Acting Keremeos Mayor Charlene Cowling chose Don and Doreen Roper’s 1936 Ford Tudor touring sedan as her Mayor’s Choice at the 13th annual Kars Under the “K” car show, held in Memorial Park on Sunday, August 3.

Members of the Kaleden and Okanagan Falls Volunteer Fire Departments fought a structure � re at 135 Saddlehorn Drive into � ursday morning, July 31.

Kaleden Fire Department responded to the original call which was dispatched around 11:15 Wednesday night. Fire� ghters arrived on scene to � nd a log house fully engulfed, with spot � res spreading to the surrounding wooded area.

Kaleden also called in mutual aid, requesting Okanagan Falls and forestry wild� re � re� ght-ers for assistance. Water tenders from both � re departments were utilized to bring water to the scene from St Andrews, about a kilometre south

of Saddlehorn Drive. A small crew of Okanagan Falls � re� ghters were also stationed at Keremeos � rehall during the � re.

Showers of sparks, shooting 70-80 feet in the air set nearby bush on � re. Fortunately for the � re� ghters, the night was calm.

“We were very lucky,” said Kaleden Fire Chief Darlene Bailey.

“� ere certainly was potential for this to have been a major interface � re, had other weather conditions prevailed.”

� ere were some tense moments early in the � re. With sparks soaring and roughly a half acre of tree covered interface burning, residents of Saddlehorn Drive gathered on the street to watch with concern. A number of nearby residences would have been under immediate threat had the � re spread.

Kaleden and Okanagan Falls � re� ghters battled the structure through the night while forestry � re-� ghters put out hot spots surrounding the build-ing, in addition to constructing a � reguard. Ap-proximately 20 � re� ghters attended the incident.

Kaleden firefighters remained on scene through � ursday a� ernoon, dousing hot spots in the building’s remains and in the surrounding forest. � e scene was also attended by members of the RCMP and BC Ambulance.

� e � re’s origins are as yet undetermined. It is believed two males were renting the building, which is owned by an Abbotsford resident.

Early reports from dispatch indicated the pos-sibility that rounds of ammunition were exploding in the � re. Neighbouring property owners on Saddlehorn Drive also reported two loud explo-sions prior to seeing the building erupt in � ames.

Orofino Winery in Cawston held their annual 1.6 Mile Dinner on Saturday, July 28.

O n e h u n d r e d g u e s t s e n j o y e d an incredible five course meal created

by superstar chefs from Joy Road Ca-tering of Pentic-ton and Waterfront Wines of Kelowna.

Keremeos Legion service recalls centennary of First World WarThe Keremeos

Legion held a World War 1 commemo-rative service in Memorial Park on Monday, August 4.

The service paid tribute to those who served in “The Great War.”

Approximately 40 citizens attended the

service, which took place at 11 a.m., and included a full colour guard and attendance by an RCMP member in

EditorialToo many car shows? There was an interesting and varied mix of

classic and hot rod cars at this year’s 13th ver-sion of Kars Under the “K”.

The car show has been attracting visitors to Keremeos on the B.C.Day long weekend from all over the region , giving local business a boost in the process.

It was disappointing to hear the Junior Cham-ber International of Penticton decided to stage a car show on the same day, (the Jacked and Juiced custom car show) in place of their annual event, which was the Mr. Muscle and bikini contest, which ran for 30 years.

That event seemed to fit in with the profile of other events normally taking place in Pentc-ton on the long weekend, which typically are themed around youth.

The organizers said they were trying to put together a more family friendly event. However, those types of activities abound next week in Penticton, centred around the Peach Festival,

Penticton’s major car show happens in June, which puts some distance on the calendar between it and Kars.That time span between events keeps such shows from becoming over subscribed.

It appeared that attendance at Sunday’s Kars Under the “K” was down a bit from previ-ous years, in spite of the good weather and the highly varied selection of entries.

Obviously, the Penticton market represents a substantial market for Kars organizers. It’s unfortunate JCI made the choice it did this year when they already had a venue that was well established and well positioned for the Penticton B.C. Day tourist market.

