KERALA VETERINARY AND ANIMAL SCIENCES UNIVERSITY

Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (KVASU) came into existence on 14thJune, 2010 as per Ordinance No.44/2010 and later Act 3/2011 of the Government of Kerala. The establishment of the University was the result of the recognition of the need to advance animal production sector activities. KVASU now undertakes academic, research, extension and entrepreneurship activities in animal production and dairy sector FACULTIES

Kerala Veterinary and Animal Science University has three faculties, viz. Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Faculty of Dairy Science and Faculty of Poultry Science.

CONSTITUENT COLLEGES The University has seven constituent colleges:

Each of these colleges undertake academic, research and extension activities in the

areas assigned to them. The University owns about 1000 acres of landed assets and is planning to acquire some more for its developmental needs.

College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Mannuthy, Thrissur

College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Mannuthy came into existence in 1955 as

the Government Veterinary College, to train sufficient veterinary professionals for Kerala

State. Subsequently, the college was renamed as Kerala Veterinary College and Research

Institute in 1961 and as College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences in 1972, when it became

a constituent faculty affiliated to Kerala Agricultural University. Subsequent to the

formation of KVASU, it became a constituent college of the new University. The College is

located about 7 km east of Thrissur town, on the Thrissur-Palakkad stretch of National

Highway-47, in a campus spreading over an area of 400 acres.

College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, was established and formally inaugurated

on 11 December, 2004 at the picturesque and serene village of Pookode in Wayanad

district. The headquarters of the newly formed Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences

University is also being located in this campus. Wayanad hills, contiguous to the Nilgiris in

Tamil Nadu and Bandhipur in Karnataka, are known for its evergreen forests, plantations,

wildlife, mist clad mountains and valleys. During summer the temperature goes up to a

maximum of 35°C and during winter the temperature goes down to a minimum of 15°C.

The college was established in the district of Wayanad with a vision to disseminate

technical knowledge to the rural farmers via technology innovation for the uplift of the

northern backward districts and for working in the area of Conservation and maintenance

of indigenous/exotic breeds of livestock and poultry in the agro-climatic conditions of

Wayanad. The University plans to develop the Pookode campus as a primary research and

development centre in Animal Sciences.

College of Dairy Science and Technology, Mannuthy, Thrissur

College of Dairy Science and Technology, Mannuthy, was established in the year

1993 as a constituent college under Kerala Agricultural University for offering Degree

programme in B. Tech (Dairy Science and Technology). The college is located at Mannuthy,

Thrissur on the side of NH-47. Campus recruitment programmes for B. Tech (Dairy Science

and Technology) graduates are conducted by famous dairy institutions every year. The

graduates are also absorbed as Dairy Extension Officers in the Department of Dairy

Development in the Government of Kerala. Many students are also able to pursue

Management studies and have successfully been placed as senior executives in private and

public sector institutions like AMUL, NDDB, DFRL, SUMUL, Mother Dairy, GSK, SmithKline

Beecham, Cadbury’s, and Banking institutions such as SBI, ICICI, HDFC, IOB, PNB etc.

ELIGIBILITY

Ph.D. Programme – Masters Degree in the respective/related subject recognized by

the University with an OGPA of 7.5/10 or equivalent OGPA/equivalent percentage of

marks at Masters Degree level. For SC/ST candidates the OGPA shall be 7.0/10 or

equivalent. Students awaiting results can also apply. They should produce attested

copy of the final mark list on or before 27-07-2016.

SYSTEM OF TEACHING AND EVALUATION

Semester system of instruction and internal/external evaluation will be

followed.

