Introduction

Kereru are a type of bird – and they are native to NZ.

Kereru are very special to NZ…. And you’re about to find out WHY……..

Habitat!!!They are usually found in New Zealand forests, which means they are native or endemic. endemic means that it is from that country. Like Sparrow aren’t native and kereru are!

They can also be found in gardens, reserves and parks.

What the Kereru Eats:

• Fruit- Their Favourite

• Buds

• Leaves

• And Flowers!

• ALL from NZ native trees!

Appearance

If you ever try to spot The Kereru it looks like this:

Quite Big (It has the biggest beak after the moa!)

Its back and head feathers are green and bronze but can look purple with the trick of the light.

Predators

The Predators of the Kereru are:PossumsCats- although they’re cute they’re

predators too!RatsAnd Stoats!

Life Span! A Kereru lives up to about

20 years . So when we grow up and become 20, a kereru might too!

A Kereru usually has one chick per year, so the life cycle keeps on going and going!

Survival!Kereru survive like we do. Eat, Drink , Sleep and protect each other.. Its hard for Kereru to survive because predators eat their chicks, and their food. Kereru are also low in numbers because of us . We chop down trees that is the Kererus habitat., Also when kererus swoop over low roads they sometimes get injured.