Kars Under the “K” is a well established car show in the area, and it’s not clear whether attendance was negatively affected by the Pent-icton show. It would be unfortunate if it was, however, as the future end result of JCI’s deci-sion may ultimately be to the detriment of both organizations.

My daughter and her boyfriend managed to get a mutual weekend off work and came to visit us last weekend.

My wife and I were anxious to see them again. Since they moved to the coast, we’re lucky if we see each other half a dozen times a year.

One of the reasons why we don’t see each other that often is because they don’t have a vehicle yet. I’m actually impressed by their discipline in not over-extending themselves to get a vehicle, relying instead on city transit, and making do with that.

But it does make it dif-ficult to get together.

Last weekend, they hitched a ride with some friends, who were also our guests for the weekend. Two vehicles in total, six guys and two girls I believe was the weekend tally.

Thankfully, we live in the sunny, warm Okana-

gan - Similkameen.They pitched tents in

the backyard and settled easily into their weekend vacation.

In spite of the sudden influx of guests, I enjoy the opportunity to meet my daughter’s and Jeremy’s (her boyfriend) friends.

I find I’m always com-paring their generation to mine at that age. Over the weekend I observed a few things about Generation “Z” that left me feeling pretty good about the lives they’ve made for them-selves, and their future.

The night of their ar-rival, we dusted off the old beer pong table and set it up. It hadn’t been used since their last summer visit two years ago, and they were nice enough to let the old guy join in the fun.

Couldn’t beat ‘em, but at least I got to join ‘em.

My daughter jokingly pointed out to me that out of the seven friends, only one was a “white guy.” The rest were a range of ethnicities, or a mix of ethnicities. What was com-

mon amongst them was good naturedness, friendly disposition, and politeness. They all seemed to en-joy each other’s company without breaking into fac-tions, arguing, or fighting.

The whole weekend appeared to me like that - even when the group let their hair down on Satur-day night and pulled an all nighter in the garage. As evening gave way to the partial light of dawn, I could hear them singing like a bunch of off- key lumberjacks, apparently reminiscing on hits from the ‘90s. (They need to go back at least two more decades to fnd the good music; I’m sure they’ll get there, eventually).

There appeared to be one difference between modern youth and all nighters, and my experi-ences from that era, and that would be the intro-duction of Red Bull into the weekend drinking mix. What it seemed to do was empower the drunken rev-ellery; instead of fading at dawn’s early light, they seemed to be energized.

They didn’t call it a night until mid- morning, pass-ing out on the lawn and in their tents until the Mitch-ell B-25 bomber that was visiting Penticton airport clattered overhead.

My past fears that we were raising a generation of couch potatoes glued to electronic devices were only partly realized on the weekend; this group was very active physically, but distributed throughout the garage were cell phones plugged into rechargers.

Sunday following their all-nighter, they were, in general, a much more humbled, quiet and inac-tive bunch. That lasted until approximately 8 p.m., when a couple of die hards tried to get something go-ing for their last evening in the Okanagan. No one seemed to be too enthu-siastic about a repeat of Saturday evening’s per-formance, however. as the overindulgence of alcohol and lack of sleep the night before took its toll.

I guess some things may change, but other things, not so much.

The dog days of August are upon us. A hot spell lasting almost a month is having its effect

on Keremeos residents as priorities shift and people look for ways to beat the heat.

Last Wednesday, July 30, the usually thriving down-town business core on Seventh Avenue between Sixth and Seventh Streets was nearly deserted following lunch hour, in a pattern that appears to becoming the norm - at least with every sunny day where the tem-perature exceeded 30 degrees Celsius.

Some businesses fare better than others during a heat wave. Restaurants, pubs and bars can be an oasis or a sauna, depending on what position one is em-ployed at, while office work more often than not comes with the comfort of central air. Then there are those whose work is all outdoors...

In Memorial Park, Alex and Richard sat at a picnic table, new arrivals in the village. “It’s uncomfortable, especially with backpacks on,” said Alex. The two were carrying backpacks, a tent as well as cherry picking bins.