HOW TO APPLY

All candidates, seeking admission for Ph.D. should submit their applications

on-line. Candidate should fill the online application form available in University

website www.kvasu.ac.in, uploading his/her passport size color photograph

(150WX200H pixels) and signature (250WX90H pixels). The size of photograph and

signature shall not exceed 30 kb. Thereafter the candidate should make the

remittance of the application fee by any of the methods, furnished below.

a. Making payment through Demand Draft

Submit the application filling the details in application form. Before filling the application,

Demand Draft in favour of Finance Officer, Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University,

Pookode, Wayanad payable at State Bank of Travancore, Kalpetta for Rs. 1000/- for those

belonging to General category and Rs. 500 for SC/ST category being the application fees has

to be taken from any nationalized bank. The details of Demand draft should be entered in the

application form.

Through credit card/debit card/Internet banking:-

Remit the fee at the time of submission of the application form through online payment mode

using credit card/debit card/Internet banking. Candidates belonging to General Category

should remit Rs.1020/- as the application fee and bank processing charges those belonging to

SC/ST (Native of Kerala origin) should remit Rs. 520/-

After remitting application fee, candidate should take the print out of the online

application submitted using user ID and password and send the same after affixing

signature of the applicant in the space provided with the following enclosures to the

PROJECT PROPOSAL AND PAPERS PUBLISHED

The candidate should upload a file containing the details of the project proposal

(The file type shall be DOC/DOCX/PDF) while filling the online application. The file

size does not exceed 500 kb. The proforma of the project proposal shall be as shown

below. The project proposal is a mandatory one. The approval of the project submitted

by the student will be determined by the University experts.

Similar to the project proposal, the candidate should upload a file containing the

details of the papers published (The file type shall be DOC/DOCX/PDF), while filling

the online application. The file size does not exceed 100 kb. All papers published shall

be shown in one file. Papers published are not a mandatory one. Papers published shall

be any of the following types.

1. Original research papers

2. Text books authored/edited

3. Chapter in text book

4. Review articles in research in research journals

5. Research note

6. Popular science articles

7. Any other articles

The hardcopy of the details of the papers published signed by the candidates should

be sent with the hard copy of the application.

Incomplete applications and the application not enclosed with requisite documents

will be summarily rejected.

Points to be noted

1. Application will be received only through online. Hardcopy of the application after affixing signature in the space provided should be sent to the University Headquarters.

2. Hardcopy of the application shall be enclosed with the DD (details of candidate on reverse side), if the payment of application fee is made through DD.

3. Hardcopy of the application shall also be enclosed with hard copy of the project proposal, papers published and the attested copies of certificates mentioned above.

PENALTY FOR FALSE INFORMATION

Any candidate who is found to have willfully or otherwise given any particulars

which are false or has suppressed material information or does not satisfy the requisite

qualification for admission shall be disqualified. They shall not be allowed to continue

on the rolls of the University, if it is detected at any stage of his/her studentship in the

University.

SELECTION

As a part of selection procedure there will be separate entrance examination and

Interview. The nature of the entrance examination will be of objective type with

questions on general knowledge and the subject concerned.

Selection shall be done on the basis of the OGPA in the qualifying exam, score in

the entrance exam, experience, published articles, interview and the extracurricular

activities of the candidate.

Candidates will be considered for admission only if they secure a minimum of 40%

marks in the entrance examination. The minimum is 30% for SC/ST candidates.

As ordered in G.O. MS 285/72/HD dated 6.1.1972, 10% of the total intake capacity

will be reserved for SC/ST. Fractions of half or more than half in the actual working out

of the percentage will be rounded off to one. List of communities to be considered

under SC/ST will be as per the list approved by the Government of Kerala.

REJECTION OF APPLICATION AND DISQUALIFICATION OF CANDIDATES

Applications received late or defective or incomplete in any manner or which do

not contain any of the enclosures specified above are liable to be summarily rejected.

Applicants who attempt to canvas or influence the members of the Selection

Committee directly or otherwise will be disqualified.

TEST AND INTERVIEW

The candidate should download the admit card ticket from University website by

01.08.2016 using User ID and password. The University will not send admit card to any

candidates by post.

