Introduction• Tourism in India is the largest service industry, with a

contribution of 6.23% to the national GDP and 8.78% of the total employment in India.

• According to World Travel and Tourism Council, India will be a tourism hot-spot from 2009 to 2018, having the highest 10-year growth potential.

• Here we are taking the case study of the two states:-– Kerala– Goa

• Both the states lies on the western ghats of the Indian Continent.

Kerala – God’s own country• Kerala, an Indian state is located on the Malabar coast of

south-west India.

• Formed on 1 November 1956 by the States Reorganisation Act by combining various Malayalam-speaking regions.

• Thiruvanathapuram is it’s capital.

• The state has an area of 38,863 km2 with a population of 3.33 Crore and is bordered by Karnataka to the north and north-east, Tamil Nadu to the east and south, and the Arabian Sea to the west.

• Kerala is an important international and domestic tourist destination.

• The backwaters, beaches, Ayurvedic tourism, and tropical greenery are among its major attractions.

• National Geographic's Traveler magazine named Kerala as one of the "ten paradises of the world" and "50 must-see destinations of a lifetime“.

• The state is famous especially for its ecotourism initiatives.

Marketing Strategy of Kerala Tourism• Until the early 1980s, Kerala was a relatively

unknown destination.

• In 1986 tourism gained an industry status in Kerala.

• Aggressive marketing campaigns launched by the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC).

• In 2000, with an objective to promote tourism, The Kerala Travel Mart (KTM) was launched and was registered as a society.

• Kerala was the first state to set up KTM as permanent organization to promote the tourism attractions worldwide.

• Kerala Tourism launched a 360 degree brand-building exercise.

• Along with print and TV advertisements it also used below-the-line promotions to build its brand and promote tourism.

• Kerala Tourism invited celebrities to become brand ambassadors for Kerala. Among them was well-known painter M.F. Husain.

• In 2008, Kerala Tourism started marketing through the mobile media and became the first state in the country to develop tourism-related web content compatible with mobile phones.

• Awards to Kerala Tourism:-– WTTC (World Tourism Travel Council) ‘Tourism for

Tomorrow’ awards in destination category, 2006.– PATA gold award in ecotourism, marketing, heritage etc.– Outlook Traveler-TAAI – Best state that promoted travel

and tourism, 2000-01.

Important Attractions in Kerala

• Varkala Beach– Flanked on the western coast by the Arabian Sea,

Kerala has a long coastline of 580 km all of which is virtually dotted with sandy beaches.

• Kovalam Beach– Kovalam beach near Thiruvananthapuram is

among the first beaches in Kerala to attract tourists worldwide.

• Backwaters– The backwaters in Kerala are a chain of brackish

lagoons and lakes lying parallel to the Arabian Sea coast (known as the Malabar Coast).

– Kettuvallam (Kerala houseboats) in the backwaters are one of the prominent tourist attractions in Kerala.

– Alleppey, known as the "Venice of the East" has a large network of canals that meander through the town.

– The Vallam Kali (the Snake Boat Race) held every year in August is a major sporting attraction.

• Hillstations– Popular hill stations in the region include

Devikulam, Munnar, Nelliyampathi, Peermade, Ponmudi, Vagamon,Wayanad and Kottanchery Hills.

Mode of Transportation

• Kerala is well accessible by air, rail, road and ports.• AIR– Thiruvananthapuram International Airport– Karipur Airport, Kozhikode

– International Airlines like Gulf Air, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Air Lanka, Air Maldives and Air India operate many flights from Thiruvananthapuram.

• Road– An extensive network of metalled roads connects most

of the places in the state. – National highways 47, 17, and 49 connect Kerala with

other parts of India.

• Railways– There are around 200 railway stations in Kerala

connecting most of the places in the state to places in the other parts of India and inside the state.

– Long-distance express trains connect important places in the state to places outside Kerala like Mumbai, New Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata.

• Ports– Among 16 ports, Kochi is the only major port in the

State. – There are three intermediate ports and 12 minor ports.

Inland water transport system is also available. – Boats are used in certain areas for public transport.– An inland waterways project for linking the southern and

Initiatives• A novel initiative by the Kerala tourism

called Saparya (Synergising Actions through Participatory Approach), the programme aims at developing tourism resources of potential destinations.

• As part of international marketing, KTDC is planning to conduct a series of trade workshops along with various International Travel fairs.

• KTDC recently initiated a new tourism-boosting campaign called ‘Keralam Kanaam’ in order to popularize Kerala’s destinations within Kerala.

Goa – A Perfect Holiday Destination• The state of Goa is located on the western coast of

India in the coastal belt known as Konkan.

• Climate is warm and humid tropical with cool and pleasant weather in winter months.

• It is variously known as "Rome of the East", "Tourist Paradise" and "Pearl of the Orient”.

• Earlier Goa was ruled by Portugese for four centuries. Vasco-da-gama founded Goa.

KERALA

• Kerala is an Indian state located in its south-western part. It absorbs about 15,005 sq. miles of total land area.

• Kerala is among the oldest cultural foundation in India.

• Kerala is a wet and naval tropical climate.

GOA

• Goa is the smallest state positioned in the south-western part of India that occupies about 1429 sq. miles of total land area.

• Goa shaped a part of Mauryan territory when it was ruled by the king of Magadha, Ashoka.

• Foreign exchange earnings for the year 2011 is Rs.4221.99 Crores which recorded an increase of 11.18 % over the previous year.

• Total Revenue (including direct & indirect ) from Tourism during 2011 is Rs:19037 Crores, showing an increase of 9.74% over the last year’s figure.

Conclusion

• Goa and Kerala.Both are beautiful with their own charm but quite different.

• Goa has its noticeable Portuguese influence, lovely beaches, the Anjuna flea market, and rave culture (mostly from December through Easter). Kerala is known for its greenery, wildlife, and more traditional Indian culture with a southern twist.

• Both the places have their own importance. They both don't really compete with each other.