“We’re outside all day,” he continued, “you have to escape the sun at some point.” He said they got up early every morning because the sun heated up the tent so quickly.They thought they would head for the old Farmworkers campground area for the night, and move north, noting that cherries had nearly finished here in the Similkameen .

Downtown, a sign on the door of the Wrong Turn Tavern read, “I’m sorry, we will be closed Wednesday, July 30 due to major cleaning.

We are also going to slack off - enjoy tubing the river, celebrate two Wrong Turn Tavern ‘family” birth-day’s and have a much needed relaxing day.”

Across the street at Emmys Bake Shop, the fans work full time and the doors are open, front and back, to create a draft.

“It’s busy in the morning,” Emmy said, “on the hot days, it gets pretty quiet in the afternoon.”

“This morning, we were really busy from 8 until 11 a.m.”

Emmy is hoping to have air conditioning for next summer.

At MJ’s Pizza and Caribbean Foods, Mark and his employees take advantage of a few square feet in the middle of their pizza shop where the roof mounted “swamp cooler” sits.

“This is how everyone here stays cool,” Mark said, demonstrating by staking out his position on the floor underneath the unit.

Keremeos RCMP report a 39 per cent increase in calls for service during the first quarter of 2014, compared to the first quarter of 2013.

Break and enters were up 200 per cent over last year, from six to 18. Cause disturbance cases were also up from three in 2013 to 16 and mischief complaints went from five to 16.

one drug file and issued one driver with a seven day Im-mediate Roadside Prohibition. One driver was charged with impaired driving and related offences.

There are currently no chronic offenders in the RCMP detachment area.

her � gures from. Eighty-six per cent sup-port a dedicated conservation fund, there is public support for a $13 to $25 levy. Who did the asking?

Where/when was the asking done?I for one sent an email to my Area “B”

rep saying we were not in favor of this. There are enough committees at all levels

of government covering this already, we do not need more and de� nitely not to the tune of collecting $500,000 annually.

She says an initial project could study water and water quality, are we not already doing this? Drop this idea now, we do not need money spent on a referendum, better things to spend it on!

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation began calling on the federal government to issue full disclosure of salary and band � nancial statements back in 2009

Their efforts paid off late last month when the the Department of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Cana-da began posting the salaries of aboriginal chiefs and councillors, and annual band � nancial statements on the federal govern-ment’s website.

Information for the Lower Similkameen Indian Band has been posted to the site, but so far no information is available for the Upper Similkameen Indian Band.

Last year, the LSIB chiefs and council were paid the following:Robert Edward - paid $39,607.63 in remu-neration and $12,392.04 in expenses during his seven month term in of� ce in 2013.

Keith Crow - paid $16,632.72 in remu-neration and $5,267.95 in expenses for his

� ve month term in of� ce in 2013.Councillors made the following in remu-

Driver escapes truck rollover with minor injuriesOn Friday, August 1, at approximately 6:30 a.m., Kevin Bertrand of Keremeos was

driving a logging truck on Highway 3 near the Lawrence Ranch when the trailer load shifted, causing the trailer and cab to � ip. Bertrand, who escaped with bruises, was trapped in the vehicle until rescue crews could arrive to extricate him. He expressed his thanks to two passers-by who stopped and stayed with him until further help arrived. The accident closed Highway 3 for two hours while highway crews cleaned up the spilled logs.

MVA results in death of Cawston manOn August 2 at approximately 9:45 a.m., Keremeos Ambulance and Keremeos RCMP

attended a single vehicle rollover on Chopaka Road, south of Cawston. A lone male driver lost control of a pick up truck, which overturned, ejecting him from the vehicle.

The driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene.He has since been identi� ed as Charles Seymour, 47, of Cawston.RCMP continue their investigation into the accident.Rash of theft from vehicles over long weekendPolice report a rash of theft from vehicles over the long weekend in Keremeos. A Keremeos truck driver fortunately escaped with just bruises and sore muscles after his rig rolled on Highway 3 west of Keremeos early Friday morning, August 1. It is believed a tire blew, causing his load to shift. The highway was closed for a couple of hours.