Entrance examination and Interview will be conducted at College of Veterinary

and Animal Sciences, Mannuthy, Thrissur, Kerala or at any other suitable venue notified

by the University,on days as mentioned in the schedule furnished below.

It may be noted that Admit card shall be issued for the candidates who have

applied for. On detailed scrutiny, the applications with discrepancies or not satisfying

the criterion, if any found, shall be rejected. The issue of hall ticket for appearing in

the examination will not, in any way, entitle any claim for the selection even if the

candidate passes the examination or has been called /appeared for interview. If it is

found that the candidates are not fulfilling any of the essential eligibility, the

candidature will be cancelled at any stage of selection process and no appeal against

such cancellation will be entertained.

Candidates will be required to attend (at their own expense) the test and

interview at the place and time notified. Candidates coming after commencement of

the examination will not be permitted to write the examination. Similarly candidates

will not be allowed to leave the examination hall in the middle of the examination. Use

of mobile phones in the examination Hall is strictly prohibited

The originals of all certificates and documents should be produced at the time of

the interview and at the time of admission. Those who do not produce the original

documents at the time of admission/interview, shall forfeit their seat and the seats

will be filled from the waiting list or in any other manner deemed fit by the University.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF RESULTS

The result of entrance examination and the final rank list will be published in

University website on the dates as scheduled. No separate intimation letter will be sent

to the qualified candidates.

ADMISSION

Candidates selected will be admitted to the course, provided they pay the

prescribed fees in full on the due dates fixed.

In the case of those candidates selected for admission who have not paid the fees in

time and not joined the course on the date fixed, their claims for admission will be

cancelled without notice and the seat thus becoming vacant will be filled up with

eligible candidates, if any, from the rank/ waiting list.

Candidates in Government service/University service are expected to make their

own arrangements to get relieved from their posts in time.

Candidates should produce the original certificates in proof of age, qualifications,

TC, Conduct certificate and Medical fitness certificate obtained from any Medical

Officer not below the rank of Civil Surgeon.

Candidates who secured their degrees from Universities outside Kerala state should

produce Migration Certificate within one month of admission.

Candidate who discontinues the programme permanently has to remit the actual

amount spent by the KVASU, for the student as liquidation damage subject to a

minimum of Rs. One lakh. The chairperson of the advisory committee shall work out

the amount and intimate the same to the Head of the Institution. If the amount so

worked out exceeds Rs. One lakh, the excess amount shall also be remitted. If the

discontinuation is in pursuit of a higher career opportunity and in overall public

interest, the Vice Chancellor of KVASU is competent to waive the damages on the

recommendation of the Head of the Institution.

FEES

A special caution deposit of Rs.2500 is to be paid at the time of admission in the

case of candidates from outside the State. This will be refunded when he/she leaves

the University after completion of the course. All the post graduate students should

also subscribe to Parents Teachers Association.

EXEMPTION FROM PAYMENT OF FEES

Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe candidates of Kerala state will be given

exemption from payment of fees subject to the grant of concession by the Scheduled

Caste Development Department, Government of Kerala. However, they will have to

pay various caution deposits. They should also submit applications for concession in the

prescribed form.

No relaxation with regard to payment of fees will be allowed in the case of

employees on deputation/study leave or those who are holders of I.C.A.R. fellowships.

They shall have to remit fees on the due dates prescribed and make their own

arrangements to get the same reimbursed from the respective authorities.

The Hon’ble High Court of Kerala will be the only judicial body to decide on the

disputes arising if any, in the matter of admission.

