies and extension.

Career Opportunities:

CRM provides a greater scope in careers that are suitable for its graduates. It is evident that qualified manpower is also needed in private and development sectors through industries and NGOs. Employment can be in the areas of health, nutrition, resource mobilization and management, programme or project management, community intervention programmes, family livelihoods, poverty reduction projects, education, water and sanitation, social and extension work.

DEPARTMENT OF FASHION DESIGN AND MARKETING

The Department of Fashion Design and Marketing offers high quality and dynamic training focusing on fashion design, apparel production, quality control and technical skills to enhance local and international trade in textile products. The Programme is designed to assist individuals to become self-reliant by training them for self-employment and diverse opportunities in the textile industry. The curriculum provides entrepreneurship training to enable graduates contribute to the development of the economy through job-creation. It is envisaged that the graduates will be marketable not only in the public sector, but also in the private and development sectors.

Bachelor of Science in Fashion Design and MarketingEntry requirements:

Candidates must satisfy the minimum entry requirements of Kenyatta University. In addition, candidates must have done at least one of the following subjects at KCSE and passed with a minimum of Grade C+; Arts and Design/Home Science and any one Science subject or C plain with a Diploma in Fashion Design or Clothing Technology from recognized institutions.

Master of Science in Fashion Design and MarketingEntry requirements:

A holder of First Class, Upper Second Class or Second Class Lower Division Bachelor of Science in Textile Science and Design or BSc. in Textile, Clothing or Fine Art which has bias in textiles or its equivalent from a recognized university.

A holder of First Class, Upper Second Class or Second Class Lower Division in Bachelor of Education (Home Economics or Home Science) or B.Sc. in Textiles, Clothing or Fine Art, which has bias in textiles, from a recognized university.

PhD. in Fashion Design and Marketing

Entry requirements:

MSc. in Fashion Design and Marketing, MSc. in Textile Science, MSc. in Clothing and Textile Design from a recognized institution.

Career Prospects:

Fashion Design and Marketing graduates will find employment in fashion design, garment manufacturing, interior design, textile research, quality inspection, textile marketing and NGOs. They can establish their own business and create employment opportunities for others.

DEPARTMENT OF FOODS, NUTRITION AND DIETETICS

The Department has been in existence since 1996. The Programme have been developed in accordance with the current market trends. These Programmes have been streamlined to cater for the needs of potential candidates from various categories. Thus the programmes are offered in various modes of study. The objective of the programme is to equip candidates with specialized knowledge and skills in the areas of food, nutrition and dietetics; provide adequately trained professionals in food, nutrition and dietetics; provide professional training that enable candidates provide services in hospital, community based projects, food industry, emergency services, consultancy services, international organizations and others; offer training that be advanced leading to professionalization.

Diploma in Foods, Nutrition and Dietetics

Entry Requirements

Candidate must satisfy the minimum entry requirement for Kenyatta University for diploma courses of mean KCSE grade C In addition candidates must have a grade of C in English, Biology/ Biological Sciences and Chemistry/ Physical sciences and C- in any of the following subjects Physics, Mathematics, Home Science or Agriculture A mean grade C- with a certificate in Nutrition and Dietetics from a Kenya Nutritionists and Dieticians Institute (KNDI) recognized institution, and must be registered by KNDI or by equivalent bodies for international students.

Bachelor of Science in Foods, Nutrition and Dietetics

Entry Requirements

Candidates must satisfy the minimum entry requirements of Kenyatta University and the School of Applied Human Sciences of a mean grade of C+(plus) at KCSE or its equivalent.In addition candidates must have a minimum grade of C+(plus) in each of the following subjects; Mathematics, Biology/Biological Science, Chemistry/Physical Science, English/Kiswahili. Or, Diploma holders in Nutrition and Dietetics or Nutrition and Food Science with a credit pass and a grade of C at KCSE

Postgraduate Diploma in Nutrition

Entry Requirements

The common regulations for all Post Graduate Diploma in the University shall apply.The common regulations for all Post Graduate Diploma in the School of Applied Human Sciences shall apply.The following shall be eligible for admission for the Post Graduate Diploma in Nutrition:

A holder of Bachelor’s Degrees in health, Agriculture, biological sciences, food and nutrition related sciences. To graduate with postgraduate Diploma in nutrition, the candidate must have done and passed at least 13 units (12 core units and 1elective). The postgraduate diploma will take a minimum period of one academic year.