The remains of a residence on Saddlehorn Drive near St. Andrews by the lake, Thursday morning, July 31, following a late night fire that ignited nearby brush. Fortunately for firefighters, winds were calm, enabling them to contain the brush fire to a few hundred metres.

June 2014 has been one of the highest construction activity months in recent history in the Regional District of

Okanagan-Similka-meen. Construc-tion values for June exceeded 6.7 million up from 3.6 million in June 2013.

Over the past seven months, the regional district has issued 199 building permits. Of those 199 permits, 32 per-mits were for single

family dwellings. The majority of the permits issued have been for additions, repairs or plumbing. Ten permits have

been issued for new commercial, indus-trial or institutional development.

Tourism statistics are up at the Keremeos Infocentre for the first half of summer.

Infocentre manager Colleen Christensen said April party visits were 314, for a total of 447 individual visits to the centre. May party visits were 736, for a total of 1,172 individuals, while June saw 855 parties totalling 1,356 individuals.

“We’re exceeding 2013 tourist visits and closing in on the record year, which was 2012,” said Christensen. “July has already exceeded last year’s visits for that month.”

Christensen said tourists were coming from all over Europe, with a surprising anomaly being the number of American visitors, which is significantly higher than past years. In June alone, 82 Washington-based parties stopped at the Infocentre, compared to 86 parties originating in Europe.

“I’m really pleased to see that,” Chris-tensen said.

The August long weekend appeared to be a busy one for Keremeos business, with Kars Under the “K” on August 3 and the annual arrival of the Sober Riders Motor-cyle Club. Sunday’s activity on Seventh Av-enue rivalled that of a weekday, with most downtown businesses open and active.

Kars organizer Marcel Morin reported a good turnout for this year’s car show, not-ing the number of new and unique autos on display this year.

July 24, 2014: Allen L. Gallant died on July 24, 2014 at the age of 52 years. He is survived by his loving mother Patricia Gallant of Nanaimo, his

girlfriend Donalda (Sam) Connelly of Salmon Arm. Children; Krista Higdon of Edinburgh, UK., Clayton Gallant of Vancouver, sister Denise Gallant (Ryan Smyth) of Chemainus, BC, and his many cousins, aunts and uncles. Sadly predeceased by his father Richard Paul Gallant in 2014 and his devoted wife Catherine Ann Higdon in 2007. Allen will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his many family and friends. So, what is a superfood continued...Grapefruit – With only 66 to 84 calories per serving, grapefruits are loaded with Vitamin C, calcium, potassi-um, and magnesium and the membranes are a good source of pectin, a soluble fibre helpful in reducing LDL cholesterol and improving insulin resistance. They are particularly rich in Vitamin A and lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that been extensively studied for its anticancer properties. However, if you are taking any prescribed medications always check with your pharmacist to find out whether grapefruit will interact with the medication before eating them. Grapefruit seed extract is used for its anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. I use a few drops of it in the water when washing fruit and vegetables.

Asparagus – In May 2012 I wrote an article featuring this beautiful super vegetable and I suggested a number of ways to eat it raw. This is an excellent time of year to enjoy this tasty vegetable as you can buy it locally grown. Asparagus is a great source of folic acid, potassium, Vitamin K, C, and A. It is low in calories but high in protein content. It’s also a great promoter of good bacteria in our large intestine (contains inulin) and promotes regu-larity because it is a great source of dietary fiber. You will notice that shortly after eating asparagus your urine will be highly malodorous (polite for “stinky pee”).This is because it quickly stimulates renal activity releasing toxins from the urinary tract. As a result, it is great for treating hypertension (high blood pressure).If you have never tried eating it raw before – begin today by adding slices of it to your green salad.

WARFARIN AND FOOD INTERACTIONSThe anticoagulant, warfarin, (popularly known as a “blood thinner”), has many drug and food interactions. Just be consistent with the amount you consume daily and your warfarin dose will be adjusted accordingly.