Ph.D PROGRAMME IN BIOSCIENCES - 2016

The Regulations for the award of Ph.D. degree in Biosciences are in accordance with the

provisions of the regulations of the University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards

and Procedure for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulation, 2009)

Ph.D. programme in Biosciences is offered at College of Veterinary and Animal

Sciences, Mannuthy and Pookode in various disciplines. The semester system of education

will be followed. Minimum duration for the programme is eight semesters. Each semester

will be of six months duration. Each student enrolled is required to take a specified load of

course work in the chosen subject of specialization and shall complete a research project

and present it in the form of a thesis. Various subjects for which Ph.D programe in

ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION

For admission to the Ph.D. programme in Biosciences in the faculty, applicants

fulfilling the following criteria shall be treated as eligible:

a) Persons having passed Post Graduate Degree (Masters Degree in Science subjects)

wish to apply to this programme should have published a minimum of 2 peer reviewed

research articles.

MODE OF SELECTION

Admission to the Ph.D programmes shall be made on the basis of (a) the qualifying

degree marks; (b) a written entrance test; and (c) an interview. A relative weightage of

2:2:1 will be given for the three components (qualifying marks: entrance test: interview)

of the selection process. All the candidates scoring a minimum of 50% marks and in the

case of SC/ST candidates a minimum of 45% marks, as the case may be, in the entrance

test will be qualified to appear for the interview.

The following categories of applicants are exempted from appearing for the entrance test:

1. Candidates who have qualified U.G.C./C.S.I.R/ICAR test or who possess an M.Phil.

Degree by Research and Thesis

2. College/University Teachers with two years teaching experience

3. Candidates who have qualified the Kerala State Level Eligibility Test

4. Scientists working in approved Research Laboratories either owned or managed by

the Central/State Government or autonomous Research Institution of National

Status, with five years’ experience in the grade of Scientist and having a minimum

of two research papers published in the recognized research journals of the

concerned subject

5. Scientists/Physicians working in Pharmaceuticals/Hospitals/Research Centre’s

owned by the Government with five years’ experience and having a minimum of two

research paper published.

For the above categories of applicants, selection will be done on the basis of the

COURSE WORK

Course work shall be undertaken in the first semester. The candidate shall

undertake an intensive programme for the first eight weeks in the first semester wherein

he/she shall put in 8 hours of classes per day (9 am to 1 pm and 2pm to 6 pm) for six days

a week irrespective of intervening holidays (8hx6dx8w=384h). This will be followed by

regular classes on Saturdays and Sundays (9 am to 1 pm and 2pm to 6 pm) for 16 weeks

(8hx2dx16w=256h). Research programme can be taken up only after successful completion

of the course work.

FEES

Tuition fee: Rs. 49,000/- per semester. Special fees will be similar to that for regular Ph.D.

programme (see page No. 12). Fee exemption to eligible students will be as per Govt.

rules.

Ph.D PROGRAMME IN CLIMATE CHANGE IN ANIMAL AGRICULTURE- 2016

The Regulations for the award of Ph.D. degree in Climate Change in Animal

Agriculture are in accordance with the provisions of the Academic regulations of the

KVASU approved in the 18th Academic Council held on 19-04-2016.

Present and future climate change, and issues related to climate variability are

among the foremost scientific challenges presently being faced by the global community. In

all environment-related aspects of animal agriculture and associated activities, there is a

recognition and demand for climate change-related expertise and services. Therefore, it

is essential to train the manpower as a part of capacity building in climate change

education, research and extension to meet the national and global demand of resource

personnel in this field of specialization of Climate Change and Animal Agriculture for

sustenance of food security. Capacity building in climate change and animal agriculture

provides an integrated approach to the analysis of climate change and processes in the

context of sustenance of animal agriculture and environmental management.

RESIDENTIAL FACILITIES

Limited hostel facilities are available at both campuses. This will be provided to

the students, depending on availability. Those who do not get admission in hostels

shall make their own arrangements for stay. University does not undertake to provide

such facility by way of this prospectus. Students admitted will not have any claim for

hostel facilities in the campus.

The prospectus is subject to further modification/addition as may be

considered necessary by the University and will be issued as executive orders/

notifications and the students are liable to obey the rules and regulations so

amended or modified.