Master of Science in Foods, Nutrition and Dietetics

Entry RequirementsThe common regulations for all Masters Degrees in the University shall apply (First class honours, upper second class honoursand lower second class).The common regulations for all Masters Degrees in the School of Applied Human Sciences shall apply.The holders of the following degrees and post graduate diploma from recognized institutions shall be eligible for admissions for Masters’ degree in Foods and Nutrition A holder of Bachelor of Science Degree in Foods, Nutrition and Dietetics, Community Nutrition, Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics and a holder of Bachelor of Education Degree in Home Economics OR A holder of post graduate diploma in Nutrition from a recognized institution.

Ph.D in Foods, Nutrition and DieteticsThe department’s PhD course is by research and thesis.

Graduates from the department get absorbed in a wide range of areas including: government ministries, non-governmental organizations, research institutions, hospitals, food industries, hotels and educational institutions both locally and internationally.

DEPARTMENT OF RECREATION MANAGEMENT AND EXERCISE SCIENCEThe department boasts of highly qualified and vibrant faculty who include professors, Senior Lecturers, Lecturers, Assistant Lecturers and Tutorial Fellows in the disciplines of Exercise Sciences and Recreation Management. The department currently offers the following programmes:

Certificate in sports administration and Management (1 Year)

Entry Requirements:A minimum of C- in KCSE or Division III at “O” level or its equivalent.

Diploma in Sports Administration (2 Years)

Entry Requirements:A minimum of C (Plain) in KCSE or Division III at “O” level or P1/S1 teachers’ certificate or Kenyatta University’s certificate course in Sports Administration and Management.

Bachelor of Science (Exercise and Sports Science)This programme prepares manpower to work with elite sportsmen and women, non-elite players, youth, aged, persons with special needs, at institutional/corporate and individual levels.

Entry requirements:A minimum of C+ in KCSE or its equivalent and at least a grade of C+ in one of the following subjects: Biology, Maths, Physical Science, Geography, Physics or Chemistry OR a Grade of C (Plain in KCSE or its equivalent in Sports Administration and Management, Physical Education, Hospitality, Nutrition, Nursing, Physiotherapy,

Produces manpower with skills and knowledge of the leisure, recreation and hospitality industry including the areas of Tourism, Corporations, Education, Hotels, Sports Clubs and Sports etc among others.

Entry requirements:

At-least a C+ in KCSE or its equivalent or a Grade of C (Plain) in KCSE or its equivalent with Diploma in Sports Administration and Management, Physical Education, Hospitality and Tourism, Education with Geography or related fields.Postgraduate Diploma in Sports Administration and Management.Aims at producing personnel who can serve the Sports Industry and Administrators and Managers.

Entry requirements:At least a Bachelors degree from a recognized university.

Master of Science (Recreation and Sports Management) or Master of Science (exercise and Sports Science) (2 Years)

Entry requirements:

Minimum of Second Class Lower Division degree in Leisure/Recreation/Sports Management, Special Education or related fields such as Medicine, Nursing, Nutrition, Physiotherapy, Biochemistry and Biomechanics OR holders of relevant Postgraduate Diploma in Sports administration and Management and related disciplines.

DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICAL AND HEALTH EDUCATION

The department of Physical and Health Education is one of the oldest departments in the university. It has been the only department in the country offering Physical Education degree programme to secondary school and Teacher Training institutions. The department has experienced tremendous expansion in terms of degree programmes and student enrolment. The department has highly qualified staff with varied professional training background that includes Professors, Senior Lecturers, Lecturers and Tutorial Fellows in the area of Physical and Health education. The department currently offers THE following programmes:

Diploma in Physical and Health Education (2 Years)Entry requirements:

A minimum of C (Plain) in KCSE or Division II at “O” level or its equivalent.

Bachelor of Education (Physical and Health Education).Aims at producing Physical Education teacher for the Education sector.

Entry requirement:At-least C+ at KCSE or Diploma with Physical Education as a Teaching subject or any other equivalent that qualifies one to join University.

Master of Science (Physical and Health Education) (2 Years)Entry requirements:

Minimum of second class Lower Division degree or its equivalent in Physical Education or related fields.

PhD (Physical and Health Education)The PhD programme is by thesis only.

Entry requirements: A Masters degree in Physical Education or other related areas of specialization.
